That's how it is currently looking.
ReplyDelete49ers still have a pretty tough road ahead to secure their playoff spot. Certainly no guarantee they'll stick at #6.
Kocurek has to be licking his chops looking at the offensive lines he's got coming up on the menu.
DeleteI see the top three teams winning out. Cowboys should be safe for the fourth slot. I have not given up on the Rams losing one more game before they play us, they can get just like the Niners, fickle. So yah so far it looks that way and not too much can happen to change it. But that's why the game is played you just never know on any given game anything can happen.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind parody but this year is off the charts paradoxical.
DeletePlayoffs? Playoffs? Of course I kid, but pondering the playoffs as a team that is ONE game above .500, has gotten me thinking as an old time Forty Niner Faithful, so of course I need to get into it.!
ReplyDeleteThere are all kinds of different 49ers fans, but for the most part, they tend to fall into two different camps:
OLD TIMERS like myself - who first fell in love with football watching the "Team of the 80's", which in reality was closer to TWO full decades of NFL dominance that took root in the NFL at the start of the 80's, and be=arely let up until the late 1990's.
And NEW TIMERS - who weren't old enough to experience the 49ers glory days of the 80's & 90's, and therefore can't really appreciate the level of greatness that the 49ers reached, and maintained for longer than anyone could have imagined back then.
For the NEW TIME 49er fans, who never had an opportunity to experienced being at the very top of the mountain, I would imagine being a 49er fan is a different experience altogether. For the NEW TIMER, Kyle Shanahan, with all of his fancy pre-snap motion, must seem like some kind of offensive mastermind, but for us OLD TIMERS, who were fortunate enough to experience true offensive genius, watching Bill Walsh change the game of football in such a fundamental way. Kyle Shanahan doesn't have the same kind of shine.
While Kyle has been at the forefront of excessive pre-snap motion, which has it's legitimate place in terms of offensive gadgetry, but Bill Walsh's "West Coast Offense" actually revolutionized the sport! The real GENIUS turned the strategy of running the football in order to set up the pass, completely upside down. So from a schematic standpoint, Bill Walsh was on an entirely different level than Kyle. But even then, Bill Walsh was only able to reach those heights because he understood the importance of finding the right players to make the WCO work, and Bill absolutely understood that everything starts with having the right quarterback to run his system, and he needed his QB to grow along with his WCO concepts.
Speaking for myself, as an OLD TIMER, that's why simply hovering with a W-L record at right around .500, and being just good enough on a week to week basis to make squeak into the playoffs isn't good enough. The bar should be set higher than that. Securing a wildcard birth, with the hope of reaching new heights once the playoffs start, is a lot like chasing rainbows, and for OLD TIMERS like myself, chasing rainbows is no longer a thrill.
Bill Walsh established an offensive mentality of greatness. Walsh would never accept the mediocrity of the Kyle Shanahan era, and Walsh would never get on board with the team building strategy of trying to run it back, by simply trying to duplicate a season that ULTIMATELY CAME UP SHORT, to begin with!
And the way I see it, I think that's where the disconnect is between different generations of 49er fans in terms of Jimmy Garoppolo vs Trey Lance, and how this argument fits perfectly within this generational disconnect between the OLD TIMERS and NEW TIMERS!
No salary cap vs. salary cap
DeleteAnd one more thing:
DeleteIf, before this year's NFL draft, you guys were secretly, and quietly, listening in on a conference call between a HC and GM of a random NFL team, and their strategy for winning the upcoming season that was being discussed, was to pay their QB like a franchise QB ($27M), and to use the entire top half of their draft on players who were barely expected to contribute during the upcoming season, including TWO additional FIRST round picks on a "backup" QB (for the purposes of this season) ....
Are you guys telling me that you'd be able to keep quiet, and not bust out laughing at the preposterousness of the conversation you are listening in on, completely blowing your cover?
Come on, man!
OK Razor, do you think Walsh's answer for the slary cap era would be to pay his QB like a franchise QB, AND spend 3 first round picks on another QB who isn't even playing?
ReplyDeleteAre you really telling me that's the way to win a championship in the salary cap era?
Come on Razor, you know better! ShanaLynch deserve ridicule for this season, because 7-6 is par for the course with their 2021 team-building strategy.
Whether it pays off next season and beyond is beyond the point, because I am talking about THIS SEASON!
What ShanaLynch essentially did was make 2021 a developmental year. And that would be just fine, unless they thought they genuinely had a Super Bowl winning roster.
ReplyDeleteThe idea that they were smart enough to build their roster completely backwards in 2021, and still win a title, is laughable, and it's the main reason they are currently wallowing in 3rd place in the NFC West, have been swept by 2 teams in their own division, and are only still in the playoff conversation because there are only 5 above average teams in the NFC this season.
I told you guys this was never going to work back in August, so don't blame me.
ReplyDeleteUnless of course you are under the delusion that the 49ers are actually a legitimate Super Bowl contender this season, in which case this conversation may need to wait until after the wild card round.
I think given everything we have seen this year it is now clear the reason many of these rookies haven't been playing comes down simply to them not being ready too. It isn't some big conspiracy. It isn't some hidden agenda to promote guys Shanahan likes.
DeleteThe rookies that have shown they are ready are playing, and playing a lot. There simply isn't many of them from this class that are ready.
Question the scouting process? Sure. Question the ability of the position coaches to get these guys ready? Ok, I can get that. But I am pretty sure the coaching staff would love nothing more than for these guys to be contributing.
Which brings us to Lance vs Jimmy G. I very much think they should have parted ways with Jimmy G this offseason, and brought in another vet QB to mentor the rookie. But I no longer question why Jimmy G is playing over Lance. Based on everything we are seeing it is now pretty clear to me that the coaches have determined that Trey simply is not ready to handle it. And they don't want to risk ruining him by putting him out there before he is ready. I'm fine with that.
Scooter, wasn't Andy Dalton plan A and Jimmy plan B?
DeleteReally, Scooter/ You think Aaron Banks is a good fit in this 2021 offense? Same goes for Sermon? Same goes for Lance. Kyle never really gave Lance a chance to win a QB competition, that's a fact!
DeleteAnd did Ambrey Thomas look any worse on Sunday than Dre Kirkpatrick did vs the Cardinals, Colts and Seahawks? Kirckpatrick didn't record a single PD during what, 3 or 4 games? But Dre sure committed PI, and he got absolutely steamrolled a few times with a half hearted attempt and tackling a ball carrier/WR.
Because I gotta say, the general consensus is that, while he made mistakes, we saw real growth with Ambrey Thomas on Sunday.
Young players NEED SNAPS! Steve Young understands this. It's a rare exception to the rule when a players ruins his career by making rookie mistakes. This is one reason teams generally don't play their best football early in the season. Some of their struggles have to do with young players who are getting acclimated to their roles, and getting there feet underneath them. And the key early on is making them understand that it's Ok to make mistakes as long as you learn from them and improve. Kyle treats rookies like they aren't ready for the bright lights, unless Kyle has absolutely no choice but to play them, so of course they lose confidence prematurely.
DeleteLance is developing on the VR. Does Young recall how long it took Rodgers to get snaps?
Delete49, Thomas was cooked all day. Lenoir has been getting cooked when he's played too.
DeleteGiving snaps to rookies is great... if they are ready to get them. If they aren't then it isn't a good learning experience.
"It's a rare exception to the rule when a players ruins his career by making rookie mistakes."
No, it isn't. The NFL scrap heap is littered with guys that were thrust into action too early and flamed out.
The concerning part here isn't that the coaches aren't giving these guys snaps. The concerning part is that a team that has historically shown no fear in thrusting young guys into action has felt the 2021 class of rookies can't handle it. It doesn't bode well for this 2021 rookie class as a whole. Hopefully they are better next year.
Exactly Scooter,
DeleteThey are not, not playing guys rookies because of anything other than them not being better than the players in front of them.
Make no mistake, at this point in time, this draft class does not look good.
Fans can certainly question their scouting and decision making especially when in come to value, but I would not question why they are not playing.
That said, Banks has to be starter right away for that pick to make sense from a value perspective. He's not, and it was a bad pick.
Lenore and Thomas cant see the field over the likes of the Barnacle that is Donte Johnson or every other street level free agent because they are far worse than Witherspoon was. The same can be said of Sermon.
While this draft will ultimately be judged by how Lance turns out, this regimes proclivity to misjudge the market and overvalue certain players, has been setting off alarm bells for some time.
And why in the world did they open DEE FORD's IR practice window in early November? That's it! He's done now, rather than giving him another 6 weeks in hopes that he might be healthy enough to contribute if they earn a wildcard!
ReplyDeleteWho in the h_ll is making these roster decisions?
49Reasons, you do know that Shanny described Jimmy G as "automatic" in the overtime win, right? That's as high of a praise you'll ever get from Shanny!
ReplyDeleteOh, you mean the same Jimmy Garoppolo that Kyle has been moving mountains to try to replace since the end of 2019? That Jimmy? The same guy who was on his roster when he went on McVay's podcast and talked about how disappointed he was that the Rams beat them to the punch in acquiring Stafford? That Jimmy?
DeleteThe same Jimmy that Kyle used his best David Copperfield impression to hide during the 2019 postseason? That Jimmy?
The same Jimmy G who's 2021 Niners rank 23rd in 3rd down, money down efficiency, in between the NY Giants and the Texans? That Jimmy?
Yep, if he could stay healthy and find a way to be "automatic" consistently there'd be no reason to get rid of him.
DeleteDon't worry. He'll be gone next year. Until then, go Niners!
Jimmy was clutch on Sunday ... in OVERTIME. I give him props for that, Razor. But how was he thru the first 55 minuets? Maybe it was a different kind of "automatic" when Jimmy threw the ball right to the Bengals Safety - J. Bates, who luckily dropped a ball that Jimmy giftwrapped right into his bread basket, which almost certainly would have been a game winning pick-six?
DeleteEven better, how was Jimmy the week before, in the more important conference game vs a HATED division rival?
Here I go again, bashing Jimmy when I don't really mean to be.
SORRY JIMMY, I don't mean to disrespect who you as a player and/or as a person, because I do have respect for you. Unfortunately, I tend to misappropriate my anger towards Kyle, directing it towards you instead, even though you are a legitimate NFL QB, just not good enough to do the things Kyle needs you to do to take this offense to the next level, in order to compete for a SB on a regular basis.
I don't know why we can't all agree just how hard it is to expect to win a Super Bowl by spending $27M on a QB while simultainiously spending THREE first round picks and a THIRD rounder on another player at the same position?
DeleteI don't know why some fans just won't acknowledge the extra challenge in building a roster in the way that ShanaLynch did this season.
And now Peter King is floating the idea of running it back AGAIN for a SECOND time with Jimmy G in 2022, and apparently nobody in the organization feels like it's important to publicly push back on this preposterous idea?
this isn't fair to either QB, IMO! It's not fair to Jimmy, because he deserves a fresh start without half of the fan base rooting for your future replacement.
And it's not fair to trey, NOR is it good for his confidence, with the organization floating the idea that Trey may not even be ready to play next year, which would means they are admitting that they jumped the gun in trading up for Trey prematurely, in terms of any kind of valid roster building strategy, which is kind of a big deal, especially at a time when the salary cap is still a little tighter than normal.
If that's the case, they have a better chance at actually putting together a true SB caliber roster by trading away Trey Lance this coming offseason, even if they end up losing out on some of the initial trade value over the long run.
If they truly believe jimmy G is their guy, and they beleive they can maintain a Super Bowl window with Jimmy at QB, then stop with the WISHY WASHY BS that seems to be killing team moral!
Did 49ers blow the Trey Lance pick? Considering the amount of draft capital it cost to draft him, it's starting to feel like they did whiff, which would not only be the biggest draft whiff in 49ers history, but also the biggest draft whiff in the history of the NFL!
And BTW guys, when next season rolls around, and the 49ers find themselves in dire need of an additional $26M in cap space, please remember what I've been saying since this past July!
I'd be shocked if Jimmy G was the QB next year... and very concerned about Lance.
DeleteRazor, Daniel Jones, and the NY Giants have a better 3rd down conversion rate than Jimmy.
DeleteThey call it the "MONEY DOWN" for a reason, right? Keep in mind that the 49ers are paying Jimmy $27M, for those money down plays, PLUS an additional 3 firsts & 1 third round pick invested in the position):
Just to give us some context, here is a small sample list of some of the teams, including their QB's, who have better 3rd down conversion rates than the 49ers.
23) 49ERS - Lance/Garoppolo: 37.3%
22) NY GIANTS - D. Jones/M. Glennon: 37.5%
19) NY JETS - Z. Wislon/M. White/J. Flacco: 38.4%
17) WASHINGTON - T. Heinicke/K. Allen: 38.8%
Safe to say that the 49ers are getting the least bang for their buck of any team, maybe in league history, out of their QB's on 3rd downs, especially considering they have an electrically athletic Trey Lance, who at least in theory, ought to give Kyle ADDITIONAL OPTIONS ON 3rd DOWN!
So that's a huge problem, isn't it? And it's one reason why the 49ers basically only have one formula that they can lean on win games, and that's just not enough!
In fact, this might be the single biggest problem with the 49ers current setup at QB, and it's likely 100% the result of the way teams are defending against them on 3rd down (all downs really). The FACT of the matter is, when you aren't especially accurate (due in part to inconsistent mechanics), and you don't have the arm talent to attack all areas of the football field, it makes life easier on opposing defenses, especially on 3rd down. That's just a fact.
And we've seen how Jimmy's lack of mobility makes using those zone/read concepts which most teams are using in some form and fashion to their advantage in 2021, it's easy enough to see why this team struggles to move the chains during significant stretches of just about every single game, regardless of the opponent.
I agree Scooter, so why not make it clear to everyone how much confidence the 49ers have in their young QB, even if they need to stretch the truth a little bit?
DeleteGod knows that Kyle has no problem .... stretching the truth, if he thinks it gives him some kind of "psychological advantage", or "gamesmanship" (in Kyle's case I call it IGNIS FATUUS, or delusion, fantasy, figment, chimera, shangri-la, or even a complete fable, but whatever synonym you want to use, the bottom line is that it's usually a LIE, or straight MISREPRESENTATION of the facts), whatever you want to call it, why does he let this nonsense float around in the ether, without pushing back and making their intentions known?
It's almost like the Mac Jones CHARADE all over again! The Mac Jones charade that, BTW, didn't do anyone any favors, and in fact it probably did more harm than good, when you consider people are still questioning whether Kyle even wanted to draft Trey in the first place, 8 months later.
How does that help the situation in any way? Surely Kyle understands that there is a divide among the 49ers' hardcore fanbase, right?
Kyle Shanahan is the most MADDENING 49ers' coach of any kind, I have ever paid attention to in my 40+ years of following the Niners, and it's not even close!
GRRRRR!
"And now Peter King is floating the idea of running it back AGAIN for a SECOND time with Jimmy G in 2022, and apparently nobody in the organization feels like it's important to publicly push back on this preposterous idea?"
DeleteDude, what does that accomplish?
Publicly saying there is no way Jimmy comes back is just stupid. It undermines Jimmy in the locker room, gives him less to play for, and undercuts trade value.
It's nearly impossible anyway given the teams caps space. 10 Million with only 32 players signed. Even paying league minimum to the 21 new signees would put them over the cap.
Calm down we don't need to overreact to every little rumor put out there.
Any word on Eli?
ReplyDeleteHaven't heard a peep. If it were me I'd sit him one more week because I really don't think we'll need him against Atlanta.
DeleteWould like to see Deebo get some rest too.
DeleteCap projected to be 208.2 million.
ReplyDelete"The NFL's salary cap for 2022 will rise to $208.2 million, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported, expanding by $25.7 million compared to this season. That is the maximum amount agreed upon by the NFL and NFL Players Association in May."
DeleteWell isn't that something? So, the 49ers basically blew their entire 2022 salary cap raise, on brining Jimmy G. back for one last hurrah in 2021 .... and what do they have to show for it right now?
Well, they are in THIRD place in their division and they are ONE game above .500 overall, and they may, or may not earn a wildcard birth in a year where the NFC has only 5 teams who are considered above average league-wide.
The 49ers will now likely go into 2022 with a QB who is still basically a rookie, because he's been running the 49ers scout team during the week, while Sudfeld takes most of the second team reps, and Trey has only started 1 game in over two and a half years, and hasn't taken a regular season snap in over TWO full months!
NOT ONE FRICKEN SNAP, over the last EIGHT games!
And hey, don't you worry about the reports of Trey Lance losing his confidence as training camp progressed, because if you haven't heard, the 49ers are still considering bringing Jimmy back against next season, which is bound to go a long ways towards boosting the dynamic, 3rd overall draft pick's confidence.
But the good news, if we can call it that, is that there is ample evidence that a young athlete's confidence doesn't really matter when it comes to how well he plays, right?
"The way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear and get a record of successful experiences behind you" - William Jennings Bryan
Where are you getting the info that Sudfeld is getting the second team reps?
Delete49Reasons - Just think Aaron Rodgers; I think he turned out just fine myself.
DeleteAlso, I love that you used this quote as part of your argument.
Delete"The way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear and get a record of successful experiences behind you" - William Jennings Bryan
I don't think this supports your argument as much as you think it does. That last part of the quote is crucial.
I hear what you are saying, undercenter, but BRET FAVRE was a future Hall of Fame QB, and a #X Super Bowl MVP! Not only that, Green Bay only spent the 24th overall pick on Rodgers, while the 49ers used the 3rd overall pick which they acquired in exchange for their own #12 pick in 2021, their 1st RND pick in 2022, their 1st RND pick in 2023, and an additional 3rd round pick in the upcoming draft!
DeleteThat's a big difference. If Jimmy was a 3-time Super Bowl MVP, I'd be sending the Italian Stallion love letters, and naming my children after him (I never had any boys, but if I did, I'd name my first one JOE).
Well, the love letters might be a bridge too far, but I'm serious about naming my first born child after #16!
Oops, I meant Favre was a *3X NFL MVP, not Super Bowl MVP.
DeleteAlso, Brett Favre didn't overthrow a wide open - Andre "Bad Moon" Rison, rather he threw a 54 yard strike to him for a TD, on the second play of Super Bowl XXXI, in route to victory.
I am not sure what you mean, Scooter. It's just like everything else in life, experience is crucial. I remember one of the first quotes I ever heard in regards to this as a child was - "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. For some reason people are under the impression that - if a rookie struggles as he develops, that he will somehow suffer long term psychological trauma, potentially ruining his career in it's infancy.
DeleteI don't subscribe to this theory, one bit. As a genuine rule, as long as his talent is genuine, and the athlete feels like he has the support of his coaches, as well as his teammates (specifically the HC, and perhaps teammates whom he looks up to) he's going to eventually succeed, as long as he has enough talent around him. And the fact of the matter is, it's rare that a QB is drafted into such an established, and talented team like Trey Lance and Mac Jones were. That's the main difference between the 49ers, and the Patriots, as compared to the Jaguars, Bears, and the Jets. Strong minded athletes who feel supported, tend to learn from their rookie mistakes, and they can usually always use those struggles to make themselves better over time. And if they are fortunate enough to be drafted into a talented team around them, and have an offensive coach who is willing to do whatever is necessary to give them their best chance to succeed, they can in fact have a great deal of rookie success, as we see in NE. Mac Jones threw THREE passes the other night, in the Patriots convincing win VS the Bills, and Mac completed TWO of them.
Ah, so you are believer that all experience is good experience.
DeleteCan't say as I believe that. Especially in a pursuit that has so much riding on confidence. It's very easy for athletes to get gun-shy when they struggle early in their careers. And it can definitely set them back.
geeze does that poster go on and on
