THE GOOD NEWS: Ricky Pearsall and "Their entire rookie class is now under contract."
ReplyDeleteTHE NOT SO GOOD NEWS: "They don't want me back." The bloom is off the rose?
I've got a really good feeling Pearsall will be a very good WR for the 49ers.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think he'll be involved in the passing game from week 1 this year.
Assuming Aiyuk is back, I doubt he has the same sort of rookie stats as say Deebo or Aiyuk had, but I could definitely seem him having a Pettis-like rookie year where he has a few games here and there where he puts up some good numbers, likely filling in when guys miss time.
Would you mind comparing OBJr's skill set coming out to Pearsall's?
DeleteVery different imo. OBJ was more of a vertical threat - really good in his stems to create separation on deep routes. His ability to eat up cushion and attack the DBs leverage to get them turned around was awesome.
DeletePearsall is also really good with his routes, but it is more geared towards winning in the short and intermediate routes. Quick wins to create early separation. He's not quite as good setting up deeper routes.
OBJ was also more dynamic with the ball in his hands than Pearsall.
DeleteYou think he can get better setting up deeper routes?
DeleteHe certainly has room for improvement on deep routes, imo. He relies a lot on suddenness, but getting open on deeper routes isn't so much about being sudden but more about manipulation of the DBs.
DeleteIt's going to be nice watching RP for the next number of years. I remember watching Jerry Rice, TO, Kittle, Deebo, and Aiyuk have their "breakout" seasons. Looking forward to seeing Pearsall have his as well.
ReplyDeleteAs far as great 9ers WRs go lets not forget the great Gene Washington. If The 49ers had a half way decent QB after 1972 he would be in the HOF by now.
DeleteYes, you're right Coach. Gene Washington was great. I also forgot Dwight Clark who had a breakout game in a comeback win against the Saints. All the players mentioned were drafted by the 49ers which also meets my personal criteria for breakout players.
DeleteBroken-tackle rate amongst WR's, since 2019:
ReplyDeleteDeebo Samuel -- 18.2%
A.J. Brown -- 11.1%
CeeDee Lamb -- 9.0%
Ja'Marr Chase -- 8.9%
Diontae Johnson -- 8.7%
I see how some are talking about how BA is much more explosive than Pearsall but I really dont see it. I think he has better long speed and is a technition as a route runner but you really dont see him run away from guys down the field.
ReplyDeleteHe normally catches the ball deep gets a few yards and gets tackled. I expect if Pearsall ever reaches his potential it be fairly similar to Aiyuk in terms of numbers with more catches for similar yardage.
Sounds to me like Pearsall needs to improve his technique to reach his potential on deep routes.
DeleteOne thing I have seen from Pearsall's college tape (broken down by content creators), is that he seems to lose when DBs put their hands on him, while breaking.
DeleteCould be a strength issue. Needs improvement here, especially if he is going to be the Slot WR.
It likely is a strength issue...though I think its something that is correctable. With Reps... his quickness will make this something he must overcome because I think most DBs will want to put their hands on him or risk getting cooked.
DeleteYeah he has gotta correct it Shoup. He has a very high ceiling as a WR though.
DeleteNiners signed Jacob Copeland to a one year deal.
ReplyDeleteSteelers?
DeleteYes, Steelers I read the damn thing wrong.
DeleteI guess that's why I couldn't find anything on the internet about the 9ers signing Copeland? LOL
DeleteCame to the realization they ain't gettin' Aiyuk.

ReplyDeleteLooks like Aiyuk is trying to push negotiations along.
ReplyDeleteWith Aiyuk still under contract. So, if he decides play hardball and sits out this year could it backfire since his actions may scare teams away? I just don't see how BA benefits if he and his agent take this route.
ReplyDeleteSo long as he reports to the team for the mandatory minimum number of games to accrue a season, he would become a FA next year, and on the open market he'd have plenty of willing suitors.
DeleteUnless he gets injured. Thats the danger of playing not under a long term contract.
DeleteI really doubt Aiyuk will want to miss out on his paychecks by holding out, not to mention the 49ers can tag him next year if they choose to.
DeleteRazor,
ReplyDeleteWhat's your take on where both party's stand right now? My sense, (personal opinion) is that Aiyuk and 49ers come to an agreement soon.
I think Aiyuk's agent put into his head he can get a deal like Jefferson and the 49ers scoffed. Now it's all about arriving at a deal that doesn't handcuff the 49ers and doesn't disrepect Aiyuk.
