Did anyone catch the interview with Brock Purdy by Cam Inman? He asked Brock about Aiyuk and I found his answer ominous: "He and I talk through things and I hear him out," Purdy added about Aiyuk. "At the end of the day, what he’s done for me, giving me an opportunity to come in and throw him the ball, I’ll always be thankful for that." That just doesn't sound like a quarterback that believes his WR will be back this year to me. I'm interested to hear your takes.
On a different note, Purdy warns news anchor lady walking her dog of a huge coyote stalking them off the hill just outside the city where he was in the middle of filming his John Deere commercial!
Hopefully Purdy was thanking him just in case he doesn't return. I wonder how much any player knows about what the FO is thinking? He may have communicated with Aiyuk about his intentions.
ReplyDeletePurdy's comment could mean something. Or, they could mean nothing. TBD
DeleteThe Niners are bringing back Trent Taylor? Yikes! Tiny and old. Never was a fan when they drafted him.
ReplyDeleteI bet they signed him to compete for a special teams spot. Possibly as a camp punt returner and maybe as future PS insurance.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Vaki could be their punt returner?
DeleteI expect that is right OC. The return specialist options were pretty light.
DeleteI wouldn't mind him on the PS, but if he's the starting PR we got problems as far as I'm concerned. That means between Bell, Gray and the draft they couldn't find someone with more upside.
DeleteThere surprisingly isn't a big drop off in average yards per return from McCloud to Taylor.
DeleteI'd love to get someone better, but having him as a fallback option isn't a bad thing.
I just talked with Benjamin Albright and he's in agreement with me that the Seahawks will draft Fautanu at 16
ReplyDeleteThings move fast in the NFL. This time last year the talk was the Seahawks had solved their OT positions for the foreseeable future, following their picks of Cross and Lucas in 2022.
DeleteIf the 49ers are after a day 3 option at WR, they could do worse than Jalen Coker.

Analytics can be useful to check that what you think you see also stacks up with what the metrics say... and if it doesn't, have you going back to see what you may have missed. But it also, imo, shouldn't be used to scout players, per se.
DeleteIn this instance, there are a few guys like Franklin, Odunze, Polk, that will look amazing based on the analytics. But you also need to factor in the offense they played in, and how that helped realise those analytics.
I don't think Odunze or especially Polk will continue to display that same level of explosive play potential in the pros - playing in that Washington offense with Penix at QB was a big factor in their explosive production. Not to say I don't think they are good prospects - I do - but the explosive play metric displayed here is misleading regarding the types of players those guys are.
Franklin on the other hand was used much like he will probably get used in the pros. However, the offense he played in helped create a lot of those opportunities he had in college (and again, having a QB like Bo Nix helped) and I'm not so sure he will be able to continue to bring that level of big play potential to the pros.
I just like their work and wondered if you'd seen their stuff before. I agree its a tool.
DeleteI find a lot of those metrics-based assessments interesting. Dominator score is also an interesting one for WRs. I definitely like to keep my eye out for stuff like that as I think it helps understand how "risky" a prospect may be.
DeleteDane Brugler's mock for the Niners:
ReplyDeleteRound 1, Pick 31: Jer'Zhan Newton, DT, Illinois
Round 2, Pick 63: Andru Phillips, CB, Kentucky
Round 3, Pick 94: Jared Wiley, TE, TCU
Round 4, Pick 124: Christian Jones, OT, Texas
Round 4, Pick 132: Zak Zinter, G, Michigan
Round 4, Pick 135: Luke McCaffery, WR, Rice
Round 5, Pick 176: Jordan Magee, LB, Temple
Round 6, Pick 211: Blake Watson, RB, Memphis
Round 6, Pick 215: Khalid Duke, Edge, Kansas State
Round 7, Pick 251: Kamal Hadden, CB, Tennessee
Newton is the most likely to be there at 31. Phillips would be the highest CB they've ever drafted.
DeleteOff-topic: Any ideas about what their plans/projections are for Brayden Willis?
DeleteHow high they address TE and LB should tell us what their plans and projections are for Willis, Latu, Ford and Graham.
DeleteHere's the Edge rushers from Gridiron Grading:

I see they list Drake Jackson in the upper right quadrant.
DeleteYep. Gonna see what he's made of this year in camp.
DeleteRazor,
ReplyDeleteWhen you say the highest CB they have ever drafted are you refering to JL/KS ?
Yes sir, they're the ones running their drafts.
DeleteReportedly Pittsburgh is offering the 49ers a 2nd round pick along with a late round pick for B. Aiyuk. Is that enough?
ReplyDeleteCoach,
ReplyDeleteSteelers 2nd rd pick is 51, and the 4th is 119. This would be a huge win of a deal for Pittsburgh, imo. I don't see Lynch making a trade unless there is a 1st rd pick involved.
