NFC Championship Game: San Francisco 49ers vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the live blog for the 49ers NFC Championship game. Looks like the game plan defensively should be to flush and contain Hurts. His numbers drop 50% when forced out of the pocket to a 37% completion rate, 4.2 ypa, 52.5 qb rating. If they can flush him out, while not giving up running lanes, that could put a wrench in their offense. Hurts' under pressure accuracy rating (5.3) 31st and pressured catchable pass rate (52%) 29th. In 2022, against designed quarterback runs or quarterback option runs: the 49ers defense ranks 1st in ypa allowed at 2.6. The Eagles used shotgun formation 90.4% of the time in the regular season, the highest in the NFL. San Francisco ranked 2nd in defensive DVOA (-12.5%) against shotgun this season. Should be a cracking good game. I have the 49ers coming out on top, 24-20. Let's go Niners!

Inactives: QB Jimmy Garoppolo CB Ambry Thomas OL Nick Zakelj DE Drake Jackson TE Ross Dwelley RB Ty Davis-Price RB Elijah Mitchell

The #49ers’ defense is No. 1 in yards per attempt allowed at 2.6.

  1. Lets Go Niners! We have been before and today the Niner and Purdy will make history!

  2. Niners' D will have to somehow contain the Eagles' offense in the first half. The second half will belong to the Niners.

  3. Niners are 15-0 when they win or draw the turnover battle -- 0-4 when they lose.

    1. I love him but you're right. Coleman is fresh. CMC doesn't seem more than 80%. I wonder if Mason gets some carries, and if the passing game is a bit more emphasized.

    2. First play roll Purdy to his right hit Kittle in the flat. Second play different formation same play. Two easy passes to get the jitters out.

      Delete
    3. A heavy dose of Mason in the fourth quarter to close out the game,,,

  6. As has been pointed out elsewhere, Eagles have the best pass defense in the NFL when not facing pre snap motion. When they do face pre-snap motion, the Eagles pass defense is ranked 22nd. Niners are top 5 in pre-snap motion usage.

  10. Dang! We are snake-bitten aren't we.

Fingers-crossed that the kid is alright. Prayers up! Defense is keeping us in the game here after the 1st series. We got this if we can get competent QB play!

  18. Frustrating that the 49ers aren't up 7-0. Tbh, I partly blame Huff for it - he was in the best position to let the coaches know it wasn't a catch.

With this Kyle's track record at QBs I won't be surprised if we have 3 QBs - Brock, Trey and.....another vet (Jimmy!!??) next season.

Nice season, but it has come to an end. So long.

  32. Getting sick of the Fox crew continually talking about how the penalties are hurting the 49ers without mentioning how many have been pretty bad calls and how many Eagles penalties haven't been called. I guess they must have gotten the same memo as the refs from league offices.

  33. I know that the 49ers had bad luck, but the decision making by the coaches hasn't helped. Why have an allout block attempt at that point in the game? There was still time to score 14 points. But now with a 21 pt. difference in the 4th quarter.....

    2. KS' inattention to the offensive line has resulted in 4 QBs getting hurt, imo. When have you ever in your entire life seen that happen. Further, he does not seem to be able to coach well in the really big games. Maybe he gets the team prepared, but does he seem prepared. Finally, when Jimmy G. got hurt, was JJ really, really the best backup QB that he could find. C'mon man.

    10. Cubus, I get that you're upset about the 49ers losing. But imo you're letting your frustration cloud your judgement.

The reason the 49ers lost this game wasn't Shanahan. He is, however, a big reason they got this far.

Sometimes bad luck costs you games. It did today.

      Delete
    11. Scooter. As I said he has some elite traits, but some major flaws as well. He seems to make obvious strategic mistakes as JJ Watt noted. Further, given that 2 QBs went down before, wasn't it really a major priority to get a better backup than JJ? If you want to get to the top, you can't make these avoidable errors, imo. He's a good coach overall, but I don't think he will lead us to the promised land.

      Delete
    12. Cubus,
Apparently that was a play-action call. Purdy was supposed to step up in the pocket and make the throw. Purdy has had issues stepping up into the pocket.

    14. Cubus, all coaches will make some mistakes. In hindsight it is easy to say having the #2 TE out there blocking Reddick was a mistake given the outcome. But if Kroft doesn't whiff completely, or Purdy slides a little to his left or up, maybe its a big play for the 49ers instead. Eagles have a host of excellent pass rushers - hard to have extra guys on all of them.

As for JJ, seriously, when JG went down who should they have signed that would have made the difference today? Be reasonable .

As I've said, KS is a very good overall coach, but his flaws will keep the 49ers from winning it all. Eventually, maybe he'll get there. He's kind of like the Dusty Baker of football. Participation trophies shouldn't be the end goal.

      Delete
    24. Its not a personal attack when its in response to your post of your opinion.

If you don't like pushback on your takes, don't make them in a public forum.

I never post on that blog, its been dead since Gnat left for SI.

Kyle made mistakes, sure, the challenge should have been thrown, even if it blows a timeout because you could see Phili trying to hurry up. Even if its just a time out you give your defense time to recover, regroup and maybe hold them to 3. We all know now that they would have won the challenge and got the ball (not even a punt) and that would have been a big swing, who knows if Purdy would have even been injured at that point.

However to blame kyle for Purdy being hurt, no, Kroft needs to do his job. Everyone calls out McG for his 1 or 2 bad plays a game but when Kroft does a crap block its Kyles fault? No, its the fault of the guy who's supposed to block the defender. Dude got beat, but there have been plenty of plays where he wins those matchups. Brock being hurt is just a bad break, just like Jimmys foot, just like Trey's ankle, and just like JJs concussion (not that it would have mattered much at that point anyway). All those injuries are freak, watch enough football and you see QBs getting hit throwing the ball the same way Brock was and they don't get injured. Seen plenty of Qbs, WRs, and RBs tackled the same as Jimmy w/o the broken foot (Mahomes for example last week). Seen plenty of QBs, RBs and WRs getting tackled over the middle and not getting their ankle broke during the tackle. These are freak injuries and just so happens the Niners just were the recipients.

Besides the missed challenge and fluke injury theres not much else you can even try to throw at Kyle. Was it on him that the refs seemed to call a 1 sided game (plenty of missed opportunities to call holding against that eagles o-line)? Was it his fault that a 13 year vet can't handle a shotgun snap and instead of just falling on it he trys to pick it up off the bounce? The team, even after Purdy went out, was in the game...but extended drives (refs) and a costly turnover are what did them in.

Its great that Hammer calls him out, thats his opinion but doesn't make him right, nor does it make him wrong. Opinions on things you can't scientifically prove are incapable of being wrong or right, they just are. You agree with Hammer, thats great, his opinion is no more valid than anyone else and there are plenty of us who don't see it the way you guys do.

"It’s easy to point to the ineptitude of the offense under Johnson to absolve Kyle Shanahan of the loss. However, looking at why Johnson was in the game to begin with points directly back to a head coach who made three mistakes in the first half which cost his team."

  45. I'm not one for conspiracies but when you look at the SB matchup and how the league is marketing it...Kelce vs Kelce, Reid vs his old team, first 2 "black" qb SB...heck they might even play up the "top 2 MVP candidates" meeting.

Now the Niners having to go to QB 4 and 5 didn't help, and JJ dropping a snap and giving up the ball just put the nail in the coffin at that point, but when you see drives get extended with the most tickiest of takcy calls you know something just isnt quite right.

Have to say, NFL definitely needs to implement the NCAA rule where a replay official in the booth can issue a challenged on ANY play, making it so the coaches need to call for a stop and are penalized is such a backwards system. NCAA system works perfect and maybe 1 or 2 plays are actually reviewed per game and is not the reason NCAA games take 4+ hours (thats because of the stopping of the clock after every 1st down). NFL needs to make that change so that 4th down yesterday doesn't hold up.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The least of my concerns doomed this game from the beginning. Coaching

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep. I remember reading in one of the blog posts that the 49ers had the edge in coaching. The most annoying thing to me was that he didn't throw the flag. Jack is stating (and Scooter alluded to) that Hufanga actually waived off the play as an incompletion. KS should have then thrown the red flag, particularly, because it was a 4th down play, that if overturned, would have prevented any attempt by the Eagles to score and given the 49ers decent field position. The immediate reward of the play being overturned would have been greater for this 4th down play than a 3rd down play and I would argue really should have been an automatic reaction (to throw the flag).

      Delete
    2. Kyles only true blame can be for not just throwing the flag on that 4th down. Even if they lose a time out it allows the defense to recover and refocus.

Everything else is just football and thems the breaks.

      Delete
    3. Not throwing that flag was a rookie unforced error, and it shaped the momentum for the Eagles.

      Delete
    4. Defenders wave off plays as incomplete all the time, even when they are, so can't blame a coach for not throwing a flag on that alone. Hufanga should have been more adamant in telling the sideline to throw the flag. Assuming he saw the ball wasn't caught, which he was the person that had the best view to make that call.

But even so Shanahan should have thrown the flag in that situation if he thought it might not have been a catch. It was a big moment - possible 4th down stop vs big play into the red zone. But... here's the thing... at the time it looked like a catch. The replay angles they showed prior to the Eagles snapping the ball all seemed to show insufficient separation from the hand through contacting the ground to overturn. Really the only thing that was really giving off signals was DeVonta Smith himself wanting to hurry up and snap the ball. Tough one that is easy to criticise in hindsight.

      Delete
    5. Shanny said he didn't want to waste a timeout. 1st half timeouts aren't worth nearly as much as 2nd half timeouts. You always throw the flag in that situation.

      Delete
    6. Only if you credibly believe he didn't catch it and that replays can prove it. Again, this is why I put some of the blame on Hufanga.

      Delete
    7. Scooter, there's no downside to throwing the flag in that situation. 2nd half, sure you could make that argument.

      Delete
    8. Contrast KS' no throw with Sirianni's red flag as soon as the defender appeared to drop what was an apparent interception but in fact turned out to be a fumble, which the replay confirmed. It's the playoffs, you take that chance because it's win or go home. KS had enough signals plus the high reward of a potential turnover to the 49ers and loss of scoring opportunity by the Eagles, because it was 4th down. Should have been an automatic response, imo, based on the situation (playoffs, 4th down).

      Delete
  47. People blaming Shanahan for Purdy getting hurt should go look at Joe Thomas' tweets on the subject.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I read the tweets. I would counter with: it's unreasonable to expect a "rookie" QB to have the kind of experience that Thomas says is required. Therefore, the coaching staff needs to help the "rookie" who already has a tremendous amount on his plate and has done quite well with most of it. It was the coaching staff's job to put BP in a position to win despite BP's flaws. If you know he has a flaw (in this case unconsciously moving up in the pocket as he is processing hundreds of other inputs) then you need to account for it. But it seems like KS rarely does that.

      Delete
    2. It's funny, if Kroft does anything at all to slow Reddick down on that play you're probably singing his praises for a well designed play.

They got to the NFCCG precisely because Shanahan trusted the team to execute, including Purdy. But come the biggest game you want him to change?

      Delete
    3. Not really. I've been critical of KS before. Using Lance as a battering ram, for example. And how many times during the regular season have posters (including myself) stated on this blog that they hoped that KS does not run CMac into the ground. How many times have we pleaded with KS to pull players at the end of a game, when it was well in hand, to minimize injury (because injuries are a big problem for this team). The incident with Purdy is just part of the general trend. As Mugeek9er says below: knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your players and game planning for that ...... that is 100% the head coach's job.

This is not a new concept. While not exactly the same, do you throw rookie consultants in front of your major clients right when they join the firm? As they get more experienced, don't you have a senior consultant at the rookie's side if they are presenting to the client. And then when the rookie is a senior consultant, they can be on their own. It's all part of the development process and, imo, applies generally to football just as it does for successful career development.

      Delete
    4. Purdy had shown he could handle the playbook. He was playing exceptionally well. Why all of a sudden decide he can't run the offense?

There wasn't a whole lot wrong with the play call or design. They run similar plays all the time. Reddick just made a really good play in this instance. It happens.

Only if you think Shanahan should have gone out and played ultra conservatively would you think that was a bad play call. I guarantee you they lose if they play ultra conservatively. You have to take your shots against really good teams.

As for Lance, I agree running him up the middle three times in a quarter wasn't Shanahan's greatest moment. Have said so previously. But... I have to admit the Eagles wouldn't be in the Super Bowl if they didn't let Hurts play that style of football, and the Bills wouldn't be perennial threats if they didn't use Allen's power running game either. I don't like it... but maybe that is just the risk you need to take with those types of QBs.

      Delete
    5. Yes, but to expect a rookie, even as advanced as Purdy is, to have the same experience as Rodgers, Brady, etc. as Joe Thomas seems to expect is absurd. But then again, what should one expect from a former OL. Watt's tweet is much more on point in my opinion.

      Delete
    6. Lol! Of course you do. But think about it - you are saying the guy that was in all the offensive meetings and lived and breathed offense knows less than the defensive player about the scheme. Ballsy.

And before you start listing how great a player JJ Watt is, remember that Thomas is a 6 time first team All-Pro and 2 time second team All-Pro, that also happens to have played in this scheme. He knows a thing or two.

      Delete
    7. LOL right back at you Scooter. That's an absurd take. Let's not let anyone develop but just expect seasoned skills and abilities without education or experience.

      Delete
    8. Please explain how me listening to Joe Thomas is absurd.

As for expecting Purdy to be able to execute, I have already answered that. Purdy's level of play is what allowed Shanahan to keep his playbook open in the 7 prior victories.

      Delete
    9. I didn't say that your listening to Joe Thomas is absurd. I think your take, if I understand it correctly, that Purdy should be expected to execute as well as Brady or Rodgers under an incessant pass rush is absurd. It's the situation that is important. The Eagles have the best pass rush and have four DL with double digit sacks. What I'm arguing is that KS should have protected him better in this specific situation. I'm arguing that not all games and situations are equivalent. You need to adjust to give your team the best chance to win. That's all I have to say. I can agree to disagree.

    10. Cubus, that is a strawman argument. I've not said he needs to be Brady or Rodgers to operate Shanahan's scheme. You have.

I understand your position, but I disagree they should then change the way they play substantially to address it.

Think about it - what you are saying is they should basically have removed any play action from their playbook. Those are longer developing plays that require the protection to hold up and the QB to be aware of where pressure is coming from. If you want to protect your QB those plays are gone. They do that then the offense becomes highly predictable and doesn't take advantage of the threat of their run game which the offense is built around. Surely you only do that after the offense has proven it can't hold up against the opponent rather than just chuck it out from the get go, right?

Alternatively, if you think they should have changed their blocking scheme to account for Reddick, then two things - as Joe Thomas points out that would fundamentally change the scheme and would thereby be easy to diagnose, and you would just be leaving one of their other great pass rushers with an easier matchup.

So yes, I can agree you want to adjust to your opponent, but don't go into the biggest game of the year fundamentally changing your identity and offense out of fear, especially when that identity has predominantly been successful all year to that point.

    11. They could have started off with quick strike passes to gauge the pass rush and the ability of our OL to hold up. This is the top rushing defense in the NFL, ffs with four monster rushers.

Ultimately the results vindicate or repudiate the method/process. Sometimes luck plays a part but he is the head coach and the buck stops with him.

      Delete
    12. They kind of did. First two passes were exactly that. They also had three runs. The sixth play was their shot play on 2nd and 6 and in hindsight I am sure Shanahan would love to have it back. But imo there really wasn't anything egregious in the play calling.

  48. I've had some time to think things over and my conclusion is that Injuries happen and the coach should not be blamed.

But inherently, I believe the system that Shanahan runs is NOT QB friendly. I'm talking about the concepts like the Naked Bootlegs and even the play action bootlegs. The probability of getting injured is higher in this system.

Case in point...look at the same system being implemented in Miami Dolphins and NY Jets. Dolphins have had 3 QBs, Tua has 3 serious injuries in one year and I won't be surprised if he stops playing football at some point. NJ too has gone through 3 QBs this year, while implementing the same system.

Shanahan should not be blamed for QB injuries, but knowing the strength and weaknesses of your players and game planning for that...that is 100% the head coach's job.

This has been one heck of a season and Shanahan gets major props for that, but yesterday he wasn't a good coach. He needs introspect/be accountable and that is the only way he can grow and get a superbowl in his lifetime.

Also, trust your players and don't be tied too much to your system. The great coaches have great systems but also tweak it to magnify or camouflage their players strength/weaknesses.

So there you go...to summarize, introspection and increased Trust in the players. Not bad new year resolutions for the coach. :)

He is still a young coach, who has surrounded himself with smart ppl and he has grown incrementally every year.

Plus I'm the biggest Trey Lance supporter, but also think Purdy is special. So our QBs are upgraded.

Crazy to say it out loud, but at this moment, I would say no other team has it as good as us and We will be back! :)

    2. My DC wish list:

Option 1: Vic Fangio (The obvious)
Option 2: Brian Flores (If Fangio is hired by Dolphins and Flores doesn't get a HC job - which seems likely)
      Option 3: Josh Boyer

Likelihood of a team hiring Flores to be a HC (with his litigation again NFL owners) is slim to none.

I have always liked Josh Boyer (ex dolphins DC) who is a former Patriots guy who has won 3 superbowls. His primary skill is developing CBs. Between him and Kocurek, our Defense should not miss a beat.

  50. George:

The defeat aside, before Purdy's injury I saw a 49er defense that was controlling the Philly offense, and a Niner offense that could move the ball despite Philly's vaunted front. I found controlling an offense like Philly quite amazing. My main concern going in was that Las Vegas got the spread wrong and we'd be steamrolled, thanks to all the trash talk from the East Coast talking heads. So had there been no injury, this was a game the Niners were going to win, imho. Yes, it's sad we lost, but my take (sans all the emotion) is that we do have enough to win it all. And my take on Philly's chances in the SB, is that they have slim to none.

    1. That was my greatest fear. Now instead of spending the offseason honing his craft and building his body he will have to focus a lot of his energy on rehab. Sucks.

But... that's the good thing of already having Lance on the roster.

      Delete
    2. He can still do a lot of lower body work during his PT, which for him is the most important thing he (and really all) QBs can do. He's not growing anymore, his arm strength is basically what it is, but if he can continue to strengthen his lower body and work on his hip transfer than he could add a few MPH to his throws.

Really tho the greatest amount of time needs to be spent in the film room, get him some VR goggles so he can work on presnap reads and timing of when to throw. Both he and Trey need to work on their recognition, reads and timing, that will pay off the most.

Frankly, I don’t remember the Nick Mullens surgery. Her 2nd response is for UCL repair with InternalBrace.

The irony of this Brock Purdy injury is that it is the same injury Nick Mullens suffered when he was playing for the 49ers in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo in 2020.
    Stephania Bell

    @Stephania_ESPN
Mullens underwent a surgical UCL repair with InternalBrace, less extensive than a complete reconstruction.
If Purdy needs a repair, this would make them the only NFL starting QBs to have had the procedure.
    It’s uncanny.

    6. @Razor: Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. But, but, will Brady want to come. He's at the end of his career and if it were me I would be concerned about the propensity of 49er QBs to get hurt. If he thinks it was the QBs fault in every case, then come on down. If he thinks its the scheme.... It's a really legitimate concern for someone his age.

Actually his response would be very interesting. If he joins, then one might conclude that he is not concerned about the scheme, since he is the GOAT.

    2. Just read that Fangio's GF is an eye surgeon in the Bay Area. If he really wanted Miami, he would have already accepted. But it's also possible he might be trying to get more offers so that Miami will have to pay more (which is the reason for the delay).

My official take on the DeVonta Smith fourth down: The 49ers should've called timeout, and the fact they didn't will haunt them for a long time.

Challenges are valuable but first-half timeouts really aren't — especially given the swing at stake with the outcome of that play

    1. I really dont understand Kyle not calling at least a time out there. They were rushing to snap the ball and it did not cross your mind that maybe they were not sure themselves that it was a complete pass! At the very least, with the timeout, you get your defense ready to play the goal line defense. Ugh!

    3. The "genius" of Kyle Shanahan does not extend to game day coaching.

      Delete
    4. Hmmm... he has his flaws and makes mistakes, but a blanket statement that his game day coaching isn't that good (which is what I assume you mean by that) is wrong imo. But I guess that depends on if you include play calling as part of his game day coaching.

I thought he took big strides this year in being more aggressive with 4th downs and before the half. Both things people had complained about.

      Delete
    5. True. But the rookie mistake was huge in this last playoff game. I honestly think that he needs more help on the sideline. Get either a game day strategic manager or an OC. Calling the plays and trying to manage the game on a sideline where most of the individuals are reacting emotionally and not logically I can imagine is quite difficult.

      Delete
    6. I had hoped that was something Anthony Lynn would help with.

      Delete
    7. And to be fair to Lynn, maybe he did. It is unfortunately not something easily measured.

You have to keep in mind here that Shanahan will always be the one making the final decision. He's the HC, so it will always be his ultimate say. And he also doesn't seem likely to give up play calling duties any time soon, so I think we can forget that for now at least.

One of Lynn's role, as Assistant HC, should have been to assist with in game strategy. Given we saw an improvement in some areas maybe he did have a positive influence. And I will say that this is where having a respected voice and ex-HC, that he didn't groom, is important in that role. Previously he was largely reliant on guys that have been with him for years to give him advice.
