Here is the list of players we know will not be playing in this game:
QB Brock Purdy (3rd QB) DT Arik Armstead (foot) RB Christian McCaffrey (calf) S Tashaun Gipson (quad) S Ji’Ayir Brown (knee) CB Ambry Thomas (hand) WR Jauan Jennings (concussion)
Saturdays business:
* Activated WR Ray-Ray McCloud from IR * Placed TE Ross Dwelley on IR * Elevated S Tayler Hawkins and RB Jeremy McNichols from practice squad
Meaningless game for both teams who just want to come out healthy and ready for the playoffs. Maybe McVay prefers the Cowboys over the Lions but who knows? Go Niners!
If I'm not mistaken I believe the #6 seed has a 3% chance of making it to the Super Bowl, whereas the #7 seed has less than a 1% chance.
ReplyDeleteWith Super Bowl odds of +220, the 9ers have a 31.2% chance of winning the Super Bowl.
ReplyDeleteBefore the 2023 season started, I predicted the 9ers would end the
season 12W - 5L! So if they end up 12W - 5L or 13W - 4L it's been
a successful year and I hope everyone has enjoyed it as much as
I have. But to make it special, the 9ers need to bring home their 6th Lombardi trophy......
I didn't see this one coming, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised?
ReplyDeleteSteve Wilks voted the second-best defensive coordinator according to NFLPA survey
https://www.ninersnation.com/2024/1/4/24025369/steve-wilks-nflpa-survey-top-coordinators-49ers-head-coach-interview
Wilks is an upgrade over both Saleh and Ryans
DeleteOh boy, Eagles are on tilt. Love to see it.
ReplyDeleteGood to see Darnold looking good today. Moody on the other hand... this is the second time he's missed multiple kicks in one game. Feels like when he misses one it gets in his head.
So much for the "Money" nickname
DeleteAs long as he doesn't miss in the playoffs. Had Purdy played today and thrown a couple of INTs it wouldn't have been a big deal either. Now, if Moody misses in the playoffs and Purdy throws Ints, I would have good reason to be pissed! Unlike today, the playoffs matter.
ReplyDeleteI was really hoping the 9ers would get into FG range at the end of the game. I wanted to see Moody kick a FG with the game on the line. He has had only 1 game winning opportunity and he blew that one. In a season with only 5 losses 2 of them were directly responsible to Moody. He scares the hell out of me going into the playoffs.
DeleteThis game played out in the worst way.
ReplyDeleteSignificant Injuries to Ray-Ray, Ferrell.
We lose the Psychological Advantage over the Rams
Darnold played like Darnold. So Purdy has to stay upright in the playoffs for us to go far.
Backup depth not very good right now.
Much needed bye coming up.
Mug,
DeleteI thought SD was pretty good today. If not for Moody's 2 big misses and 2 terrible drops by the 9ers WRs I believe we would be talking about how good SD played. imho
OC- can you just STOP signing off with your trademark IMHO? Please-
DeleteOld Coach - I disagree.
DeleteThe last fumble from Sam Darnold did it for me. If Darnold is serious about being a Starting QB, he just cannot hold the ball like that and run. Ball security is paramount especially in the final drive.
What I saw with Darnold was that you take away his 1st read, he becomes twitchy and nervous.
Awful play calling by Shanahan (no runs again for JP Mason) and the WRs didn't do any favors for SD. But he just cannot fumble like that.
Ferrel's fine. Ray Ray should be good to go. I'm not worried about facing any team. We have everything we need to win a Super Bowl.
ReplyDeleteRazor,
DeleteIn KS's post game presser he said that Ferrel may not play in the 9ers first playoff game.
I don't know Razor.
DeleteDo you really think we have a Kicker to win the SB? Moody doesn't inspire any confidence in me. Bad time to get the Yips again.
My worry is that because we have a bad Kicker, Shanahan will overcompensate with his play calls and this adds unnecessary pressure to the team.
You will agree, starting with our HC, historically we don't do well with pressure.
OldCoach, Shanny also said he doesn't know if any of us will be alive come Sunday. According to Barrows, Ferrell looked fine in the locker room and it was more precautionary than anything serious.
DeleteMugeek9er, not worried about Moody if Shanny isn't. Not sure what you're getting at. Shanny has been very good in the playoffs.
Also, Shanahan was one overthrown pass in the endzone from winning a SB against the Chiefs. The recent Ravens loss was not indicative of who the 49ers really are. And Cleveland beat a 49ers team that had major stars out, and we still could have beat them if Moody doesn't miss. I firmly believe that the 49ers have the best chance at bringing home the Lombardi next month.
DeleteThis one will be for the great Trent Williams and all 49ers fans who have waited 30 years!
All I have to say about next weeks games is Please, please, please Detroit beat the Rams.
ReplyDeleteThe Rams will lose to the Lions. I predict Tampa Bay will make a trip to Levis in 2 weeks.
DeleteI think LaPorta will be a big blow to Detroit......... I anticipate a close game...... and if pressed, would take the Rams. I agree that TB will give Philly a challenge as well.
DeleteKickers who missed 5 regular season field goals:
ReplyDelete2022 Robbie Gould
2023 Jake Moody
2023 Justin Tucker
81.3% of Brandon Aiyuk's receptions resulted in either a first down or touchdown this season, best in the league among wide receivers.
ReplyDeleteAiyuk was snubbed for the pro-bowl appearance. But, we know his importance in the 49ers offense. The team will have their top 3 WRs back in post season with J. Jennings back in the lineup after his concussion a couple of weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteAre the 9ers going to lose Wilks to another NFL teams as their HC?
ReplyDelete* Report: Chargers request to interview Wilks for head-coaching vacancy
* After Steve Wilks' successful first regular season as 49ers defensive coordinator, the 54-year-old reportedly has drawn interest from one AFC team in need of a head coach.
*The Los Angeles Chargers are requesting to interview Wilks for their coaching role, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Monday, citing sources, left vacant after the team fired Brandon Staley shortly before Christmas.
https://sports.yahoo.com/report-chargers-request-interview-wilks-000254086.html
Will the 9ers lose another one?
ReplyDeleteReport: Commanders, Raiders ask 49ers to interview Peters for GM job
https://sports.yahoo.com/report-commanders-raiders-ask-49ers-211530547.html
I think Peters goes to Washington... I don't think Wilks will get an offer, which will hopefully come next year so they could get the comp pick.... Saleh will be available then as well to return, probably.
DeleteI don't think Peters is going anywhere.
DeleteRazor
DeleteAdam Peters will be the next general manager of the Washington Commanders, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
https://sports.yahoo.com/adam-peters-will-reportedly-be-hired-as-next-washington-commanders-gm-163849184.html
Don't like the idea of losing 49ers coaches or f/o personnel, but on the other hand it's quite the compliment that other organizations look to the 49ers for help.
ReplyDeleteHarbaugh is being stubborn by sticking with the run. Change it up by throwing a pass.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteI prefer seeing a SB ring on Shanahan's hand like his dad.
ReplyDeleteArmstead back to practice. Jennings back to practice. Thomas is on the way too. Ferrell out for one playoff game per Shanny.
ReplyDeleteSafeties Ji'Ayir Brown and Tashaun Gipson are also expected to return to practice. Sounds like one padded practice, one without, early bye rest and then return to practice next week.
ReplyDeleteNames of all NFL HCs fired and names of teams that fired them.
ReplyDelete1 Josh McDaniels - Raiders
2 Frank Reich - Panthers
3 Brandon Staley - Chargers
4 Arthur Smith - Falcons
5 Ron Rivera - Commanders
6 Mike Vrabel - Titans
7 Bill Belichick (Patriots Possible fire BB)
QUESTION #1:
Who do the NFL teams hire, to replace the HC's they fired?
QUESTION #2: Name the NFL teams that hire a fired HC's?
If I was a GM I'd hire Slowick as my next HC.
DeleteImagine if he had an OL that could sustain a run game.......
DeleteNames of all possible NFL 1St Rd QB draft prospects 2024
ReplyDeletePer CBSSPORTS.COM
1 Caleb Williams USC
2 Drake Maye N, Carolina
3 Jayden Daniels LSU
4 Michael Penix Jr. Washington
5 J.J. McCarthy Michigan
7 Shedeur Sanders Colorado
8 Quinn Ewers Texas
QUESTION:
Names the NFL team(s) that draft a 2024 1St. Rd QB prospects
I've got Penix as a 2nd rounder, and I predict his medicals will reveal he has a degenerative knee. I've got McCarthy as a 3rd rounder. I like Ewers better than both these guys.
ReplyDeleteRazor
DeleteI would agree with you that Penix will drop if he has a medical problem with his knee.....TBD?
The fact that QB guru Steve Sarkisian picked Ewers over Arch Manning got a lot of interest from NFL scouts. He's got a cannon for an arm, but his mechanics and footwork in the pocket, need work.
Razor
DeleteTexas QB Quinn Ewers announced on social media Thursday that he will return to school for his senior season instead of leaving for the NFL Draft.
GEEP,
ReplyDeleteI, pretty much agree with CBS 2024 mock projections. But I will add a surprise (obviously hypothetical) QB picks.
Wash... Caleb Williams
NE...Drake Maye
NYG... Jayden Daniels
Atl...Michael Penix Jr.
Also, I look to these teams...
NYJ, Las Vegas, Ariz, drafting a QB between 3-5 rd.
AES,
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't surprise me if the 9ers drafted a QB. If Pennix falls to the 2nd round I would love for them to trade up for Pennix. I have loved Pennix since the covid year back when he was at Indiana.
Coach,
ReplyDeleteIf the 49ers can garner a trade for Penix in the 2nd, I would consider it a big steal. Personally, I don't see Penix making it out of the 1st rd.
AES,
DeleteI was thinking the same thing before last night but I think last nights performance may have hurt him. That along with health concerns.
Coach,
DeleteAlso, trading for Penix would not be a good fit for him, because it's unlikely that he may see much action behind Purdy.
If they wait until the late 2nd round or late 3rd, Bo Nix, McCarthy, Michael Pratt (Tulane) or S. Sanders but he will probably return to school.
ReplyDeletePICK THE NFL 2024 WILD CARD TEAMS THAT WIN:
ReplyDeletePittsburgh Steelers (7) at Buffalo Bills (2)
Miami Dolphins (6) at Kansas City Chiefs (3)
Cleveland Browns (5) at Houston Texans (4)
Rams (6) at Lions (3)
Eagles (5) at Buccaneers (4)
I'm taking the Bills over the Steelers
The Dolphins over the Chiefs
The Browns over the Texans
The Lions over the Rams
The Buccaneers over the Eagles
GEEP,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your lineup, with the exception of the Eagles beating the Bucs.
AES
ReplyDelete"With the exception of the Eagles beating the Bucs?" I have the Bucks over the Eagles.....
* The only game I'm not sure about is, Miami over the Chiefs.
Per the Miami Herald, Miami is 1W - 4L with Tagovailoa at QB when the temperature is 50 or lower at kickoff! The only win was a 34-13 win over the Jets on Nov. 24 this season, when it was 48 at kickoff.
The Miami v KC game is very interesting. If the game is close towards the end of the 4th QTR, I would have to go with Mahomes. Miami is a little like 49ers in that they need to get a good lead to ensure a win. Coming from behind is not their strong suit.
DeleteWOW! I DODN'T SEE THIS ONE COMING
ReplyDeleteSeahawks remove Pete Carroll as head coach in shocking move, but announced Carroll would remain with the team as an advisor.
https://sports.yahoo.com/seahawks-remove-pete-carroll-as-head-coach-in-shocking-move-191925802.html
Perhaps, Carroll shows interest in the Chargers if they come calling. I don't see any reason why Seattle would deny Petey a chance to coach elsewhere. But yes, interesting firing.
Delete9ers work out veteran CB Hayward in search of DB depth.
ReplyDelete* Hayward, 34, is a 12-y NFL veteran. He tried out with the 49ers on Tuesday at the team’s practice facility in Santa Clara.
There was no indication after the workout whether the 9ers planned to sign Hayward, as the club appeared likely to continue to consider its options.
https://sports.yahoo.com/49ers-veteran-corner-hayward-search-020608172.html
Terrence Williams got the job. They also added Sam Okuayinonu, DE.
DeleteJim Harbaugh to the Seahawks??? Boy I hope not.
ReplyDeleteHe wouldn't stand a chance against Shanny or McVay without Fangio.
DeleteRazor,
DeleteWho knows maybe he leaves Miami to coach with Harbaugh. Also does that mean you think Miami with Fangio could beat the 9ers in the SB?
Fangio is the best DC in the league but he's lost too many key players to injury to make it to the Super Bowl. I don't think Miami's offense is built to play in snow either.
DeleteSpagnuoluo s very good... I have KC beating MIA and getting to the SB again (upsetting BAL) .... I also think Schwartz deserves another shot as a HC. CLE v HOU will be very entertaining.... I think Houston's inability to run the ball will hamper their efforts tho.
DeleteHe would be tried for treason, lol.
ReplyDeleteTwo coaching surprises today. Nick Saban retires
ReplyDeleteWill he take another shot at the pro's or hit the golf links?
ReplyDeleteBelicheck out as NE coach. Quarter of the league having new HCs now! Just thankful we have the stability of KS and JL and even more thankful for the winning culture that they have built.
ReplyDeleteAll that's missing is an SB.
I'm extremely grateful and appreciative of York for getting it right. Shanny should have another 10 years in San Francisco!
DeleteI'm not a Patriot or Seahawks fan. But, Belicheck and Carroll are some of the best head coaches on the modern era. They are throwback coaches of the 80' and 90' and with the game and players so much different today, I wonder if their coaching style and philosophy no longer apply?
ReplyDeleteNick Saban made reference that players are so much different today. Perhaps, the days of old school coaches no longer fit in this era.
SOMETHING I HAVE QUESTIONED ABOUT BB AND NE:
ReplyDeleteHow great would Belicheck's legacy be if Tom Brady had played for
a different NFL team, not with NE?
It didn't take long for things to go south once Brady was gone!
GEEP,
DeleteYou may be right, but the outcome of Belicheck's career in NE has been written. I'm not a fan of Belicheck, but I can't dismiss his six SB wins.
As much as I love Bill Walsh, how would he have done without Joe Montana? Montana was drafted in the 3rd rd, and Brady was the 199 pick. Sometimes teams hit gold. The 49ers have hit gold again with Brock Purdy.
Most yards after catch this season:
ReplyDeleteCeeDee Lamb - 680
Amon-Ra St. Brown - 668
Rashee Rice - 654
Tyreek Hill - 652
Breece Hall - 649
Puka Nacua - 640
Rachaad White - 611
David Njoku - 599
Nico Collins - 549
Ja’Marr Chase - 541
Somethings missing here.
Adjusted net yards per attempt, NFL QBs (includes YPA, TD, INTs, sacks)...
ReplyDelete1. Brock Purdy: 9.0
2. Tua Tagovailoa: 7.5
3. C.J. Stroud: 7.5
4. Lamar Jackson: 7.3
5. Dak Prescott: 7.3
Jordan Hicks is reportedly set to sign a four-year, $44 million contract with the San Francisco Giants, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan on Friday. The 27-year-old right hander spent last season with the St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays.
ReplyDeleteAfter spending most of his career as a reliever, the Giants will be adding Hicks to their starting rotation. He recorded a 3.29 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 2023 in 65 games out of the bullpen for the Cardinals and Blue Jays.

I haven't watched baseball since I was in elementary school when I faked being sick to watch the Reds with Conception, Bench, Geronimo, Rose, Morgan, Foster, Griffy etc. in the World Series!
ReplyDeleteThe Big Red Machine was mowing down every team in their way for years. Until they came up against the small town Oakland A's team that put them to bed.
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone has a subscription to Peacock so they can watch tomorrows Chiefs Dolphins game. This is just another big step towards the NFL becoming 100% pay per view. I haven't watched a Thurs night game in 2 years other than the 9ers.
ReplyDeleteWhy? Is the NFL broke? No way! They are a cash cow that assume all America can't survive without football. They are crossing the line, imho.
ReplyDeleteIt all began when ESPN took Monday Night Football from the working man.
ReplyDeleteI hope football fans don't buy into this greed. If there is a big response, football as we know it, could become a "paid per view" event. How does the idea of paying big money to watch the Superbowl on TV in the future sound?
ReplyDeleteAES,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds exactly like what we will be doing in 10 years or less.
Coach
ReplyDeleteYou are correct.
The danger here is that the NFL may be setting up football fans for this to happen in the near future.
Nick Bosa and Brock Purdy did not make the All-Pro team. I hope they prove the voter's wrong in the post season!
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that Bosa had an All-Pro season. He didn't start playing well until about game 5 or 6. How many QBs make the All-Pro team? I would pick L. Jackson before BP. I would put he and Tua at 2A and 2B. Hopefully this will light a fire under both players to have great playoff runs and even better seasons next year,
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind Bosa wasn't always tasked with rushing the passer to get the sack. A lot of times he was rushing to contain and compress as part of a disciplined assignment strategy by the defensive line.
ReplyDeleteTexans v Browns
ReplyDeleteWOW!
I STILL don't want Schwartz in Seattle........CLE is saddled w the Watson contract to boot.
DeleteIf Schwartz moves to the Seahawks, there's a good chance that the 49ers, Seahawks rivalry continues. I think Squints Schwartz has an ax to grind against the 49ers dating back to the Jim Harbaugh hard butt slap!
ReplyDeleteIs Houston the new favorite in the AFC. Cleve was the best D in the NFL and Hous murdered them.
DeleteThe Browns defense in away games wasn't the same.
DeleteI had Cleveland winning by a couple of scores. Their defense stunk it up.
ReplyDeleteI also had Miami winning a close game v KC. Tua is not the answer for Miami, especially in cold weather.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThe (toy) BOYS are sure looking like SB contenders, losing to GB 27 to 7 at halftime! And Hack Presscott sure looks like an all pro QB on his pick 6 INT to GB's Jaire Alexander.....ROFLMAO
ReplyDeleteNext to Miami, Dallas in the first half, looks like the biggest pretenders in the playoffs! At least, Miami has playing at KC and cold weather as an excuse.
Question: Name the new HC coach that will replace Mike McCarthy if the (toy) BOYS lose to the Packers?
Geep,
DeleteIt will be Dan Quinn if he doesn't get hired at Seattle first.
It won't be Belicheck. He and Jerry World could never co-exist. Belicheck would likely want to be the GM/Head Coach.
ReplyDeleteAnd get paid big for both titles.
Looks like its going to be the Packers next week.
ReplyDeleteUnder,
DeleteAs good as GB looks today, I would rather play them than the Rams
Same, OC.
DeleteAgreed
DeleteCowboys v Packers
ReplyDeleteWOW!
Green Bay O-Line Gave QB Jordan Love time to complete 3 TD's and opened holes for GB RB Aaron Jones to score 3 TD's, dominating the Dallas D. The 9ers will need The D-Line to shut Jones down, pressure (sack) Love and control the GB receivers.
ReplyDeleteThe Packers beating Dallas 48 to 32, at home, should be a wake up call to the 9ers, to take GB serious.
WOW Det 3 possessions 3 TDs. Can they keep it up. Whoever wins this game will be facing the 9ers in the NFCCG
ReplyDeleteNo more Rams.
ReplyDelete9ERS VS PACKERS at Levi stadium: Saturday, Jan. 20 at 5:00pm
ReplyDelete* 9ER OFFENSE VS PACKERS DEFENSE:
The packers defense will be faced with stopping RB CMC, who led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards and scored 21 touchdowns (14 rushing and 7 receiving). Then there are all pros TE Kittle, FB Juszczyk and LT Williams, as well as WR Aiyuk and Samuel.
* Aiyuk was chosen as a 2nd team All-Pro, catching 75 passes for a career-best 1,342 receiving yards.
Samuel joined Hall of Famer Charley Taylor to become the 2nd player in NFL history with at least 4,000 receiving yards and 1,000 rushing yards in his first 5 seasons.
* BP set a 9ers season records with 4,280 passing yards, a 113.0 passer rating and 9.6 yards per pass attempt.
* A key for a 9ers win, will be opening running lanes for CMC and protecting Purdy against a Packers pass rush led by Rashan Gary (9 sacks), Preston Smith (eight) and Kenny Clark (7.5 sacks).
THE 9ER DEFENSE: PRESSURE GB QB LOVE
* GB QB Jordan Love looks to be an emerging start, he got better as the season went on. He finished the regular season with 32 TD passes, 11 INT's and a passer rating of 96.0.
* Love toyed with the Cowgirls defense, completing 16 of 21 passes for 272 yards and 3 TD's to his receivers Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks.
* GB RB Aaron Jones is a load. Finally healthy, he tore off chunks of yardage against Dallas, carrying the ball 21 times for 118 rushing yards and three TD's on the ground.
* DT Armstead is back, returning to action after missing the last 5 games due to foot and knee issues. He'll team up with DT Hargrave to provide the 9ers with a stout interior to stop GB RB A.Jones.
DE Chase Young and Bosa will need to pressure love into making mistakes that 2nd team All-Pro, CB Charvarius Ward, and the 9er DB's can turn into INT's.
* First team All-Pro MLB Fred Warner, who leads the 9ers with 132 tackles, 4 INT's, 4 forced fumbles and 6 tackles for loss, will look to help limit GB RB Aaron Jones and TE Luke Musgrave, while adding to his stats.
SPECIAL TEAMS: These 2 teams do not excel on special teams, as
The 9ers and GB are ranked 25th and 29th, respectively.
* GB rookie, Anders Carlson has missed 5 extra points during the season and 1 more on Sunday against the Cowboys.
* 9er Kicker, Jake Moody, was mostly consistent during his 1st season, but he missed at inopportune times. he heads into his first postseason after a rough Week 18 performance, in which he missed a 38-yard field goal and an extra point. He was 60 for 60 on extra points before missing in a 1 point loss to the Rams.
* 9er Punter, M. Wishnowsky, had his best season with a 42.7 net average on 52 punts. 50% of his punts forced the opposition to begin their drives inside their own 20-yard line.
* GB return man Keisean Nixon was chosen to the All-Pro team for his work on kickoffs.
* 9ers Ray-Ray McCloud is back as the 9ers’ return man on kickoffs and punts after he missed more than a month with fractured ribs.
Also, 9ers core special-teams player George Odum is back after undergoing surgery to repair a torn biceps in late November.
This should be a game the 9ers win by 10+ points, but will depend on 4 things.
1) The 9er O-Line stopping GB's pass rush, giving BP time to find his receivers. 2) Opening holes for CMC to run thru. 3) The 9er defense Keeping GB RB Aron Jones out of the end zone and 4) Pressuring
Love into making mistakes and controlling his receivers YAC.
GEEP,
ReplyDeleteAnother good breakdown. You are on point in your analysis.
For me it's simple (I'm a simple guy), stop Love and A. Jones and the 49ers go to the NFCCG.
That Packers will be coming in on an emotional high and this might work to their detriment. If the 49ers climb to a quick lead there young players could go into a funk.
What an evening! Two of our hated rivals eliminated.. Cowboys tears...so sweet! :)
ReplyDeleteEverything lining up for us....gonna be a special season! Go Niners!
The weather channels 7 day forecast predicts heavy rain for late Sat. BP has not handled hard rain very well in the past. CMC, Mitchell, Mason and Deebo better gain better than 200 yards or the 9ers could be the next big upset. Take GB and 10 if its raining.
ReplyDelete
