Week 1 Post Game Review: 49ers @ Bears

By Scooter_McG

While it was nice to have the NFL season started, there is no denying the performance and result was far from what any 49ers fan was hoping for. The 49ers lost the season opener to the Bears 19-10 in a wet and sloppy game, and one the 49ers really should have won comfortably. Yes, the weather made it difficult, but it impacted both teams equally and can't be used as an excuse.

No, the 49ers can only blame themselves for this loss. They absolutely dominated the first half from a field position and yards gained point of view, but only managed to come away with 7 points to show for it, as Deebo Samuel fumbled away the ball on the opening drive in the red zone and Lance overthrew a wide open Tyler Kroft for what would have likely been another score. Including the third quarter they reached the red zone three times (plus the missed TD to Kroft) but only put 10 points on the board. In the end the team outgained the Bears on offense to the tune of 331 yards versus 204 yards. Yet somehow they only managed just over half the Bears points.

The loss can squarely be put down to two things. They allowed the Bears to hang around despite dominating the game, which meant the Bears only needed a limited number of opportunities and a couple of big plays to take the lead. And they continually committed dumb penalties to extend Bears drives, which finally came back to bite them in the second half when, combined with some silly errors in the form of blown assignments in defense and a poor intercept from Lance, gave the Bears some quick momentum and points to take a lead they would never relinquish in the fourth quarter.

As razor put it, an "undisciplined pile of poo by the 49ers team today".

We've seen this story before. We witnessed it over the first nine games of last season. It was troubling how long it took the team to correct their attitude in 2021 and start playing with the level of ruthlessness and discipline that championship hopefuls need to have. Talent isn't the issue for this team, just as it wasn't last year, and hopefully it won't take them long this time around to find their footing and start playing some good football.

Some other notable points from the game:

  • Talanoa Hufanga had his best game as a pro as he was routinely around the ball and making plays. He was easily the 49ers best on the day. However, i won't yet go proclaiming him as the 49ers next great safety - the wet weather also suited his style of game as it allowed him to play aggressively downhill without fear of getting beat deep.
  • The pass coverage in general was actually pretty good throughout the game, bar a couple of missed assignments from Greenlaw. But again... the wet weather helped.
  • Speaking of Greenlaw, he probably had his worst game as a pro, with far too much ill discipline.
  • The running game was good and the OL did a nice job of opening lanes for the RBs (and Lance) to find positive yards. However, the pass protection left a lot to be desired on too many occasions and will need to be cleaned up.
  • Lance had an up and down day, but mostly down. As he outlined in his post game presser, there were a few mistakes from him that proved costly in this one. But... much like with the 49ers pass coverage, it needs to be noted that the weather did the QBs no favours in this game.

  1. Nice critique, Scooter. There were some tic tac calls by the referee's but the 49ers have themselves to blame for giving them an opportunity to make them.

  2. You are just wrong about the 49ers pass coverage yesterday!

And my biggest issue with this, Scooter_McG - is that you guys know as well as I do, how much more difficult it is on any QB, and how much of an advantage it is for any defense, when a team can consistently create pressure without sending more than 4 pass-rushers, because we've seen the 49ers dismantle QB's like HOFQB - Aaron Rodgers, and quality veteran QB - Kirk Cousins, by doing exactly that with their front 4, over the last few years!

According to ESPN Stats & Information research: TREY LANCE faced pressure on 35% of his drops, despite the Bears never once sending more than 4 pass rushers, doesn't mean the OL's deficiencies were any less impactful. The fact is - over the last 15 NFL seasons, are now 1-6 in situations where their QB drops back 30-plus times and doesn’t face a blitz .... doesn't change this fact!

Was the 49ers OL better in run-blocking than it was in pass-protection, yesterday? Perhaps "marginally", at best! The fact is ... the Niners' OL is NOWHERE NEAR GOOD ENOUGH right now, and that makes developing perhaps the most inexperienced starter (QB) in league history, tougher than it ever needed to be.

  4. Huf did have a really good game, hopefully its the first of many. I thought the pass protection was very similar in years past. It hasn't been good and probably won't get much better. This game reminded me of the Washington game few years ago.

The lack of starters playing in exhibition games sure showed up, team looked rusty. The only beef I have with Lance is the sacks, I thought he was supposed to be elusive. Also, it looked like the team was tired in the fourth quarter.

For the most part the team stunk as a whole with mistakes galore. Lack of discipline...similar to last year.

    1. 49ERs Offensive Center - JAKE BRENDEL, arguably the 2nd most important position on a Kyle Shanahan OL, was the 3rd lowest graded offensive player on the field yesterday, according to PFF.

Remember, this is the guy who's making all of the line-calls, and taking the pressure off of Trey Lance! Then again, it's not like Brendel even had all the much to call, considering the Bears were able to generate pressure on Lance at an astounding 35% rate, with only 4 pass rushers.

This is in a lot of ways, the opposite of the way teams attacked Jimmy. The 49ers faced a lot of run-blitzes with Jimmy, which opened up the middle of the field for him. Trey Lance get's no such benefit!

How in the world did the 49ers drop the ball at OC like this? Can somebody please tell me? They knew very well that ALEX MACK was retiring before the start of FA & way before the draft. And yet, the 49ers used their first 2 pick on luxury picks, including on a RB who, just like last season, wasn't even active on game day! In fact, 2 of the 49ers first 3 draft picks were HEALTHY SCRATCHES to start the season, meanwhile the interior OL (right side) is in absolute shambles!

The astonishing thing for me is, we all knew this. I was sounding the alarm during free agency, and then when the 49ers took TDP and Danny Grey with 2 of their first 3 draft picks, I nearly flipped my lid!

This is how you develop a QB, Kyle? Seriously? I am so angry at Kyle because this feels sabotage at worst, and at best, it feel like roster malpractice!

  5. It was a rough one. No doubt about it.
The problem is, this game showcased a lot of characteristics of Shanahan teams.
    1. Lot of penalties.
    2. The amount of yardage doesn't correspond with the amount of points scored.
    3. (This goes with the above 2 points) His teams, struggle to put games away when they appear to be dominating.

I don't want to sound like I'm calling for his job, far from it, but these are becoming traits of his teams, and that is problematic.

  6. It's not helping that Trent Williams looks out of shape, while McGlinchey looks a step slower than usual (for good reason), but the fact is, the way Kyle has set this season up, there will be NO GRACE PERIOD for Trey Lance, no matter how Kyle tries to frame this!

Just to give you one example of what Trey Lance is up against right now, even though yesterday wasn't even his fault because Trey never had a fighting chance behind the 49ers woefully inexperienced interior OL -

MARK ADAMS - 49ERSWebzone: "Hopefully, the 49ers were embarrassed enough to come out angry against the Seahawks next week. Then again, they haven't exactly had much luck against Seattle over the last decade. Lose this next one though, and the rumblings you are hearing now will become deafening!"

Scooter_McG and Razor, can I ask you guys one 2-PART question for the week, and then I'll get out of your hair until next week?

      QUESTION:

1a) Is the 49ers interior OL (LG, OC, RG) among the least experienced, if not THE least experienced interior OL in the league? I believe these 3 interior OL have 5, maybe 6 total NFL starts BETWEEN them!

1b) If they are among the least experienced interior OL, how is that acceptable for you guys as a Forty Niner Faithful, knowing how important the OL is for a young QB (especially at OC), and just how important this year is for Trey Lance?

  10. Position group grades -

    Offensive line: F

Trent Williams was easily the Niners’ best offensive linemen, and even he committed a false start penalty. Mike McGlinchey looked rusty at right tackle, getting completely embarrassed by Dominique Robinson on a third-down sack, and the 49ers’ interior offensive line did not exceed expectations. Aaron Banks, Jake Brendel, and Spencer Burford were consistently collapsing into Lance’s face, forcing him to move around in the pocket.

It may surprise you to know that the Bears never blitzed on Sunday. All the pressure Chicago generated was by sending four or fewer rushers. Burford did have some great highlights in the run game, and frankly, since he’s the only rookie on the line, his performance is probably the most understandable. The fact that 2021 second-round pick Aaron Banks and veteran center Jake Brendel looked as bad as they did is a far bigger cause for concern for the 49ers’ offense.

  11. "On the inventory of things that went wrong for the 49ers on Sunday, the play of their unproven interior offensive linemen was far down on the list.

“By no means were they perfect, but they weren’t the difference in this game or anything like that,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said in the aftermath of the team’s 19-10 loss to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.

Rookie right guard Spencer Burford did not allow any quarterback pressures in his NFL debut, and left guard Aaron Banks also graded out well as a run-blocker and in pass protection, according to Pro Football Focus. Banks allowed two quarterbacks pressures."

49reasons will tell a different tale. Like I say the O line will be fine. This team will be clicking in a few more games.

    1. Reasons is blinkered to just one thing - Trey Lance. Has been since last offseason. All of his comments atm are about Lance in some way, shape or form, and designed to shift any blame for his play from Lance to other aspects of the team. Since the season opener it has all been about how the OL and Shanahan failed Lance.

But of course the reality is there were far more glaring reasons the team lost than the OL or Shanahan. And one of those is how Lance himself played, though again their were more glaring issues than him as well.

The OL was ok. Not great, and they gave up more pressures than you want to see, but it was ok. As Shanahan said, certainly not the reason they lost.

      Delete
    2. I don't know about Reasons, but if your talikng about me, I'm not blinkered to anything, Scooter_McG.

All I'm asking is why he wasn't set up for success this season, given how much pressure he has been put upon? That's all it is. The lack of protection up front, and the entirely unnecessary,

By the way Scooter_McG, I noticed you and Razoreater were unable to answer my 2-part question, which is very telling, BTW!

But yah, nobody can convince me that the 49ers did right by Trey Lance this off-season - providing him the most inexperienced interior OL, with a shaky RT! But then they made matters even tougher, when they made the counterproductive choice to bring Jimmy G back, which likely undermines Trey's leadership this season as well.

Like I said - experienced veteran QB's (even HOFers) would struggle behind this OL. Can they get this fixed? Maybe they can (and it's a tall task), but what I don't think is fixable, is the unnecessary QUARTERBACK CONTROVERSY which the 49ers created before right before the start of the season.

How in the world can this team create an identity early in the season, when they already have a QB controversy that that threatens the locker room?

MARK MY WORDS, Scooter_McG and Razoreater, this is never going to work, and it's a "plan" that was doomed from the start. Stay tuned!

    10. emjay is right you don't know football and you are the worst type of fan, a frontrunner who disappears when things go sideways after ranting incoherently.

The reason Garoppolo was running the scout team is because you want your backup to get some snaps in case he actually has to play. Having your backup sitting there watching Lance and Purdy take all the snaps is stupid. You also want your defense to see the plays they will face and there aren't a lot of called runs for Justin Fields. Most of his running yards happen when the play breaks down which you can't create in practice effectively and certainly not with Brock Purdy playing the role. He is nowhere near the athlete Fields is.

Do us and yourself a favor, just cheer for the favorite each season. This season that is probably the Bills and it will satisfy your frontrunner mentality while also sparing us from having to read your constant stream of nonsense on here.

How in world is Jimmy "cement-footed" Garoppolo preparing the 49ers defense for Justin Fields, who is one of the most mobile QB's the league has ever seen?

Is there anything at all similar about Jimmy's skill-set, and Justin Fields' skill-set?

    12. Notanexpert, I have a question for you:

Does Kyle Shanahan have a winning record overall, or a losing record overall, now that he is in his 6th season a head coach? How many Super Bowls has he won?

I'm a Niners fan since 1982, and my Niners wrote the book on winning records, and winning Super Bowls. NOTHING LESS WILL SUFFICE!

    13. Kyle's done some good things, be undermined his entire tenure when he:

      a) didn't even bother to evaluate the 2017 QB draft prospects, even though the 49ers desperately needed one.

      b) traded 3 first round picks to move up for a QB whom he hadn't even scouted. In fact, it's obvious that they made that move without even knowing who they wanted to pick at #3. That's just idiotic.

      c) and now Kyle has completely undermined that pick, in a way that should INFURIATE every 49ers fan on the planet.

When this season goes up in flames, and it will, I at least hope you guys are honest about what went wrong, and who's to blame! Just be honest for a change. It's OK to question the leadership of your favorite football team. In fact, it's actually healthy not to blindly follow as a fanatic, ignoring this issues, and simply keeping your fingers crossed and hoping for the best.

    16. UC,
I take PFF grades with a grain of salt. They were not terrible and Lance had time to throw but he is not yet comfortable moving in an NFL pocket where there is always trash. ie, he needs to learn to slide around, keep his eyes down field and remain in position to fire the ball. This takes reps and time... but he should get there.
That said, there were several plays where everyone blocked it up well but one OL missed his assignment that blew up the play. So in that case w/ PFF 4 guys get a positive grade and one gets a negative but the end result is a pressure or tfl or whatever.
BTW I hate seeing Ross Dewelley in there, he provides less as a blocker than a road cone. Once again he blew up a potential TD (for Deebo) by completely whiffing on a block. All he needed to do was get in the way, but he failed to even do that.

    17. I agree Shoup about PFF grades, I only use it as a point of reference. In no way do I think the O line is very good, but I will say that they played better than expected.

    18. Shoup...and Trey also needs to get the ball out quicker, he's still in the mindset that many rookies have where they wait until they see the receiver open, instead of throwing to where the guy will be when he gets open.

Perfect example is the long pass to R.R. McCloud (sounds like a character from a western, so I'll stick with it). If you watch the play, the point at which Trey should have thrown the ball was when RR made his initial cut, going across the middle. The safety was already in pursuit of BA, and RR would have had plenty of open field to cut up had the ball come to him then, instead Trey held and held and made a very long pass across the field that was completed, but to do so required the ball to just pass over a defender trying to tip it down field, as well the pass got to RR literally an 1/8th of a second before a DB came screatching across RR's face. Had that ball been a microsecond late the DB breaks it up or gets an int.

So yeah, while it was a big completion, Trey made it WAAAY too difficult and high risk. As well, RR had no chance to make any RAC as there were, at that point, 3 defenders around him, again showing that if Trey had thrown the ball when RR made his first cut he'd have likely have scored as BA would have been able to provide a block on the safety over the top.

This has always been my worry with Trey and have yet to see any real growth, getting the ball out to your reads quick. He holds the ball. Hopefully this improves with play as well his ability to call presnap changes improve as he gets more experience, if not he will be pulled.

Please do NOT respond to Anonymous (49Reasons), as it only enables him! He's incapable of controlling his emotions and responding to his posts only leads to irrational rants and venting! Please, just IGNORE him! You are NOT going to chance his mind.
NOTE: He's admitted that his wife has TRIED, but can't control him, so what chance do any of us have?

    1. Highly doubt he has a wife, unless she's blow up! Zing!!

I try not to engage but sometimes its water torture and I can't take it, but the more as time goes by I realize the dude is living with the same mentality of qanoners, just completely lost to reality, won't consider that they're wrong and everyone see's them as a loon.

An explanation why the 9ers lost. Inexperience, Mistakes, and lack of discipline! We seen it last year and now, again at the start of this season.
If it happens against the Seahawks this Sunday, it's becoming a trend
and that is the fault of the coaches, starting with KS. Everyone needs
    to be held accountable.

  31. I've seen a few people's review of the TDs allowed against the Bears, and based on what more knowledgeable people are saying it would appear I was a little harsh in blaming Greenlaw for the Pettis and ESB TDs.

Looks like Pettis was actually Hufanga's responsibility on that play, but he bailed on his responsibility as soon as he saw Fields escape around the edge. While the ESB TD looks like it was Gipson's responsibility to track back with him but he got fooled by the play action.

    1. Greg Cossell said that he watched the two TDs several times. He didn't think Huff screwed up on either. He didn't blame any DB for the Pettis TD because the broken play lasted too long.

It was unfortunate that the D line lost containment in their excessively aggressive pursuit on a slippery wet field. Niners' have lost to mobile QBs the same way since Wilson's early years. They've won against mobile QBs when the D line squeezed down the pocket in a disciplined way.

    2. Thanks Scooter. I, too, suspected Greenlaw.

  32. Seems a lot is being made of rain on Sunday, think this is being widely overblown. This will not be like last Sunday or many a playoff game at Candlestick (no Cowboys v Niners January 95 level slop).

Crazy that what used to be considered a blunder (the sod at Levi's) has been recently deemed as one of, if not thee best fields in the league. As dry as its been here the last year, any rain that comes down will be swallowed up and absorbed.

Also, if Trey can't win in the light rain we will get Sunday thats a bad thing as how do we expect this team to go to GB or Seattle or Phili/NY to get wins in January??

    1. The ground here in South Bay is so dry that an inch of rain will be disappear in no time.

  34. My take on the 9ers VS Seattle game on Sunday:
    * I expect KS to use WR Danny Grey to take the top off the D and force Seattle to protect all of the field, not just between the hash marks.
NOTE: Seattle has implemented a 3-4 hybrid defensive scheme, VS Carroll’s classic 4-3 base.
    * Without LB Bobby Wagner, the challenge for the Seahawks LB will be now having to account for pass rush adjustments on the outside in addition to zone coverage assignments for the middle and flat zone coverage adjustments….The obvious question for the Seattle will be, “IF” Jordyn Brooks is able to fill the shoes of the future hall of fame linebacker Bobby Wagner.
    * Also, can Seattle LB Cody Barton, cover 9er's Deebo, or Aiyuk? My money is on Deebo and Aiyuk…..

  35. Mitch Wishnowsky - four year extension

  36. Kyle's weekly KNBR interview 2 weeks ago was illuminating about the RBs. He made it clear that he saw both Sermon and Hasty as third down backs and that Sermon was the better of the two. But he prioritized having the two rookies compete as the backup to Mitchell on first and second downs. He was looking forward to having Sermon on the PS.

Reading between the lines, I figure that Wilson is seen primarily as a backup on all three downs when all the backs are available. If not in this Sunday's game, over the next two weeks, I'd expect one of the two rookies to be the starting back until Mitchell returns. Wilson most likely will be in third down situations because of his better pass pro skills. With a versatile wide back, the need for a pure third down back may be moot.
