Hightower Moves On

Who ya got taking over the special teams duties? Bisaccia is headed to Green Bay, but what about Joe Judge?

    1. This might be more on Kyle than on Hightower. It does not appear to be priority.

Harbaugh used starters on Special Teams and had specialists on his roster so it was a priority for him, but I get the feeling with Kyle it's just a "don't lose the game" thing. That would affect any special teams coach.

  3. 49ers seem to have a pretty good relationship with Iowa. I wonder if LeVar Woods could be an option?

  4. Apparently the Dolphins are expected to hire McDaniel as HC. Thus why the signing of Lynn was so important.

As mentioned in the previous thread, would love the team to then look at Pep Hamilton to come in as the OC/ passing game coordinator/ QB coach.

    3. Nice little operation the Niners got going on. Reminds me of the Patriots when they use to cycle through players, receiving comp picks.

    4. Yep. That's the nice side benefit of actually being a team that values diversity and hiring the best people for the job regardless of race/ gender.

  6. I'm happy for McDaniel, of course, but concerned it could develop into a train wreck for him, what with the owner, the law suit, and filling Flores' shoes. I hope he didn't get the job because he's a minority and no other minority wanted it.

    3. They make that happen and we'll take, Tyler Linderbaum, Center, Iowa.

  10. Niners already had two 3rd round compensatory picks, IIRC -- one for the second Saleh pick and one for the Mayhew pick. I believe NFL only allows cashing in of one such compensatory pick per draft. So after taking the two <McDaniel picks into account, would the Niners have another three compensatory third round picks after this upcoming draft?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. From what I have been seeing, sounds like despite getting 3rd round picks in 2021, 2022 and 2023 last year for Saleh/ Mayhew, the 49ers will get 3rd round comp picks this year and next for McDaniel (rather than getting them in later years).

Should note that the 3rd they received for this year for Saleh has already been traded away though, to get Lance, so they will still only have the one 3rd round comp pick in 2022.

    2. Johnson will be long gone by round 2. Enagbare could still be on the board due to his slow run reads. Kinda the opposite of Johnson.

    3. "Johnson will be long gone by round 2." yep, I agree. As will Linderbaum, who's listed by
      CBSSPORTS.COM at pick #4.
We'll have to wait and see what Enagbare's 40 time is at the Combine. His 40 time is listed at 4.78s now and he's pick #26 by CBSSPORTS.COM
Unless we get a 1st round pick for JG, which I doubt, we'll settle for a mid to late 2nd Rd pick.

    4. I'm hoping Linderbaum's weight will scare teams off in round 1. But probably won't.

      Delete
    5. Linderbaum should be there between 20 and 28 due to the center position not being valued by as many teams.

      Delete
    6. I like Linderbaum but barring a medical issue I cant see any way he slips into a tradable range for SF. Given SF's needs I wouldn't be willing to give what it would take to move up from the bottom of the second to the bottom of the first. This is partly why I was so upset when SF took Banks over Humphrey and Meyers, as both would have been cheaper players at a critical position in Kyle's offense.
Enagbare, Mafe, Ebiketie, Sanders and Bonitto are all intriguing names at edge who could be there for SF.

"Check out some of his tape, Geep."
Tapes watched: S. Florida, Duke, Miami, & Virginia.
The first thing I noticed: Mason is faster than his 4.55s 40 would suggest. He's a straight-ahead power RB who's also elusiveness and strong, with great vision and balance. Majority of Mason's carries were between the tackles. (Both A and B gaps).
When he did run outside zone, he showed patience and set up his blocker(s) but was caught by a defender and ran thru the would be tackler. (can he do that in the NFL)?
Question to be answered: Can he prove to be a capable receiver, after only 15 receptions at Georgia Tech?
      * After being injured early in 2020, Mason lost the starter job (the next two seasons), to freshman Jahmyr Gibbs an outside zone RB with next-level acceleration to reach top speed. I believe Mason has a future in the NFL, but in my mind it raises the question. Would Mason fit KS outside zone offensive scheme?

    8. Yah, that's a fair breakdown. He'd be one of those guys I'd consider when you're talking 6th round.

    9. Haven't looked at him, but from what you just described he sounds like more of an Eli Mitchell type RB.

"Haven't looked at him, but from what you just described he sounds like more of an Eli Mitchell type RB" Really?? I wouldn't describe Eli Mitchel as a RB with
a 4.55 40. Mitchell’s speed is elite, as he reportedly clocked a 4.32 to 4.38 40-yard dash at his pro day on March 29, depending on whose stopwatch you used.
Is Eli Mitchell a straight ahead power runner that runs between the tackles VS outside zone?
Mitchel's also a descent receiver VS Mason with 15 receptions at Georgia Tech?

      Delete
    12. Mitchell isn't that fast on the field. It is also well documented he dropped weight for his pro day, and put weight back on for the season.

I mean, just watch him play. He doesn't run away from people. He isn't slow, but he isn't fast either.

      Delete
    13. Mitchell is a solid dependable back but he doesn't offer much in the way of home run ability. If it's because his play speed is slower or his eyes aren't quick enough I am not sure. I always get the feeling that he gets more yards than are there when its not blocked up well due to his grit and determination but leaves a lot of yards on the table when it is blocked up well.
I don't even hate the idea of going for a rb a littler higher, if they deem Mostert not salvageable. Someone like maybe James Cook around pick 100... or Ford is not a bad pick a bit later. I like Zonovan Knight as a possible UDFA. or 7th rounder as well.

      Delete
    14. Sermon may benefit from the Lynn hire. I think he runs more power running plays.

      Delete
    15. Razor
I agree with you, Lynn will likely use some power run plays. I would also add, that Sermon should be more effective with Lance, a mobile quarterback under center, and the threat that poses to any defense.

What do you think the odds are of RB Raheem Mostert following McDaniel to Miami?

      Delete
    17. Geep,

I think its a solid possibility, though I think he stays if SF can match the offer. He shouldn't cost much. Whoever signs him should give him an incentive laden contract... very little should be guaranteed.

      Delete
  16. Jed would do well to extend both Kyle and John for the next 6 years.

Looking at the NFC picture, this team has the opportunity to dominate the NFC along with the McVay-Snead team (the latter may experience the downside of the gamble on mortgaging their draft future).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmmm, they were both extended just a year and a half ago. Shanahan is already under contract through 2025, and Lynch through 2024. That's already the next four seasons for KS, and three for Lynch. I don't expect an extension for either any time soon.

  17. Zierlein has Linderbaum falling to #31 in his latest (and admittedly waaaay too early) mock. But I do think that is a possibility, exactly for the reason Zierlein notes - he is undersized relative to what people generally want for the position.

If he was there late 20s/ early 30s, I would sure be tempted if I was the 49ers to go get him. Especially if they can get a 2nd round pick (or better) for JG. He just seems like a perfect fit for Shanahan's offense.

    2. I have been playing around with Thedraftnetworks mock draft machine and PFN's mock draft simulator and I have yet to find a case where either one of them fall to the bottom of the 7th.
While, I don't mind moving up... given the teams cap space, it would behoove the team to fill as many roster spots with rookies as possible, so I wouldn't want to give up to many picks.

    4. Yeah, good find GEEP. He was one I noted out of Senior Bowl reports as well.

End of the day, I feel like OL needs to be a priority for the 49ers this year. They pretty much have all the pieces on offense at the skill positions (though can always use some depth). But we saw in the loss to the Rams how important it is to have an OL capable of winning consistently.

With the return of Tomlinson, Mack and McGlinchey all with some level of uncertainty, for various reasons, adding talent to the OL is a must imo.

RG/LG: ED Ingram LSU: 6'3"X 317, 40 = 5.28s. Fits both power and zone blocking schemes. A mid 4th Rd draft pick with 2nd Rd talent, but has off field issues he'll have to explain at Combine interview(s). (He was suspended for sexual assault 2018 season. Charges dropped prior to 2019 season and was reinstated).

    1. Ingram is a guy I like a lot in the 4th round. He's a solid player with a high floor. If they move on from Tomlinson, he is the type that is technically sound enough to start Day 1. Especially given his experience.

He's young, not a lot of experience, but checks all the boxes for a 4th-5th Rd draft pick. The Combine will verify his athletic ability and possibly help him move up on some
    team draft board?
IMO, If he can afford to stay in school for another year and continue to improve, he'd likely move up from 4th - 5th Rd pick to a late 2nd Rd draft pick (as an OG). If he shows he can also play C, he could be a late 1st Rd pick?

    1) Virginia State DB Will Adams: 6'1" X 186, Took crown for best performance. posted a 10'3" broad jump, 40.5' vertical, 21 reps bench press and a 4.57 40-yard dash.
Adams, a four-year starter at Virginia St., was impressive in the 3-cone drills and fluid in DB drills

    2) Alabama State (RB/slot/K returner) Ezra Gray: 5'9" X 185
had some of the best numbers for offensive players. A 10'3" broad jump (tied Adams for the best of the day). He also posted a 38.5" vertical jump. He didn't run the 40-yard dash, as he's recovering from a slight hamstring tweak, but he looked impressive catching passes and running routes during positional drills.
Gray said he expects to run a 4.2 or 4.3 when he does run the 40-yard dash.

    3) Florida A&M OG Keenan Forbes: 6'3" X 330
Former NFL general manager Scott Pioli's favorite was Forbes, who said ""Loose in his hips, bent well, moved well, changed direction well. He's clearly an OG."
Forbes was named first-team HBCU All-American at RG as a full-time starter at Florida A&M.
