George:
ReplyDeleteI've heard good things about Wilks, including that his defensive style fits the kind of players we have.
Will he be as good as Ryans? If he can be, he's a better hire. We were able to hold onto Kocurek who's an elite DL coach. Johnny Holland remains in place heading up our Penn St. LBU, and Wilkes is an elite DB coach, killing two birds with one hire after Undlin's contract expiration.
DeleteThe players will play for this guy. I am sure there will be some subtle changes to the defense much like what Ryans did when he was hired to replace Saleh. My problem with this hire is that he could easily be hired away next year which leaves the position much like a revolving door.
ReplyDeleteGeorge:
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the press conference.
Good hire. I wasn't impressed with the internal options so had to look outside the organisation. Fangio would have been a safe choice, but I think Wilks is a better fit.
ReplyDeleteYes, it comes with the risk of losing him as a HC in the coming years. But tbh, I think Shanahan wants guys with those aspirations.
Now they need to bring in one or two guys they can groom as well.
With the anticipated departure of Al-Shaair, Shaq Thompson anyone?
DeleteRzaor
DeleteShaq Thompson's a pillar of the Panthers locker room, but his 2023 salary would be the sixth highest among all NFL off-ball linebackers.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/shaq-thompson-16749/
While the 49ers can free up cap space pretty easily, I would prefer they be a little wiser where they spend it than the 3rd LB.
DeleteCory Littleton, with a little, Ioannidis on the side?
DeleteTbh, I wouldn't be surprised if they de-prioritise the 3rd LB. Wilks tends to favour 5 DBs. What they do/ who they bring in at nickel should be very interesting this offseason.
DeleteIoannidis was on pretty big money with the Panthers. If he wants/ expects near that again it is a hard no for me, but if he can be had for about half what he was on then I'd be alright with it.
DeleteActually, looking at his 2022 contract further, it looks like the contract he signed for 2022 was less than I initially thought - $5.9M and not the $9.5M Spotrac suggests (I suspect they got the 5 and 9 the wrong way around in the text). At around $5M I'm fine with Ioannidis.
DeleteLove to get Payne but they won't be able to afford him.
DeleteAnother Free agent LB doesn't make sense IMHO, cap allocation wise. It will be like going after Saquan Barkely when we already have CMC and Mason.
DeleteAs far as LBs go, I also don't think we might be able to hold onto Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (who is RFA). But we do have Marcello McCrary-Ball who should be able to slide right in to the roster, and then draft/develop one mid-round pick+UDFA.
Wilks is a great hire. Shows Shanahan's growth in bringing a former HC into his staff.
George:
DeleteMugeek, regarding our rbs I see you don't list Mitchell, I assume by design because of his injury history. Anyway that's what my take is on him and think it will be interesting what they decide to do with him.
That's right George.
DeleteAlthough Mitchell is extremely talented, unfortunately the young man seems to always lose a third of the season to injuries. Hope he gets better luck this year, but until he can stay healthy, good front offices should account for his unavailability.
I second Scooter.....Good hire.
ReplyDelete* Great DC but never thought Fangio was a good fit, glad he's with Miami.
Matt Barrows of the Athletic reported Kocurek was with Wilks for part of the interview to ensure the DL coach and potential new coordinator got along personally and with their football philosophies.
ReplyDeleteAll ships must sail in the same direction.
DeleteI really believe he will be better than Ryans and a great fit- reason being, he will develop the back end and I think will be a bit more aggressive- I wonder if they can bring Boyer in in some capacity as I think they have the LB's and DB's to facilitate a more aggressive D/scheme that permits more blitzing.

5th-year option price tags would be..
Brandon Aiyuk: $14.1 million
Javon Kinlaw: $10.4 million
Pay Aiyuk and let Kinlaw walk.
DeleteKinlaw is on the same path as McGlinchey.
DeleteHow so, razor? 49ers picked up McGlinchey's 5th year. They shouldn't with Kinlaw. Heck, if they could save money by releasing him I'd be tempted to.
DeleteI thought they didn't pick up Mike's 5th year. My bad.

Can confirm
@RapSheet
's report that Brock Purdy will have right elbow ligament repaired Feb. 22. The team has discussed a 6-month timeframe for Purdy to be full go, which would be just as the preseason is ending. Team/Purdy will have a better idea of timeframe after the surgery.
Step 1: The 9ers have decided on new DC (Steve Wilks).
ReplyDeleteStep 2: 9ers decide which of their free agents to resign
Step 3: Evaluate 319 draft prospects attending NFL 2023 combine (February 28 through March 6)
* https://www.nfl.com/news/2023-nfl-scouting-combine-invited-prospects-in-alphabetical-order
.
PRE COMBINE: First look 9er 2023 3Rd round draft prospects:
ReplyDelete* EDGE: Zach Harrison, Ohio ST. (move up to late 2nd Rd
* C John Michael, Minnesota (move up to late 2nd Rd)
* C Steve Avila, TCU
* OT Blake Freeland, BYU
* S Rashad Terrence, Florida
* DT Mazi Smith, Michigan
The big unknown is what the surgeon determines is best once he opens Purdy up. He has the authority to audible into a hybrid type surgery, which would essentially shut him down for the year.
ReplyDeleteThat's got to be pretty rare though. We'll just have to wait and see, and hope it all goes well.
DeleteYea, let's hope for the best.
DeleteThe Doc will repair Brock as he sees fit. Good plan.
DeleteYannick Ngakoue is the kind of insurance against Jackson the 49ers need, but can they afford $15 million? The Commanders, Payne is another addition they should sign but he's likely out of reach at $20 million.
ReplyDeletePayne would be lovely, but as you say, he could get around the $20M per annum mark.
DeleteDalvin Tomlinson would be a very nice addition at what would likely be a lot less than Payne, though he'll still likely get low teens per annum so likely too expensive.
The guy I would go after is Sheldon Rankins. Rasheem Green at edge could be interesting too.
A'Shawn Robinson is also an option.

ReplyDeleteHow about NO Saints F/A DT Shy Tuttle? NO tendered him a RFA, one year $2,433,000 and right of first refusal. Tuttle was NO 2nd best DT behind David Onyemata. IMO Tuttle is a player Kocurek could
mold into a solid starter.
Offer him a 2 yr. $6 Mil with a $1 Mil signing bonus and see how bad NO wants to keep him?
I'm liking this kid, Gervon Dexter, 320 pound DT out of Florida with a modest move up in round 3 under, Kocurek and next to Armstead.
DeleteRazor
DeleteRE Gervon Dexter
Like you, I like him. But he's listed mid second rd (or higher)!
Trade value chart = ~500 to 450 point! All 3 of the 9ers 3rd rd draft picks is still not enough.
Note: CBS / NFL has him at draft pick # 44
I could see him moving up into the lower half of round 2 after testing well at the combine, but 44th seems pretty high for mine.
DeleteIf he does go that high I'd target, Adetomiwa Adebawore in round 3.

ReplyDeleteGood attitude.
As far as I know the Niners have not made an official announcement about the Wilkes hiring. Probably waiting till after the Super Bowl.
