Meet Your NFC Offensive Player Of The Week

 George "Freaking" Kittle!

Word on the street is Dee Ford is set to be released. I can't hardly believe it because it's only going to save the 49ers $2 million next year, and leave them buried with close to an $11 million dead cap hit. Do you believe this story? I do not because once released that $11 million hits the books. They'll need to restructure someone else to get that $11 million before they'll be able to release him, right?

  1. Ford has come out and said the story is false.

    1. No wonder it didn't make financial sense.

    2. On Tuesday night, Pro Football Talk reported that veteran pass rusher Dee Ford informed teammates that he expected the San Francisco 49ers to release him.
"Per a ((league source)), Ford has informed teammates that he expects to be released as soon as Wednesday," wrote Mike Florio. Florio added, "As Ford tells it to colleagues, he expects that the team will simply cut its losses and move on."

According to NFL reporter Mike Silver, besides Ford speaking to his teammates, that report is entirely false.
"The articles saying I told my teammates I expected to be released are false," Ford told Silver via a text message. "I'm going to be getting rehab and taking the time needed to get back and I was saying goodbye to the boys because I wouldn't be in the building. We are still rolling. We're just taking the time needed."

  2. While you never know whats true and whats not, we do know this is what KS said.

    * On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said he wasn't optimistic that Ford would play for the 49ers again this season.
"I believe we've got to make [a decision] by Wednesday, and we'll see what goes," Shanahan said. "That's something that I never can predict. But I'll be surprised if he's back. I think we'll just have to continue playing without him."

Well today is Wednesday, so we'll see if Dee Ford is cut! If he's NOT CUT, Mike Florio (of Pro Football Talk), has got some explaining to do!

    1. I think KS was referring to the fact that he will be placed once again on IR and that means he is done for the season.

    2. "This is a chronic issue," Dee Ford said in OCTOBER. "Yeah, my disc may have had a new herniation in my L5; I think that's the disc ... If guys have these issues in their knees, our knees go bad. Once you degenerate so much muscle, you get into ligaments and tendons ... we all feel it. We get older, and you start to feel your knees start popping, clicking, and cracking. Well, that was my spine."

YIKES ... I think it's safe to say it is time for the 49ers to move on!

It wasn't financially feasible to release Ford this season if there was any chance he could contribute. That changes after this season, so if Dee Ford isn't coming back down the stretch this season, he's almost certainly never coming back. I am pretty sure the 49ers can save a little more than $2M in cap space (dead money) in 2022, if they release him, so I doubt the question is whether or not he'll be gone after this season, I think that's a given considering how serious and chronic his injury seems to be. The only real question seems to be when do the 49ers release him ... now, or after the season.

What a shame. When healthy, the 49ers had the best bookend tandem of DE's in the NFL. Boy was that a costly trade, but at least he helped them get to a Super Bowl.

The thing I don't really understand, is why they opened his practice window in mid-November, unless they knew he had absolutely no chance to come back for the postseason. Why not give him another month of healing, and then open his window with the hope he might be able to help them if they make the playoffs?

I'm guessing there must be a logical reason, but it seems like another strange personnel decision to me.

    3. It's safe to say that Ford and Jimmy G will no longer be on the team next year. One will be traded and one will be released.

  3. "3. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (UP 4)
    Best-graded: T Trent Williams | 99.0
    Worst-graded: G Daniel Brunskill | 65.2

Trent Williams now carries a 99.0 overall PFF grade through Week 14. The higher up the scale a grade goes, the harder it is to move to the next increment. Needless to say, his current mark would be the best single-season grade from an offensive tackle. The next best marks belong to Jonathan Ogden and Joe Thomas — both Hall of Famers. It would also rank as the best single-season grade achieved by any player at any position over the past 15 years.

Williams has been a dominant force this season and should win Offensive Player of the Year if the voters for such awards acknowledged offensive linemen. He is by far the best player on this line, and the unit doesn't really have a weak link."

The third best? My eyes, oh my eyes. If the Niner O-line is third best then I sure feel sorry for the rest of the teams below them.

    1. I think they're ranked 8th and 7th defensively and offensive. That's what you want heading into the playoffs.

    2. PFF grading at its finest.

I imagine a lot of it comes down to run block grading. The right side of the OL can't possibly have high grades for pass pro.

    3. Yah, I agree with that. I don't think you can be considered a top 10 OL when you having a glaring issue in pass protection on one side with Brunskill & Compton, so I'd put the 49ers OL somewhere between 12 & 15, BUT .... I do have to make a point to admit that Compton isn't actually a total liability, like I was going off on him for a month ago, but in my defense it's much harder to judge run blocking on a more casual basis, than pass protection, and so of course he was looking extremely suspect, but dang if he's not a pretty darn good run blocker, so I gotta give him his due for that.

The biggest issue is that when you're two weakest OL's are on the same side of the line, it becomes a bigger weakness, maybe by a factor of two or some kind of mathematics like that, and that's the part that PFF gets wrong on this, I think.

Come on Scooter, the right side of the 9ers O-line is not that bad.....For a college team! lol

  4. With about 3:25 minutes left in the first Quarter of the Bengal game. There was a pass from Burrow to Boyd out in the flat. Boyd juked a couple of players then slipped to the ground and fumbled the ball. The Refs called him down, but he wasn't touched down it was a live ball. Refs blew it and Niners replay people missed it and I am thinking most fans missed it.

  5. Cardinals Hopkins out for the year. They "hope" he can return for the playoffs. Sounds like knee injury that will require surgery to get right. That's huge.

Hopkins is seeking a second opinion with Dr. Neal ElAttrache. It is still uncertain whether Hopkins will need surgery. But either way, his regular is believed to have to come an end.

  6. Big loss....... AJ Green can't carry them, nor Conner, but Kirk, Moore and Ertz will certainly be able to step up, unfortunately. Makes the balance of the season a lot more interesting now, per seeding.

  7. Bosa rushed from either side at almost a 50-50 split. Helps stress the O line.

The most interesting point I learned in this regard earlier this week is that it is Bosa who makes the decision about switching sides during the game, not Kocurek or Ryans. I really like this empowerment of a star player by Ryans.

Bosa plays the entire game at the same level -- just amazing fitness level. IIRC, over half is sacks have come after the third quarter.

He likely will be the first $30M/year pass rusher.
