Players Of Interest #31

We're one week away from the 49ers making their first 1st round selection since 2021. Who are the three most likely suspects which have a realistic chance of still being on the board at 31 that Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch would gravitate towards? Let's take a look:

Most Likely-Darius Robinson, DE, Missouri

Next Likely-Roger Rosengarten, OT, Washington

Least Likely-A. D. Mitchell, WR, Texas

  1. I would trade out of 31 for an early to mid 2nd and mid 3rd. Or, trade up for a late teen to 22 1st rd pick. Tyler Guyton and Graham Barton should be available in that range. Also, JP Johnson might be available as the top Center coming out as well.

    1. Smartest thing you can do in the draft is trade down, while trading up usually results in looking foolish. Not always, but most of the time.

      RE: Draft prospect Graham Barton
      * Most NFL analysts project his best fit is on the interior at center or guard, even tough he plays OT with great technique . * Video break down shows several EDGE rushers with speed and power giving him some problems!
He can play OT in the NFL, but would be an all pro playing on the interior. IMO. a team may draft him and give him a shot at
OT, but ultimately move him to Center, his best fit.

    3. GEEP, I like Barton but am not really across OL enough to comment re: his talent and technique, but what I love about him is his mentality. Give me 5 guys with that mentality up front.

Barton is the most technically sound O-Lineman the 9ers have a realistic chance of drafting. But if you believe all the "experts" his best fit is IOL at Center.
I can see the 9ers drafting him at #31 and then letting his play
determine if his best fit is OT, or IOL. But IMO, if the 9ers draft an OT at #31, it'll be OT Rosengarten from UW. I also belive the 9ers could draft a CB or DT at #31, then draft OT Morgan, Arizona, or Suamataia, BYU with 2nd Rd #63?
Morgan is best fit for KS' ZBS. Suamataia has the least experience and will need a year of NFL coaching, but has the
      highest ceiling of the four.
QUESTION: If the 9ers draft a CB with draft pick #31, who do
      you see the 9ers drafting?

    6. I think if they target a CB it will be to play slot. And maybe STAR.

  2. You are right, especially given the fiasco that brought in Lance. But, there have also been moves to trade up with great success. The Chiefs moved up from 27 in the 1st rd to 10 to draft Mahomes. So, trading up depends on who you ask.

Do not forget the greatest trade up in 9ers history.....Jerry Rice

  3. The latest rumors I have been hearing/reading. The 9ers will hold on to #31 if a WR they covet is there they will draft him and then trade Aiyuk.

  4. AD Mitchell would be a nice choice at 31. I still believe that Trader John has something up his sleeve come next week.

I've heard the same rumors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zed1BKRwH7U
I'm also hearing that the 9ers will draft Missouri CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and yet another rumor (Sam Monson), has the 9ers drafting CB T.J. Tampa , Iowa St with draft pick #31....But then I remember it 'LYING SEASON' and it's possible JL is starting these rumors to confuse the
    other NFL front offices?

  6. Across all rounds, the probability that a player starts more games than the next player chosen at his position is just 53%, and there's a 174% return on trades by forgoing a pick this year for picks next year. The draft is a crap shoot. A little luck is involved and the more rolls of the dice the luckier you'll be.

  7. If James Williams (S) is available in the 4th rd, I hope the 49ers come calling. JW is a Kam Chancellor clone who also has the size to be a hybrid Safety/LB player.

    1. Does that type of player fit in the 49ers defense though? It's a pretty specific skill set that won't match all defensive systems.

      Delete
  8. You are correct. But JW could possibly play in a Budda Baker type role if the 49ers can utilize his size. I believe that he could be a fumble causing machine over the middle of the field. A 4th rd pick might make him more attractive.

    1. I'm hearing Lenoir could be that "STAR" position player Staley likes.

    2. From the way David Lombardi explains the position (below), it certainly looks like Lenoir could fill that role. Quite a 5th round pick.

  9. I'm hearing A D Mitchell doesn't take his diabetic medicine like he should and isn't coachable. Shanahan's relationship with Steve Sarkisian could prove valuable with so many good Texas players available.

  10. Not sure who the 49ers will take round 1, but I am starting to feel reasonably confident they will target Javon Bullard round 2, and will try and move up to get him if they can.

Only problem I see is that he might not last long enough.

    1. I really like both Bullard and Smith-Wade. Would be great additions.

Bullard looks like a day 1 big time playmaker.

    2. Bullard played the "STAR" position, same as Derwin James did under Staley. I just found out that Jalen Graham played that position as well in college.

  11. Latest rumor out of Pittsburgh. The Steelers are willing to give the 49ers their 1st round pick at #20 for B. Aiyuk, if the 49ers are willing to pick up about 66% of his 2024 contract. I guess that would count against the 9ers cap. Sounds good to me. Pick an O lineman with 20 and either pick a WR or trade back with 31.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. How could that even work? Wouldn't the trade only happen if he then signs a new contract extension with the Steelers, which would only go through after the trade? 49ers can't be liable to pay any part of an extension he signs with the Steelers.

Sounds phony/ made up to me.

      Delete
    2. Scooter,
From what I understand the 9ers would be responsible for a percentage of Aiyuk's 5th year rookie contract around 14.5 mill. It would then be Pittsburgh's responsibility to sign him to an extension or not. Either way if the deal called for the 9ers to pick up 66% of Aiyuks 5th year contract they would owe about 9.5 mill.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, OC, what I don't understand about that proposal is that you only do that if the trading team plans on forcing the player to play on the existing deal. And you don't give up a 1st rounder for a potential 1 year rental.

If the reason Aiyuk wants to go is because he wants a long term deal, then he'd be no better off. Worse off, actually, as the 49ers give a better chance of winning.

The only thing I can think of is there might be some issue about having to carry Aiyuk's current salary under the cap until a new deal can be agreed. Maybe the Steelers can't currently fit it. But honestly, that's a them problem.

I have never seen such a deal take place for a guy that is then extended right away. The deal just doesn't make sense on a few levels, so I am calling BS on this rumour (the eating cap hit part, anyway).

      1) Do you believe Aiyuk's trade value is worth at least draft
      pick #15, or 1050 points?
      2) Draft pick #20 = 850 points, or 200 points less than #15,
then ask the 9ers to pick up 66% of his 2024 contract?

  12. If there is an OT or DL that 'fits' the Niner way of doing things and will be taken before the Niners pick I certainly would entertain the thought of moving up to get him. My thinking is there is not much room on this roster for draftee's, might make more sense to spend those draft picks on some 'potential' gifted player. If their pick falls to them at 31 I would try to trade some remaining picks for next year draft.

  14. Just put my trader Dan hat on, and ran a mock draft sim. How would people feel about this draft?

    40. Tyler Guyton, OT, Oklahoma
    58. Javon Bullard, S, Georgia
    74. Christian Haynes, IOL, UConn
    89. Brandon Dorlus, DE/DT, Oregon
    98. Javon Baker, WR, UCF
    109. Theo Johnson, TE, Penn St
    119. Mekhi Wingo, DT, LSU
    132. Isaac Guerendo, RB/KR, Louisville
    152. Chau Smith-Wade, CB, Wash St
    215. Sione Vaki, S, Utah
    220. Caedan Wallace, OT, Penn St
    251. Jalen Coker, WR, Holy Cross

    1. Scooter,
I have been pushing the trade back scenario for a while now but I can't see any way the 9ers could end up with this haul. This draft could be as good as 1986. I love Guyton but don't see him slipping to 41. I love Bullard. I love Johnson. I love Wingo. I love Guerendo. I love Vaki.I love Wallace. I love Coker. If they could get this draft JL would win the exec of the year in a landslide.

    2. Yeah, I was just taking the players available in that mock draft simulation, with a mix of moving back if there were heaps of guys I liked available at a pick, and moving up when the list dwindled.

What this did more than anything for me was highlight how moving back from 31 can actually set up day 2 to be a really strong day, if they then use some of the their day 3 picks to move around the board.

Obviously Guyton being available at 40 was lucky in this sim.

The other thing I have come to realise is that I really don't love this WR class after the top few guys. Even Baker in the 3rd like I took him... tbh I was hoping to take Johnny Wilson to be the big slot but he was taken earlier in round 3. I think in hindsight I'd prefer Luke McCaffrey over Baker.

      Delete
    3. Looks great Scooter. But, Guyton dropping to 40 might be a reach. If he's still on the board at 40 drafting him is a no-brainer. Strong mock.

      Delete
    4. I was actually planning on taking a DL at 40, but with Guyton there I had to take him.

I'm really starting to lean towards taking DL at 31 or after a trade back.

  15. Sounds good. The 49ers current roster made it to the Superbowl. So, imho, there a no major gaps that need immediate attention. But after this season big decisions will be made. This draft is insurance for the 2025 season. So, to that end, I believe OL, CB abd WR are critical to groom for next year. Your mock addresses those needs.
