Week 7 Monday Night Football Live Blog: 49ers vs Vikings

Good evening everyone and welcome to the live blog for Niners football. Tonight we have a matchup with both teams missing key components to their respective offenses. The 49ers will be without, Trent Williams and Deebo Samuel, while the Vikings will be without Justin Jefferson. The 49ers are coming off a heartbreaking loss, while the Vikings are coming off a win, albeit against the Bears and the Vikings 19 points is the lowest offensive output against the Bears this year. I would point out that 7 of those points came via their defense, and the 49ers defense is only allowing 14.5 points per game. The 49ers achilles heel has been defending the run. The Vikings cannot run the ball. No team has turned the ball over more than the Vikings and the 49ers are ranked 5th in the NFL with 11 takeaways. These are recipes for disaster and I expect the 49ers to cook Minnesota 38-10. Go Niners!

#49ers’ inactives: QB Brandon Allen (No. 3 QB) WR Deebo Samuel (shoulder) T Trent Williams (ankle) RB Ty Davis-Price DL Kalia Davis LB Jalen Graham TE Brayden Willis

  3. AES,
Moody is having head issues. Wilkes is having poor defensive calling issues.
Both, could add up to another embarrassing game.

  4. This defense is pathetic. Wilks is a bum.

  5. Lets wait for the full game before crucifying the Defense. Offense has a Fumble lost (-3) and ST has a FG Missed (-3).

At worst, we should be 10-6 now.

    1. Disagree. As the highest paid DL in the league we have every right to expect elite performance. Vikings have been running over them and have definitely outschemed Wilks.

  7. No need to blitz there. What the hell is Wilks doing. If we lose this game because of the poor D play calls, I say run him out of town.

Ward had the pass stolen from his arms. But, Wilkes is putting the defense in bad situations.
Can the 49ers win a SB with him and Moody? I'm beginning to have some serious doubts.
Cubus, you're right. Why call a blitz with about 16 seconds left?

My concern back in August with Purdy throwing Int's in TC was that hopefully it didn't carry over into the season. Those concerns are now manifesting.
Two crucial Int's in this game at inopportune moments really hurt. But, I'm more miffed at Wilkes tonight. No team should be crushing the 49ers defense for over 400 yrds.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Purdy was not good. He had two chances, came up short on both. Offense as such played like crap. Why was Jordan Mason not involved? Shanahan has these personal preferences which are head scratching. It was rock bottom for Offense.

And below offense....there is 20 feet of crap and then our Defense. What a $#&*show today! That TD before the second half was the difference in this game. Bone head call.

Our D, O, ST cant hold a candle to the Eagles. After the Cowboys game, looks like everyone thought we won the Superbowl! SMH

Looks like it is gonna be a Chiefs vs Eagles SB again.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wilks is terrible
    The D line is weak
The O line can not run block and we are beginning to see why BP was drafted where he was. I was all over him about Ints all camp and i'm finally being shown correct.

Mug, the only solace is that all we need to do is win our division and hope for the best in post season. But, with the Bengals, Eagles, Ravens and don't count out the Seahawks coming up, things could get shaky.

  18. Interesting Stat:

#49ers fall to 0-36 under Kyle Shanahan when trailing by 8+ points in 4th quarter in regular season or playoffs. Niners have lost 37 straight in all in that scenario. Only Panthers have longer streak at 45 straight.

    Are you kidding me!!!?

    1. I was just gonna post that. SB winning coaches do not have that kind of negative statistic. It really bums me out.

      Delete
    2. This stat to me means that KS is not a superbowl winning coach.

      Delete
    3. Yeah....accountability is the problem with KS. I guess he thinks he is better than he is and now this is the same mentality with the team. We lost the NFCCG and we were like "Oh we are better than the Eagles....if only our QB was not sacked". Come on!

Stop the Freakin' excuses and understand who you are as a team and acknowledge the shortcomings. This is the first step to get better.

Until we beat the Eagles...I don't want anyone mouthing off on our Offense.

All said and done, I think we now have to go at least 3-3 in these 6 games to clinch the division.

      Bengals
      Jags
      Hawks
      Eagles
      Hawks
      Ravens

      and must win...

      Bucs
      Cardinals
      Rams
      Commanders

This will bring us to 12-5 which will be good for 2nd or 3rd seed.

The disconcerting thing is that based on the way we played the last two weeks, I won't be surprised if we go 1-5 in those 6 games.

      Delete
  19. Anyway...after that rant, here are some positives (if you can call it that)

    - Nice bounce back from Jake moody with that 55 yarder.
    - Coverage from ST was better and improved

Nothing in life is ever As Good or As Bad as it seems. So I'm still hopeful we can turn this around.

  20. Of the 452 yrds given up by the 49ers defense 378 came on passes. That is inexcusable! Cousins would be an All-Pro every year if the 49ers were in his division.

Where is the pass rush? This was supposed to be the strength of the defense. Here's a hypothetical that may hold some truth - I strongly believe that 4 teams off top of my head would have beat the Vikings tonight. The Chiefs, Eagles, Cleveland and Ravens. Why? Because their defense know how to get to the QB!

    1. AES,
Is it possible that teams have caught up with Koceruk's schemes? The problem with the pass rush didn't start this season it goes back to the final 5 games of last years regular season. It is beginning to look like hiring Wilks over Fangio was a huge mistake. I believe that teams are finally catching up with BP, crowd the middle of the field take away the shallow and mid range crossing routes. Force him to throw outside the numbers. His luck with dropped Ints seems to have run out. If they don't turn things around this Sun with a big win over Cinn it looks like it could be a long season.

  21. I'm wondering if there isn't tension between Wilkes and Kocurek.

    1. Could be.
I think it is more of a factor of these two things:
      1) Wilks getting adjusted to the way our D-line/Lbs play along with his preference for DB coverage
      2) Nick Bosa missing all of Offseason and Training camp. So he is still figuring out how to make Bosa a factor.

Should see marked improvement after the Bye....but will it be too late?

      Delete
  22. Coach,
Two things have became highly visible over the past two games. Stop CMC, and the offense goes into snooze mode. Sadly, the Purdy star seems to be losing a little shine. At the moment, the 49ers look like they would not get past the 1st rd of the playoffs.

Also, can someone remind Bosa that he got PAID and needs to start playing now!

  23. It's time to give Gregory and Givens more snaps and make Wilkes accountable for his awful blitz call with 16 sec left before halftime. As Charles Barkley would say, "that's turrable."

If anything epitomized why the 9ers lost to the Vikings, Wilks made an inexplicable mistake! With no time outs, 16 seconds left before half time, he called a 7 man blitz on 3rd and 6th, with single coverage on 3 receivers, and Warner dropping from the line if TE Hockenson ran a pattern. The ONLY way the Vikings could score points, was Wilks calling a defense that allowed Cousins to hit a 1 on 1 WR Addison for a TD!
After CMC scored a TD, making it Viking 10 -- 9ers 7 and the 9ers going into half time with momentum and getting the ball to start the 3Rd Qtr. Ina=stead, the 9ers went into half time down to the Viking 16 to 9ers 7.
While Wilks was guilty of making an unacceptable mistake, he wasn't the only one to do so. A CMC fumble killed a scoring drive and BP threw 2 late 4th Qtr INT's The 9ers defense got torched for 452 yards and put very little pressure on Cousins. He was NOT saced on 45 pass attempts and the 9er D could NOT get off the field. The Vikings converted on 8 of 13 third downs.
Based on the last two games, the 9ers look less like a SB contender and more like a time that will may not make the playoffs.....

    2. Geep,
As painful as it is I have to agree. The only thing that could possibly change my mind is if the 9ers decimate the Bengals this week. Does anyone think KS has the cajones to make a change at DC in the middle of the season? Maybe at the bye week?

  25. Coach, are there any available candidates that could step in during the season to replace Wilkes? Though I'm not a big fan of Wilkes, the offense seems to have its steam over the last two games. Unable to score 20 pts in these games is a big concern. I'd hate to see a reversal of last year when the 49ers started slow than caught fire.

  29. NOTE TO 9ER GM JOHN LYNCH: 6 DAYS UNTIL TRADE DEADLINE:
    * 9ER DEFENSE GAVE UP 450 AGAINST THE VIKINGS !
The 9er defensive line was absent, getting pressure on QB Cousins on only 16 of his 45 drop backs and didn't record any quarterback sacks!
Cousins completed 14 of 16 attempts for 220 yards, one TD and a 139.6 passer rating. IS THAT A PROBLEM YOU NEED TO ADDRESS?
    * Should YOU call Denver and see if DT D.J. Jones is available? YES!
    * Should YOU call the Vikings to see if DE Danielle Hunter is available, or the Panthers to inquire if DE Brian Burns is available? Burns is likely not available, but you'll never know if you don't inquire?
    * Is RT Colton McKivitz a problem that needs to be addressed? If so,
should you give the Panthers a call, to see if RT Chris Hubbard is available? Hubbard, 32, would be a cheap option and he's been good this season, with a PFF grade of 72.7!
    * After giving up 220 yards to Cousins, should you give the Bears a call to see if 24 Y/O CB Jaylon Johnson is available? He's one of the highest rated corners in football with a PFF score of 85.8 this season.
Maybe throw in CB Ambry Thomas to sweeten the trade?
ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THESE RESULTS JOHN?
Nick Bosa - 72.1 overall grade, 65.2 pass rush (one hit, five hurries)
Randy Gregory - 68.2 overall grade, 66.2 pass rush (one hit, one hurry)
Javon Hargrave - 59.0 overall grade, 71.7 pass rush (two hurries)
Arik Armstead - 56.7 overall grade, 58.9 pass rush (one hit, one hurry)
Kevin Givens - 50.9 overall grade, 75.0 pass rush (one hurry)
Javon Kinlaw - 42.2 overall grade, 64.0 pass rush (one hurry)
Clelin Ferrell - 41.5 overall grade, 55.6 pass rush (one hit)
Gregory was on the field for 21 snaps. Drake Jackson saw only 15.

  31. Back, during TC someone said that we should not be surprised if we see Sam Darnold receive significant playing time. If the OL can't protect Brock, this might very well be the case.

Heading to the trading deadline, my biggest priority has switched from DL now to OL. Purdy’s career may become short-lived if the OL can't block. With Purdy potentially missing time, opposing defenses will focus on CMC. And the way the OL has played, that would present a major issue.

  33. Haven't yet had a chance to watch the game, just caught some highlights. What I will say is that this downturn in level of play should neither be a surprise or major concern at this point in time. 49ers have made a habit of having periods of complacency the past few years. They'll snap out of it.

      Delete
    2. Feels like they do this for a period every year though, doesn't it?

I put it down to letting some complacency in. They've got some pretty cocky guys on the roster, including some of their leaders. They have the talent to back it up, but sometimes they believe their hype a bit too much and forget you don't win in this league consistently putting in 90% effort during the week no matter how talented you are. Gotta be locked in at all times.

But, because they are a very talented squad, when they do lock in they are hard to beat.

      Delete
  34. I agree that complacency could present an issue. Bosa recently said that the game has a way to humble you.
But my concern is how the 49ers have lost the last couple of weeks. Did Cleveland create a blueprint to stop the 49ers offense?
Both losses came by Cleveland and Minnesota keeping Purdy in the pocket and keying on CMC.
I'm interested in seeing whether Cincinnati follows the same defensive pattern. And if they do, can Shanahan make an adjustment.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't think the issue has anything to do with over confidence. I think you can lay blame at the feet of two men and one group. Steve Wilks has taken the #1 defense last year and in the last two games turned them into the worst D in the league. Brock Purdy has been terrible the last two games which may have a little to do with his arm not being 100% and him being rushed back. lastly the O line as a whole has been mediocre .

    ReplyDelete
  36. Scooter / AES
The loss to Cleveland with their defense, I understand. Their front 4
failed to react when the 9er offense tried to create mismatches with motion. they're also as physical as any defense, including the 9ers. When TW went out, the 9er O-Line couldn't physically match up with
their front 4. Other than the 1st drive, the 9ers O couldn’t handle a defense that got penetration against the pass and the run game getting stopped up in the backfield.
IMO, It didn't matter what the motion was when the defense’ goal was to meet where the QB hands off to the RB. The Browns D wasn't following motion, the lineman steps or back flow. They just met in the backfield.
Still, the 9ers were a field goal away from a win. So why didn't the 9ers show up for the Viking game? My concern is NOT that the 9ers were complacent, but that as you said Scooter, the 9ers HAD some pretty cocky guys on the roster, including some of their leaders. Have they lost their confidence after getting owned up by Cleveland? TBD!
If the 9ers fail to show up this week, against Cincinnati, That's on KS
KS, the coaches and player. Then it's time for JL to have a come to Jesus meeting with players getting paid $ Million to win game, NOT lose! Also, coaches that make mistakes that lose games.

I found an interesting fact on the 49ers vs.Vikings win/loss history.
      They have played:
      50 games.
      49ers have a 25-24-1 overall record.
Points for: 49ers: 23.5 per game.
      Points against: 21.6 per game.

I have no ideal as to why these two team's seem to play each on such even basis, but their history certainly proves it out.
If the 49ers lose against the Bengals the way they have lost the last two games, their issues may go deeper than a slump.

      Delete
    2. That is a surprising Fact AES. Vikings have never been that good....maybe it's just the cold and playing in a dome?

With respect to Bengals and long term I think it always comes back to Shanahan.

We are 1-38 in Shanahan era if we are down by 5 points in 4th quarter.
So Blueprint for teams is.... go up by a score in the 4th quarter and Shanahan and this team will most likely choke.

Fred Warner hit the nail on the head....the mental toughness of this group needs to go up, if we have to overcome this.

  39. AES,
I'm not sure how fast an O lineman can be inserted into a starting line. A FA or draftee gets a whole off season and camp to get ready is a week or two enough time. I'm also not sure which side of the ball needs more help. The O wasn't that bad last game it really was BP's interceptions, CMC's fumbles and Moody's missed FG that hindered the O. The D line was terrible all around. imho

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Coach,
It makes sense not to insert a new OL right away. But, I believe that a veteran OLman can eventually work himself into the starting role in a few weeks. My concern surrounds Jaylon Moore. If TW has to miss significant time, I have doubts that Moore can provide a mid-high level of continuity.

The need for better OL play will definitely need to be addressed in the draft and FA next year. But, until then, the 49ers could trade for help this season with the target date of being able to receive significant snaps by mid December.

  40. So what should we expect, assuming Darnold is the 9er QB against Bengals on Sunday?
    * Darnold played well for the Panthers in 2022, and he played well again this preseason for the 49ers. A calendar year of “hey, that's pretty good!”
    * He churned out positive performances in five of the six games he played in Carolina in 2022 and finished with easily his best season in terms of success rate and EPA per dropback, along with a QBR over 50 for the first time in his career. From Weeks 12 through 16 he threw for nearly 8.8 yards per attempt with nine total touchdowns and, most importantly, only three turnovers. And that positive play continued this preseason. The 49ers coaches seemed to like asking Darnold to throw it down the field and he was happy to oblige. He also showed off a comfort level with game plan-specific concept progressions in the red zone.

what will the 49ers be up against this week?
    * Bengals DC, Lou Anarumo, is among the league’s best in week-to-week game planning. He loves to change looks on quarterbacks, especially on 3Rd down. Against Seattle in Week 6, a game against another former NYJ QB. Geno Smith, The Bengals went from a blitz-heavy look, forcing communication between the Seahawks' offensive line, Smith and rookie running back Zach Charbonnet, to a Cover 2 look that can muddy up throwing lanes with arms. That can be especially difficult if the QB doesn't properly anticipate those throwing lanes, punishing tardy QBs who wait that extra half-second to confirm what they’re seeing, even if they are going to the proper spot, with tipped throws and potential interceptions.

  42. Jordan Hicks could be facing a fine for helmet hit on Brock Purdy
    * On Monday night, 9ers QB, Brock Purdy, took a significant blow to the head while running a sneak. The blow to the head happened when he was struck by the helmet of Vikings linebacker Jordan Hicks. The hit from Hicks could result in a fine.
    * The rules prohibit a player from lowering his head and making forcible contact with an opponent. The provision was added in 2018. It has created confusion and controversy as officials attempt to enforce it and players attempt to comply with it.

Hicks wasn't flagged, but that's not a surprise. It often gets missed — especially when the blow is delivered by an offensive player. In this case, the scrum of bodies makes it even harder for officials to notice the lowering of the helmet and/or the making of forcible contact in real time.

There was no necessary need for that just because of the time. I have no problem with that play call, but when it’s that time you can’t do that. That’s not an option."
    Kyle Shanahan.

We know that Shanahan hates turnovers and mistakes. I'm glad that he also has no problem calling out his own coaches mistakes. Wilks made a bad defensive call with 16 sec before halftime and he should be held accountable. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out going forward.

  44. IS BP GOOD TO GO AGAINST THE BENGALS, OR NOT?

Purdy took part in limited practice on Thursday, the team announced. That development appears to put him on pace to be cleared in time to play against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.
Purdy, who first reported concussion symptoms on the team’s flight home from Minnesota, must remain symptom-free in order to receive medical clearance.

“It’s actually real simple for us.” Shanahan told KNBR radio host Tom Tolbert on Thursday afternoon. “I mean, it’s tough in terms that the protocol stretches throughout the whole week, so you never know for sure. “But there’s all these stages they got to go through. If they pass everything and they have no symptoms, then they usually pass and you’re good to go and there are no issues.”

Purdy’s presence on the practice field suggests he is symptom-free and has reached the fourth of five phases in the NFL’s return-to-play protocol.
Before a player can return to full practice participation and game activity, he must make it through the fourth requirement, described as “club-based non-contact training drills.” That includes non-contact football activities and, for Purdy, means throwing. He was seen throwing during individual drills at practice.
