Gameday Week 15: San Francisco 49ers vs. Arizona Cardinals

Good afternoon and welcome to gameday live. Today's divisional matchup features the 49ers 2nd most yards, 3rd most points and 1st in DVOA offense against the Cardinals 2nd worst in DVOA, 31st against the pass, 28th against the run defense that's allowing the 3rd most points per game. All added up it points to another beatdown. The Cardinals are coming off a win against the Steelers, and a bye which gives them a big rest advantage. Murray's return has given their offense a shot in the arm, and Conner has given the 49ers some trouble on the ground. The 49ers will be without their starting DT's, and it'll be up to Kinlaw/Givens/Davis to hold the line. Some speculate this is another trap game for San Francisco but listening to the coaches and players, it sounds as if they're locked in like its a playoff game. I like the 49ers to win 41-17 and stay on track to earn that number 1 seed for the playoffs. Go Niners!

#49ers inactives: QB Brandon Allen (3rd QB) RB Elijah Mitchell (knee) LB Oren Burks (knee) TE Ross Dwelley (ankle) G Spencer Burford (knee) DT Arik Armstead (foot, knee) DT Javon Hargrave (hamstring)

  2. The 9ers have the talent to embarrass Arizona! But will they?
After two emotional wins against the Eagles and Seahawks, don't be surprised if the 9ers are caught looking ahead to the Ravens and come out flat in the first half. IMO, this may be good. Why? Because it will give Purdy an opportunity to show he is the team leader, NOT just a game manager!
It will also, IMO, give DC wilks an opportunity to prove his bones. To show he can make the adjustments needed to stop Murray, a mobile QB the 9ers have historically had trouble stopping, even when the 9er
    defense is missing several starters.

  3. Contain Murray and it should go very well for the Niners.

I agree, containing Murray is the 9ers number one priority...
    * But IMO, the key to beating Arizona is stopping RB Conner James and making the Arizona offense one dimensional. Then the 9er defense needs to contain Arizona TE Trey McBride, who Leads Arizona receiver with 56 receptions. Also, Arizona # 1 WR Hollywood Brown, with 51 receptions.
    * If the 9er can stop RB Conner James from scoring and under 60 yards, it will force Murray to beat the 9ers with his arm!
    * Control Arizona TE Trey McBride and WR Hollywood Brown and it
will force Murray to try to beat the 9ers with his legs.

  6. Need a long drive to give the defense some rest.

  7. Ward is looking good. Don't think Murray saw him, resulting in a pick 6
    and 9er lead.

  8. The defense is looking very similar to the defense when the Niners lost three games in a row.

  9. Okay offense long time consuming drive for 7.

  11. Piss poor tackling and I've seen enough of Bell on PR duties.

  12. Purdy made a great pass, prior to the TD, under intense pressure.

  15. No doubt Prescott will be given every excuse under the sun this week in the media to forgive a down performance from their MVP elect.

    2. Most passing yards through the first 13 games of a season in 49ers history:

      1. Joe Montana — 3,637 (1990)
      2. Steve Young — 3615 (1998)
      3. Brock Purdy — 3,553 (2023)

  16. Prescott entered the game a candidate for NFL MVP. And then he completed 6 of 13 first half passes for 43 yards.
Then 2nd half, Prescott overthrows to Brandin Cooks that results in an interception by Bills CB Christian Benford! Bills up 4 TD's 31-3.
Final Dallas 10.....Bills 31.....Doesn't sound like MVP to me.....lol

    1. They'll find excuses. Weather was terrible. Teammates let him down. One game doesn't tell the story. Blah blah blah.

That's true, but we know better! And so do the Cowgirls....They
      haven't forgot the 9ers 42 to 10 beat down!
Prescott MVP = Most Vulnerable Pretender!

  17. Balt. and Jackson may run it down the 9ers throats next week. Whose ever team wins next week Jackson or Purdy, that QB should win the MVP. Unless CMC goes for over 150 total yards.

    2. As far as I'm concerned, Purdy has already locked up the MVP.

  18. 9ers week 15 VS Arizona:
Purdy turns in another big 9er win, completing 16 of 25 pass attempts for 242 yards, 4 four TD's, zero interceptions and a passer rating of 135.3.

  19. Jake Moody is now 53-of-53 on extra points this year. That's the second-most makes in the league.

  20. The 49ers are the third team to ever put together three straight wins with DVOA over 70%.

    The others: 1989 49ers and 1996 Packers.

    1. ^ That is an amazing stat. Purdy has the fewest attempts followed by Tua which is 74 more than Brock. Mahomes has 140 more attempts. One can only imagine how many yards Purdy would have if he had 74 more attempts let alone 140.

    2. The top 19 total passing yards QB's have more attempts than Purdy.

    3. It's a trap thinking how many more yards he'd have if he had more pass attempts. There's only so much game time and so many yards to pick up per drive. 49ers have second most total yards and second most passing yards in the NFL behind Miami. To give him more attempts wouldn't necessarily mean more yards, would either mean taking carries away from CMC (which is a big part of opening up the passing game) or Purdy being less efficient.

The reason he has so few attempts is largely down to being efficient- he picks up the yards they need not only in big chunks but also at a high completion %. As a result, he doesn't need as any attempts.

    4. It was just an illustration Scooter, it was more or less to show how well Purdy is passing the ball. It was also to show he wasn't throwing short. You don't amass that yardage with fewer attempts with short passes.

  23. The 49ers now have 52.1% weighted DVOA, which gives more strength to recent games. They are the first team to ever be over 50% as of Week 15. That's stronger than the 2007 Patriots were in weighted DVOA because they had closer games late in the season.
