It's Almost The Deadline

Don't miss the deadline, darling. When all your bad dreams will come true. All Hallows Eve is looming and Lynch should be working the phones in an attempt to keep up with the Eagles arms race. Where could the 49ers use help? First thought that comes to mind would be at outside cb. Ward is a nice number 2 and Lenoir is looking like another number 2. Getting a number 1 cb to pair with Ward and moving Lenoir to the slot would be an ideal two in one move. Patrick Surtain would make too much sense.

The next position I would want is a speed rusher. Montez Sweat could probably be had for a 2 and change. Brian Burns would be the big fish and also require a 1st round pick.

I know a lot of people would like a premier OT but they almost never come to market, not to mention theres value in continuity. I don't think they can upgrade with what's available. What position(s) and player(s) would you most want Lynch to target and why?

  1. JL should try to trade for 3Rd year, 24 Y/O Bears CB Jaylon Johnson. After the 2 sides couldn't reach a long-term agreement this offseason, general manager Ryan Poles could decide to move on from Johnson and trade him.
Spotrac lists his 2023 salary at $2,993,000 with a dead cap of $566,140.

    1. Geep,
      Would he be a rental?

    2. OC
Yes, he could be a rental, but he's young and depending how well he played, and what it would cost the 9ers to resign him, they could sign him to a multi year contract?

  2. If they could get Surtain for a 1st and Sweat for a 2nd I would pull the trigger on both trades. Sweat would be a rental so he might come cheaper than a 2nd maybe a 3 or two 3s. The only problem I see with trading away next years high picks is how do they replace Williams next year.

    1. Good point but I think they need to be all in for this year and worry about next when it gets here.

While I agree, Surtain is a CB I'd be excited about trading for. But Denver has said Surtain is NOT going to be traded, so I doubt JL
has a chance of Denver trading him? Even if Denver did decide
to trade him, I believe there would be several teams bidding for him and would take more than a 2024 first Rd pick

  3. 27 Y/O, 4th year Panthers Donte Jackson, is a another CB JL could trade for. The 9ers have developed a history as a trade partners, last season, their big addition was Christian McCaffrey, but they also traded for kicker Zane Gonzalez this spring.
Joe Person of The Athletic reported that the Panthers have reached out to teams to gauge interest in Donte Jackson, it's something that should pique the interest of Niners fans.
Jackson has struggled with injuries throughout his career, but when healthy he has shown the ability to be an asset in coverage.
Spotrac 2023 Jackson salary: $1,080,000 base, ~$4 Mil signing
    bonus
Spotrac 2024 salary: $4,722,500, base ~$4 Mil signing bonus.

  4. Mitchell and a 7th round pick for Dalvin Cook.

  5. I'm still leaning towards an Olineman. We could use help now, and need to plan for the not to distant retirement of Trent Williams.

I like two OL players who could bring better stability after a few weeks of assimilation of Shanahan's offense.
    Garrett Bolles - Denver
    Michael Onwenu - Patriots.
Both players rate high and could become mainstays even after TW retires (in two-three years).

Correct me if I'm wrong. I don't think Bolls has played RT?
Doesn't mean he can't, but would be a wast of draft picks if
9ers traded for him and he couldn't beat out McKivitz...
The 2024 draft is deep with OTs like Alabama OT JC Latham, listed as a mid 1st round draft pick the 9ers could trade up for, or Oregon St.OT Taliese Fuaga, listed as a late 1st Rd draft pick.

  6. I agree, that there will be some talented Oline players in next year's draft. But there also is no guarantee that the 49ers will be in position to draft the blue-chip players available. I believe that the number one priority is to protect Purdy. And that begins with the Oline. The more opposing Dcords try to keep Purdy in the pocket, pass protection becomes of vital importance. I am not encouraged by the current backup OL players, which leads me to believe the 49ers could use some help at the position.
It will be interesting to see what trade move they make.

  7. I think the biggest need is a speed rusher. This will drastically improve the secondary. All in for a 2nd speed rusher opposite Bosa!

How many draft picks, and what rounds, would you expect the 9ers to give the Panthers to trade for Panthers WLB Brian Burns?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Mugee,
Who would you rather have Burns or Sweat?

    ReplyDelete
  10. GEEP and OLD COACH,

I think getting Burns would be amazing and would take a 1st and a 3rd. Since he is a UFA next year, the Panthers might just be tempted with a 1st and a 3rd. Well worth it in my opinion and will be better than Sweat.....but doing either trade will be incriminating Wilks.

Imagine a D-Line having Captain Armstead, Bosa, Hargrave, Kinlaw, Ferrell and Gregory and we go for another premium D-Line upgrade? All of these are either 1st, 2nd or 3rd round picks.

This will not make Wilks look good....sceptics will ask what is the Guarantee that Wilks will not make Burns regress?

Here is a (Fictitious) conversation between Jed York and Kyle Shanahan:

KS: Jed, we have an incredible player called Brian Burns who will upgrade our D-Line. He is a Difference-maker.
JY: Didn't you say the exact same thing with Javon Hargrave and make me shell out $81 M?
KS: Yes, but this guy is the missing piece. Remember last year's CMC trade? We are doing a similar trade with the same team, but only on Defense.
JY: GTFOH. Fix the offense first. We don't compete here for Divisional Championships....we compete here for Superbowls.
KS: But the Regression is due Wilks...he knows he messed up.
    JY: Who hired him?
    KS: John
    JY: (Sigh) Dude!!??

I have to agree with your "Fictitious conversation between Jed York and Kyle Shanahan." IMO, hiring Wilks was a mistake, but
unless KS and JL are willing to fire Wilks mid season, we're stuck with him! I don't see them making that mistake next season, short of the defense being responsible for 9er winning the SB.
Nor sure how much I agree with OC, that Koceruk " needs to take some of the responsibility for the lack of pass rush."
Bosa, Hargrave and Armstead are all getting paid $millions and
IMO, they think they've won the SB already. As professionals, they shouldn't need Koceruk to motivate them! On the other
hand, maybe a good swift kick in the Butt would wake them up?

    2. I agree 100% GEEP.

Players need to execute. I think after the Cowboys game our guys thought they won the Superbowl when the cowboys are not even the best team in their own division.

I will never hype up this team, unless they beat Philly in Philly. That is the first test. 2nd Test is Chiefs. We have been undressed every time we play them.

Wrt Wilks, I think he is here to stay. While I think Flores would have been a better hire, the D is still Top10 in most categories. We just need to play complementary football with O and ST. After the bye I truly think the Defense will be better and closer to Elite.

  11. Now I am no fan of Wilks but I believe that Koceruk needs to take some of the responsibility for the lack of pass rush. It didn't start this season it began with about 4 or 5 games left in the 2022 regular season. There sacks dropped off precipitously at the end of last year. I wonder if the league hasn't caught up with the wide 9. This last off season I really wanted the 9ers to hire Fangio the main reason they didn't was they would lose Koceruk, at this point in time I believe that hiring Fangio instead of Wilks and letting Koceruk go would have been the better decision. imho

  13. NFL Week 8: 49ers VS Bengals matchups to watch:
    * Coming off a 2 game losing streak, the 9ers were facing the possibility of QB Purdy, WR Deebo and RT T Williams being out due
to injuries. However, Purdy is now set to pass protocol this weekend and start on Sunday!
    * The Bengals offense will try to spread out the 9er defense and complete passes from QB Burrows to their #1 WR Ja'Marr Chase
And #2 WR Tee Higgins. Ja'Marr Chase has collected 50 catches this season and his team-high yardage total sits at 556 (92.7 yards per game). He's been targeted 73 times and has three TDs .
To win, the 9er D-line will need to:
    A) Keep pressure on Bengals QB Burrows
    B) 9er DBs must keep WR Ja'Marr chase from making big plays, limit him to less than 100 yards receiving and keep him out of the end zone.
    c) The defense needs to shut down RB Joe Mixon, keep him out of the end zone and make the Bengals one dimensional

To win, the 9er offensive line must:
    A) Keep pressure off the QB, especially the 9er OT's Moore and
McKivitz! Bengals DE Trey Hendrickson is on another Pro Bowl path this season. His team-leading 7 sacks are tied for 4th most in the NFL.
    B) The O-Line must open lanes for CMC to run thru. I expect the Bengals to copy the Vikings and use 6 D-lineman and force the
9ers QB to pass. The 2023 Bengals defense ranks 3rd against the
run. NT D.J. Reader and DT B.J. Hill are both difficult to run against.
    C) Can the 9er O-Line match up? If not, the 9ers may find themselves
on a 3 game losing streak, going into their bye week
    D) With Deebo out and CMC up against a strong run defense, Kittle,
Aiyuk and Jennings will need to step up against the Bengals 3rd ranked pass defense.

MATCHUPS THAT WILL DETERMINE WHO WINS THE GAME:
    1. Nick Bosa vs. Orlando Brown Jr: It's time for Nick Bosa to earn the check that makes him the highest-paid non QB in the NFL.
    2. Charvarius Ward vs. Ja'Marr Chase: IMO the 9ers need to double
up on WR Chase, so it's not all on Ward to control him.
    3) 3. LT Jaylon Moore vs. DE Trey Hendrickson: I suspect that Hendrickson will also test McKivitz and could be a long day for
    the 9er QB.
    4) Brandon Aiyuk vs. RCB Cam Taylor-Britt.
    5. Jauan Jennings vs. DB Mike Hilton or LCB Chidobe Awuzie
    6) George Kittle VS LB Logan Wilson: I look for Kittle to have a big day
    7) Kyle Juszczy VS SS Nick Scott: KS uses Juice for a couple of surprise plays.
    9ERS 24 VS Bengals 20

    1. Geep,
After reading your synopsis and before reading your prediction, I would have guessed that you were picking the Bengals by 7. So I was surprised to see you picking the 9ers by 4. I agree with most if not all of your points so I am for the 3rd straight week predicting a close loss for the 9ers

Most of my post was written before today. Today's 9er news is
BP will play on Sunday, thus my prediction that the 9ers win. Because I think KS knows the 9ers are a MUST WIN this week and he trusts BP enough to open up the play book and break the 9er offensive tendencies. I look for KS to be an offensive mad scientist against the Bengals....
Should be fun to see if in fact he does?

  14. I'll be interested in what Wilks brings to the table tomorrow. Will he play more conservative or will he continue on his gambling ill-timed calls. After Shanahan's somewhat passive criticism of Wilks' Zero Blitz call before halftime last Monday, Wilks might feel the need to walk on egg shells.

    * The first thing I'll look for, against the Bengals, is the INTENSITY of the 9er defense. It's been missing the last 2 games and they've lost.
    * The second thing I'll look for is the 9er tackling. The defense has ranked among the NFL’s top 2 in run defense in each of the past two seasons and hasn’t finished outside the top 10 since 2018. It's now ranked No. 23 in expected points added (EPA) per play against the run. The 49ers have fared even worse against designed runs, ranking No. 25 in EPA/play when quarterback scrambles are discounted.
    * The 9ers play an aggressive, penetrating Wide 9 technique along the defensive line. The Browns showed the NFL how to defeat the 9er defense. They outfoxed the 9er D with screens and traps, that Wilks had no answer for.
    * The Vikings focused on a quick passing game to lessen damage from the 49ers’ pass rush. They run the ball to establish a threat that opened the space necessary for Cousins to complete 7 passes to his
rookie WR Jordan Addison, for 124 yards and 2 TDs.
    * Cousins completed 35 of 45 passes for 378 YDS yards, 8.4 YPA and
    a 107.2 RTG.
    * If the 9er defense can't stop the run, the 9ers will go into the bye with
3 stright losses. The question is, can Wilks figure out how to fix the
    defense?

    1. GEEP,
I hate the deep drop-off on the once stout 49ers defense. The one thing that has been a constant over the last few years for the defense is relentless QB pressure. That is sorely missing over the last 7 games. If they can't put pressure on JB today, it's going to make for a rough day.
Question: If the 49ers lose today, do they deserve the ugly "pretender" label?
