Week 2 Matchup: Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers

Welcome to our week 2 matchup. Can the 49ers get that bad taste out of their mouths that the Bears left them with against a division rival? On paper it should be no contest, however the 49ers are 1-0 in beating themselves. Let's hope they play disciplined ball and get the win. Go Niners!

    1. I'd be more concerned about that "breeze" if it becomes a strong wind.

    2. Yeah, drizzle returned briefly but not a big deal. Temperatures in the lows 60s.

    3. David Lombardi is reporting that Levis is very windy as of 10:30 am.

  2. Pete will be employing a 3-4 scheme for the first time in his five-decade career. Still seems to be using a 5 man front, though, based on what I saw against Denver. I think Niners will have success running against their LBs.

Based on warmups, the 49ers' RB order is: Jeff Wilson, Ty Davis-Price, Jordan Mason, And you can expect a healthy serving of Deebo Samuel as well.

  7. Well sure glad we got JG as a backup.

    1. True. But... I wonder how much knowing JG was there encouraged Shanahan to use Lance as a RB a bit more freely?

      Sigh. Injuries suck.

      Delete
    2. Isn't that why they got Lance was to run?

      Delete
    3. Part of it yeah. Funny how all the people who were saying Lance would get 800 yards and be an mvp now probably pissed that he was running.

      Delete
    4. Under, the way they are using him that was definitely why they drafted him.

But my thoughts were they drafted him for the threat his ability to run provides. I never suspected he would be running 10+ times a game. Shanahan has so far used him like he is Cam Newton. Injury aside, that never seemed like a good idea to me.

    6. Fantastic. Looks like he will be going into season 3 with just 3 full starts under his belt. Hate to say it, but Shanahan does have to take the lion's share of responsibility for it.

    7. Biggest complaint with JG is availability, Lance has that problem too. Broken finger now looks like a broken ankle.

      Delete
  8. Unfortunately not able to watch this one live, but hearing Lance now down after a designed run and right leg in air cast as he is carted off the field.

I mean, injuries happen, but why does Shanahan insist on using Lance as a battering ram? Hopefully not as serious as it is sounding...

    1. It was a read option. I feel like Lance was too willing to keep on those, especially that one as Ray ray had a lot of room had Trey have him the ball.

Btw, expect endless 49lesion posts hating on Kyle. Be prepared.

      Delete
    2. To be fair eMJay, in this instance he will have a point. Using your QB as a RB as often as Shanahan has been was always going to increase the risk of this happening.

      Delete
    3. No doubt, I just feel like Trey was too willing to hold and not let the RB take it.

      Delete
    4. Yep, that play has several options within it because it's the same one where Samuel ran for 51 yards.

Trey Lance is a running quarterback. If he doesn't run, his value to the Niners craters — especially at this early portion of his career. You can blame Kyle all you want for the injury, but his allegiance is to the team and winning and that means you run Lance.

    100% correct

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes and no. 13 carries last week. 3 carries in two drives this week. Using his legs is one thing, using him as a RB another. If his value to the team is as a RB they drafted the wrong player.

      Delete
    2. Might be that Kyle realizes he's not a good passer yet, so he needs Trey to run to offset his passing deficiency.

      Delete
  10. So let's get this straight .... Kyle Shanahan decides that Jimmy Garoppolo is too inconsistent, and too injury prone to depend on, so he uses THREE 1st round picks on a QB so that he can run that QB primarily BETWEEN THE TACKLES?

I posted that Kyle Shanahan thinks TREY LANCE is LARRY CSONKA, after the Bears game, and told all of you guys that Trey wouldn't last 6 weeks if Kyle keeps using him like a FULLBACK!

Something is clearly wrong with Kyle Shanahan's brain! We all know Jimmy can't stay healthy, so now I expect the 49ers to be down to their 3rd string QB by week 4!

    What a waste!

    1. Heck, they might be down to their 3rd string QB before the end of this game!

      Kyle Shanahan needs help!

  11. He broke his ankle, that could have happened on a pass play.

Treys value is running the ball, hes not an elite passer, not yet and who knows if he ever will be.

You Trey stans were talking all that noise how he could move and make plays with his let's yet when he does and gets hurt you want to now throw blame, you're a hypocrite.

    1. Trey got folded up like a pretzel. What do you expect when you consistently run him up the gut of the defense?

Stop making excuses for Kyle Shanahan!

    2. It's Kyle's failure for not using Treey Lance like a QUARTERBACK!

      Delete
  12. Very sorry for Trey Lance! Best case scenario, he comes back after the bye. Worse case, lost for the season. Either way, not good for his development as a QB and I have to say, Kyle shares responsibility here. Not wise to use your Franchise QB as an RB.

If Trey is out for the season, question is can Jimmy G last 15 more games?

Oh well. Just get a win here without any more injuries.

    1. If it's a broken ankle he's out 12 weeks

    2. It's a season ender! I feel bad for Trey, he got drafted by the wrong HC! The kid never had a chance! What a shame!

Well, at least there is no longer a QB controversy. Congratulations Kyle, you are stuck with Jimmy for another season.

    3. Can Jimmy stay healthy? Unlikely, but he's got a chance now to prove everyone wrong, because outside of the QB position, they have one of the best rosters in the league.

  18. I truly hope you guys realize what Kyle just did to his Super Bowl window, now that Jimmy will also be a free agent?

Kyle took a roster with an open Super Bowl window, and flushed 3 1st round picks down the drain, and let his other QB hit free agency. What a BONEHEAD!

As PFF put it: "Garoppolo’s passing grade wasn't the greatest in his first game action of the season (62.9), and he made just one big-time throw to accompany his one turnover-worthy play."

  21. I get Shanahan's comments about Lance's use not being that dissimilar to other QBs. I do. But... he's been getting asked to run a lot up the middle, while most of the other teams they try and isolate the QB. Lance's use is closer to how Cam Newton was used, but he was 260lbs (and was a shadow of himself by 30). Allen does some similar stuff, but he's also closer to 250lbs.

Lance is built more like Hurts, but Hurts is more elusive.

If they want to keep using Lance in the running game moving forward I hope they do so as more of a perimeter runner in space, and tell him to avoid taking hits.

    1. Thanks for your honesty, Scooter.

But, I personally DON'T understand Kyle's explanation, because he's completely ignoring the elephant in the room - SITUATIONAL FOOTBALL.

It's one thing to run your QB between the tackles, if your running game is working, and you desperately need to pick up short yardage. Neither of these two scenarios were the situation for the 49ers. The 49ers RB's were having success, and it was 2nd & 8, against the Seahawks base defense, in Seattle territory, with a 6 point lead, so why in the world is Kyle putting his franchise QB at risk for no good reason whatsoever? That's the issue!

Like I say, Scooter, this is the thing that drives me nuts about Kyle. And then when the reporters dare to ask the obvious question, Kyle treats everyone as if they are stupid and have never watched football!

      Delete
    2. I meant - if your running game ISN'T working

    3. Scooter, he's a power runner not a perimeter runner.

    4. He's a QUARTERBACK, Razor. He's not a fullback. What in the world are you talking about?

Honestly, if you think that little of Trey Lance as a QB, I don't know what else to say to you.

      Delete
    5. Yeah... you can't use your QB as a power back. Not and expect them to stay healthy. If that is what their plan for him was then their plan wasn't a good one imo.

  22. You guys will have to forgive me if I'm less than enthused to go back to a QB who nobody else in the league wants. Meh!

  23. If you're not going to run Lance, and he is a power running quarterback, then you might as well start Jimmy G because Jimmy is a better pocket passer at this point in their repective careers.

    ReplyDelete
  24. "Do you guys watch other teams in this league? Buffalo does it all the time with their quarterback (Josh Allen)," Shanahan said. "It's a pretty normal play. It's part of football. It's unfortunate that he hurt his ankle on it but it's a very normal-ran play. Watch some other people."

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nice try Razoreater.

Most of the NFL rule changes over the last 15 years are designed to protect the QB, and yet you are defending Kyle for drafting a "power running quarterback", as if there is such a thing these days, and running him between the tackles as if he's Larry Csonka?

Are you serious, Razor? You honestly think the way to win in the NFL in 2022 is to draft a 225 lbs running QB and run him between the tackles 10 times a game? Really dude?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's your problem Razor. At least Scooter_McG is being honest.

      But you?

You will defend Kyle even at the risk of sounding like you know absolutely nothing about NFL football in 2022!

      SMH!

      Delete
    2. I hope Trey Lance demands a trade at this point, because he should. If you think all he is is a power runner, and Kyle thinks all he is is a power runner .... then Trey needs to demand a trade!

      Delete
  26. I'm getting a chuckle out of Razoreater defending Kyle fore using THREE 1st round picks, to draft a 225lbs "power running" QB, so that he can run him between the tackles 10 times a game. In 2021!

  27. I have never seen such a negative fan as I have with 49reasons. He will state that he has been a fan since the 80's, from my perspective that is nothing, I got 30 years on him. 49reasons loves Lance and hates Shanny, that is all that he knows about football. He spews nothing but negativity.

In this case I have to agree with Razor, Lance is an inside runner, he is not an elusive type of QB as witnessed in the game against the Bears. He is not a Lamar type of QB but more of a Newton type.

Some good things came out of this game, Huf continues to get better, the running game showed up and the O-line outperformed expectations. Aiyuk dropped an easy 40 yards pass. Deebo is Deebo one of a kind. Defense was really good and special teams screwed up.

    ReplyDelete
  28. One problem I have comparing Lance's usage with Allen is that for the most part Allen's runs are not designed runs. He sometimes takes off very quickly on a play and he is probably getting told if his first read isn't there and he sees an opening to go for it, but they aren't designed runs into traffic. As a result he doesn't often take big shots (though he also does have a habit of inviting hits on occasion where he doesn't need to).

I didn't mind the first run up the middle in this game as it came at a time when the opposition really probably wasn't expecting it and the field was opened up. But the next two were very much using him as a RB right into traffic. Last week a lot of his runs were also designed runs in traffic.

The injury sucks, and injuries can happen at any time. Luck plays a big part. I get that, and that getting injured on a designed run so early in the season will always bring out the reactionary comments and invite questions.

I'm trying not to be reactionary with what I say here - but I really do think Shanahan's plan was faulty. It just isn't a strategy with a high likelihood of being sustainable - you just have to see how many RBs the 49ers go through to realise using your QB that way probably wasn't the best idea.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First of all I have never been enamored with a running QB as they seem to get injured frequently. Allen has been lucky it will end at some point. The two things that I have heard consistently is the reason for Lance is two fold. One - his running capabilities, two was availability. Lance has twice now have had injuries, remember JG ACL injury was due to what - running the football. I didn't like the trade to begin with and nothing as yet has changed my mine. Hopefully in your review you will point out all the positives in this game as there was many.

      Delete
    2. I've always believe the "running capabilities" were more about his ability to avoid would be negative plays by using his legs. When they drafted him I never thought it was with the idea of using him heavily as a designed runner. If that was the plan then I am with you - bad plan.

I haven't had a chance to watch the game - just watched the first drive and have seen the play Lance got injured. Will watch the full game when I get home and write a review, which will definitely be about more than just Lance.

      Delete
    3. Watching the Bears game when the pocket collapsed, I noted that Lance lacked the elusiveness that a Jackson or Wilson has. The complete story of Lance has of yet been told. I still am holding my fingers crossed that this was not a bad trade.

      Delete
  29. Shanahan forever will be questioned because of how much the design of the offense called for quarterback runs.

But, after all, that's why the 49ers were attracted to Lance so much in the first place.

There was little doubt Lance would run the ball. There was also little doubt that Shanahan would be open for second-guessing any time Lance sustained an injury.

    That's part of the deal.
