DL Coach Kris Kocurek has refurbished his DL room by removing Chase Young, Randy Gregory, Clelin Ferrell, Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw, and installing Leonard Floyd, Yetur Gross-Matos, Maliek Collins and Jordan Elliott. Bosa and Hargrave make 6. I think they kept 9 last year but I think they'll want to go back to 10. Robert Beal Jr., Drake Jackson and Kevin Givens makes 9. That leaves one spot open for perhaps that 1t double teaming run stuffer. Anderson vs. Brown vs. McGill vs. Davis. I'll go with Anderson as I suspect he has the best opportunity to make the team out of all the UDFA's. How do you guys see it?
I agree with you Anderson should be #10. McGill will end up on the PS and the same for Brown. Two players who may get cut, Jackson and Davis. I think they both need to have very good camps and preseason games
ReplyDeleteDT looks deep and will be a heck of a battle at the back end of the roster.
ReplyDeleteEdge depth is lacking a bit, unless Jackson and Beal take it up a few notches.
MONEY TALKS and we all know what walks!
ReplyDelete* The 9ers signed Evan Anderson with $280,000 total guaranteed money, $30,000 to sign and $250,000 base salary guaranteed.
* Anderson is capable of taking on double teams and has shown flashes in which he wreaks havoc in the middle of the line.
* The money the 9ers paid Anderson to sign, shows that the 9ers, who didn't draft a DT, are high on Anderson and an indication that GM JL and company believe Anderson is good enough to make the PS and has a chance to eventually make the active roster. Anderson (6'3, 326 lbs.) would be a welcomed addition to the 49ers defensive front. Last season, teams ran the ball on the 9ers more than they have in the past, especially in the postseason.
* I would add, that I wouldn't be surprised if DE Drake Jackson is assigned to the PS, or even let go.
Scooter / Razor / Anyone
ReplyDelete* The 9ers signing FA Leonard Floyd to a 2-year, $20 million contract gives the 9ers best DE opposite Bosa since Dee Ford, who helped the 9ers reach Super Bowl LIV in the 2019 season.
Floyd, IMO, is an explosive edge rusher who possesses the ability to bend and has shown he can succeed from 2 and 3-point stances. Floyd's skill set is similar to Ford and D-line coach Kocurek confirmed he will be used in much the same way.
* Because of Ford's injuries, the 9ers never got the chance to see the damage their defensive front could do with a player with his skill set healthy for the entire season and playing across from Bosa. Floyd gives them the chance to find out, and his history (39.5 sacks the last 4 seasons), indicates we will like the results.
* I'M CURIOUS WHAT YOU THINK?
Floyd and Ford are different types of rushers - Ford had exceptional burst and hand usage, while Floyd is more rangy with exceptional effort.
DeleteI think Floyd will do well for the 49ers, but will be a case of taking advantage of guys like Bosa, Hargrave and Collins forcing QBs off their spot for Floyd to clean up.
I am also very keen to see how Gross-Matos goes.
Anyone know how Floyd has graded out against the run the last 3 seasons?
ReplyDeleteI'll see if I can find out for you. They paid him like he's a 3 down starter but I don't know if he can hold up in that role.
DeleteOld Coach
ReplyDeleteLeonard Floyd's strength is sacking the QB! 10.5 sacks in 2023 and 39.5 in the last 4 years. The knock on Floyd has been his tackling.
* In 2021, Floyds tackling grade was 34.5, thanks to a 22.2% missed tackle rate.
* In 2022 Floyd's missed tackle rate was 10%, resulting in a career-high tackling grade of 66.5.
* In 2023 Floyd recorded a missed tackle rate of 36.7 percent, a PFF tackling grade of 29.2.
NOTE:
* Bears 1st Rd draft pick in 2016, played ROLB in a 3-4 D until 2019.
* 2020 to 2022: Played OLB and EDGE in both 3-4 and 4-3 for Rams.
* 2023 played DE for Buffalo. In 2023, Floyd started 16 of 17 games and racked up 10.5 sacks, 45 total pressures, 32 total tackles, a pass defended and a forced fumble.
Floyd hasn't missed a regular season game over the last 6 seasons (99 games) and has registered at least 9.0 sacks a season since 2020.
Geep,
DeleteDo you think they will use Gross-Matos on run downs? Kind of like they used Ferrell last year.
OldCoach
ReplyDeleteYes! Yetur Gross-Matos is listed at 6'5" X 266 and is 26 Y/O while Leonard Floyd is listed at 240. Yetur may be starting to realize his potential after some ups and downs over his first 3 seasons with the Panthers. His 2022 tackling grade was 51.2, his 2023 grade 65.4.
* I'll be watching in pre season, to see if we get the 2022 Floyd with a tackling grade of 66.5.....Or the 2023 Floyd with the tackling grade of 29.2? Either way, Floyd's job will be to pressure and sack the QB.

DeleteGreat stat. But there's only one number that I'm interested in - 6. Hopefully it happens this coming season. Three heartbreaks over the last 3 SBs is getting old!
DeleteBrandon Aiyuk on stalled negotiations with 49ers:
ReplyDelete"They don't want me back."
* Aiyuk posted a TikTok video on Monday of a video call he had with Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Aiyuk and Daniels were college teammates during Aiyuk's final season at Arizona State in 2019. During the call, Aiyuk made a bold claim presumably regarding his negotiations with the 49ers.
"They said they don't want me back," Aiyuk said.
Geep,
DeleteBoy would I love Washington's 25 1st round pick. They will not win in 24 and that pick could end up being top 5. We could draft our LT for the next 15 years.
Sounds good to me OC.
DeleteI wonder if 49ers would need to sweeten that deal by maybe adding a 2nd or a 3rd to get their 1st?
Scooter,
DeleteOr a second player. Maybe a RB Mitchell or Mason.
I wonder how many Adam Peters guys there are on the roster that could be floated?

DeleteImo Mahomes is very good but overhyped, and once they get to the playoffs they have the best defensive coordinator.

And Brock achieves this behind our oline. Amazing production.
Geo,
DeleteWhich QB would you like on your team when you are trailing by 14 in the 4th quarter. I'll take Mahomes especially in the playoffs.
Coach, seriously I’d take Brock.
DeleteAlso, depends on when the turnover takes place. Does it happen in garbage time with a huge lead or at crucial moment in a close game? Turnovers have personalities, imho.

ReplyDeleteR.I.P. Willie Mays. There are a lot of tears being shed in the Bay Area tonight
ReplyDeleteHe and Willie McCovey were my childhood sports heroes. Mays was the best pound for pound player in Baseball. Run, catch, hit and exciting base runner. I can only imagine how much money Willie would be making today if he was in his prime.

Hey, Hey Kid
Willie Mays you brought so much joy to my youth.
