Who You Got?

Trey Lance or Jimmy G, which quarterback you got starting against the Rams? If Jimmy can go, I think his quicker release against the Rams formidable pass rush makes more sense strategically. Realistically, I think Jimmy G will not be able to play next week, and it will be up to Trey Lance to lead us into the playoffs.

Lance was under center for just 12.3% of his snaps in his first start vs. AZ. He was under center 55.6% of the time vs. Texans.

SF now 21-1 when 30 or more rushing attempts under Shanny and 6-0 this season.

  1. Lance and KS both performed better in the second start then they did in the first start. For me it's a tossup on who starts, not particularly happy with either choice for this game. If KS decides to run like he did in the first game, I don't think it matters which QB it is, Niners will win.

    1. It's gonna be interesting to see how the game plan changes if at all from the earlier matchup. McVay knew what was coming and still couldn't stop it.

    2. Seems to me do the same thing till they stop it. We know what it takes to stop it and that 'should' open up the passing game and that is what scares me with both QB's. My hope is they can run the ball regardless of what the Rams do. If the Niners have to pass...'probably' means they are losing.

    3. The Rams offense has sputtered early. We need to take advantage by scoring early. It's gonna be a tight game. My prediction: Robbie Gould kicks he game winner!

  2. This is a silly discussion!

Kyle says Jimmy will play if he's 100% healthy, right?

So why is this even a subject worth debating being that it's medically and physically IMPOSSIBLE for Jimmy to be 100% healthy until he has season ending thumb surgery?

Jimmy isn't playing this week, and in fact, he's almost certainly done playing for the 49ers, so maybe it might make more sense to simply MOVE ON, and start asking what the best game plan might be for Trey Lance?

    Just saying!

    1. “It all depends on how bad the injury is,” Dr. Hay said. “You’ll see these sometimes and it’s a sprain and a little avulsion fragment. And the thumb is basically stable because it wasn’t completely torn off. And the guy’s like, ‘Hey, let’s tape it up and play.’”

The only surefire way to know is if Jimmy practices.

    2. IMO, If the 9ers can run the ball against the Rams defense, score first, control the clock and keep the Stafford off the field, the 9ers should win the game.

Even if JG's thumb allows him to grip the ball, I'd still favor lance to start, as he would force the Rams defense to account for him and also defend the entire field, not just the middle.

My greatest concern is the 9ers secondary is their achilles heel and Stafford can exploit it.

I have to confess, I enjoyed watching Rams Jalen Ramsey punch his own team mate, Taylor Rapp, in the face more than watching Stafford throw 2 picks and a fumble that Baltimore turned into 13 points, including a pick-6 by safety Chuck Clark.
Now, i'm looking forward to the wheels coming off the Lams SB express against the 9ers week 18....lol

  3. I think it will be Lance, and I think Shanahan will change how he attacks the Rams this game. Have to imagine that after getting run all over in their last meeting, and the uncertainty at QB for the 49ers, the Rams will come out looking to stop the run. I expect a pretty heavy dose of play action shot plays early on.

    1. That's what I was thinking as well, Scooter. The 49ers took the Rams soul in the last matchup, and they'll be looking for redemption. Encourage their motivation and go deep. Early and often.

      Delete
    2. Niners can't protect the QB, stick with what got them to this point. Mitchel, Kittle, Samuel, Williams. Control the clock keep our defense and their offense off the field. Turnover free and Niners got this game going away. I doubt seriously Niners can win an aerial battle.

      Delete
    3. Seeing that the Niners took the Rams soul last game, the heart is next.

      Delete
    4. Under, doesn't have to turn into an aerial battle if the defense holds. Catch them off guard with an early lead and as they adjust, employ clock control offense.

      Delete
    5. 100% razor. I'm not suggesting making it an aerial duel. But I strongly suspect the 49ers will look to hit them with some play action deep shots early on this one, not just to try and take advantage of the Rams defending the run aggressively, but also to keep them honest as the game progresses.

But I think that only happens if Lance starts. If its JG, they'll run it with some screens/ quick game mixed in.

    6. "if the defense holds" How well did that work with the Titan's. I do not have the faith in the defense others have I guess.

    7. The 49ers rank fourth in total defense (312.8 yards allowed per game). Surprisingly, they are fifth in pass defense (206.8). They rank ninth against the run (106.0), and on defense have allowed just 3.2 yards per rushing attempt over the past seven games (if we agree to omit the 73-yard run on a fake punt against Seattle).

    8. All bets are off if Ward and the Shark can't play.

    9. I have a feeling the offense as sketchy as it is has a lot to do with the defense's performance. But you know as long as the Niners win I don't care how. This team is so Jeckel and Hyde, not sure if I have ever seen a Niner team like this.

Fake punt to me is special teams.

  7. If Jimmy is well enough to play on Sunday, he's the starter. If he starts but has issues with throwing then bring in Trey. Perhaps, Shanahan starts with JG and brings in Lance in certain packages. If a JG/TL package works against the Rams (if Shanahan goes that route), watch for the same packages in the playoffs.

eMJay your take is ludicrous to let Jimmy start if he's 75%, even Jimmy at 100% in inconsistent what will happen than at 75%?!

    1. As of today, I have not seen an official announcement whether Garoppolo can go or not.
I agree that Jimmy is inconsistent even at 100%, but he's also 5-0 against the Rams and that is my only reason for starting him IF he's good to go on Sunday. JG' 5-0 record breeds more confidence for me then having a rookie start.

  9. I think you run w/ Lance at this point. Jimmy is not 100 percent and he doesn't play well when playing injured. If he were healthy I would go with him due to his ability to get rid of the ball quickly, but when injured his accuracy is ummm not great Bob.
The bigger issue this week will be the covid protocol's and who can go.

I have the Rams winning and niners being eliminated regardless of the starter but hey, I've been wrong often this year, lets hope that holds but I doubt it.

  10. Now I know why Kyle was so stubbornly set on NOT playing Lance this ENTIRE season ....

Because it would become glaringly obvious that Kyle made the wrong, pussy decision at the outset of training camp, in sitting Trey Lance for what would have been an ENTIRE season, DESPITE the fact that the 49ers offense has sputtered in fits and starts all season, while Jimmy continues to make the same rookie mistakes over and over, to go along with his generally inconsistent play, and dink and dunk - 4 yards and a cloud of dust - passing attack!

Not only did Kyle cause the Faithful to suffer unnecessary frustration for large portions of the season, watching Jimmy G singlehandedly handcuff the 49ers offense for the FOURTH straight season, but now the Faithful get to spend the final week of the season worrying if our team is even going to make the playoffs! And in fact if it weren't for Deebo Samuel bailing Jimmy out on multiple occasions, the 49ers would certainly have their 4TH losing season of Kyle's tenure!

What a shame, and what a waste of time and talent!Even if the Niners make the postseason at this stage, the 48ers are faced with the daunting task of being the SIX seed, at best. That's a mark of how terribly this uber-talented 49ers team has UNDERPERFORMED for most of this season.

And the thing is .... fans like me, and we are in the majority, no longer blame Jimmy. Jimmy has been been the ultimate professional in the way that he's handled this from day ONE. It's not Jimmy's fault that Kyle's weak decision SPLIT the 49ers locker room midway thru training camp.

Nope, this screw up is all on Kyle Shanahan, the girly man who coaches like he's afraid of his own shadow, and is more concerned about his own image than he is actually winning games! If that isn't the ultimate paradox, I don't know what is!

    ReplyDelete
  11. At least we are no longer arguing about who is the better quarterback between Jimmy G and Nick Mullens, for crying out loud! The 49ers may suffer another inconsistent season in 2022 as Trey continues to develop, but an underdeveloped Trey Lance is still head and shoulders above the eternal rookie QB – Jimmy Garoppolo - who never learned how to read Linebackers in pass coverage, and who simply REFUSES to attack opposing defenses downfield, through the air!

Goodbye, and good riddance Jimmy G! It's been .... something!

And as they say in my neck of the woods - don't let the door hit you in the a_s on your way out!

  13. "Brian Baldinger saw ‘John Elway-type’ throws from 49ers rookie Trey Lance"

It's safe to say that NFL Media analyst Brian Baldinger was impressed with San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance during Sunday's win over the Houston Texans.

"I thought he was good," Baldinger said Tuesday morning on 95.7 The Game's The Morning Roast when asked about Lance's play from the pocket. "I can't find any glaring mistakes from Trey this past weekend. I thought he saw the field really well, considering he hadn't really played in three months. ... I thought he threw the ball with real touch when he had to. I thought he lasered it when he had to. It's hard to find, really, any criticism."

    2. I don't know how anyone can say that, Razor, with the 49ers being on the verge of potentially missing the playoffs altogether, despite having one of the most talented rosters in the NFC, while also investing 3 first round picks (an a third rounder) and spending a combined $27.56 on the QB position?

This season reeks of failure because, even if the Niners sneak in with a wildcard, they are finishing in THIRD place in their own division. Making it to the Super Bowl via a wildcard is darn near impossible for a WEST COAST team! In fact, for all of the talk about a rookie QB having never won a Super Bowl, I am pretty sure that it's also true that a West Coast team has ever won a Super Bowl via a Wildcard birth either, so how can this been seen as a successful season, when the whole idea of not starting a rookie QB was to give them the best chance to win a Super Bowl?

That makes no sense, Razor. Sorry.

    5. This is no where near one of the most talented rosters in the NFL. What team in the NFL has worse corners than SF?

And while our rookie running back has looked good, the difference between him and a healthy Mostert is a canyon. TB, LA, GB, and AZ are all more talented than SF. Then there is DAL, NO, PHL, and MN all whom are very close talent wise to SF.

I can count on one hand how many QB' coming out of college were compared to Joe Montana 25 years ago. Those QB's never panned out once they got to the pros.

I respect Baldy and normally adhere to his comments. But we don't know how good or great Trey will be until he's been in the league for a few years. The tools seem to be there for Lance to find success and perhaps he becomes a star. But, I would pull back on the reins of all his accolades and comparisons just a little bit at this point in his career.

    9. I think it is one of the most talented rosters in the NFL. 49ers legitimately have five guys on offense/ defense you can make strong arguments are in the top 3 at their position in T Williams, Bosa, Kittle, Juice and Warner. Plus getting an all pro level season from Deebo, and there are some very good complementary pieces as well.

A little top heavy perhaps, but when you have as many elite and very good players as the 49ers have you should be a good team.

Re Lance, yes, comparisons to great players after just his second start are unfair and unreasonable. But I do think Lance has both the physical and mental tools to be very good, and the second half against the Texans showed some of that potential.

    10. If that is the case, then Kyle has no excuse missing the playoffs and 49 has solid reasons for wanting Kyle gone.

  14. BTW, here's a little game I recently came up with called: "Just how stupid does Kyle really think Niner fans are?"

The game is simple really, and this is the way the game works:

Step 1) You get to read one of Kyle's recent quotes in response to media reports (and medical doctors) to the media

    Step 2) Understanding the facts

Step 3) Deciphering Kyle's quote(s) to determine just how stupid Kyle believes 49er fans truly are

    So let's play!

Step 1a) On Sunday morning (1/2/22), Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, reported that San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo, is expected to undergo surgery to repair a torn UC ligament in his right thumb (throwing hand) after the season concludes. According to reports, some of which are clearly coming out of Jimmy's own camp, his UCL (Ulnar Collateral Ligament) injury has been diagnosed as a GRADE 3 "Sprain", which is the most SEVERE variety, also known as a rupture, and it has also resulted in a avulsion fracture at the base of the proximal phalanx.

Step 1b) On Monday (1/3/22), 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was asked to respond to the validity of this report.

Step 1c) Kyle's ACTUAL response: "I've been made aware that the surgery is a possibility," Shanahan told reporters on a conference call. "But, as of right now, he would not need it."

Step 2) Understanding the facts: Unfortunately for Jimmy, cast IMMOBILIZATION for 4 to 6 weeks is recommended regardless of the stability of the MCPJ. Currently, most authors have agreed with Stener's opinion (Dr. Bertil Stener) that 75% of the cases involving the complete rupture (Grade 3) will FAIL TO HEAL PROPERLY without surgery. There is also a potentially serious complication of UCL injuries known as a STENER LESION, in which the ulnar collateral ligament is torn, displaced and ultimately caught between the muscle that moves the thumb and the thumb bone. If this happens, there is no chance for healing, even if the tear is caught acutely and casted immediately. The ligament simply can’t get itself back into place if it is stuck beneath the muscle.

Step 2, continued) More facts: So what could happen if the UCL tear is not treated properly? Well, the Metacarpophalangeal Joint can become ARTHRITIC due to prolonged instability. Once the joint is arthritic, the only treatment is an arthrodesis or FUSION OF THE JOINT. An arthrodesis is well tolerated in this joint, but a reconstruction of the UCL is obviously a much better treatment option. In other words, not only is it highly unlikely to heal properly on it's own (even with immediate IMMOBILIZATION), but there is also a risk of developing a chronic arthritic condition within the thumb joint, as a result!

Step 3) How stupid does Kyle think we are?: Surely Kyle knows that the Rams aren't going to be dumb enough to prepare as if Jimmy is starting, with this kind of serious thumb injury, which, if not treated properly, can lead to a chronic arthritic condition in which the only treatment is an arthrodesis or fusion of the joint! Right?

Sean McVay may be hoping and praying that his team will face an injured Jimmy Garoppolo in the season finale! However, Sean McVay knows Kyle Shanahan very well. Sean knows Kyle well enough to know that while Kyle may think he's smarter than everyone else around the NFL, especially the fans, his overall W-L record says otherwise!

      Delete
    4. OMG, could this get any more comical?

Jimmy Garoppolo, when asked about how his thumb has responded to attempts to throw the football: "Fu_k, it hurts!"

LOL, it feels like the 49ers collective IQ as an organization, has been down precipitately over the course of the last couple of years. Bay Area 49ers beat reporters have entered "uncharted territory" according to sources, "it's getting surreal at this point", as reporters feel like they are being played "beyond anything that resembles 'gamesmanship' at this point."

    2. That said, I still think Jaylon Moore has a higher ceiling, so I would have liked to see him get more run early in the season, just like Trey Lance and Ambrey Thomas. We can see the growth on a per game basis. Heck, in regards to Lance, we can see the growth on a per half game basis.

Like I've been saying all season, when you draft superior talent, you need to find a way to get that talent on the football field. For Lance, it was just about putting him in the best position to succeed, not by sitting on the sideline, but by simplifying the offense, just like Kyle did for Garoppolo at the end of 2017 (and rookie RG3 in 2012), and Garoppolo was at his best in this simplified scheme, IMO. Remember, Alfred Morris led the league for Kyle in 2012, and Morris wasn't even ideally suited for Kyle's system, because he just wasn't very fast to the edge, but he was so successful because of the way RG3 opened up Kyle's rushing attack.

Kyle could have done something very similar for Trey Lance, starting week one, with a game plan full of designed roll-outs and half-field reads, a lot of play-action and zone/read concepts, and I believe the 49ers would have been one of the most dangerous teams in the NFC at this point, heading into a potential playoff birth.

BUT, at this stage I am sure zi sound like a broken record so, at least trey is getting a chance to lay some kind of foundation now, and hopefully he'll get a playoff game, but the Niners have painted themselves into a tough spot now, AT NO FUALT OF TREY'S, but Unfortunately for Trey, he's now going to shoulder the brunt of the pressure, which I think would be the opposite of what you ideally want to put your rookie through.

      And again, that's on Kyle!
