Week 14 Post Game Review: 49ers vs Bucs

By Scooter_McG

Wow! Brock Purdy, he of Mr Irrelevant 2022 fame, just led the 49ers to a 35-7 drubbing of Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - in his very first career start!

If you had told me at the beginning of the year that after 14 weeks of the season the 49ers most complete and comprehensive victory would be with Brock Purdy at QB and against a likely playoff team I'd have laughed in your face. Heck, if you told me that yesterday I'd have done the same. But here we are. The NFL is truly a beautiful competition.

It would be easy to look at the final stat line and think Purdy was pretty much a passenger in the victory, as he finished with only 185 yards. But anyone that watched the game will know the stats lie in this regard. Brock Purdy and the 49ers had such a good day out that the 49ers shut up shop with 14 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. At that point they were already 35-0 up, and Purdy already had his 185 passing yards. He also had two impressive (and long) TD passes plus a 2 yard scamper for a TD of his own.

Purdy finished the day with a traditional QB rating of 134.0 and an ESPN QBR of a whopping 92.8. He consistently made impressive plays showing great instincts (and elusiveness) of when to move to avoid pressure and when to hang in the pocket to deliver strikes. Yes, Purdy did get lucky with a defensive holding call on a poor throw that was picked off over the middle, but all-in-all this was as good a performance as the 49ers could have hoped for from their rookie QB making his first start.

McCaffrey was also a huge factor in this game, gashing the Bucs for yards throughout the first 31 minutes of play, including a 27 yard toe-tapping TD catch and a 38 yard TD run to daylight at the start of the 3rd quarter to put the game to bed early.

The defense was not to be outdone by the offense. They held the Bucs scoreless in the first half with a suffocating defense, then came away with three takeaways in the second half to make sure the Bucs could not find a way back into the game. While the DL failed to register any sacks, they did create pressure on Brady and forced him into a number of errant passes, two of which were picked off. The back seven was even more impressive. They provided constant tight coverage and played with ferocity throughout. Dre Greenlaw in particular had a monster game with 15 total tackles and an acrobatic INT. Jimmie Ward also stood out with a number of big plays.

The only blemish on the day was a few injuries, including what looked like it could be a devastating lower leg injury to Deebo Samuel. The early prognosis though is not as bad as feared, with the news out of the locker room being a high ankle sprain with a 3-6 week window for his return. Kevin Givens and Kerry Hyder also appeared to pick up injuries that see them miss time, while the man of the moment himself, Brock Purdy, will need to prove his fitness ahead of the coming TNF game with the Seahawks as he suffered an oblique injury.

Looking forward, it remains too early to say whether Purdy will prove himself to be a competent starting QB in the NFL or capable of taking this team deep into the playoffs. But one thing is for sure, the past two weeks have given 49er fans plenty of reason for optimism.

Regarding Purdy's arm strength, it looks adequate to me and greater than Jimmy's at this point in Jimmy's career. But I'm wondering if it can get stronger through "strength and conditioning." Would anyone know the answer to that?

    1. Arm strenght has to be one of the most overrated attributes for a successful QB. Can't really say who has a stronger arm based off of plays on the field, too many variables at play, would need some 1997 QB Club/Pro Bowl QB Challenge (man I miss those) to see who can throw it the furthest. But have to say, if you watched some of those Steve was never anywhere close to the biggest arm guy, he'd be in that 55-60 yard range whereas Bledsoe and Favre were going well past 70 yards.

Point is that arm strength didn't limit Steve's ability to be the best QB of the 90s, he may not have had Favre's velocity/distance but he had much better accuracy and decision making.

Arm strength doesn't improve much, but what does is lower body work. If you're Mahomes, you just flick it, but guys like Purdy and Jimmy they need a bit more assistance from their lower half to get those extra 5 to 10 yards and MPH on velocity.

    2. Jimmy G: 56 mph velocity
      Purdy: 52 mph velocity
      Desean Watson: 45 mph velocity

Purdy's team mates call him baby bosa because of his quads. He's got an outstanding base for a quarterback.

    3. Funny that JGs velocity is higher, many would think the other way around.

BTW...loving to see the browns fail yesterday...would be great if the Watson trade craters them for another decade.

    4. George, look at the work he's already put into it

    5. YW Mood. As I commented elsewhere on that article..."We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better...stronger...faster." lol

  2. When the niners clinch the West, most likely Thursday, then that should allow Deebo to take his time to come back and be healthy for the 1st round matchup (assuming Phili doesn't fall off a cliff the next 4 games and allow the Niners to grab that #1). If they're still fighting for a playoff spot come game 16 or 17, and he's at 70-80% good I can see him coming out and getting reps, if in only as just another matter for the defenses to worry about (the 2019 Richard Sherman effect).

  3. Any info on Purdy's oblique, it's a serious injury and in extreme instances can require surgery. Josh Johnson anyone?

    1. Left oblique. News on several MRI's including Purdy's coming down at Noon Pacific Time

    2. That sucks for Johnson.

I've never suffered an oblique injury. Is it something you can play through (once it has cooled down after the initial injury)?

    3. Scooter it just depends on the severity. Heck it might be something else. It's something that is more common with baseball players and golfers.

    4. Fingers crossed it is pretty minor then. Apparently the injury happened pretty early in the game - I figure if he was able to play through it then it bodes well for not being too serious.

    1. Dodged the proverbial bullet there. Could have been, and looked, a lot worse.

    2. Yes, other than Johnson it looks like the Niners didn't suffer major blows with the rest of the injuries.

  5. "Quarterback Brock Purdy is considered day-to-day with an oblique/rib injury. The injury occurred early in Sunday's game, and the quarterback managed to play through it. The 49ers provided a report that estimates what participation might have been like had the team practiced on Monday. Purdy was listed as a "limited participant.""

  6. Seahawks defense gives up just under 6 yards of YAC per reception, ranking them 31st out of 32 teams. Yikes!

  7. The #49ers have signed DL Michael Dwumfour to the practice squad, per @AaronWilson_NFL

    Back to the Texans well.

  8. #49ers are averaging 1.8 net yards per play on the road this season, but they are even (0.0) at home.

Thanks, rib. A really great article that opened up a subject I had never read about before. It's a "must read" for Brock fans. I infer from the article that he's high intelligence on the field and wants to become great.

    1. This is in response to the article Ribico posted above. If you haven't read it, you're missing something about the inner workings of Brock Purdy.

Just a thought about Brock's injury occurring early in the game: To me it suggests the power behind those long throws to CMC and Aiyuk was curtailed. Aiyuk had to come back to the ball. Also, I recall that broken play throw to Deebo which floated in the air.
