Shan-A-Rant

After getting picked off by a Zimmer led defense for the second time in recent memory, we all saw what happened afterward on the sidelines; the Shan-a-rant in the face of Jimmy G. Joe Staley:

“I’ve been on the sideline before when Kyle shields his face with the playsheet and rips his quarterback and other players, and it’s not fun,” Staley told KNBR's "Papa & Lund." “You don’t want to be a part of that. Kyle has a mastery of cursing you out and sounding really cool while he does it.

“Whatever he said to Jim got him dialed back in. It shows a lot of growth. Jimmy is playing with a lot of confidence right now. That is a perfect example of the confidence he has in himself to kind of flush that. As players when things don’t go your way, guys will fold under pressure sometimes and start doubting themselves.

“He finished the day going 16-for-21. Very efficient on third-down conversions. He got back to what we saw in the last four weeks. I think it just comes back to the confidence he has right now, in the system, in himself, to regroup, not doubt himself and lead the team. And he’s doing a good job of that this year.”

I couldn't agree more with Joe. I think both coach and quarterback are maturing before our eyes. The way Shanny handled Aiyuk has paid off as well. Let's see if they can keep it going.

    * The fact JG responded to KS's rant and didn't throw another INT, opposed to going into the tank and throwing another one is encouraging! As it led to another 9er win.

    * The fact that throwing INT's is an ongoing problem that
JG still hasn't resolved, is concerning and could lead to losing games against better teams. Like teams the 9ers will face in the pos season, should they continue to win.

  3. Something different what a storm in college football first Lincoln Riley goes from Oklahoma to USC than Brian Kelly goes out of the blue to LSU.
Both Kelly and Riley on a not zo good way.
And what i like a lot is that players and commits all endorsed Marcus Freeman for the ND HC position and what he got.
For me that's a slam dunk hire.

    1. It's all about "SHOW ME THE MONEY!" And then the Universities complain when players want a share....

  4. For Shanahan, I think this is a case of when you are winning, every decision and call you make looks great, and when you are losing every decision and call make is cheeks.

I said earlier in the season the players deserved a lot of the blame for the 49ers record, not just Shanahan. Yes, it ultimately rests with the HC and Shanahan certainly wasn't blameless in how he was calling games, but the players were making way too many silly mistakes.

End of the day, if the 49ers make the playoffs this year a lot of the impetus for that can be traced back to an embarrassing loss to the Cardinals, which seemed to shock both the HC and players into the reality that you need to earn the right to play and call plays with confidence/ arrogance.

    1. No doubt it is a two-way street with the problems the Niners incurred earlier in the season. Great play calls can go sour and bad play calls can go great; the result of a play call doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of the call.

Losing a game by being beaten by your opponent is one thing, losing a game by official's bad call is another thing, but when you lose by beating yourself and look bad doing it is a whole another thing and that was the Cardinal game. They needed to be shocked after that game, I have watched the Niners since the late 50's and I can not remember a time when I was so disgusted with the entire element of the Niners as I was after the Cards games.

    2. “No one was there, you take the sack, or you hit the check down,” Kyle Shanahan said about the play. “He knew that, and I knew it because I could see it wasn’t a good play call as soon as I called it.”

When that interception occurred, I blamed it on KS. I didn't see a checkdown open myself, I would have preferred a throw out of bounds.

    3. Yeah, that Cards game was one of the most insipid performances I've seen from this team since Shanahan took over. But it also looks like it was exactly the type of defeat the team needed.

Tbh, I think up until that game this team had been riding the coat-tails of 2019. The Revenge Tour of 2020 spoke to a mentality within the team that they were just going to stroll into the playoffs, rather than one of needing to start from scratch and earn that right again. And I think the team still had that belief to start this season, thinking the only reason for not winning in 2020 was injuries.

  5. Apt title - Shan-A-Rant :) Gotta agree...Jimmy has been solid so far. I was actually comparing his stats with Baker Mayfield and in virtually every metric, Jimmy is better.

Especially in Intangible ones like Maturity, Locker room leadership, putting up with Rants..etc. The guy always bounces back when people write him off.

I can see us getting back the 2nd Rounder and another late round pick for Jimmy if we make some noise in the playoffs.

  6. Mitchel needs 119 yards to become the Niners all-time leader to pound the rock.
