Purdy Power

Brock Purdy has a chance to deliver the most efficient season in NFL history behind pass protection that ranks #22 in the NFL.

Deebo Samuel: "You know, not only are we just throwing the ball across the middle, we throwing it downfield, and so now I think it puts a lot of pressure on teams as they can’t gameplan us like they used to.”

Shots fired across the bay! Getting to the Super Bowl with Jimmy G has to be one of the greatest Heach Coaching achievements in the modern era.

  1. Raheem Mostert was incredible the 2nd half of that season as well as the playoffs. That was also the last year the 9ers had a good to great O line.

I know it won't happen, but just out of curiosity....... 1) Who (in the 2024 draft), would you draft and replace on 9ers O-line?
      2) Would you trade up for an OT to eventually replace TW?
      3) This may be the deepest draft of OT's in years. You agree?
      4) If you wouldn't trade up for an OT, would you draft a C to
replace J. Brendel? If so, who and what round ?
      5) would you draft a CB? If so, who and what round?

    2. I would definitely be trying to get an OT early. Not sure who, but it should be the #1 priority in my book.

    3. I agree, Scooter. When Trent ever retires, there are no young OL players on the current 49ers roster that I can point to and say, he's the hier-apparent. Not sure if there are any veteran FAs avaliable in 2024 right now. But even if there are, the 49ers still need to draft a blue chip OL player to shore up the OL for the next 8-10 years.

    4. Scooter, Kiran Amegadjie, OT, Yale is smart, moves well and has the prototypical build for the position. I think you could get him in the 3rd round.

  2. Purdy's on field processing is up there with the greats. The reason nobody talks about that is because of how easy he makes it look.

  3. Razor / anyone
If you don't draft an OT in the 1st Rd., what position would you draft in RD 1?
    1) EDGE to replace Chase Young? 2) A CB to replace Charvarius Ward when he retires? 3) A Position other than EDGE and, or CB?

    1. I've already gone on record that it'll be a DE.

      Delete
    2. Depends on what they do with Aiyuk/ Young.

      Delete
    3. I think they'll sign Aiyuk and let Young walk for the compensatory. Draft a very good DE that could get pushed down to them at the end of round 1.

      Delete
    4. I'm not ruling out the team trading Aiyuk away. And if they do, they might re-sign Young.

      Delete
    5. Aiyuk is the best route running wr in the league, and has developed a rapport with Purdy. He'll get 25 mil a year. I'd be very surprised if Shanny doesn't want to retain him.

    6. Razor: "I've already gone on record that it'll be a DE."
      * Jared Verse Fl. St? 6'4" X 260, 40 = 4.59s with 9 sacks
      * May be gone B-4 9ers draft? CONCERNING: Tackling = 59%

      Delete
    7. 49ers will no doubt want to retain him. They wanted to retain Buckner too. At some point you have to let some guys go, unfortunately.

As good as Aiyuk is, I am not sure he is worth $25M a year to this team.

    8. Financially they have the most money in their defensive line, and I don't see them adding to that with the type of contract Young should command.

I believe they have 39 mill to roll over to next year, and 25 mill is the going rate for a number 1 receiver. Seems to me the 49ers have embraced staggering restructures as a way to sign their top players, and fill out the rest of their roster with day 3 draft picks. As long as the salary cap keeps increasing it's a sound strategy.

Doesn't hurt that your franchise quarterback is only counting for 800 grand against the cap. I believe by the time comes to pay Brock Purdy what he's worth the salary cap should be near 300 million.

      Delete
    9. Geep, haven't got around to scouting any DE's yet.

    10. I wonder how much Young will actually command in FA. He's been good since joining the 49ers, certainly helped turn the 49ers DL back into a dominant one. It's been a good year for him. But he's also clearly not the main threat on the 49ers DL - in fact more like the 4th guy. Is he showing enough to get a big contract somewhere? He might be a guy that needs to sign a 1-year prove it contract.

And yes, the 49ers definitely rolled money forward. But they are also already expected to be over the cap, even with approximately $40M rolled over.

Randy Gregory will be cut (or perhaps extended, potentially, though I doubt it) to get them under the cap. But they'll still need to do some manoeuvring. They're in a tight cap spot.

Getting Aiyuk's $14M off the books via trade could help. And they don't have a lot of space moving forward to fit in an extension.

As a result, I'm very much not ruling out a Buckner situation happening.

    11. DE's like Young get paid. Montez Sweat just got a 4 year, 98 mill contract and I don't even think he's as good as Young.

2024 salary cap is expected to be north of 240 mill. Aiyuk's cap hit for next year will be much lower if they were to extend him.

      Delete
    12. You just need to look at the draft compensation given up for the two, and that Sweat was given a new deal immediately after the trade, to know how the league currently value the two players.

Young's injury history and perceptions of lack of effort hurt him.

      Delete
    13. Right, but those perceptions weren't measured against the circumstance he found himself. A broken, dysfunctional franchise adrift on mediocrity. I haven't heard anything but positive remarks regarding those perceptions from the 49ers, and assuming he finishes the year healthy, he'll have proven that as well.

The Bears did give up more but they also signed Ngakoue for 11 million and he's an older one trick pony with a consistent reputation for being a poor team mate, and gone from team to team just like Clowney. I'd be SHOCKED if Young didn't get at least 18-20 million on a one year "prove it" deal.

      Delete
    14. Clowney has struggled to get the long term contract he's wanted for years, and his production has been better/ more consistent than Young.

I can see Young needing to settle for a 1 year contract at little over $10M.

      Delete
    15. For me, Clowney's been overrated as a pass rushing DE, and his strength is stopping the run. Didn't he play a full season like once in his career? I think he had like 29 pressures and two sacks in 12 games playing alongside Myles Garrett!

      Delete
    16. According to NextGen Stats Young ranks 5th with 40 pressures so far this year, right behind Nick Bosa with 41.

  4. I would like to retain Aiyuk, but I imagine it comes down to the price.....personally, I see him taking a Brinks load and I would want the 49ers to look at a WR early and grab a vet-I believe TW may play a couple more...and there is basically ZERO depth at wr (Danny Gray, anyone?). I would also like to see Ferrell extended.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I doubt we will ever know how good Gray can be because he can't get on the field. My philosophy is, if you can't play, you can't stay. At this point, I believe that Bell has overtaken Gray, and it will remain that way going forward.

      Delete
    2. dptown,
I bet you a dollar that TW retires if the 9ers win the SB

      Delete
    3. I'd take that bet, OldCoach. I think Trent Williams will play another 3 years.

      Delete
    4. And the 49ers will win 2 of the next 3 Super Bowls!

      Delete
    5. OK Razor thats a bet. I don't think I have ever made a bet that I wanted to lose more

      Delete
    6. I agree with Razor on the 3........ I am just going to hope for one Lombardi for now - I do like his prediction..... if SF stays healthy and plays to their potential, 2 of 3 is attainable.

      Delete
  5. Gray has shown nothing so far so I wouldn’t count on him to have a future. However, Ronnie Bell is looking good so they do have more than zero depth.

  6. Jennings is the wr I expect to depart in f/a. That would leave the door open for either Bell or Gray.

  7. Purdy's been under pressure on 39% of his dropbacks. that's 3% more than the next mvp candidate. he doesn't get anywhere near the credit he should for 1) avoiding sacks 2) extending/creating out of structure.

    1. I find the lengths that some people in the media and twitter analysts go to in order to discredit Purdy quite remarkable.

If he doesn't win MVP I'm fine with it, there are a few guys that could be worthy of it this year. But Purdy is definitely one of those that is very worthy of it.

He'll get his flowers at some point if he maintains this level of play.

    2. Lots of jealous Purdy haters out there. I'd prefer he win the SB MVP!

    3. Razor,
This has been my thinking all along. SB 🏆!

    4. I think the 49ers win 2 of the next 3 SB's.

    5. Yes! That would give the 49ers the
most SB wins of any team in the history of the Superbowl era.
      Let's go!

  9. WEEK 15: 9ERS VS ARIZONA:
    * 1. BP is putting up MVP numbers, Aiyuk has 56 receptions, 1,053 yards and 6 TD's He leads the NFL with 18.8 yards per reception on the season, Deebo Samuel has 45 receptions, 739 yards and 5 TD's. * Christian McCaffrey is the most electric player in the game, with 226 carries, 1177 yards, averaging 5.2 YPC and 12 TD's. He also has 52 reception, 437 receiving yards and 5 TD.
    * Then there's TE Kittle, with 811 yards on 53 receptions, ranks 17th in the NFL with 15.3 yards per catch and 6 TD's .
    * The 9ers are (10W - 3L) VS Arizona, (3W - 10L). It should be a walk in the park, BUT...Coming off 2 emotional wins over the Eagles and the Seahawks, will the 9ers get caught in a TRAP GAME looking ahead to the Ravens?
    * The 9er defense will be missing S Talanoa Hufanga, out with a torn ACL. Rookie safety Ji'Ayir Brown has replaced him. Both starting DT's, Hargrave (hamstring), and Armstead (foot/knee).
    * Armstead and Hargrave will be replaced by J. Kinlaw and K. Givens
while Kalia Davis is expected to see action as a rotation player.
    * Also, linebacker Dre Greenlaw and cornerback Charvarius Ward are questionable. If Ward is unable to play, Deommodore Lenoir and Ambry Thomas will start on the outside, with Isaiah Oliver sliding in at NB in passing situations.
    * Fred Warner has picked off a team-leading 4 passes. He also has 107 tackles, five TFL, 2 sacks, and 9 passes defended.
    * In terms of passing yards conceded, the 9ers have given up 2,887 (222.1 per game), ranking 15th in the league.
The 49ers are allowing 15.8 points per game, the fewest in the NFL.
    * The 9ers have only allowed 6 players to pile up more than 100 receiving yards in a game this season.
    * The 9ers have only allowed 12 players to catch a touchdown pass against them this season.
    * On offense, Both OG's, S. Burford and A. Banks are questionable. Veteran Jon Feliciano will be in line to start.

    * ARIZONA IS RESTED AND COMING OFF A BYE WEEK: * The Cardinals QB Kyler Murray, will be starting! He'll be trying to prove to his FO they should keep him as their future staring QB. After beating the Steelers, the Arizona players will be on an emotional high and will see the 9ers as their chance to show the FO how good they are and why they should remain part of the team!

THE KEY TO BEATING ARIZONA: STOP QB KYLER MURRAY!
    * Historically, Kyler Murray is the type of mobile QB that the 9ers have had problems containing. The 9er D-Line will need to play disciplined and keep him in the pocket. DC Steve Wilks explained the keys to defending against Murray.
    * "I think it’s a combination of a lot of things," said Wilks. "Number one, we’ve got to be sound in our defensive responsibilities as far as the zone-read, not allowing him to be able to get outside the pocket because he's definitely going to pull it. LAnd then also his ability to be able to scramble and go make a big play.
"I think it's a little different than [Eagles QB] Jalen [Hurts] than what we faced a couple of weeks ago, but it's still the same premise that we’ve got to make sure that we contain him. And once again, I think he's doing an excellent job of going through his progression, trying to stay in the pocket, going through his different reads and putting the ball where it needs to go.”
    * Murray is a bigger challenge in space than Hurst, with his speed and elusiveness. Not to mention that he does damage from the pocket and excels on the run for the scramble drill to deliver to his wide receivers. It's crazy to even fathom it initially, but Murray presents challenges that Hurst doesn't.

  10. * PLAYERS NOT NAMED MURRAY THE 9ER D MUST STOP TO WIN
Stop the run: The Cardinals rank 9th in rushing, averaging 123.9 yards per game. Running the ball is the strength of their team, so the 49ers must take away the run to make the Cardinals one-dimensional.
RB Conner James: 129 carries, 631 yards, averages per carry 4.9 yards and 4 TD's.
The 9ers must also be aware of WR Rondale Moore out of the backfield. He's responsible for 156 rushing yards.
TE Trey McBride: Leads Ariz with 56 receptions, 610 yards and 2 TD's
and he'll be matched up against 9er LB F. Warner.
    # 1 WR Hollywood Brown: 51 receptions, 574 yards and 4 TD's.
    # 2 WR Rondale Moore: 29 receptions, 260 yards and 1 TD
If Ward is unable to play, they'll be matched up by D. Lenoir and Ambry Thomas.
    * The Cardinals' offense has had trouble finding the end zone this season, as it ranks 27th in the league with 17.7 points per contest. When it comes to yards, the team ranks 27th with 3,852 total yards (296.3 per game). In the red zone, the Cardinals are not airing it out very often compared to the rest of the league, ranking 6th in the NFL with 39 total red-zone pass attempts (50.6% red-zone pass rate). BUT REMEMBER....The Cardinals QB is Kyler Murray!
I see the 9ers starting slow the first half and having trouble containing
Murray! The key to 9ers winning the game will be Wilks making half time adjustments......
    9ers 31 VS Ariz. 17
