Another done deal in Detroit: Lions are signing QB Jared Goff to a four-year, $212 million contract extension that includes $170 million guaranteed, sources tell ESPN.
What can we expect Brock Purdy's new contract to look like next year if he has another MVP like season? I expect he'll be the highest paid quarterback in the league just as Jimmy G was when they gave him his new contract.
Under the last post I asked who the first team to use a Ohtani style contract will be? Would the NFL allow it? Could the 9ers and BP make history?
ReplyDeleteHadn't seen this new thread before I responded on the other one. I don't believe the current NFL contract rules would allow a deal such as the Ohtani one. I don't believe they allow deferment of payment.
DeleteScooter,
DeleteI found an answer a player can defer as much of their salary as they want. The caveat is that once a player retires all of the deferred money comes forward to the current year. I wonder if a team could keep a player on the 53 even if he was no longer playing to keep the money deferred?
If they ever expand rosters I could see that happening. But most teams already struggle with numbers during the season.
DeleteI also wonder how that impacts salary cap hit - just because a player defers when they get paid, would it mean the cap hit for that deferred payment also gets shifted back? I guess it would if it is agreed in the contract.
Once a player retires all of his deferred money goes on the next seasons cap.
DeleteSorry OC, I wasn't clear what I meant.
DeleteWas wondering whether salary that is earned in a year but the player chooses to defer payment of would count against the salary cap in the year earned or year paid.
I looked it up, and it is based on year earned. So wouldn't be something that teams can use to cheat the cap/ push cap hits back, just changes the year in which the player receives the money.
Re the info that payment gets brought forward on retirement, this is just saying that any money that was deferred and has not yet been paid has to be paid that year. No implications on salary cap.

Shakel was invited to rookie minicamp last weekend, and impressed the coaching staff enough that they wanted to see more of what he could do. 🔥
