The NFL draft is now less than a week away and while the 49ers aren't currently scheduled to select a player until day 2 there is plenty of drama leading up to this one with uncertainty around the status of Deebo Samuel and Jimmy Garoppolo.
I'm not really big on doing mock drafts, generally preferring to simply outline the players I like for the 49ers. But for a bit of fun I thought I would go through what I would do over the next week or so if I was in charge of the 49ers.
First and foremost, I would look to resolve the questions around Deebo and JG. With Deebo, nobody other than Deebo's side and the 49ers know where things stand or what the issues are that Deebo currently has. However, if rumours are to be believed, it sounds like he has made it clear he wants out - to the point he has told the team not to bother making an offer. Now that could be because the team and Deebo's agent have discussed potential remuneration and Deebo's side knows the offer that might be tabled is nowhere near what they are wanting, but even so, taking the step to request a trade is never a good sign.
Normally I would say the 49ers don't need to get this sorted until before training camp. And while they don't need to have anything completed until then, the team has to feel confident a deal can be reached before the draft - they don't want to be forced into trading Deebo at a point where they won't be receiving anything in return until 2023. As someone on the outside looking in I don't feel confident such a point can be reached in the next week, so I would be looking to get what I can for Deebo in a trade. And the recent trades for Hill and Adams should be used as a benchmark of the value they may reasonably expect back.
As a recap, the Dolphins gave up 29, 50 and 2023 4th and 6th round picks for Hill. The Raiders traded picks 22 and 53 for Adams. Rumours are the Jets offered 35, 38 and 69 for Hill, which the Chiefs also agreed to but Hill chose the Dolphins. I'd be willing to take pretty much the same deal from the Jets for Deebo - in fact I'd probably get that 69th pick swapped for a 2023 2nd rounder, with a 2022 day 3 pick added (say pick 117) which may require one of the 49ers day 3 picks sent back in return (say a 6th rounder - maybe pick 221).
That takes us to Jimmy G. I would definitely be looking to put closure on this saga by the end of the draft. To the point where I would not be holding out looking to maximise value. The Panthers appear to be the most likely destination, and they don't have many draft picks (and no day 2 picks). I would be suggesting a trade that swaps the Panthers pick 137 for the 49ers pick 172, plus a conditional 4th rounder from the Panthers in 2023 that can rise to as much as a 2nd based on playing time and performance.
There is a complicating factor in this though - the Panthers can't take on his salary as it currently stands and still be under the cap. However, I see a fairly simple solution to this issue, so long as Jimmy G is willing to work with the 49ers and Panthers to facilitate a trade (and to be honest he should be - the Panthers are one of the last options for him to go to and start). The 49ers can convert the bulk of his salary to an option bonus, tack on some voidable years, and set the trigger for the option bonus at some point after the draft and before training camp (giving the Panthers some time to negotiate a longer term deal with him). This way Jimmy G doesn't lose any of the money he is currently owed, his immediate cap hit is reduced by pushing cap hit to later years (due to voidable years), and the 49ers don't need to pay any of it as the bonus isn't due until after he is traded.
I would then be looking to send one or two day 3 picks to the Giants for Kadarius Toney. Let's say pick 134. I wouldn't give up more than a day 3 pick given the risk of taking a former first round pick a team is giving up on after one year, as well as needing to take on his guaranteed salary for 3 years. However, his salary is quite low, so the salary risk isn't that big, and his skillset would be a nice match for Shanahan's scheme. He isn't Deebo, but he brings a high level run after catch ability in his own right. The team would still need to draft a WR high as they can't rely on Toney, but Toney would bring potential first round talent to the WR room. And if the Giants aren't willing to trade at that price, no biggy, there are plenty of WR options in the draft.
After that, the 49ers would have the following picks in 2022 - 35, 38, 61, 93, 105, 117, 137, 187, 220 and 262 - as well as adding the Jets 2nd rounder in 2023 and a conditional 2023 4th from the Panthers that could rise.
With those ten picks, five of which are on day 2, the 49ers have a tonne of flexibility to move up and down the draft board picking up guys they want. Being so close to round one, they can also move up into the back end of round one should they wish to get someone with a fifth year option on their contract. Which, beings as this is about what I would do, is exactly what I would be looking to do, likely using pick 117 (which based on trade value charts should be enough to get to somewhere around pick 29/ 30, which KC owns both of).
I won't go through specific players I think the team should draft, but with a small trade up to the back end of round 1 and pick 38 the 49ers should be in a position to select some very good players at positions of future need, if not necessarily immediate need. There are a number of good safety, edge and WR prospects that are expected to be available around that area, and if one of the top interior OL happened to be available they would certainly be of interest. With so many picks the team could even go a position that appears to be less of a need if the value is too good - for example, if Breece Hall was there at 38 he could be a great pick that brings high end playmaking ability at RB.
With picks 61, 93 and 105 (if they don't need to trade any of those picks to move up from 35 or 38) the team can then add whatever they miss out on at 35 and 38, as well as likely an interior OL and CB (Marcus Jones to play slot CB could be a real option late round 2/ round 3). Day 3 picks can be used to move around the board as needed and fill in depth.
Losing Deebo would obviously be a big blow for the team. But it also presents an opportunity for the team to fill out the roster around the team's other high priced stars, as well as Lance, with a lot of good, young talent.
I do believe Deebo is gone. I believe the trade is already a done deal that will happen on day one of the draft. Deebo is going to the Jets. As far as JG is concerned, I think Washington and Steelers join the Panthers as potential landing spot. If Deebo is gone then you can trade JG at any time for 2023 draft picks which of course is contingent on his arm.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's not currently sounding good between Deebo and the 49ers. And yeah, I think the best the 49ers should be hoping for with JG is some form of conditional 2023 pick, that can rise to what they are hoping for if his play warrants it.
DeleteI should have included the Browns as a potential landing spot for JG.
DeleteBloody brilliant Scooter. Having Aiyuk in their back pocket eases the pain if he's able to make the jump he's expected to this year. The only way I make the trade is if it's an offer I can't refuse and if not, hope it doesn't turn into a Le'veon Bell situation.
ReplyDeleteThanks razor. I don't like the idea of hoping Deebo works with the 49ers for a solution if things have already gotten to a point the media is portraying. If it doesn't work out it would be a big blow to the 2022 season with no immediate returns for trading him, and it would run the risk of making his trade value diminish.
DeleteFor mine it would be either start making some progress this week in negotiations or trade him.
Bad business allowing a player to throw a tantrum and rewarding him by granting his request. Two 1st's and I'll trade him. Anything less and he can pound sand.
DeleteThat's a fair point. But I would hope the majority of players want to stay with the 49ers and be willing to negotiate.
DeleteWhich really begs the question... what happened to make Deebo so unhappy at the situation? If this is just about the 49ers opening stance on money then it should just be a storm in a teacup. And something they can sort out.
That's a good question, Scooter. How did we go from being in coaches office talking ball to a hostage situation so damn fast?
DeleteI think we have the answer, Scooter. It's got to be the guaranteed money. He's demanding what Hill/Diggs got and the 49ers are wise to refuse. It's one of those situations where you can understand both sides position. Going to be a tough negotiation. Deebo was only used in 12% of backfield runs until the final 10 games where it rose to 22%. Most of it due to losing Mostert and the injuries at running back, plus he was really good in that role that created on the fly by Shanny.
DeleteStrange that the team thinks he is worth more in a trade than Adams and Hill, but worth less when it comes to money. Make it make sense...
DeleteHis physical style of play represents additional risk from the 49ers perspective, and Deebo wants to protect himself from himself. Guaranteeing anything near $70 million is a risky endeavor in that regard. Taking a similar style player in Kittle for example, he got $40 million guaranteed. I think that's where we are. I think the most Deebo will get in guaranteed money is around $50 million which seems fair, given he no longer wants backfield carries, and we'll be able to accommodate him because we'll be replacing Mostert with a younger more durable model.
DeleteI can't blame Deebo for his stance if the 49ers aren't willing to pay him like his peers on one hand, but then demand more than his peers returned in a trade. If that's the hold up the 49ers aren't being realistic.
DeleteThat's exactly why it's such a tricky negotiation. I see Deebo's side, however I also see the 49ers side. He has had weight, injury concerns and I know every player gets injured but we're talking an enhanced propensity due to play style. The trade aspect you bring up is an interesting one, but from Lynch's perspective it's a non-starter. You could tell he's very proud of that pick and he's not going to give up unless it's an offer he cannot refuse. I don't blame him one bit. The only blame I put on Deebo is for going public. Bad business.
DeleteI felt the same way about Kittle. If you remember I was very cautious about signing him to big money due to play style as well.
DeleteIn the end the 49ers reset the TE market on Kittle. The disconnect between not being willing to pay Deebo commensurate to his peers but wanting more back in a trade just doesn't sound right to me. Makes me think there is more to it.
DeleteI wonder if they'll keep it in house as part of the final agreement when all the dust settles.
DeleteScooter, when you look at it from the point of view of I can tag you and that will get me two 1st round picks, it sounds better.
DeleteTeams don't usually pay two 1sts when trading for guys that are tagged. It is what is required if the two teams can't agree on compensation, but is really more a starting point of negotiations. I mean, just look at Dee Ford. Tagging him just got the Chiefs a 2nd round pick.
DeleteExactly, two 1st round picks gets the trade phone answered and the conversation started. I would want more. A player or a 2023 5th rounder thrown in.
DeleteWhat non-QB has gotten such a deal?
DeleteIf they want him that bad it's on them. The Niner's don't want to trade him. It's bad business to allow that kind of behavior to hold a franchise hostage and then give in to their demands. That's why the deal has to be unprecedented.
DeleteLet's not forget tho, niners hold all the chips. Deebos under control of them as is for 3 seasons, his 4th and two franchise tag years. Now it never happens that a dude gets franchised twice, especially in a situation as contentious as this appears, but they have him for 3 more years if they want. If he sits out that contract goes on pause, so sitting out 2022 doesn't get him out of SF and why would you give up a year you'll never get back, his value only goes down if he sits, both for his contract and trade value.
ReplyDeleteI really think this is a lot of agent talk and that by September he's under a new deal that looks pretty but isn't nearly the cap hit that others have signed (Niners sign guys to funny money better than anyone else it seems).
Deebo just needs to turn up. There is nothing stipulating he needs to try hard. There is no way Deebo is putting himself through the same sort of punishment as last year without a new contract. And teams will be willing to pay him next year too, even if he doesn't do much in 2022 due to a contract dispute. Saying the 49ers hold all the chips simply isn't accurate.
DeleteFine, they hold 95% of the chips.
DeleteIn your scenario he shows up and plays without an extension, he's definitely getting franchised that off-season and teams are giving up 2 firsts for him (sounds great), but are teams giving 2 firsts for a dude who isn't trying hard? You know they'll be doing their due diligence and hearing he's not trying makes him that less desirable. Yeah a team might think the new situation will change his attitude and effort, but are they willing to gamble 2 firsts and 150M over 4 years on it?
Also, we all know when dudes play cautious they get hurt. Deebo will in a really bad way if he plays this year under his rookie deal and gets hurt. Same situation as above where SF tags him, but no one's giving up 2 for a dude who wasn't playing hard, got hurt and has ridiculous contract expectations.
Hes coming back, they'll get a deal done that's team friendly but also makes it look like deebo got paid. Let's not forget deebo, aj and dk are all under the same agent and so far we know Tenn, according to Deebo, isn't giving AJ over 20M, then no way Deebos getting Tyreek money. What AJ, DK and Deebo need to realize is they haven't put in the years for a Tyreek contract, he's going in year 7 and has put up legit numbers for 5 years, his rookie year he had 6tds and 600 yards as a backup. Devante is going into year 9,and has had 6 legit seasons, they're not 3rd year dudes.
The guy who f-ed all this up was Baalke and his deal for Kirk, he gave a 3rd WR Randy Moss money, never broke 1k and never had more than 6 TDs in 4 seasons and he gets paid like that. This is what Tenn (and maybe SF thru back channels) is telling these guys, Kirk isn't the example he's the outlier, Jax was stupid, they way overpaid for a dude who's going to be released in 3 seasons anyway, we aren't paying 25+ million for 3rd year dudes, prove you can put 5 seasons together then we'll talk.
Next season if the 49ers tag him, are they really going to carry the tag value for a guy that doesn't want to be there? Are they really going to hold put for two firsts in exchange? Who was the last player that was tagged and traded that actually went for two firsts?
DeleteI'm not dismissing a deal being done to keep Deebo, but Deebo isn't playing hard for the 49ers for $4M in 2022. And there isn't really that much the 49ers can do if he is turning up but just going through the motions to see out his deal - that benefits nobody but at the same time I'd bet there are teams out there that would still be willing to pay Deebo handsomely next offseason. So if that is where it is heading both parties are better off moving on now.
As for the WR deals, these guys aren't comparing their next contracts to Kirk. They are comparing them to Hill, Adams and Diggs.
What kind of precedent is it setting if they grant him his request?
Delete“What do the Jets do with the 10th pick? No surprise here, but word in league circles is the Jets, and most specifically Joe Douglas, are all in on using that pick to acquire Deebo Samuel.” —
ReplyDelete@TonyPauline
Gonna have to sweeten the pot, Joe.
The New York Jets are willing to make a blockbuster move to acquire a talented wide receiver. According to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, the team would love to add San Francisco 49ers wide back Deebo Samuel, and are willing to use the No. 10 overall pick to do so.
DeleteAgree Razor, the tenth pick just gets the conversation started.
DeleteInterestingly, whether using the old Jimmy Johnson trade chart or the more recent Rich Hill chart, both the Hill and Adams trades would be worth pretty close to pick #10 straight up (in fact closer to pick 12/13). Picks 35, 38 and 69 combined are also worth around pick 10 (slighly more in fact), which is reportedly what the Jets offered for Hill.
DeleteGiven the strength of this draft is its depth, more so than its elite talents, I would prefer 35, 38 and 69 (or instead of 69, a 2nd next year + 4th this year like I proposed).
Also, I am still concerned the team probably hasn't spent as much time looking at potential top 10 picks this year, increasing the chance to stuff a high pick up.
DeleteThat's a good point Scooter, however the Niners have been known to stuff a high pick with lots of preparation.
DeleteHa! Mahomes anyone?
DeleteWe should demand nothing less than a first round + additional picks otherwise we are getting screwed.
ReplyDeleteJUST A REMINDER:
ReplyDelete* The NYJ made an offer to KC for Tyreek Hill a month ago before He ended up with the Miami Dolphins. The Jets offered the Chiefs their 2Nd RD picks #35, 38 and 3Rd pick #69. They also asked for the Chiefs' pick #103.
Deebo would offer the same WR value to the Jets as Hill, plus his value as a RB and he's 2 years younger.
If the Jets want to ensure they don't miss out on Deebo, they need to make the 49ers an offer the 9ers can’t refuse.
Draft picks #10 and #38 should do it.
I vote to send him.... too much $ at WR w the signings this offseason.. and a cpl of holes to fill (OL namely). TH will be fun- I predict Deebo to the Jets as they are pressured ti keep up w Phins and Bills.
DeleteI think there's also a chance If Carolina doesn't draft a QB with draft pick #6, they'll trade 2023 draft picks to the 9ers for JG?
DeleteIan Rapoport
Delete@RapSheet

The #Panthers are not expected to trade for #Browns QB Baker Mayfield prior to the first round of the NFL Draft, sources say, if they do it at all. Thursday has to play out first, before any other options are considered. Carolina picks No. 6.
If we would receive the 10th pick(+additionel picks ofcourse) for Deebo we could have a legitimate shot to get some impact players like Hamilton.
ReplyDeleteDamn this would be a serious coup 😁
Breer: One GM believes the 49ers want 2 first-rounders for Deebo Samuel.
ReplyDeleteThat's what they better want. Anything less and they can all pound sand. All it takes is that one team but I don't think it happens. I don't think they get that offer and Deebo will remain on the team.
Anyone else see the picture of Mack's locker? Cleared out with a moving box and a trash can. By itself it might not mean squat, but when you're 36 and coming off a romantic wedding in Ireland...I think he's done.
ReplyDeleteDo they bring in a vet, or just go with a rookie?
DeleteGood question. How about both? J.C. Tretter is still available as far as I know. Have no clue what he's looking for.
DeleteWonder if they'll try and do a Trent Williams like trade?
DeleteSure feels like it. Then I anticipate Mack will announce his retirement shortly there after.
DeleteGee... If only SF could have drafted a Center like Creed Humphrey or Josh Meyers last year but alas they were long gone.
DeleteWell at least they got a stud guard in Aaron Banks.
Oh wait :/.
Anyone know what time Lynch's presser is today and just as importantly how I can watch it.
ReplyDeletehttps://fb.watch/cCIWxg0C_5/
DeleteAlready over but you can re-watch.
Thanks, Razor.
DeleteYou're welcome.
DeleteBosa extended.
ReplyDelete"I'm really excited to have a full offseason just to build on what I got to last year," Bosa said after the season. "I wasn't really able to maximize my strength and conditioning stuff with getting my rehab right and stuff. So this year, I'm going to give my knee a lot of time to just chill because I haven't really given it any rest since I got hurt, so it needs some time, then I'm going to get back, and I'm going to get in the best shape of my life for sure. And I was in the best shape of my life last year, so it's going to be another level. I'm excited."
Bosa wants to stack a better year on top of last year. Excellent attitude and work ethic.
DeleteMitchell got his knee cleaned up. Gawd I hope Sermon steps up into a defined role offensively this year. He's running on like new Goodyear's.
ReplyDeleteMitchell also said he plans on adding some weight to around 215. He's not the 4.3s speed guy his pro day suggests - he's the bell cow with sufficient speed to do everything asked of him, without being a breakaway threat.
DeleteCynthia Frelund offered an interesting trade idea for Deebo - the Jets send Elijah Moore, 10 and 35 to the 49ers for him. That's an offer that would definitely get me interested. Moore is going to be very good and would take care of needing to find a replacement for Deebo, freeing up 10 and 35 for other positions.
ReplyDeleteI would not take that deal.
DeleteWhy not?
Delete* "An interesting trade idea for Deebo - the Jets send Elijah Moore, 10 and 35 to the 49ers for him."
DeleteSOLD! Make it happen JL
#10+2023 1st+Moore and it's a deal.
DeleteBased on the old adage that a future pick is worth 1 round less, 35 is probably worth pretty similar to a 2023 1st. I'd be good with either deal.
DeleteI think the sportsbooks have the Jets at 5.5 wins which would be good for the 3rd lowest total in the league. Falcons and Texans being the two they beat out.
DeleteAnalysis for Elijah Moore by Lance Zierlein:
ReplyDeleteUltra-competitive slot target with the talent and mindset to handle a heavy amount of targets and shine in the process. He's not very big, but he's stronger than his measurables might suggest and he's shown a fearlessness to make the catch despite impending punishment. Moore has the short-area quickness to snap off crisp routes underneath for separation and the play speed to challenge over the top as well as work the deep middle. He has soft, sure hands and above-average ball skills with a great feel for spatial awareness to hit the sweet spots when working against zone. While longer, more physical cornerbacks could slow him a little bit in the NFL, his athletic profile and playing demeanor should lead evaluators to believe he will be a very good pro early in his career.
I hope Deebo and his crew know what they're doing because it sounded to me like Lynch has his heels dug in. I think he's willing to go the distance all the way to the franchise tag.
ReplyDeleteThats what it's sounding like.
DeleteNot sure they are thinking that far, but they clearly don't want to lose him and it sounds like they expect to be able to work a deal out. Also sounded like they are a little bewildered and annoyed by the stance Deebo and his agent are taking.
DeleteStrange situation for sure considering Deebo seemed to be really happy with his role and how the season played out for him. Wading through all the rumors/reports and BS, it doesn't seem like much negotiating if any has taken place. It seems like Deebo has decided he doesn't want to play in SF for whatever reason and doesn't even want to discuss an extension. If that is the case they really have no alterative but to trade him or play hard ball and force him to play or retire(not for good obviously but he may threaten it). No obvious answer or resolution to this.
DeleteYeah, I can't imagine this is really about money as that would be something you can negotiate over, and as Lynch outlined, the 49ers have a history of being willing to give record breaking deals to their players. There must be something else going on that has soured Deebo on playing for the 49ers.
DeletePure speculation on my part, but I do wonder if it has something to do with Deebo's time down in Miami where he spent some time with Mike McDaniel. It's well known Deebo and McDaniel get along really well.
But Miami doesn't have the capital to get him. They have no 1st's this year (used that on Hill) so unless they trade a dude for a high first, which they then flip to SF, its not happening there so pout all he wants he's not going to Miami.
DeleteThat's not what I meant. I am wondering if things were said that made Deebo distrust the 49ers organization.
DeleteThis thing is already getting out of hand,if i analyse Deebo his actions than we need some big time luck for him to stay.
ReplyDeleteBut i think he cant be convinced so it would be in out franchise best interest to grant his wish and give him a trade but that protects our investment to.
And everyone stays friend and JL keeps our franchise positieve.
We may not know why Deebo wants to be traded, but Lynch made it clear he doesn't intend to meet his request....
ReplyDeleteAre either Lynch, or Deebo, posturing? Who knows, but if another NFL team wants to trade for Deebo, it sounds like it will take a kings ransom to move the 9er FO to trade him.

What I’m hearing: Despite Lynch saying he “can’t ever imagine” trading Deebo, I think they could for right price. #Jets still lurking … Ickey, Sauce and Jermaine Johnson getting loudest buzz at 4. All the speculation about JJ is true; he’s in mix. Jets seem open to any position
Razor
DeleteAgreed! But the question left to be answered is, what does Deebo want? What constitutes a Kings ransom and how much are the 9ers, or any NFL team, willing to pay Deebo if he does not want to be used as a RB? So what is his market value and
will the 9ers willing to play hard ball with Deebo, including their using the franchise tag on him, for the 2023 season?
The 9ers hold all the cards, but do they want the drama and distraction if Deebo holds out, the JG QB situation, a new QB taking over and all the new coaches the 9ers have hired for the 2022 season? TBD!
I can't see the 9ers turning down the Jets first Rd picks #4 and #10, but then I don't expect the Jets to make that offer either.
Maybe Scooter is right, the Jets send Elijah Moore, #10 and #35 to the 49ers for Deebo?
The one thing we know for a FACT is, the 9er FO has some difficult decisions to make.
And whichever decision they make they will be taking a risk.
DeleteScooter
DeleteYes, I agree. the 9ers will be "taking a risk whichever decision they make. But a "risk" that has yet to be throughly articulated is how NFL teams view constructing a winning team by how they appropriate their capitol. A) By drafting players with their rookie salaries, or B) By signing NFL veterans with the highest skills, and salaries that make them the highest paid player at their position(s).
This is an article that articulates the philosophical argument of how a winning NFL teams should be constructed, much better than I'm capable of....

LB Azeez Al-Shaair signs one-year deal with 49ers

"I know this: The feeling inside the league is the Niners are listening to offers for Deebo Samuel, and the Jets are going to put together such a massive package for Deebo Samuel that the Niners are not going to be able to turn away," Pauline told Trey Wingo on Tuesday (h/t TheSFNiners). "Everyone says that Kyle Shanahan would like to keep Deebo Samuel, but again, the feeling is what the Jets will offer—as they said in The Godfather—the Jets are going to make the Niners an offer they can't refuse.
ReplyDeleteYikes! Must admit, until now I didn't really think the 49ers would trade him, just that it might be the best option. But with that report from Pauline, who is usually pretty plugged in... now I do.
DeleteI think it's time to move on from Deebo he has become bigger than the team. I will be interested to know the why"s.
DeleteYep, I've been saying that's what it would take. Come big or don't come.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWith the Jets rumoured to be the team in on Deebo, as well as rumoured to be ready to move on from Becton... and with question marks over McGlinchey's recovery... makes me wonder if Becton could be part of any trade package.
ReplyDeleteThere's question marks about McGs recovery... besides the standard recovery concerns? Don't let Gnat Cohns trolling get to you. McGs at weight, hes working on s&c and I'm positive he'll be ready to go training camp day 1 without issue.
DeleteNow that doesn't change the fact that deebo is still possiblity to get traded, just need to make sure the return is multiple picks and a 1st this year minimum.
Cant Imagine it that we would be interested in a trade with Becton involved .
DeleteEMJay, I barely read what Grant has to say these days, but looks like you told on yourself 🤣
DeleteMcG's injury is the same one that ended Richburg's career. Glad you are positive he'll be ready, but I am not yet willing to accept at face value the party line Lynch and McG are giving.
"I still tend to think the 49ers won't trade Samuel, and yet, NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco is saying the rift between the 49ers and Samuel has become personal."
ReplyDeletecomes from Marc Adams
Sounds like its all on Deebo's side. Warner has nothing but good things to say about SF negotiation. Kittle, while there was frustration at the start, ended well. TW didn't seem to have problems. The list goes on and on. Not sure what Deebo's perceived slight is but damn if he's that thin skinned about it makes you wonder if he's a TO in the making. Now TO is one of my fav niners and his talent was undeniable, but for all his stats he only ever made the SB once and it was an L (no fault of his own) so if Deebo goes away and goes the way of TO it's really not a big loss as long as SF makes smart decisions and doesn't implode like 2004 (which they won't, this isn't Erickson/Donahue here ((RIP)).
DeleteGoing to be interesting tomorrow. Lynch says its going to be boring, I am thinking with the 10th pick the Niners trade back.
DeleteI told you it would take two 1st's to get Deebo:
ReplyDelete"They're asking for two number ones," Lombardi said on The Morning Roast. "If they're asking for two number ones, that means you've got to give them two number ones, and then you've got to pay him 22, 23, 24 million [dollars] a year."
Glad to see Lynch and I are of like minds on this one.
The Jets can handle that.
DeleteI would expect them to ask for nothing less considering they don't want to trade him. The only way you change your mind is if the compensation forces you to. If someone gave them two firsts then I'd be fine with saying goodbye to Deebo but I still can't believe a team would do that with how many WR's are coming out of the draft now and the cost to sign Deebo long term.
DeleteExactly Notanexpert.
Delete"As we’ve said repeatedly (and will nevertheless repeat), the 49ers should insist on complete secrecy until the pick they’ll be acquiring is on the clock. This avoids any possibility that the 49ers would be jumped if, for example, they end up with the 10th overall pick before the draft starts.
ReplyDeleteCimini also suggests that the final decision may hinge on the players who are taken before the Jets are on the clock. And that may indeed be a factor. At this point, the 49ers need to think of the trade as a swap for a player not a draft pick. Once the first nine selections are made, the 49ers will know who they can get."
I would assume trading back would work if the 10 pick was acquired.
Word on the street is the Texans are looking to move up.

DeleteI'm curious, with their first round #3 draft pick and #13, why the Texans would want to trade up to #2, and for who? With the #3 pick, If they want a QB, they should have their pick. The Panthers have QB Trevor Lawrence, so they likely won't draft one? But then Baalke's their GM, so who knows what he'll do?
The Lions can't afford to cut Goff, and their biggest needs are an EDGE rusher and a Safety, so that should leave the Texans their choice of QB draft picks.
If Houston decides to go with offense, Alabama OT/G Evan Neal or North Carolina State OT Ikem Ekwonu could join Tunsil and improve a line that allowed 44 sacks last season?
From what I remember they want to move up from #13, and I'd assume it's a player in the top ten; possibly leap frogging a team they may feel has too much interest in.
DeleteJeesh, there's 8 teams with 2 first round picks. That's a lot of teams to worry about jumping ahead.
DeleteWhile we may not know if the 9ers will trade Deebo, these are the eight teams with two draft picks in the first round
ReplyDeleteDetroit Lions: No. 2, No. 32
Houston Texans: No. 3, No. 13
New York Giants: No. 5, No. 7
New York Jets: No. 4, No. 10
Philadelphia Eagles: No. 15, No. 18
New Orleans Saints: No. 16, No. 19
Green Bay Packers: No. 22, No. 28
Kansas City Chiefs: No. 29, No. 30
Welcome to draft day folks! It's early morning in Brisbane and I'm about to head off for breakfast and to buy myself some draft day snacks. When I get back in about an hour/ 1.5 hours I will start a draft day live blog where I hope people will follow along on what could either be a very quiet or very busy day 1 for the 49ers depending on what happens with Deebo. Despite the recent rumours the teams may be holding ofg until pick 10 is on the board, my gut tells me that if nothing is done yet then it isn't happening.
ReplyDeleteToo much shit to do in too little time for a trade like that. I agree. Not happening.
DeleteHaving said that, we'll need to stay tuned until the last pick because there's 8 teams with double 1st rounders, including Kansas City.
DeleteHammers is seeing some Jimmy action getting the Niners into the first round. That would be awesome
DeleteHell yea!

DeleteYea, I read what Jack wrote! * Does anyone believe the Steelers will trade their draft pick #20 to the 9ers for JG? Even if the 9ers eat $10 mil of JG's 2022 salary? And even if that did happen, where are the 9ers going to get the ~$40 to $45 Mil to extend Deebo and Bosa?
* While I'd be excited to see the 9ers draft Iowa Center, Tyler Linderbaum, Spotrac shows the 9ers are currently ~$9 Mil under the salary cap, not enough (~$10 MIL), to sign their draft picks, unless they add ~$6.5, by extending J. Ward.
Jets receive: Deebo Samuel
ReplyDelete49ers receive: 1st-round pick (10), 2nd-round pick (38) & 2023 3rd-rounder
Cowherd's proposal. I wouldn't even answer the phone for that trade. Gonna take two 1st rounders to get the phone answered.

ReplyDeleteSo far, I've read there are 5 teams interested in trading for Deebo:
Texans, Jets, Eagles, GB and KC..... Lets hope they get into a bidding war and the 9ers get a first, plus a third or 4th Rd pick this year. Also, a first Rd pick in 2023 and a fifth or sixth Rd pick.
Hi folks, I have now started a "live" blog in a new post.
