Sermon On The Outs?

And seeing the multitudes at the running back position entering training camp; Shanny's chosen one, Elijah Mitchell, 2021 3rd Round pick, Trey Sermon, 2022 3rd Round Pick, Tyrion Davis-Price, veteran, Jeff Wilson, veteran, JaMycal Hasty, UDFA, Jordan Mason, practice squad, Brian Hill, and one or two camp invites. From my perspective, Trey Sermon will be in a battle to earn that 3rd running back rotation over, Wilson, Hasty, and Mason. Drafting TDP with the first of their two 3rd round picks indicates disappointment from the coaches regarding Sermon's rookie campaign, and perhaps a little bearish on his future here in this offense. Could he be a prime trading candidate at the end of training camp. Seems like the kid has a tough hill to climb. Will he be Trey Sermon on the mount, or Trey Sermon on the outs?

  1. Yeah, as soon as the pick was made it felt like a replacement for Sermon, not a complement. He quickly fell down the pecking order last year - there was clearly something he was or wasn't doing the team wasn't happy with (my guess, decisiveness to the hole, as he often looked slow to react and laboured when he played).

But I'm also sure Sermon will be given the offseason program and training camp to prove he has worked on whatever deficiencies the team identified and deserves a role.

    1. I wonder if they will try and get Danny Gray involved on some jet sweeps to provide that element...?

      Delete
    2. While I anticipate Deebo's plays from the backfield will be greatly reduced, I hope they don't eliminate them completely. Getting those type of plays from a platoon of guys is a more sustainable endeavor.

      Delete
    3. Wouldn't it make more sense to use Ray Ray McCloud to provide that element on sweeps? He's fast, and he did it with the Steelers. Ray Ray doesn't have Danny Gray's top end speed, but Gray needs to spend as much time learning the route tree as possible in his first season, IMO, because he's limited in that area.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous, I fully anticipate Ray Ray being part of that "platoon" of guys.

      Delete
    5. But Ray Ray will be the 5th WR (at best). Bringing him into the game basically signals to the other team your intentions. And if its just a decoy you're taking away 1 of 11, eventually d's will pick up on it and ignore the guy.

Thats why Deebo is so impactful, you don't need to change your offense players, they can still run a 21 offense with him in the game, so the defense stays in their base (typically 4-3) and then you move him inside or move a rb out, move the fb out, bring deebo back in and now how as a defense how do you defend that, do you bring your CB over the middle playing man, do your LBs move with your RB & FB out wide opening up the middle of the field and having them try to cover those guys in space, or do you try to have your LB cover Deebo if he runs a route out of the backfield? Theres so many mismatches by keeping their base personnel and just using Deebo in the backfield as opposed to bringing in your speed guy who only plays ST.

      Delete
    6. I have my suspicions Shanny will have a package of plays for Ray Ray as part of a rotation to keep Deebo fresh throughout the season.

      Delete
  3. I'll certainly miss that element if they don't do something. It was always exciting to watch Mostert/Breida break a run. Last year it was Deebo, but I suspect he won't be doing much of that anymore.

I have heard that the #49ers’ staff has been continually underwhelmed by Trey Lance …

    1. Strange time to be posting that by Lombardo, given the 49ers staff probably hasn't seen him practice since the end of last season. Good way to get some clicks I guess.

Lombardo used to cover the Eagles... wonder if his source is Scangarello... and that is why Scangarello is a former 49ers employee. There were rumours that not all of the 49ers staff were on board with the selection.

It's funny how conflicting some reports are. Not long ago Jay Glazer was talking about how he's heard the 49ers staff are enamoured with Lance and his development over the 2022 season.

      Delete
    2. Yep, the timing is suspect. All we've heard up to this point was positive news with experience as his main adversary.

      Delete
    3. Even if he's been "underwhelming", its still just May, he's still just 21.

He either gets better to expectation level by/during TC, or Jimmy stays and Trey gets spot playing time.

Trey is 21(will be 22 at start of season), he's basically the age of most seniors in college. If he's to be the future then he'll be in SF til he's 38 so he's got another 16 years ahead of him.

One slower offeseason (if true) is nothing to worry about.

  8. Adam Peters on Tyrion Davis-Price, RB, third round, No. 93

For the first time in the Shanahan-Lynch era, the 49ers couldn’t lean on running backs coach Bobby Turner, who is famously thorough when it comes to evaluating runners. Turner is recovering from hip surgery and will not coach this season.

Instead, the team leaned on Turner’s replacement, Anthony Lynn, on scout Warren Ball, who cross-checks the running backs, and on director of player personnel Ran Carthon, a former NFL running back.

The 49ers hosted a lot of tailbacks in the run-up to the draft. What stood out with Davis-Price, Peters said, is that he’s a big man “with little man’s feet.”

“He’s extremely flexible in his lower body and he’s very fast and explosive,” he said. “And then the way he finished runs is really, to me, reminiscent of Jeff Wilson — the way he runs through people. We call it ‘same shoulder, same foot.’ You see it a number of times on tape where he runs guys over and keeps going.”

Davis-Price played at 229 pounds last season, making him one of the biggest runners in the draft. Peters said he also had one of the top five GPS speeds among running backs in the draft, a rate he reached during LSU’s Nov. 6 game against Alabama.

Davis-Price had 104 yards on 23 carries that day, and Peters said the running back reached his top speed late in the contest, which is when Davis-Price was at his best.

“They hand it off and he’s coming right off the tight end’s rear end, and there’s a safety filling right in there,” Peters said. “And you can really see, one, how agile he is — being able to cut right off (the safety). And, two, you see the burst and the acceleration to run away from him. Now, he ended up getting caught inside the 10-(yard line). But that short burst right there, for a man that big, was really impressive.”

  9. Back in the pre-Walsh day's the game was a running game. For the most part players were big and slow. Along comes Walsh and he changes the game using the short passing game, putting the ball in player's hand. Short passes consisting of slants and outs coupled with passes behind the line of scrimmage (the stuff people hate today) was the meat and potatoes. The passes were so short they were considered long handoffs. Using speed and elusiveness running sweeps with Wyndell Tyler, Craig up the middle, the offense was brilliant for the fact that his offense was smaller and faster while the opposition was still big and slow.

I say all that as I have read comments from Scooter and others noting the change in Shanny's backfield, Someone called it bully ball. The Niners are once again making a change in how football is played. One of the differences between the large players of today than of yesteryear they are faster and far more athletic.

    Bully-ball I like it.

      Delete
    3. These two 3rd round picks may have a purpose, and that's to make life easier for Deebo. Gray should open up the middle of the field for Deebo and Aiyuk, while TDP takes some of Deebo's carries he had last year in 3rd and short situations.

      Delete
    4. Yeah, razor, you know that is probably what gives me pause on the two third rounders, tbh. I outlined how the team stuck to BPA... but with those two picks I think that may not necessarily be the case and instead they focused on filling specific roles they wanted filled on offense. TDP to provide a power runner similar to what Deebo gives them from the backfield (and thereby reduce the need to use Deebo for that role) and Gray to fill the field stretcher role they've been lacking since Goodwin. While I wouldn't call them "needs", they felt like luxury picks designed to fill specific purposes rather than just taking the BPA like they seemed to do more on day 3.

      Delete
    5. They put themselves in a position to be able to do that through their team building model. The foundation is strong enough to warrant risking a reach here and a reach there in the spirit of placating an upset superstar they're trying to lock up for the next 3 years.

Razor, getting cute like that is how teams go from good to mediocre over time. But if they keep hitting on a couple of day 3 picks each year it won't matter. End of the day it doesn't matter where you find talent, just that you find it.

DEFCON 5 = Fadeout. It's the lowest state of readiness!

Not only did the 49ers handle it in textbook fashion, but it just might have been the best thing that could have happened to the team this offseason. Deebo was getting a little too full of himself overestimating his value, and now not only are the 49ers looking like they handled things professionally, but they also look like they were spot on in the way they projected his value.

I was not a huge fan of either of their first 2 picks but feel that if you include their UDFA's (which I normally hate doing) I think they added several players that could eventually start.
I could see as many as many as 5 players contributing right away in some small fashion.
    Jackson - Situational Pass Rusher
    Danny Gray wr 4,
Burford OG or RT should Mike not be able to go.
    Womack - Starting Nickle
TDP - RB2? (not that I expect him to be good)
West - Starting C should Mack not return.

Additionally, I could see Gemmel eventually taking a starting roll if a few of our LB's are allowed to walk or are traded next year.
Poe is intriguing as a backup that could be brought in occasionally on short yardage situations. And Taysir Mack, looks like he could provide insurance should Jennings go down or leave.

I don't see a ton of high end potential with the exception of Jackson but I think they might have added several quality players to the roster.

Hiding behind supposedly information from top executives and inside 49ers people that seem to never exist is unprofessional and like Florio, sullies they’re writing integrity. And btw, if such a story was in fact leaked out from the 49ers inner-circle that person should be found and fired immediately. 22. The talent is there for the 49ers to have success in 2022. But there is still a question in terms of the QB position. With Jimmy G, the question was can he stay healthy and can he win a Superbowl.
Now, with Trey, the burning question will be is he ready?

We will find out this upcoming season. But while we were confident that a healthy JG could get us to the post season, we don't know at this point if Lance can get us to the playoffs.
What win/loss would Lance need to have to give the Faithful confidence in him going forward?

    1. The 49ers success over the next few seasons will be tied to Lance, understandably. But with a good team around him he should only need to be decent for the team to be competitive.

For mr to feel "confident" moving forward I would want to see the team make the playoffs this year and Lance at least show steady growth and improvement during the season. If not, I couldn't say I was "confident" in the team's success moving forward, though depending on how the season plays out I may or may not still be encouraged for the future. Too many variables to predict on that though.

If the 49ers can garner a post-season game that would be considered a successful year for Trey. But, the Superbowl (imho) is the bar Lance must reach during his play with the team to justify the 49ers draft process.

Personally I feel getting 12-13 wins in his first season starting is a high bar to set for what they need to achieve in the 2022 season to feel "confident" they are on the right track moving forward. And I doubt 12-13 wins is what will be required to make the playoffs from the NFC.

      Delete
    3. If Lance can't surpass Jimmy's record (when healthy) then its too early to make the change. Play him sporadically, in good situations, but if he's not able to get 10+ wins and a deep playoff run then its not time.

      Delete
    4. If you’re asking me I agree with Scooter. 12 wins is a lot to ask of a rookie.
I think 10 wins is about what I would hope for but there are a lot of variables that go into this.
If Mack stays and their are no major injuries to their stars then 10 wins is about what I would hope for.
I expect him to get 4 wins in division. Then there is Atl, Nola, LV, SD, CAR, Chicago, Mia, Wash where you are hoping they will pick up another 5 or 6 and yes you’d love to get TB or KC coming across the country. So overall I think 10 or more wins will be very impressive and 9 wins would keep me hopeful.

    5. Lance has a great team buoying him. He has a great coach. He got to learn for a year while getting his feet wet. He has every athletic trait you could ask for at the position. I’m not a Jimmy hater but their were games that were just rough for him last year that I think Trey might have won. I also think he would have lost to LA and maybe Cincinnati so probably a wash in terms of record.
I expect Trey will be clearly better this year and I’d let Jimmy go too, regardless. Freeing up his cap space and rolling it over would be huge and would make them major contenders if Trey is just Jimmy level good.

    2. I disagree. Lance was nowhere near ready to play early in the season and even against Houston near the end he was inconsistent and played one good quarter. That is to be expected with a kid who didn't play for almost two years but it also brings up another question: The 49ers have a team capable of competing for a SB right now so do the 49ers just throw caution to the wind and go with Lance or do they keep Garoppolo as insurance?

      Delete
    3. Way too expensive insurance policy.

      Delete
    4. I don't think the money should play a roll in it personally. I'm looking at what gives this team the best chance to win a SB right now, not how much cap space we have to roll over. If Trance gets injured or struggles we have no other option on the roster to keep us in contention. The more I think about it the more I would lean toward keeping JG, giving Lance the opportunity to start and know I have options at QB no matter what happens.

    6. At some point the team needs to make the transition to Lance and the season they do that (which will be 2022) their chances of winning the SB aren't great - first time starters rarely win the SB. That's just the reality. But hopefully he is good enough year 1 to make the playoffs.

      Delete
    7. If money is an issue, extend Jimmy so you can bring his cap hit down.

Theres no better time to get a title than 22, if Trey isn't going to put them over the top and get them closer, then its not his time.

    8. Sudfeld isn't insurance he's a boat anchor. As I said there's no option if Lance gets injured or struggles if they dump JG. I also don't buy the idea that they have to just start Lance to get him ready to eventually win. If he's good enough to start he will start, if he's not you still have somebody that has won nearly 70% of his starts ready to step in. I don't believe in throwing away an opportunity to win a SB to save 24 mill against the cap or to force feed a young QB to a team ready to win now. The focus has to be on the present imo.

    9. What if Purdy wins the job? Lmao!

    10. EMJay, JG has had two shots to win a title with a loaded team and not gotten it done. Why should we think a third time will be different? It's time to transition.

Lowering JGs cap hit this year just reduces future cap space.

Keeping JG as an insurance policy not only impacts on what they can do in the future, it will create unnecessary locker room tension and pressure on Lance.

If Lance struggles then that's bad. But they need to find that out at some point, and they need to let him take his lumps. JG is not the future of the franchise.

If Lance gets injured then they are in the same position as most teams that lose their starting QB. Yes, having JG would help in that situation, but its not worth the price for a guy that we know is unlikely to win the SB anyway.

Keeping JG is just a bad idea.

      Delete
    11. Two shots...and didn't win, sounds like Steve Young to me.

A break one way or another is a SB win or another SB trip. You replace JG this year with Trey if Trey gets you to the NFC Champ game. This team is ready to win today, you do not take a step back for the future because you have no idea if this team will be even close in 2 years (or later).

Win now. If JG is the best shot to the SB, he plays. If Trey is a better chance, he plays.

Playing Trey just to play Trey is a bad idea.

      Delete
    12. JG is no Steve Young.

The whole point of taking Lance is that Shanahan doesn't see JG having the talent to consistently have the team competing for SBs. He's already decided that. And he believes Lance does. But he won't know what he has in Lance until he lets him play. And Shanny has to give him rope and let him work through mistakes.

      Delete
    13. Let me put it another way. The 49ers have admitted they have been trying to trade JG (no dah) and that they thought a deal would get done prior to the shoulder surgery.

If they now hold onto JG it isn't because they feel they need an insurance policy nor that they feel Lance needs to compete with JG for the starting job to prove he is ready to play. They'd be doing it because they were unable to find a trade offer they liked. That's not a good reason to keep JG.

The upgrade physically is obvious when comparing Lance to Jimmy, but I think the other big advantage is Lance won't make the same mistake twice let alone 15 times. He's not going to sail balls over the middle that hover there for a LB to pick off.

NOT inspire a lot of confidence in him. Also, lack of strength has always been a problem and his weight at UCLA was like 285 and he's still listed at under 300 lbs. If the 9ers do run an inside zone offense, that could be a problem? But we should get a better read during OTA's & Pre Season.

With all due respect none of these reasons justifies going with a young QB without a safety net imo. The locker room would not be an issue we've already seen that dynamic play out and it was fine. Keeping Garoppolo will not keep Lance from starting if Lance is good enough to win the job. That's the point. Don't hand it to him, make him earn it and if he can do it great, but if he can't we have a guy who has proved he can take this team on a deep playoff run and possibly a SB because again he has done that.

    19. A $24M cap hit for a safety net is not a good idea. The only reason the backup QB should play is if Lance gets hurt. If he struggles, let him struggle and learn through it.

The idea of having Lance on a rookie contract is so they can maintain a strong team for a number of years to come, not just to have a dash at the 2022 season. The 49ers have shown their hand by not going all in during FA this year (good move imo). The window won't shut at the end of 2022 - unless Lance sucks. And they will have a better chance of keeping their team strong by not wasting $24M on a backup QB.

    20. Geep, I believe most of Shanny's center's were at or near 300 lbs.

    21. I'm a little confused about the $24M cap hit. Isn't Jimmy's Jimmy's cap hit just a smidgen under $27M this season ($26,950,000)? Obviously that would be beyond embarrassing, and extremely detrimental to the roster in the short-to-medium term, to carry that kind of cap number for "insurance" purposes. If they simply cut Jimmy, wouldn't they end up saving $25,550,000 against the cap this season ($26,950,000 minus $1,400,000 in dead cap money) all of which could conceivably be carried over to 2023? Jimmy's contract is simply no longer workable if the 49ers want to remain competitive. Could Jimmy take a significant pay cut, and then be allowed to compete for the starting job? Sure, but that would create it's own set of potential problems, not to mention looking desperate and pathetic on Jimmy's part. He's made way too much money to demean himself like that, IMO. Besides, Lance needs to be given a fair opportunity to take over the reigns, and because Jimmy has so much history with this roster, the only way that can happen is if Lance doesn't have Jimmy lurking in the shadows. It's time to play the kid and find out what they have in him.

    22. Assuming he eventually passes a physical and signs somewhere else for $7,000,000, otherwise the savings would be closer to $18M, which is still a ton of money even at that.

    23. My bad. $24M was the cap saving for releasing him last season.
