Week 14 Post Match Review: 49ers at Bengals

By Scooter_McG

The 49ers scraped home against the Bengals in overtime, with a walk-off TD pass from Jimmy Garoppolo to Brandon Aiyuk sealing a nail-biter. The game was a lot closer than it had any right to be, but the Bengals shook off a torrid and mistake-filled first half while the 49ers offense slumbered in the second.

In the end though it is the result that matters. The 49ers beat a team with a record above .500 for just the second time this season, and it lifts them to a 7-6 record and a one game buffer in the race for the 6th seed in the NFC. The win was especially vital for a 49ers team that lost embarrassingly last week to the Seahawks, and had some key players out injured, as well as others that were playing through injury.

Here's what stood out to me.

Turnovers prove the difference

Whoever said it is better to give than receive was clearly not talking about a game of football. The Bengals took a leaf out of the 49ers 2021 playbook and gifted the 49ers the ball deep in their own territory on two occasions in the first half through muffed punt returns. The 49ers would convert those mistakes into 10 valuable first half points. A good thing, too, as outside of those short fields the 49ers only had one drive of note in the first half, which was capped by a Deebo Samuel 27 yard scamper for a TD around the right edge (which was well blocked by Kittle and Compton).

Aside from those muffed punt returns, the Bengals had some other near misses in the first half too that were saved by the bounce of the ball, as well as an INT called back due to a hands to the face call that likely didn't impact the play, some key drops (including one on a would be TD to Chase), and a lucky non-call on what should have been DPI on Kittle deep downfield. It was an error-ridden first half by the Bengals that gave the 49ers control of the game despite not really earning it.

Second half blues

The 49ers looked to be in complete control of the game at half time, leading 17-6 at the break. But for a second straight week the 49ers offense struggled to get anything going in the second stanza while the defense had issues containing the Bengals through the air. The Bengals were able to get back into the game and level the scores at 20 a piece late in the 4th quarter to send it to extra time.

While it didn't prove costly in this one, the inability to put a game away, as well as going long stretches where they let the opposition dominate a game, is something that has plagued the 49ers for much of the 2021 season. The 49ers have to do a better job of playing 60 minutes of football, in all phases.

Clutch Jimmy

It may not have been a Good Jimmy performance per se, in fact Jimmy G and the 49ers offense struggled to get much going for most of the game. That wasn't all on Jimmy though - the running game was bottled up for the most part bar for a few chunk runs which put them in 3rd and long situations often. Nor was it a Bad Jimmy performance - he avoided turnovers and came up with some nice passes throughout the game. In fact Jimmy was quite good on first down in this game, it was the ability to convert third and longs that let the team down (again, not all on Jimmy as the pass protection failed to hold up a number of times too).

It was, however, a Clutch Jimmy performance. After the Bengals locked the scores up at 20-20, Jimmy drove the 49ers downfield into Bengals territory to give Robbie Gould a shot to be the hero. The drive included a 19 yard George Kittle catch on 3rd and long to get them in FG range. Unfortunately for Jimmy and the 49ers, Gould's attempt sailed wide right.

Then after the Bengals scored a FG on the opening drive of OT, Jimmy G marched the 49ers 75 yards for the TD, most of which came from his arm as he completed all six of his passes for 78 yards and the TD (Kittle had a false start early in the drive). The pass along the right sideline to Jauan Jennings was impressive, as he trusted his receiver to make the contested play but also put it where the defender didn't have much of a shot at it.

The People's Tight End

George Kittle proved again why he is the most dynamic TE in the league. He may not be putting up numbers like a Travis Kelce over the course of the season, but his ability to take over a game and make big plays is second to none from the TE spot. Today Kittle had 13 catches for 151 yards and a TD, including a number of big plays in critical moments. Add that to his ability in the running game and there is no other TE I'd rather have when healthy.

Secondary woes

The loss of Emmanuel Moseley may prove costly for the 49ers. Ambry Thomas made the start in his place this week, and to say he looked shaky would be generous. He was responsible for the hands to the face call in the first half that cost Ward his third INT of the season. He didn't learn from his mistake as he was flagged for the same infringement later taking a sack away from Bosa. Both of the Bengals TDs came on his side of the field, one of which definitely was against his coverage (with another he got away with due to a Chase drop). And he consistently failed to get correct depth in zone, leaving spaces wide open behind him.

Ryans tried to help him out as much as possible with safety help over the top, but as a result it left the middle of the field exposed which the Bengals started to take advantage of in the second half.

This performance made it pretty clear why Thomas has struggled to see the field as a rookie - he still has a lot of learning to do and leaving him out there runs a very real risk of ruining him.

Big picture

This may not have been a must win match for the 49ers given the state of the NFC, but it certainly was an important one from the point of view of strengthening the 49ers hold on a playoff spot. Heading into the 49ers game there were five teams sitting on 6 wins and 7 losses, and had the 49ers lost the 49ers would have made it six, with those teams vying for two playoff spots.

Instead the 49ers find themselves as the lone 7 win and 6 loss team in the NFC, giving them a one game lead over their rivals for the 6th seed.

Of course, this win just makes the loss to the Seahawks all the more frustrating in a way - with the Rams playing the number one seed Cardinals on Monday there is a very real chance the 49ers could have been tied with the Rams by the end of the week's games had they taken care of business last week.

  1. Good that we won but we should have closed it faster.
    Great game by Kittle.
Fantastic job by Jimmy G and Aiyuk to take the victory home.

  2. Hope they don't take the Falcons lightly. Last time we came back from an east coast game to face the Falcons we lost, and this time they're better, and they're coming in on a playoff lifeboat!

  3. Jimmy G threw 41 times while running just 23 times. Just as I surmised.

  4. This was by far JG best game of his career. He didn't have his best stuff; he was under constant pressure and made clutch throw, he led two game winning drives, didn't turn the ball over (he did drop it once). This was the JG I was expecting all year. Stats don't tell the story of his game.

Where would the Niners be without Deebo and Kittle. Jennings will be next year number 3 receiver.

  5. Excellent summary Scooter. While Tom Compton made a few mistakes, glad you called out the block from Compton on the Deebo TD. That TD does not happen without his downfield block.

I actually had this game as a loss because I've watched some of the Bengals' games and they are a playoff team. Impressed with Burrows too, he is reckless but a gunslinger and will be a Top 5 QB in a couple of years. A good win against a good team.

The next three games we need to split 2-1. Titans on a short week is going to be tough. So Falcons and Texans become must wins to challenge the Rams for 5th spot.

5th spot could mean the difference between playing @cowboys (against whom we match up better) vs @Tampa Bay/@Green Bay.

    1. Right...Compton gives some bad and some good each game. :)

More surprisingly, the drop off from McGlinchey to Compton is not too big for me.

Would be interesting to see how Compton's next contract plays out.

    2. You ain't just whistling Dixie. Compton is ranked #2 in the NFL for run blocking ahead of Williams but dead last among starting OT's in pass pro.

      Delete
    3. At least based on your stat, we agree that Compton is better at run blocking than McGlinchey was (which allegedly was McG's forte).

We'll see where Compton is at the end of the season with respect to Pass blocking.

  7. MY take: BIG WIN, but .......

This was a big win, and there is something to be said about snatching victory out of the jaws of defeat, after snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory, all in one game! Theis win was most important in terms of team moral, and less important in terms of playoff seeding. But, as they say in the arena of pro sports - a win is a win, and in the NFL, wins aren't easy to come by, especially on the road, and especially for a run first team who was without their lead, bell cow lead RB.

The biggest question for me during this entire Jimmy Garoppolo era (after the injury) is, can the 49ers win a big game if he needs to throw the football 40+ times. Well, they won a big game on Sunday with Jimmy doing exactly that.

But .... if we are all keeping it 100% real, Jimmy's overall performance in terms playing the QB position thru 4 QTR's, wasn't particularly good, and if you need something tangible to back that up, his 39.4 Total QBR (a QBR of 50.0 is exactly average) should be proof enough. I don't know anyone who could watch that entire game and not come away feeling like The Bengals have the superior QB, and that's a problem in a QB driven league!

For all intent and purpose, the 49ers offense looked like the same team yesterday (at least offensively), as they've been for the vast majority of this season. The only real difference this week, was that it was their opponent who imploded on special teams, and not the 49ers for a change. More than once the Bengals gifted the 49ers with beautiful field position right after Jimmy and the 49ers offense sputtered and came to a screeching halt, due to INCONSISTANT QB play, which helped result in 33% 3rd down efficiency. Some of it is on the 49ers OL, but Jimmy had better overall protection than Burrow, and Burrow was more consistent and simply made more plays.

For 55 minutes yesterday, the 49ers were the same underachieving, chronically inconsistent offense that they have been all season long. The main takeaway nearly every Sunday, is that the 49ers are a chronically underachieving team offensively, so it's hard to conclude that this is just who they are in 2021!

Bottom line: The 49ers offense is middle-of-the-pack, for reasons that seem glaringly obvious to me. Kyle wants to be a run first team, because that's who he is at his core, and probably always will be. But it's really, really, really hard to run the football consistently when the opposing defense aren't concerned with defending the entire field, and don't believe your starting QB can make enough plays to beat you, especially the explosive, downfield, game-changing pass plays. UNTIL THAT CHANGES, this team will never reach it's full potential offensively, and that makes winning a Super Bowl, especially as a west coast wildcard team, a very hard thing to even imagine!

    1. The Bengals handed this game to the 49ers in the first half. Should have been a blowout win if the 49ers played well, but they didn't, and in the end needed to come back in OT to take it.

We've been on the opposite side of that story a few times this season so was nice to have one go our way. But certainly shouldn't be kidding ourselves that the 49ers won because they were better - they won because the Bengals made way too many mistakes and the 49ers didn't.

But... when you put this in the context of who was missing and who was playing hurt... this was a massive result for the 49ers. Jagged a win when really they should have been beaten.

    2. Jack Hammer would beg to differ but I never was a fan of Garcia's unorthodox mechanics or limitations at the position. I would take Jimmy G over Garcia everyday of the week and twice on Sundays.

    3. Scooter, yep those receivers for the Bengals were a bad matchup for our depleted secondary, yet Ryans was able to devise a plan that gave them a chance to win.

    4. Ryans was on a hiding to nothing in this one. Saleh failed his test with Allen last year, Ryans passed his with Thomas.

    5. Great point, Scooter. Ryan's did his best David Copperfield yesterday, and it was a huge factor. DeMeco Ryan's is a keeper! The 49ers future looks bright. I just want to enjoy this season for what it is, but then I have to read another Peter King article about how the 49ers brass might run it back with Jimmy again next season, and I feel like Kyle and John are punking me again, just like during the draft, and it's sapping every ounce of enjoyment out of what should be an enjoyable end of an up and down season. Sure, the Super Bowl is always the goal, but I am really trying to just enjoy it for what it is, and making the best out of sending Jimmy G off with one last postseason hurrah, even if it's as a big time longshot as a west coast wildcard team.

    6. Look at the Cap. They have 10 Million in cap space and only 32 to players signed through next year. The only way you keep Jimmy in that scenario is if you restructure his contract.

There is a huge value in this win, doesn't show on any stat line. I have a feeling the B team has been put to rest due to this type of game.

  9. THIS WOULD BE HARD TO BELIEVE!
*49ers Retaining Jimmy Garoppolo in 2022 Would be Ludicrous.
A victory Monday for the 49ers just can't be savored. Peter King of NBC Sports has reported that the 49ers have not yet decided how to handle their quarterback situation in 2022. King cites that he has been told that the coaching staff is "impressed" with how Jimmy Garoppolo has handled the 49ers trying to replace him this year by his professionalism.

    AND THIS IS WHY!
The 49ers punted on three straight drives to begin the second half. Their two touchdowns in the first half were thanks to turnovers from the Bengals. Shanahan seems terrified of letting or trusting Jimmy G to throw the ball down the field. He had a brutal sack-fumble that ended a drive.
Then, of course, that near interception at the end of the game. But, before that, Garoppolo missed Kyle Juszczyk wide open in the end zone that would’ve iced the game.

Every week, the only thing that changes for Garoppolo is whether the defender catches the ball. They didn’t catch it this week, the team was fortunate for another opportunity. Garoppolo gave Kittle and Aiyuk chances and also added a perfect back-shoulder throw to Jauan Jennings late in the game.
Inconsistent Jimmy is here to stay. He did come up limping after the dropped interception. Kyle Shanahan speaks Monday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. PT. We’ll see if Garoppolo is limited in practice or if anything pops up. He finished the game, likely on adrenaline. Garoppolo’s best throw of the game came when he threaded the needle to Kittle to convert a third down, setting up Aiyuk’s score.

BUT A WIN IS A WIN, SO I'LL TAKE IT. BUT PLEASE, DON'T TELL ME WE'LL HAVE TO PUT UP WITH IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR!

    1. If they keep Jimmy G around it would have to be on a reduced contract, surely. And he would have to come back with the expectation he would be the backup all things going well. If they keep him around as the starter then it means they believe they whiffed on Lance.

      Delete
  10. Scooter, I don't think the plan has changed and I doubt it will. Lynch and Shanny would love to win the Super Bowl this year, but I think they'd be very happy to win a playoff game; trading Jimmy for a 2nd with a chance to become a 1st. They could then lock up Bosa and Samuel to long term contracts.

"If they keep him around as the starter then it means they believe they whiffed on Lance." ABSOLUTELY!
THAT'S WHY THE 9ERS TRADED 3 FIRSTS AND A 3RD ROUND DRAFT PICK FOR LACE....RIGHT?
Because KS and JL believed they could win a SB with JG, right? And that's the definition of FAILURE?
BTW: How will keeping JG around on a reduced contract, make for a happy JG camper and not create divisions in the locker room?

Razor: Seriously, do you believe the 9ers could get a 2nd round pick for JG? IMO, maybe if he won a SB, but not one or two playoff wins!

    2. I think if Jimmy leads this team to a playoff win by throwing it 40 times when they can't run, yes sir.

You're intelligent enough to know the 9ers lose when JG throws the ball 30 times, let alone 40!
As I wrote in my last post, "the only thing that changes for Garoppolo is whether the defender catches the ball. They didn’t catch it this week, the team was fortunate for another opportunity."
BTW: The chances of that happening in the playoffs is, as they old adage goes...SLIM AND NONE!

  12. The way the league is now, Garoppolo can get a team with decent talent to the playoffs. So a 2 is possible imo. It's not giving up the house, after all. Even a conditional 2 the second year. I'd like to see Shanahan start designing runs for him. That's a side defenses never see, but I think it's there and would make him more dangerous.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be more than happy if the 9ers could get a second round draft pick for JG! I guess I would ask you WHO do you believe would give up a second for him?

    3. I'd like to see the team roll him out a bit more often rather than just leaving him in the pocket all the time. Especially on 3rd and long situations where Compton/ Brunskill become a liability.

"He shouldn't have to run with the Yac Bros., plus Mitchell at his disposal."
Right! With Mitchell healthy, the 9ers run the ball, because KS believes in a RUN FIRST philosophy...And it is no secret that he doesn't trust JG to NOT THROW INT'S.
Now think how dynamic the 9er offense would be with a
QB that could & would make every throw in KS's playbook, not just the center of the field!

    6. George- I call out "bootleg" all the time at Levi's or at home.... always falls on deaf ears!

It is going to be an interesting offseason with a few QB's available- not sure what college QB's might be ready.... but there are quite a few teams that would be happy with JimmyG- who knows, maybe the 49ers showcase Lance and trade him instead if Jimmy gets them a playoff W. On that note, not sure I would want to face Dallas over GB and TB by seasons end.

      Delete
    7. Scooter
I agree. I hear people say he wasn't mobile enough. BUT THAT'S NOT TRUE! While the brace did affect his mobility, even then he was capable of rolling out. I wondered if maybe KS was concerned about not reading the defense and his accuracy?

    8. Dallas is the weakest team out of those 3.

Jimmy will run when the game is on the line in the playoffs if he has to.

Trade Lance? No way in hell. Lance will be the starting quarterback in 2022. Jimmy will be traded. Bosa will command $30 million and Samuel $20 million and they can't afford to not extend both players.

  13. You're right Razor.... and watching Kyler make plays, and having chased Wilson around for 9 years, the 49ers know that Lance is the best option for the future. Sad to think Wilson may be gone and now the 49ers have to deal with Kyler for a few- he may be the first player to garner $40/yr the way he is developing.

I would like to think Bosa would be closer to $25/yr..... and hopefully these guys will be happy enough to consider the 5% discount (we need our players to have young kids in school and wives that like the area!- or get them involved with the tech sector like the Warriors have done over the years).

Rams played well w/out Ramsey and Higbee- I think they get hot and hope the final game isn't pivotal for the 49ers. I think if the 49ers offense starts clicking, they can compete w anyone... therein, seeing it is an away game for the playoffs, even GB w bad weather could work in their favor.

    ReplyDelete

    1. 5% discount in a state that taxes them more? Not likely. Btw does anyone know if Teams could structure contracts for greater earnings for “travel inconveniences” or something like that? Ie paying players more for away games to help with the tax issue.

  16. "Oh yeah, Jimmy's our leader," Brandon Aiyuk, who caught the game-winning score from Garoppolo, told Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer. "His ability to lead is great. Everybody shows up for him, we all feed off of him. And we just take it week by week. We know how this league works, we know exactly how it goes, and we enjoy everything the week that we have together. And that's about it. We see him as the leader of the team, and I'm gonna ride behind him."

Even though lots of Niner fans can't wait to get rid of JG it's nice to see the people whose opinion really matter stand behind him.

When the time comes who backs up Lance?
