Jimmy G needs to step up and carve up the Bengals LB's. The Cincinnati Bengals rank 29th in defensive DVOA on passes over the middle of the field. The strength of Jimmy's game is intermediate middle. Expect Jimmy G to operate more from under center in this game tailored more to Wilson's running strength.
Jeff Wilson needs to step up and have a career day. He's said to have his football legs under him and he needs to show up big time. Wilson is said to prefer to run downhill as opposed to running out of shotgun.
Kittle needs to step up the dirty work in the trenches if the 49ers want to run the ball, and then YAC it up off of play action. I expect to see more 5 DL fronts from the Bengals in an attempt to thwart the outside zone game, and force the 49ers to bang their heads against the wall of their run defense, D. J. Reader.
Tom Compton needs to step up his pass pro but that's probably unrealistic. Minimize his exposure. Brunskill will have his hands full of Reader. The strategy would seem to be lots of outside zone runs to force the big man to expend lots of energy in pursuit from sideline to sideline.
Defensively the pass rush needs to step up and make Burrows' day a living hell to protect a vulnerable secondary.
Special teams needs to step up and just not be a liability. Do your jobs!
If team A shows up no contest Niners win. If team B shows up Niners lose. I not sure if I have ever seen such a fickle team. One-week they play like champions the next like an 0-17 team.
ReplyDeleteJG no interceptions eh bud.
Skill players - hang on to the football
Special teams - SMH
How about some protection from the 0-line
run the ball.
All players keep the penalties down.
Yep, if they play good in all three phases they should win.
DeleteI'll repeat that ... Jimmy needs to step up! There's a decent chance that Jimmy has one of his bounce back games vs the Bengals, but it's really hard to look at Jimmy as a QB who can be counted on when it's all on the line, and his time to shine inevitably comes knocking!
DeleteAnd that's IF he manages to finish the season on a healthy streak.
Sorry if my position is ... I'll believe it when I see it from Jimmy. I know who he is as a QB, but I really don't mean to bash Jimmy because he's a really good teammate. He may make the typical excuse, or pull the old - "that's football" line of response, but he seems like a modest enough guy, and I appreciate that, and he certainly isn't a scrub, as he's definitely a step higher than scrub, whatever you call that.
Then again, how many multi-millions has he raked in on his blockbuster contract (after only 5 games)???
Nobody is feeling sorry for JImmy GQ! Then again, he isn't a total scrub, and he does play hard and he doesn't point fingers at others, so he's impossible to really dislike!
But it's time to move on from Jimmy. He's essentially a lame duck, right? In fact, I would describe the 49ers as "in LIMBO" this season, with so many pending free agents, and an inexperienced stud athlete, cannon for an arm, QB who needs reps!
The 49ers 2021 season feels to me like a SLOW BLEED, doesn't it to you guys?
DeleteBut when you mortgage the future on a dynamic pass/run QB like Lance, who moves like a big cat, has a howitzer for an arm, and has shown the ability to go through all of his progressions. Just get down to business getting the kid the snaps he needs. Steve Young knows that he needed actual live game reps in order to develop, that's why he's so frustrated that Kyle can't even get Lance on the field for a SINGLE frcken snap! WTF? What is happening with Kyle Shanahan, after all the hoopla during preseason? Was that some kind of high drama, or some kind of ruse? Kyle put Trey's mom through the ringer during the draft, BTW, and she wishes it had played out differently. Who wouldn't? Everyone knew Trevor Lawrence was going 1, and Zach Wilson was going 2! Why the need to pull the wool over everybody with the Mac Jones charade? I don't get it!
That's a lot of "NEED TO's" that need to happen for the 9ers to win...Maybe too many?
ReplyDelete* "Jimmy G needs to step up and carve up the Bengals LB's."
And that leads to INT's when JG locks onto his receiver and doesn't see the underneath LB! Just pound the rock 40 times instead, control the clock and keep the bengals offense off the field.
Not sure they can pound it 40 times with Wilson and Hasty.
DeleteAre you worried about durability Razor?
DeleteRazor
DeleteYou Maybe right, but we know bad things happen when JG doesn't see, or forget about, the defensive players!
The 9er win when they run ~40 times and lose when they
depend on JG to throw the ball and carry the offense.
Hell yea. Hasty is best suited as a 3rd down receiving back. Wilson goes down and you're left with the guy you just signed. I don't think they have much of a choice. Jimmy has to carve 'em up in their soft white underbelly.
DeleteSo we're left with a choice of damned if they do and damned if they don't.
ReplyDeleteOne of the rookie CB's will be starting as Johnson is ruled out. Pass rush will be very important.
ReplyDeleteI'll wager Thomas plays outside and Lenoir backs up Williams.
DeleteI would look to split 50/50 between Wilson and Hasty and stick to whomever is more successful- Deebo is active. Bosa needs to harass his pal all day .........
