Week 18 Post Match Review: Lambs vs Lazarus

By Scooter_McG

Rejoice 49ers fans! The 49ers did their best impersonation of Lazarus and won an overtime thriller over the Rams to book their place in the playoffs.

In fact, this 49ers season has been one of coming back from the seemingly dead. At 2-4 and then 3-5, many 49er fans and pundits were writing this team off as no chance of making a run to the playoffs. I know after the loss to the McCoy led Cardinals I gave them little hope. But they have since gone 7-2 to be one of the form teams in the NFL heading into the playoffs this year.

Jimmy Garoppolo's season looked all but over after he ruptured the UCL in his thumb vs the Titans. But against all odds he was back starting this game just a fortnight after the injury, with just some tape helping to hold the thumb in place.

And this game reflected the season. The 49ers got off to a disastrous start and a 17-0 hole late in the second quarter, but were able to being themselves back up off the mat with a scintillating third quarter. Then when it looked all over late in the fourth quarter, Jimmy G would show some heroics with less then two minutes left in the game, leading a game tying drive with no timeouts to take it to overtime and ultimately a 49ers victory.

Here's what stood out to me.

Jimmy 'Just Win' Garoppolo. By all rights he shouldn't have even been playing this game. But he toughed it out and rose to the occasion in the second half, leading multiple long drives that brought the team back and sapped the energy and confidence from the Rams.

The first half looked ugly, but as I noted during the game, he looked like Jimmy G to me and not a guy that was impacted by his thumb injury. The real problem for the 49ers in the first half was the players around Jimmy reverted to first half of the season form.

But boy oh boy... when the 49ers really needed Jimmy to be good, he came through. Not only did he help bring them back from the 17-0 deficit, his drive at the end of the fourth quarter to tie the game involved a number of critical throws downfield where he demonstrated great poise and presence in the moment. He was also excellent on the drive in overtime, marching the team down to the red zone. It would only result in a FG, but Jimmy was excellent on the drive.

All in all this was a quintessential Jimmy G game. We saw the highs. We saw the lows. And in the end we saw a win.

First half jitters. Yikes, that first half was rough. I'll be honest, I thought the team was done when they went down 17-0. The team didn't look up for the game on either offense or defense. The most embarrassing series of the half came when they lost yards on three straight plays, then lost their punter for the game after a big return. It pretty much summed up the entire first half which was dominated by the Rams.

The defense in particular struggled on third downs, which has been something of a bugbear for the team in all of their defeats. Too many times we see good work on first and second downs undone by giving up huge plays on third and long. That was the case throughout the first half in this one.

Fighting spirit. As bad as the first half was to watch, the second half was great viewing. The team came out with a real fire, showing they weren't going to go down without a fight. They recommitted to the run game and finally started to get some positive plays out of it due to a combination of much better blocking and some very impressive runs by Mitchell to find hidden yards.

Defensively, the team was able to start shutting down the Rams on third downs, getting pressure on Stafford almost every pass play and forcing him into numerous mental errors. After going with just one incompletion in the first half, Stafford started missing his receivers at every turn. And with the scores tied, he came up with his first turnover of the game on a brilliant pick by Moseley.

Both sides of the ball showed an ability to lift when the chips were down, and they'll need that and more if they are to make some noise in the playoffs.

What can't Deebo do? Is he a WR? Is he a RB? Or... is he a QB? Why pigeonhole him - he can do it all. He would finish this one with 4 catches for 95 yards, 8 carries for 45 yards and a TD, and a 24 yards TD pass to Jennings. He was quite rightly spent by the end of the game. He may not win league MVP, but he's the 49ers MVP for mine.

The only detraction from his game is the drops. He had a couple more today, some on important drives. The team was lucky that they were usually able to overcome those drops and pick up first downs on the next play or two, but if there is one area Deebo must work on moving forward it is his concentration.

WRs come up big. I've already mentioned Deebo, but the other WRs also had big days. Jennings has gradually worked his way into the lineup as the third WR over the course of the season, and even with Sanu back from injury he earned the right to retain the position in recent weeks. He showed why in this one, having a career day with 6 catches for 94 yards and two TDs.

Aiyuk was also impressive, snaring 6 catches for 107 yards on the day. That included some important grabs over the middle on a number of the 49ers scoring drives. Although, like Deebo, Aiyuk also had a drop on one he should have had.

Armstead overpaid? There has been some chatter that the 49ers are overpaying Armstead and that his level of production isn't worth the $20M+ salary cap hits he'll be providing the next few years. There is likely some merit to that argument, but then he is also a lot better than many people like to give him credit for too.

Today he had a monster game, with 2.5 sacks. But as is often the case with Armstead, its what he does that doesn't show up on the stat sheet that makes him valuable. He consistently collapsed the pocket in this one, leading to not only sacks for himself, but also his teammates, and forcing Stafford into poor throws.

Armstead's move to DT mid-season was also the catalyst to a significant improvement in the 49ers run defense this season, with the team now one of the best run stopping units in the NFL.

Ambry Thomas for the win! I was pretty critical of Ambry Thomas after his first couple of starts. But credit where credit is due, he's played well the past few games. He still has some issues with the catch point, highlighted again in this one when he was beaten on a jump ball by Higbee (who to be fair is a much bigger man). But he also came up with the game sealing INT and in general played well. The Moseley and Thomas tandem certainly looked a lot better than having Norman out there.

Looking ahead. The 49ers win, and the Cowboys victory over the Eagles, means the 49ers will now visit the Cowboys in the first week of the playoffs. Nothing better than an old rivalry game.

Hopefully the 49ers came out of this one mostly injury free, and guys like Trent and K'Wuan Williams will be fit for next week.

  1. Lazarus, lmao! 6.7 yards per play against an All-Star defense minus your 2 starting OT's, and a quarterback with a compromised thumb. Phenomenal.

Defense held McVay's offense to 4 yards allowed per play. That was minus your starting NB, K'Waun Williams, and a secondary that hadn't practiced all week due to covid. Not too shabby!

After the field goal to end the half I knew we had an opportunity to get back in the game with a TD drive. It wasn't until Jimmy G's INT in the endzone that I lost all hope. Like the Rams' premature celebration along the bench, I believed the game was over. Just an incredible win by our guys. Couldn't be happier. Now let's go to Dallas and show McCarthy what's up!

I think he has been at a Pro Bowl level for the 2nd half- and I agree, moving out Kerr and sliding in Armstead was significant to the second half.

I, admittedly, didn't notice K'Waun wasn't playing- which is awesome as it shows the secondary played well in the slot.

Line is +3..... two good teams. Just glad that th 49ers made it.

    Thanks for the write-up Scooter!

    1. My pleasure dlptown.

The way Armstead has played down the stretch, and the DL as a whole, makes me think he has to be kept at DT next season too. And they need to find a way to re-sign Jones. Those two can rotate with Kinlaw and Givens.

      Can't wait for next week!

    2. I agree, I have always thought Armstead was a far better DT than Edge. He has real value as an interior pass rusher but offers little from the outside. If SF is able to add a pass rusher in the draft and a solid cb in free agency I think the D could significantly improve next year which is saying a lot.

      Delete
    3. I mean, one of his sacks was from the outside, he basically bullrushed the tackle.

      Delete
    4. eMJay, he does get some reps at DE on 3rd downs as they were using the DL all across the line on 3rd and long. Bosa and Key were actually getting snaps at DT in those situations.

It doesn't change the fact that Armstead has played the vast majority of his snaps at DT the second half of the season, and the defense has improved tremendously during that span.

  3. Another nice summary Scooter!
Hats off to JG, he pulled a victory out of the jaws of a 9er defeat and put the team in the playoffs. I think we all had doubts about him on this one? I confess I did. He also did both himself and the 9ers a solid, by helping his own trade value. Also have to give a shout out to the O-line. With both OT's out, they gave JG enough time to do make big plays when it looked like the game was getting out of hand.
The 9er WR's gave notice to the NFL they're a force to be reckoned with and Jennings has stepped up to secure the 3Rd WR spot. As far as what to call Deebo, how about Superman?

The defense come up with big plays when they needed to!
Mosley and Ambry Thomas come up with INT's, Thomas looks like he's a keeper and the D line, Bosa, Armstead and Jones, kept the pressure on Stafford. Ebukam and Keys have found their game late in the season and look like solid rotation
    players.

  4. Jimmy G was absolutely heroic today. He delivered on the most important game of the season. And he'll always have my respect as a QB regardless of where he plays next year. I told my wife yesterday that for the 49ers to win, they would need to get Juszc and Jennings involved. Juszc did his usual good job in blocking, but Jennings made a big impact today.
It was true nail-biter today, but winning was worth getting my nerves tied in knots.
Great win, and really happy for Jimmy G.

  5. Excellent summary Scooter!

I would give some love to the Special teams. Especially Gould. Solid punting and Kicking with Wishnowsky out and Juice with the Holds.

Talk about overcoming adversity....OT out, entire Secondary didn't practice due to COVID, NCB out, Punter out and going down 17 to Division champs on the road! I think this is probably the best win of the season!

  7. The game was a microcosm of the entire season. Which team is going to show up. Actually, they both showed up. The first half the defense could not get off the field. Finally, JG led a master drive with 38 seconds and got 3 points - so important. JG for the first time put the team on his back and played a brilliant gut-wrenching performance.
Running the ball, I keep saying run the ball and good things happen, second half tells that tale.

Good to see Thomas get that interception, he is on the rise and that should help his confidence greatly.

  8. As promised, I will be leaving the blog until the 49ers 2022 training camp.

Also as promised, I want to issue Kyle KYLE a much deserved apology!

Somehow, some way, against all odds, his team won what will go down as an all-time CLASSIC!

I've been hard on Kyle, for a number of reasons, but mostly for his inability to move away from Jimmy G, after Jimmy has mostly been unable to step up when it matters most. But that's all changed now! While I still think Jimmy is ultimately unequipped to take this team to the promised land, the fact of the matter is JIMY WAS FLAT OUT HEROIC TODAY, all thing considered! Don't get me wrong, it wasn't always pretty, and there more than a couple of passes that could have been back-breakers! However, they didn't end up breaking the 49ers back. And considering all of the circumstances involved with what went into this victory today, this was ALL-TIME great performance from Jimmy Garoppolo, and it's a performance that I won't soon forget!

There's really nothing left for me to say at this point, and as promised, I'll be taking a long hiatus. But before I do, I just want to say this one more time:

I was too hard on Kyle this season. I didn't give Kyle the respect that he probably deserved. This win today was validation for just how good Kyle is as an offensive play caller / play designer, which I have always acknowledged that he is, BTW.

What I haven't always acknowledged is that, while he's a better OC than he is a HC, he certainly a much better HC than I have given credit for being over the last couple years, and for that I do owe him a heart-felt apology, because today's victory was nothing short of AMAZING, and my oh my, talk about an EPIC comeback when everything was on the line!

Scooter, Razor, GEEP, even eMJay, I'll catch you guys next season!

    And .... Go Niners.

    2. This game just showed why your hard line stance was irrational. You took one decision you disagreed with (not starting Lance from the get go) and let it escalate to seeing things that weren't there. I can understand disagreeing with the decision to stick with JG, but most of your other arguments against him have been driven by emotion not rational thought.

Shanahan isn't perfect and will make mistakes. But he's still a good coach and knows what he is doing.

JG isn't a great QB. But he is a guy Shanahan knows he can win with, while letting Lance sit and learn.

Next year will be Lance's time, and he'll be more ready for it with a full season and offseason under his belt learning, including two full starts.

Whether you decide to take time away or not is up to you. I'm not holding you to your ill advised wager. But I hope when we see you next you can accept we as a fan base are pretty lucky to have Shanahan as the HC, even if he isn't perfect.

  10. Great write-up Scooter!

Great team win. So many players rose to the occasion in the second half on offense, defense and ST. Some of these little things may go unnoticed but shouldn't be, like Gould's two punts of 47 and 42 yards.

Really liked the way Jimmy G overcame adversity and rallied the team to a win.

One of two Jimmy’s INTS should have been nullified because of a hit to the head penalty on the Rams. A zebra was looking directly at the crime scene and still missed the call.

The second INT off the tipped pass was just a fantastic play by Ramsey.

Niners should be able to run the ball against the Cowboys and control the clock. The D line is looking good. Hope Trent Williams will be back.

Niners finally have a WR corp.

It's quite possible the Niners will have to beat four division winners in their quest for the SB starting with the Rams yesterday. Dallas next on the road, then if Bucs beat Eagles, then the Niners go up to Green Bay, then if the Bucs beat the winner of the Rams/Card game then the Niners would go to Tampa to take on the World Champs. Quite a daunting task considering all are on the road. I believe this team can do it.

Three pass catchers almost had 100 yards each (only Aiyuk actually did) -- and Kittle was not one of them. Teams really have focused on taking him out of play. In fact, TEs have not been catching passes a whole lot in the second half of the season. As Barrows noted, neither Woerner nor Dwelley has been targeted since Week 12.

Niners re-signed Tanner Hudson to the practice squad -- will probably compete with Dwelley next off-season.

    2. He will never be a great or elite QB because of his interceptions. He is really good with the two-minute stuff.

      Delete
    3. To be fair, he is inconsistent with the two minute stuff as well, just like the rest of his game. Heck, even in this past game, his first crack at what was effectively a 2 minute drill went nowhere. The defense had to make a stop and the 49ers burn their timeouts on defense to give Jimmy G a second go at it.

      Delete
    4. Nobody is perfect, and he has on many occasions worked the 2-minute drill at half and end of the game quite well. If I remember Scooter he completed the first pass to Kittle for no gain, I question the play call myself, the second play was over the middle to Kittle and he was popped for an incompletion, the third play had no chance due to the LT failure. I would say hardly JG fault.

Now with the second series in that same 2-minutes the play calling was much different, and the players too include JG performed. His drive at half time to get those 3 points won the game. 38 seconds with two timeouts, 85 yards.

THE BIG "IF!" IT ALL COMES DOWN TO JG AND NO TURNOVERS!

If an opposing offense is able to limit or eliminate turnovers altogether, the Dallas defense is a middle-of-the-pack unit. If not, this defense will make you pay. Where they're most susceptible, though, just so happens to be what the 49ers' offense does best.

This season, the Cowboys' defense has surrendered 2,275 yards after the catch, the fourth-most in the league.
Soon enough, the Dallas defense will be introduced to Deebo Samuel, George Kittle and Brandon Aiyuk, aka the YAC Bros.
