  1. That is a great roster there!
Speculating here, but here are my thoughts:

RBs - Based on how physical our RBs are, I would expect least one of them to start the season on IR and this opens the door for Jordan Mason to sneak in. :)

OL - Not so sure about Nick Zakelj. Too green is what I hear in camp reports. I guess Skule with his experience wins out.

LBs - Demetrius-Flannigan Fowles instead of Curtis Robinson

CB - Since Darqueze Dennard is a vet, he does not need to go through the waivers, so I think Castro-Fields gets in and Dennard gets elevated every game from the PS. I'm sure the Front office does not want another DJ Reed-like situation, if they cut one of our young corners.

Overall, I think it's gonna be a headache to get to 53, which is how it should be.

On a side note, Lance was solid in camp today. Nice bounceback from a bad Sunday. Go Niners!

    1. I'm thinking Dennard is there to hold down the NC until Womack is able to take over by week 3. That's when I would expect Verrett to come off PUP and Dennard would go to the practice squad.

  3. 9ers day 11 Training Camp:
    * Lance: Had best day of 9er training camp, 13 for 11 with 1 TD (to Deebo), and 2 rushing TD's
    * Sudfeld: Had 2 touchdown in red zone. A pass to Willie Sneed over the coverage of Ambry Thomas and hit Troy Fumagalli over LB Jeremiah Gemmel for a TD in the back of the end zone.
    * O-Line improvement: On 3Rd and 8 the D sent pressure. The O-Line picked it up and Lance stood in the pocket to find Jennings in the right flat for a big catch and run.
    * Bosa: After not playing much last couple of sessions, sacked Lance and collapsing the pocket on several occasions.
    * Fred Warner: Stuffed Trey Sermon on an inside run play. Then on second to last play of the day, Warner read the eyes of Trey Lance and hit the ball away from Juszczyk.
Deebo: Caught all 3 targets from Lance. All went for either a first down or a touchdown.
    * Aiyuk: Caught 4 of 6 targets today, the two incompletions were a poorly thrown ball from Nate Sudfeld and a Lance throw away.
    * Samuel Womack: Broke up a pass to Jauan Jennings in the end zone. The rookie continues to impress in his first training camp.
    * Alex Barrett: Showed explosiveness, getting a sack on Trey Lance. Later pressured Lance, forcing him to scramble to the other side. If
he continues stacking days like today, he'll make the first cut.
Both Charles Omenihu and Kerry Hyder made plays that stood out.
    * Jason Poe: IMO, no player has shown more growth this offseason than Jason Poe. Today he won the majority of his reps in one-on-ones and carried that into the team period. If he continues to improve, this Rookie could surprise and make the 53?
    * Jordan Mills: Based on what he showed today, I'll go out on a limb and say he's a better pass protector than either Moore or Skule. I Hope he gets field time against the Packers and Vikings....
    * Both RB's Wilson and Mason had long gains. Mason is making it
hard to NOT make the 53!
    * Justin Skule: struggled to block anyone in 1 on 1 drills! He was been beaten repeatedly.
Ambry Thomas: Gives up catch after catch. Today he gave up a TD to new teammate Willie Snead.

I haven't paid much attention to ST. They're working with Wishnowsky, or with the jugs after team scrimmages.
I know McCloud's working with Wishnowsky and sometimes Aiyuk or Grey is catching Gould when he kicks off. But as far as I know, there hasn't been any tackling, unless they're on a side field and I wasn't paying attention?

  5. Nice 53 razor.

I'd only make a few changes. At this stage I am thinking Poe makes the roster over Zakelj... or maybe instead of a 6th WR. Sounds like he has worked his way up the depth chart. I also think DFF makes it as the 5th LB over Robinson.

CB is the most interesting one though. Sounds like Hollman and the Boomerang are right in the mix there. But I think you are right and they stick with the youth if it is close.

  9. Trey Lance's 49ers preseason playing time outlined by Kyle Shanahan
As of Tuesday, coach Kyle Shanahan’s plan is to have Trey Lance get some playing time during the 49ers' first preseason match-up against the Green Bay Packers this Friday.
With three preseason games within the span of 14 days, the head coach is being cautious with his starters in preparation for Week 1.
"In my mind right now I’d like Trey to get in in games one and three,” Shanahan said Tuesday. “Right now my gut is exactly what I said but it could change after these two practices and what we see out there, but I would definitely like to get him out there this week.”
The head coach explained that with two joint practices in Minnesota next week with the Vikings, Lance and most of the starting lineup will not play in the second preseason game. Shanahan finds the scrimmages during practices are more valuable in the evaluation process.

  10. These are some interesting comments by Shanahan regarding Jimmy G. Best 49ers QB since Steve Young and primary reason for moving on was the salary cap???!?

“I’ve seen how hard it is to get there. And how hard it is to try and continue to get there. There’s so many decisions that go into it. Jimmy has played here, in my personal opinion, better than any quarterback since Steve Young. Jimmy did some unbelievable things here. Look at his record, and look how close we got.

So the decision on that isn’t anything against Jimmy. But you gotta make tough decisions in this business. The more you learn about salary cap. The more you learn about how to keep ahold of your players. I thought Jimmy played great during that Super Bowl year. But I also know how good of a team we had.

They were young, and it gets harder and harder to keep these guys. Going forward, we realized how hard it would be to keep Deebo, and sign guys like Fred [Warner], like [George] Kittle. We know we’re going to end up paying [Nick] Bosa a lot of money.

So you look at all that stuff, and getting a guy on a rookie quarterback was a big part of that. And I love that we’re giving a good team to Trey, so he doesn’t have to do that on his own. Just like I didn’t believe Jimmy had to. You try to build a team to where it’s not just about the quarterback.

You always want to build that team to have a chance. If you can get the right guy under center with the right team, they don’t have to be one of the best of all time. But you definitely want them to have the ability to try and get there.”

    1. Not that it matters but I agree with Shanny. I liked Jimmy G better than Garcia or Kaepernick.

    2. That part of his comment didn't surprise me, it was the salary cap part. So if Lance does well and commands $40 million per year in a few years, then what? I guess they might change their model at that time with probably Kittle and Warner close to retirement as well as Armstead (but not Bosa). Pay more for the QB then, like KC, and work the other guys around him.

    3. Cubus, I think if Lance doesn't prove to be moving towards being one of those "top 5-8" guys Shanahan keeps talking about, he probably gets a similar treatment to JG if he is asking to be on top tier money.

    4. Cubus, I agree the model will change if it turns out that Lance is the one they've been looking for.

  11. Not good, but it could be worse:
49ers expect Charvarius Ward to miss next two weeks or so......
    * The 49ers signed former Saints CB Ken Crawley on Wednesday and it looks like part of the reason for his addition is the expected absence of Charvarius Ward for the next couple of weeks.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that prognosis for Ward during an appearance on KNBR. He added that the current thinking is that Ward will be ready to play by the start of the regular season.
“He had a little setback here with a muscle strain, so he’ll be out here for the next probably two weeks or so,” Shanahan said.

  14. SOMETHING I OBSERVED DUING THE 9ERS TRAINING CAMP THAT TO ME, IS A RED FLAG! * If the 9ers are going to win games this year, they'll need to keep Lance healthy! The number of designated runs between the tackles he's run the past few practices is of concern to me, considering how he suffered a knee injury in a loss at Arizona last season.
While I understand his mobility is an asset, calling designated runs between the tackles for him could be detrimental to his health?
The 9ers stated reason for replacing JG was because of his lack of "AVAILABILITY!"

    1. Winning comes first, GEEP. Kyle Shanahan is most concerned about giving his team the best chance to win early on, as Trey develops as a pocket passer.

Besides, most QB injuries occur within the pocket. Trey stands a better chance at getting hurt by a blindside hit in the pocket (knock on wood), than he does as a runner, IMO. And I feel like Trey's duel threat ability is why he was a better QB to draft than Mac Jones.

If Kyle wanted a pure pocket passer, he should have taken Mac Jones, though I sure am glad he didn't!

    2. Jimmy's worst injury occurred on the run.

    3. Jimmy's always injured!

      Delete
    4. In fact, let me rephrase that:

Jimmy Garoppolo is ALWAYS hurt, and he's a pure pocket passer who rarely leaves the pocket.

      I rest my case.

      Delete
    5. Plus, let me remind you eMJay - Jimmy tore his ACL on a NON-CONTACT play! That injury could have just as easily occurred behind the line of scrimmage, like all of Jimmy's other injuries, so your argument holds no weight.

      Delete
    6. Jimmys not always hurt. or injured, he's a football player and all of them play through some sort of discomfort or are banged up during the season.

His torn ACL was when he was running, was it not?! And how in the world are you calling this non-contact?? His mentality is to hit others, its his nature and one of the things fans love about the guy.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaFPFCAM-qs

His injury history is all of 6 injuries, 5 since joining SF. ACL, High Ankle Sprain in 2020 (never fully recovered from Jets game, reaggravated vs Sea), Calf Strain vs Seattle, Thumb Fracture & Torn Ligament vs Tenn and Shoulder vs Dallas (trying to protect injured thumb) all in 2021.

Ironic you say he's always injured yet the season with his most injuries he also lead the team to the NFC Champ playing thru the thumb injuries and shoulder injury.

Still doesn't take away from the fact that Jimmy's worst injury was when he was out of the pocket running.

Also Trey's knee injury last year (he also had a thumb injury so maybe he's always hurt??) was in the game when he ran the ball 16 times.

Seems like running and being out of the pocket has resulted in injuries to both QBs.

Do you remember another Shanny QB who hurt himself running, RG3?

  17. Cleveland.com Browns beat reporter, Mary Kay Cabot, a finalist for Bill Nunn Jr. Award presented by Pro Football Writers of America, reported the Browns are open to acquiring Jimmy Garoppolo if Watson is suspended for more than six games!
Which raises the question, at least in my mind, Does she know what
she's talking about, or is it just CLICK BAIT? But If she's correct, and Deshaun Watson’s suspension extends beyond six games, her story could win her the Bill Nunn Jr. Award?
I'm curious what the rest of you on the blog think?

    1. I've always believed it was the Browns the whole time. They had to have an idea as to what Goodell had in mind for Watson before signing him.

      Delete
    2. Watson is probably going to be suspended for the year. JG is way better than Brissett. At this point I don't see anyone trading for JG as they are waiting for his release. Don't count the Hawks out either.

      Delete
    3. The problem is still the same - that Jimmy is due to get paid a lot more than teams are willing to pay these days for a 1-year bridge QB who will have missed most of the preseason. Jimmy's contract, along with the shoulder surgery, has derailed any hope the Niners had of trading him. And another obvious sign of what's happening with Jimmy's sour "trade market" is today's leak about how the 49ers were baffled with the fact that Jimmy ghosted the 49ers FO just as soon as he signed his blockbuster deal in Feb of 2018. These kinds of stories don't leak if you are still holding out hope of a trade. Not only that, just last week the 49ers also leaked the fact that they plan on releasing Jimmy at the end of the month, which is another tell-tell sign of where things stand with Jimmy's trade market. It seems crystal clear now that, even if the Browns decide to go after Jimmy, they will likely expect the 49ers to take on part of the final year on Jimmy's contract, which is something the 49ers don't seem willing to do, if for no other reason than not to do Jimmy any favors at this point.

The 49ers like Jimmy, and appreciate a lot of what he did at QB during his tenure, but it's clear that they aren't particularly happy with the way Jimmy has handled this off-season.

  18. Just heard that Watson approached the league with a pre-emptive counteroffer of an 8 game suspension and paying 5M in fines.

Dude knows he's gone for the year so he's trying to see if the NFL is willing to negotiate, but 8 games is not enough and he has not shown any contrition or acceptance of his part in this.

Have to agree....After the length of the suspension was strongly criticized by both the media and the fans, Goodell being good politician, knew he needed to push for a longer suspension but didn't want to be one to make it!
IMO, he hand picked former NJ AG Peter C. Harvey so he
could claim it was Harvey's decision, not his. He washed his hands of the decision and won't have answer questions or defend Harvey's decision.
Also, Not wanting to get into any questions about the the owners actions, Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam had little to say, other than “We’ll respect and honor the process!”
