The Bosa Constrictor

Nick Bosa has agreed to a five-year, $170 million extension with the San Francisco 49ers, including $122.5 million guaranteed, by a wide margin. It will make him the highest-paid defensive player in history.

  1. I would hope the 9ers hold Bosa out for the first 2 games and give him time to get into football shape.
Why risk a soft tissue injury that could affect his play for much, if not all, of the season? Even without Bosa, that should leave the 9ers with a 3W – 1L record and a healthy Bosa, going into the Dallas game.

    1. I think we'll beat Pittsburgh with or without him.

  2. Glad that negotiations did not drag into the weekend. Sounds like Kyle is ready to play Bosa at Pittsburgh. I suspect they will restrict snap count.

Think we'll have to wait to hear two very details that are generally very important to the Niners:
    1. How long before they can get out of the contract, which leads to the second detail,
    2. How much of the $122M is guaranteed at signing (i.e., $50M and how much more has to be out in escrow right away -- important from a business cash flow viewpoint).

  3. A lot of money, but he's that good.

49ers wave of salary cap will catch up to them at some point, so need to make the next few seasons count.

    1. They may have to make a choice between Deebo and Aiyuk next off-season.

    2. We know Kittle will be here for sure in 2024. Colletto will probably take over for Juice, and Jennings will be gone. I expect they'll sign Aiyuk and Huff won't cost too much given his position. Staggered restructuring is how they can manage this along with Purdy's cheap cap hit.

  5. Really want to see the yearly cap hits. Why convert salary to signing bonus for Williams and Kittle - was it to front load Bosa's deal, or do they have something else in mind?

  7. The Niners have the most cap space in the NFL - 41.5 million.

    1. Rolling that over to next August for Aiyuk and Huff.

    2. If Purdy is the QB of the future, they will have to deal with him in when his contract expires.

    3. The decisions to restructure now just to rollover cap to next year makes me think they are now very much looking at a 2-3 year window, then retool.
This means they can have a much higher cap next year, which with further restructuring gives them the ability to retain and add players for an "all-in" year or two.

But after that.... well, at some point you have to pay the piper.

    4. We have now paid big money to Armstead, Hargrave and Bosa on the D-line. So no more big contracts on the D-line. This means that Javon Kinlaw is not getting paid next year (which is expected) and the FO better pray that Drake Jackson or Robert Beal become a starter.

If Ronnie Bell emerges, I won't be surprised if we either FT Aiyuk or let him go sign elsewhere. Gotta extend Huff though (who won't cost as much).

    5. I actually disagree Mugeek. I think these moves increase the chances of them keeping Aiyuk. I think what we have is 2 maybe 3 more years with the core group, after which Williams, Armstead, Kittle, Ward and Juice will be gone, probably Deebo and CMC too.

The rebuild will be around the remaining core of Purdy, Bosa, Warner and Aiyuk.

  8. Hey folks, as you've no doubt noticed, I have not been posting articles much over the past few months. Work has been kicking my butt - very busy atm. I had assumed it would slow down by now but it hasn't. Also some other things going on which hasn't helped time-wise.

As a result I won't be in a position to be posting articles regularly for a little while yet. Hopefully things will change in the near future!

In the interim I will keep commenting here and there when I have time.
