This game should have been over early but thanks to sloppy offensive play, and a pass rush that lost it's double team magnet, it seemed it would never end. Jimmy G had the dagger in his hand and missed a wide open Aiyuk, who sent Diggs back to bitch school, in what would have been the game sealing TD. He followed that up by rolling out and throwing it to a Cowboy defender. Classic Jimmy Garoppolo.
Richard Hightower has to go next year. If I can see a fake coming, you've got to ask yourself why the man in charge didn't. Once a year is bad enough but twice? C'mon man! I like the guy but they can do better.
The fact that I had to sit there and listen to a Cowboy homer like Romo as the game analyst was in poor taste. They should have had the acuity to replace him with an impartial analyst. To make things worse, their sideline reporter not once but twice referred to Nick Bosa as Joey Bosa when updating his injury. Once is a rookie mistake. Twice is downright disrespectful.
In the end we won and that's all that matters. Maybe it was worth enduring the most irritating game I can remember just to see the Jones' get their hopes up, only to roll snake eyes in the end. They say Cowboy's don't cry but there's a lot of tears, and sadness deep in the heart of Texas tonight folks. How 'bout them Cowboys!
Special teams are horrible. KS play calling wasn't as good as it's been. JG wasn't sharp for sure but sharp enough. To beat the Packers and they have the team to do it, they will have to play better than they did today.
ReplyDeleteThey won't win if Bosa doesn't clear protocol. Rodgers will carve them up like a roast beast.
DeleteThanks for doing the post match review razor.
ReplyDeleteThat was a real nail biter! Snuck away with the win, but wasn't convincing at the end there despite looking like the better team most of the game.
Won't be able to rely on the Packers beating themselves like the Cowboys did with their penalties and mistakes.
You are right razor, getting Bosa through concussion protocol will be important. Hopefully Warner is also good to go.
No problem buddy. Hope you get to feeling better soon!
DeleteThanks mate!
DeleteScooter, hope you are feeling well. Enjoy your view points.
ReplyDeleteRazor, While agreeing about ST coaching & playing, it appeared that they were ready for the fake and a player missplayed his assignment.
Who, Norman?
DeleteThey are playing Sat night that sucks. Kickoff about 14 degrees.
ReplyDeleteThat gives him less than a week to clear protocol.
DeleteBosa will be there.
DeleteDave, I hope you're right.
DeleteMatt Maiocco reported that Bosa’s father said Nick seems okay and he expects him to be ready against Green Bay.
DeleteCubus, thanks. That's fantastic news! I was very concerned because he had one less day to pass through protocol.
DeleteConcussions can be very unpredictable. Just because Nick Bosa felt good after the game last night, doesn't mean he's not going to wake up this morning, or even tomorrow morning for that matter, feeling extremely nauseated, and with other concerning concussion related symptoms. It's impossible to know at this point whether he will pass protocol in time to be cleared for Saturday's game.
DeleteNFL Concussion Protocol: "Every NFL player diagnosed with a concussion must follow a five-step process before being cleared to fully practice or participate in an NFL game. Each player and each concussion is unique, and there is no set time-frame for return to participation. Team medical staff consider the player's current concussive injury, as well as past exposures and medical history, family history and future risk in managing a player's care. After a player has progressed through the five-step process, he must be seen and cleared by an Independent Neurological Consultant (INC), jointly approved by the NFL and NFLPA, who is not affiliated with any NFL club. Until cleared by this independent physician, a player may not return to contact practice or play in an NFL game."
Fingers crossed that Nick is cleared to play, although I don't think the 49ers are necessarily doomed without him. I think the 49ers DL has the depth to help the 49ers win without Bosa, in large part because I think Saturday's game is more likely to be determined by which team has the more consistent quarterback, and which QB makes the fewest mistakes.
Jimmy Garoppolo 2nd half Wildcard stats: 5/11, 39 yards, 0 TD's, 1 INT. In Garoppolo's defense, he is playing with a bad thumb, but he's going to need to be better than that in Green Bay, and the problem is that the 49ers have to travel in a short week, because of how poorly they played earlier in the season, and a bad thumb, in the freezing cold, on a short week, is going to be a lot to overcome. But the 49ers will have a chance on Saturday, because they have a lot of depth, and a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. Plus, the weather might make things tough on both quarterbacks, and I would never say never when it comes to Garoppolo!
DeleteBesides, they have Deebo Samuel, and you can win under any, and all conditions when you have a Deebo Samuel! Just get him the football!
DeleteAnonymous: You're right that concussions are unpredictable, so we have to wait for the medical assessment. Still the report was a step in the right direction, but no guarantee at this point.
DeleteOh 49Reas...err..anonymous
DeleteThe Bosa constrictor should extended as quick as possible cuz what he brings is huge.
ReplyDeleteA win against the Cowgirls is always special.
Since week 10, only 3 teams averaged 7+ yds per pass play:
ReplyDelete49ers 7.7
Chiefs 7.5
Packers 7.2
"To make things worse, their sideline reporter not once but twice referred to Nick Bosa as Joey Bosa"
ReplyDeleteWell CBS is the AFC network, so there's that.
Hopefully Niners got a playoff's worth of mistakes out in that one game. Open carry Cowboys, even worse, kept shooting themselves in the foot and just about every other body part, starting with Jerrah and his "let the sunshine in" open roof.
I'm always amazed at the planning and expense that go into building a stadium, but it's beyond puzzling why they built it east to west.
DeleteThe funniest thing yesterday was this...Cowboys WR Cedric Wilson missing to spot/catch the ball on a 3rd & Long because the sun was "shining" in his eye while in an "Indoor" stadium. :) :)
DeleteThe percentage of this happening is SO SMALL. I mean you can't make this stuff up.
We got real lucky and our LUCK might run out if we keep committing bone headed mistakes.
I hate whiners, no I am not talking about Niner fans, I am talking about the Cowboys, especially Prescott and McCarthy.
ReplyDeleteIt was a risk they assumed, that said, it was VERY close to getting the snap off and I can see the frustration. HOWEVER, what nobody is accounting for is even if they do get the snap off before time expired, they still must run off at least one second for the spike, which means time would likely have expired anyhow. I don't like the whining either, but all teams have them, 49ers included. I just hope the success will lead to greater loyalty at Levi's as well- too many ticket speculators.
DeleteNo class too. Condoning their fans' behavior after they threw things at the refs. SMH!
DeleteRazor
DeleteTwo things are abundantly obvious if the 9ers are to defeat Rogers and the Packers.
A) Special teams are the 9ers achilles heel. If their
mistakes aren't eliminated, they'll cost the 9ers a chance to play for the division championship.
B) JG can NOT continue making rookie QB mistakes that result in an INT., when all he needs to do if he's under pressure, is throw the ball away.
If Dallas hadn't beat themselves by making mistakes, the 9er season would be over. We can't count on the Packers beating themselves.
Geep, C)Don't leave anytime for Rodgers at the end of the game.
DeleteYep
DeleteRogers 0-3 against the Niners in the playoffs.
ReplyDeleteFangio had two of those, right?
DeleteUC / Razor
DeleteWhat team do you think will hire Fangio to be their next HC?
I don't think Fangio will get another head coaching opportunity. Took too long to get this one. I'd imagine he'll finish his career out as one of the leagues premier DC's. The Raiders would be smart to hire Harbaugh/Fangio.
DeleteI doubt Fangio gets another HC job.
DeleteRazor / UC
DeleteI have to agree with you on Fangio, but I was curious how you felt.
I could be wrong, but I don't believe Harbaugh will leave Michigan, not after hiring ND Mike Elston to be his D-line coach.
If however, Harbaugh did leave Michigan for an NFL HC job, I believe it would be for the Bears.

Jimmy Garoppolo sprained his throwing shoulder in the second quarter and played the rest of the game. Kyle Shanahan said the quarterback should be able to practice this week.
Man, he is injury prone, isn't he?
DeleteWhere you're literally the guy that 11 want to kill on 60+ plays a game, youre going to become "injured".
DeleteDBs, LBs, they get to do the hitting and for the most part are involved in 20% of the game (10 tackles for a LB is great, and thats just 1/6th of the defensive snaps).
He's hurt, not injured.

ReplyDeleteWarner is a warrior...he should be good to go Saturday. Glad to have him on our team.

2. Green Bay 28%
3. San Francisco 27.8%

Is it still true that in the NFL, running games travel, and defenses win championships, even in the year 2022?
DeleteI sure hope so!

@JackHammer_NFL
Jimmy Garoppolo has the second highest QBR of the 10 quarterbacks that have started so far on Super Wild Card weekend.
Thanks cubus.
DeleteThat's a strange one. It didn't seem like he was the 2nd best QB this weekend.
Thats why we shouldn't put too much into QBR and other quantitative metrics, for good or bad.
DeleteAs well, too much is placed into the fantasy stats, caring only for yards and tds. We should all know that Montana, Young, Aikman and many other winning Qbs back in the day would have average fantasy stats.
If the team wins, thats what should matter most.
Back when the Niners were 3-5 I kept thinking the Dolphins going to get a top ten pick. Its mid 20's now and if winning continues...
ReplyDeleteSince week 10 only 3 teams have averaged more than 7 yards per pass play:
ReplyDelete49ers 7.7
Chiefs 7.5

Razor, do you know if that includes YAC?
DeleteDoes not include YAC.
DeleteHOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS? Stephen A. Smith has hilarious reaction to Cowboys' playoff loss to 49ers
ReplyDeletehttps://sports.yahoo.com/stephen-smith-hilarious-reaction-cowboys-052524481.html
Can't stand him or Michael Irving (they literally come off as stereotype caricatures), but love it when he rags on the Cowboys...especially because we all know he's taking diggs at Skip.
Delete9ERS HAVE REPLACEMENTS FOR FORD AND DON'T NEED TO DRAFT A D-LINEMAN IN THE 2022 DRAFT.....
ReplyDeleteMid-season trade, 2 under-the-radar free agents spark 49ers pass rush vs Cowboys.
Charles Omenihu, Samson Ebukam and Arden Key led the way for the 49ers with Bosa sidelined. Omenihu was acquired in a mid-season trade with the Texans, Ebukam signed a relatively modest two-year, $12 million contract this offseason, and Key joined the club on a one-year deal worth just over $1 million.
That trio Sunday accounted for 13 pressures, three sacks, one QB hit and nine hurries.
* Omenihu led the way with a team-high six pressures while playing 34 snaps – 14 more than his previous single-game high since joining the 49ers. He accounted officially for 1.5 sacks.
* Ebukam struggled out of the gate but came on strong in the second half of the year and carried that into Sunday with four pressures and 0.5 sacks. The 49ers added him to be a tertiary edge rusher who could thrive in a more specific defensive end role than the one he played for the Rams as an outside linebacker.
* Sunday’s performance for Key wasn’t necessarily an ‘out-of-nowhere’ effort. He was very good in the regular season, especially when rushing from the interior. He didn’t record a sack, but he did notch three pressures and three hurries. Key’s consistent production with and without Bosa has been one of the big reasons the 49ers put together such a good defensive effort this year
They need to make sure they hold onto Jones and, to a lesser extent, Key.
DeleteI say a lesser extent for Key, because I think he is a bit like Kerry Hyder. Benefits from the scheme/ style. So I wouldn't give him big money to stay. But I have seen enough that I want him back here.
With all that said, if they can find a genuinely very good pass rush option opposite Bosa, that will take the DL to a new level.
Not sure we'll be able to afford not to go the rookie pass rusher opposite Bosa after we pay him $28 million a year.
DeleteScooter / Razor
DeleteI agree the 9ers need to "hold onto" Jones and Key, also Laken Tomlinson. But as your likely aware, the 9ers have a ton of free agents in 2022 and even with Paraag Marathe's magic, they'll need to make some very difficult decisions.
The following is a list of all the 9er FA's.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/san-francisco-49ers/
Who do the 9ers keep and who are salary cap victims?
Yep, even with JG off the books, they won't have a tonne of cap space to play with.
DeleteI suspect they will rework a few deals to assist though.
Lambeau Field in January, football doesn't get any better than this. Going to be cold, right now it's looking about 18 degrees at kickoff. Niners have to play mistake free football, no turnovers, minimal penalties and KS play calling has to be in top form. Niners have the talent to win this game. Best way to defend Rogers is keep the ball from him. Niners will out physical the Packers and pull out yet another heart stopping game.
ReplyDeleteFor the win, same formula this week as last week.
Run the ball - lots
Have a great pass rush.

DeleteIn the pain following the Dallas 1St Rd playoff loss, it wasn’t hard to catch the message of change in the words of Jerry Jones. Postseason flop aside, Jones and his son Stephen have been staring at reality for far longer. Something with ramifications for 2022 and beyond.
Dallas has solid talent heading for FA and not enough cap space to put up a fight for it. They’re also bracing to lose an assistant coach, as the Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is certain to get a HC offer. Now lump in those inevitabilities with Dallas being forced to go bargain shopping for FA's and it’s clear why Jerry and Stephen were dazed on Sunday.
Dallas was built to take advantage of 2021, with the full knowledge that 2022 was going to hit the roster in some spots. Dallas knew it when they paid top salaries to quarterback, running back, wide receiver, defensive end and across the offensive line. The bloat at the top of the books is so remarkable that seven players (QB Prescott, DE Lawrence, WR Cooper, RB Elliott and OL Zack Martin, Tyron Smith and La’El Collins), account for 72.9% of next season’s cap.
DeleteBefore the shoulder injury, Jimmy was 11-13, 133 yards, 10.2 YPA, 109.3 rating.
ReplyDeleteAfter the injury, he was 5-12, 39 yards, 3.3 YPA, 1 INT, 15.6 rating.
“Every throw was impacted,” he said. “It’s a shoulder injury, so any type of throw you’re going to feel it, and it’s going to change things. But yeah, it’s just similar to when I was first dealing with the thumb. My body’s just learning, and I have to adapt to it.”
Jimmy should have 8-10 attempts while they run another 40 burger.
DeleteHe probably will have around 20-22 attempts in the best (lowest # of attempts) scenario. IMO, they will need over 60 offensive plays to keep Rodgers on the bench long enough.
DeleteThe key for the offense would be to give Jimmy time to throw. He can be efficient even with the injuries as long he's not pressured excessively. And when he is, he needs to throw the ball away or even take the sack.
Green Bay will not be able to run the ball.
DeleteYes, I can see Niners bottling up the run effectively. That Armstead move to inside was a master stroke.
DeleteOn the flip side, Packers will see a brand new running game from the Niners. IIRC, Mitchell was out for the Packer game this season and Deebo was not being used as a RB at that time.
Some Niners' takeaways:
ReplyDeleteRoad teams were 1-5 in the NFL playoffs. Niners had the only win.
Niner OL didn't give up a sack.
Robbie Gould hasn't missed a FG in his playoff career. He's 18-18.
On defense:
49ers were #3 in total defense.
49ers ranked 5th in the NFL with 48 sacks in 2021.
Cowboys averaged 6 yards per play over the season, but 4.4 against the 49ers. Extrapolated over the season, that would be last in the NFL.
Finally, Niners' D have restricted the opposing QB to below their average yards thrown in 15 out of the 18 games.
