Brock's Clock
Brock held the ball the longest yet against the Seahawks during this three game winning streak, 3.41 seconds, while the offensive line has been ticking up in pass block win rates. Against Tampa it was 60% good for their 5th best outing, Jags 68% good for 3rd best and most recently against the Seahawks 76% good for their 2nd best. I attribute this to a confluence of things starting with the return of Trent Williams, Purdy getting more comfortable manipulating the pocket, and his willingness to look downtown for the big play. Not sure he'll get to hold the ball as long against Philly given they rank 5th in pass rush win rate, and opposing quarterbacks averaging 2.66 seconds to throw, which is the 2nd fastest in the NFL.

The return of Williams has a lot to do with BP getting more time but the addition of Feliciano and return of Banks have also improved the 9er O line. Last game I believe the largest improvement came from BP's ability to move in the pocket. I think the weakest link on the O line is now Brendel, he gets over powered by bigger DTs or NTs
ReplyDeleteWe need a 325 lb center that can move and anchor.
DeleteRazor,
DeleteI totally agree. The only problem is Brendel is under contract for 3 more seasons after this one. That was about the worst signing they have done in the last few years along with Oliver.

DeleteGot it....Forgot about a 9er 3Rd comp pick.....What is your opinion on Oregon Center Jackson Powers-Johnson as a 9er 3Rd round draft prospect?
Looks like starter potential with no glaring red flags.
DeleteRazor,
ReplyDeleteJust looking ahead to the draft.
I've felt for a while that OL Zac Zinter (Michigan) could drop to the 2nd rd and possibly giving the 49ers a shot at him.
Now, with Zinter sustaining a bad leg injury over the weekend, he may drop to a mid to late 2nd rd. According to initial medical reports, Zac had no ligament damage, only broken bones that will fully heal by TC.
Do you think the 49ers could use a 2nd on him?
Not sure. They haven't shown any propensity to invest a high round pick at RG. Banks was always slotted for LG even though he played RG. I'd be all for it if it were me.
DeleteAs to which O line position the 9ers will draft, it will depend greatly on whether T. Williams returns. If he retires I could see them bundling their 1st and 2nd to move up to get a RT. If he returns I could see them drafting a LT with their 1st pick and sliding McKivitz into RG.
DeleteBeal activated
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of surprised they activated Beal. I thought they would activate Hawkins. Currently they only have 2 safeties on the 53. I wonder if they see Womack or Luter as a safety? After the draft I thought Beal might make an interesting ST player. How many 6'4" 250 lbs players who run a 4.48 40 do you see on coverage teams?
DeleteI'd like to see Beal get some NFL game experience especially if the 49ers can't sign Chase after the season. Beal's speed can be a big plus in year two.
DeleteI see Oliver as the natural backup safety. Beal probably won't be active but since he's on the roster he'll be able to continue to practice, whereas he was in his last week of IR and wouldn't be able to keep practicing if not activated.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how the PS works but I just watched a D. Lombardi Youtube video, he said that the 9ers can "flex" Taylor Hawkins up to the 53 without releasing anyone from the current 53. I'm not sure how that would work.
ReplyDeleteHe is right OldCoach. We can bring up 2 practice players per game to the 53, so that makes a total of 55.
DeleteHowever only 48 can be ACTIVE.
One more caveat is that a PS squad player can be called up for 3 weeks/games per season. If they are called for the 4th time, then they will have to sign onto the 53 man roster.
Well that clears that up. TY Mug
DeleteWR Brandon Aiyuk today:
ReplyDelete"I think we are just ready to play, ready for a new week, first game of December. We definitely know what happened last season, a lot of words going back and forth but despite that we have another opportunity, they have another opportunity, to play football. I think both sides are excited for that."
Spoken like a true leader. Respecting the opponent is half the battle. Let your play on the field do the talking.
Part I....we will see this team again. Gonna be a cracker of a game!
Philly is the 4th worst DVOA 10-1 team in history with a +65 point differential. 49ers are one of the best DVOA offenses in history with a +140 point differential.
ReplyDeleteHouston OT Patrick Paul (6-7, 315) has officially declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. I got him as a late 1st early 2nd round prospect.
ReplyDeleteYale LT Kiran Amegadjie, 6'5 320 pounds and excellent wingspan. I've got him rated as a 3rd round prospect.
ReplyDeleteRazor What made you switch from Oregon St. OT Taliese Fuaga, to Houston OT Patrick Paul? Do you believe Fuaga will be moving up the draft boards and Paul will still
ReplyDeletebe available?
I still like him but think he'll go top 20. Honestly, this is a great draft to need an OT.
DeleteI wonder how many QBs will go in the first round? It may push a lot of very good players back in the draft. I think it will be a very good draft for any team who is not looking for a QB in the first 3 rounds.
DeleteI think a very good pass rushing DE will get pushed down from not just the QB's, but OT's as well. I think thats what we do with the first pick is DE.
DeleteRazor
ReplyDeleteYale LT Kiran Amegadjie was not on my radar. You're the first to mention him, so I checked him out.
NFL DRAFT BUZZ gives him a good scouting report

I think Foerster could develop him into Williams eventual successor in 3 years.
DeleteZach Cunningham ruled out for the Eagles. An already suspect LB group just got weaker.
ReplyDeleteRazor
ReplyDeleteAs a follow up to your post on Zach Cunningham....An extract from an article by Charles McDonald....
* Perhaps the most baffling shortcoming for the Eagles is their run defense. According to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, the Eagles rank 21st in expected points allowed per carry (-0.04) and 17th in success rate (60.9%). That’s with a defensive line that features Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Fletcher Cox, Haason Reddick, Josh Sweat and Brandon Graham. Even though guys like Cox and Graham have gotten old and aren’t quite as effective as they used to be, they’re still useful players to have in a front seven. Despite that defensive line talent, the Eagles rank 31st in expected points allowed per carry (0.61) and 32nd in success rate (16.7%) on all third-and-medium, third-and-short and fourth-down carries.
Part of the issue has been that the Eagles’ linebacker group hasn’t been very sharp this year. Zach Cunningham and Nicholas Morrow have taken the majority of the LB snaps, which hasn’t necessarily been a good thing. They’re more journeymen players at this point in their careers and that shines through a bit when they’re asked to make plays outside the box. There are moments when Carter and Davis show their youth with lapses of poor play or misreading something.....
* Looking forward to CMC having a 2 TD day and a prediction! * Moody kicks a last minute TD for a 9er win.
9ers 24 VS Eagles 21
My biggest concern this week is the weather and how BP will handle it. According to BP he only played in one wet and cold game in college (against Drake if my memory serves me) and he struggled mightily. As a pro his only inclement game was against Cleveland and once again he struggled mightily in the first 3 quarters when the weather was at its worst. Phil. weather Sun. calls for rain and temps in the low 50s. If BP struggles with the weather again it doesn't bode well for games in Dec, Jan and Feb.
ReplyDeleteYep. That's a concern for me too. He needs to find a way to be effective in bad weather.
DeleteThat last post was mine
ReplyDeleteCoach,
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the ball slip out of Brock's hand on a pass against Cleveland, I thought that it was attributed to him having small hands.
But, Purdy's hand size measures at 9.4, while the taller Joe Barrow measures at 9 inches.
Purdy should be fine if there's rain on Sunday. I expect Brock to have a good showing. But every player must bring their A game to beat the Eagles.
TBD
Purdy has the exact same hand size as Mahomes.
DeletePlaying effectively in bad weather doesn't only have to do with hand size. I played JUCO ball with a QB who had huge hands. We played 2 games that season in the rain and he had a terrible time holding on to the ball. I'm not sure what the other factors are in handling the ball in bad weather but there are other factors other than hand size.
ReplyDeletePhil. Weather forecast for 12/03/2023 // Game time 1:25 PM
ReplyDeleteNot bad: light rain (0.01 to 0.05 in) ~50 deg. and wind 6 - 8 MPH ENE

Former #49ers LB Bill Romanowski talks about a conversation he had with Mike Shanahan on Brock Purdy:
ReplyDeleteBill: Mike, what is it about him?
Mike: Bill, the first practice I laid eyes on him, I saw it in him.
ReplyDelete9ERS VS EAGLES PLAYER MATCHUPS:
* In 11 games this season, CMC has 1,328 scrimmage yards and 16 TD'S. It's not just his ability to run the ball, you also have to account for his receiving.
* Then there's Kittle, who has 46 catches for 667 yards and 5 TD's. The Eagles have given up 55 catches for 520 yards and 6 TD's to opposing TE's. Also, it's likely LB Zach Cunningham (hamstring) won’t play. That means LB's Morrow and Elliss will start and they'll have trouble double covering either Kittle or CMC.
The question then is, can either Morrow, or Elliss, cover Kittle, or CMC
as a receiver? TBD!
* Eagles CB's vs. Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk:
Deebo said Eagles CB, James Bradberry, is “trash.”
The 9ers have a strong 1-2 punch with Aiyuk and Samuel, who are 3Rd and 4Th in receptions this year. Aiyuk has 45 catches for 881 yards and 5 TD's, while Samuel has 34/474/1 this season in 9 games. I see
Slay matching up with the speedier Aiyuk, which would give us all the Samuel-Bradberry matchup we want to see! I look for Deebo to put up some numbers against Bradberry!
* Haason Reddick vs. Colton McKivitz:
The 9ers O line is descent, but have allowed 21 sacks all season, which ranks tied for 4th fewest in the NFL. Left tackle Trent Williams is 35 now but is still playing at an incredibly high level.
A matchup that's in the Eagles’ favor, is Reddick against RT McKivitz.
I look for the 9ers to block Reddick with a backup TE, rather than risk
getting BP injured AGAIN!!!!!
McKivitz was a 5th Rd. pick who's in his 1st season as a full-time starter. He's given up a team-high 5 sacks, 3, QB hits and 27 total pressures (according to ProFootballFocus). So if there’s a weak spot on the line, that’s it and Reddick could have a big performance. And it also really extends to the entire right side of the line. RG S Burford hasn’t been that solid either.
Reddick, 29, has 8 1/2 sacks in 11 games this season and has had another couple taken from him on intentional grounding calls. While Josh Sweat has been the Eagles’ most consistent edge rusher this season. Sweat however, will have to deal with TW in this game.
* McKivitz is a former fifth-round pick who is in his first season as a full-time starter. He has given up a team-high five sacks, 3, QB hits and 27 total pressures, according to ProFootballFocus. So if there’s a weak spot on the line, that’s it and Reddick could have a big performance. And it also really extends to the entire right side of the line. Right guard Spencer Burford hasn’t been that solid either.
* Lane Johnson vs. Nick Bosa:
Getting Johnson back for this one is a big deal. Bosa is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year after an 18 1/2-sack season in 2022. He’s still the best player on the D-line, but there are other pieces to worry about. Javon Hargrave switched sides this offseason and has rushed the QB at a high level. Hargrave is 2nd on the team with 6 sacks. And the 9ers still have A Armstead and they added Chase Young at the trade deadline. The 9ers have 33 sacks as a team so far
this season and would love to add more against the Eagles.
ReplyDelete* D’Andre Swift vs. 9ers run defense:
Swift has been the Eagles’ best RB all season, but even Kenny Gainwell and Boston Scott chipped in last week against the Bills. Swift is just 29 scrimmage yards away from 1,000 on the season and he’s been pretty good the last 2 weeks, rushing for 76 yards against the Chiefs and 80 yards against the Bills. He’s also averaged 6.0 yards per carry over the last two games.
The last time these 2 teams played the Eagles had 148 rushing yards but the Eagles were able to build an early lead and kill clock in the 2nd half. THE 9ERS NEED TO SCORE EARLY...Keep the Eagles offense on the bench and keep their D on the field.
* Jalen Hurts vs. 9ers takeaway defense:
Hurts is the favorite to win the league MVP award in 2023 and he’s been playing well, especially in the 2nd halve, to lead the Eagles to wins. But he's turned the football over. Through 11 games, he's thrown a career-high interceptions with 10, and he’s also lost 6 fumbles. His interception percentage of 2.8% ranks 8th in the NFL.
* As we all know, turnovers are a big deal. Especially because the 9ers D is opportunistic. They’re tied for 2nd in the NFL in total takeaways with 21 and they’re first in the NFL with 15 interceptions. The 9ers’ leaders in int's this season are Fred Warner and Talanoa Hufanga with three apiece. UNFORTUNATELY, Hufanga suffered a torn ACL in Week 11 and is out for the season! Who replaces Hufanga, and how well he plays, could determine the outcome of the game!.
Rookie Ji'Ayir Brown was the next man up on Sunday and had an impact on the game after initially giving up a long completion to Bucs wideout Rakim Jarrett on his first defensive play. Brown ended the game with four tackles, three passes defended (including a key fourth-down pass breakup with the Bucs threatening to make it a one-score game), and the game-sealing interception in the end zone.
IT SAID THE POST WAS TOO LONG...SO I HAD TO BREAK IT UP INTO 2 SECTIONS.
Geep, you should of emailed razor and used it as an article.
DeleteMy #2 biggest worry about this weeks game (#1 is BPs ability to throw or hold on to a wet ball) is will A. Armstead be healthy. He needs to be at 100% or the Eagles could run for over 130 yards. If they can run for 130 or more they will beat the 9ers.
ReplyDeleteGEEP,
ReplyDeleteGreat breakdown. I feel that Hurt's ability to run for positive yrds will be a big plus in this game. The 49ers LBs will need to be leary of this throughout the game and especially in the 4th QTR if the score is close. This will be a big test for the 49ers and for Brock if the team falls behind and needs to make a come-back. So many interesting angles at play for this one. Getting my popcorn ready!
