Week 11 Post Match Review: 49ers at Jaguars

By Scooter_McG

This game had the potential to be a trap game for the 49ers. If they'd played it two weeks ago it probably would have been. But say this about the embarrassment against the Cardinals - it was the humbling loss the 49ers clearly needed to learn that their attitude was not good enough to be serious competitors in the NFL. Hopefully it didn't come so late in the season, and after too many defeats, to make the playoffs in what is becoming a crowded fight for spots.

Instead this game was a dominant display from a 49ers team that has rediscovered the tough minded mentality that saw them surprise the NFL in 2019. Over the past two weeks the 49ers have said goodbye to the silly little errors that had plagued them through the first 8 games of the year. For the second straight week they committed no turnovers, had no clear drops, and comprehensively won the penalties. For the second straight week it was the opposition making those mistakes. And for the second straight week it was precipitated by a hard-nosed, run first offensive philosophy that was happy to grind their way down the field mixing in some dynamic runs from their number one playmaker Deebo Samuel.

As was the case in the game against the Rams, the 49ers first offensive drive was a statement of the physicality the team intended to play with, and showcased their focused and grinding mentality. The drive lasted more than 13 game minutes and 20 plays. It was littered with small gaining run plays as the Jaguars set their stall on stopping the run. While on paper those runs won't look like much, they were just as important as the handful of explosive runs by Deebo and the efficient passing of Jimmy G as they kept the offense inching forward to set up 3rd and short and took energy out of the defense. A nice conversion on 3rd and 12 to Aiyuk was also a key play early in the drive, as were some critical penalties against the Jaguars to extend the drive when it should have been stalled.

While they would eventually need to settle for a FG (after Jimmy G missed a wide open Wilson for what should have been an easy TD), the opening drive was critical to sapping the energy and confidence of the Jaguars defense.

The defense also did its part. They started with a great play by Ebukam to drop the RB behind the line of scrimmage, and broke up the deep ball on third down without giving away the dreaded DPI. On the second defensive series Josh Norman forced the fumble on the first play which Warner recovered.

After the opening drive, forcing the three and out put a tired Jaguars defense back on the field quickly. The 49ers took advantage with a rapid fire, 7 play scoring drive that started with a nice catch and run for Aiyuk for around 20 yards, followed by a series of big runs, including a long TD run by Deebo.

After the fumble recovery the 49ers went on a second straight 7 play scoring drive, this time benefitting from some more ill discipline from the Jaguars on what should have been a stop on third down, but instead saw their starting safety Rayshawn Jenkins ejected for throwing a punch at Jauan Jennings. The drive would end with a nice short pass to Aiyuk for the TD.

Those first five drives (3 offensive, two defensive) put the 49ers well in control of the game right from the get go, up 17-0. They would allow the Jaguars to get a FG late in the half, as well as a FG of their own, to end the half leading 20-3.

It was a half of complete and utter dominance by the 49ers, where they won in every facet of the game. The type of half you expect to see from a playoff calibre team against a 2-7 unit with a rookie QB. And the type of half you expect from a team playing with a high level of confidence and commitment.

The start of the second half would see more of the same, with a defensive stop and then another TD drive on offense that was highlighted by three big plays by Deebo - a 15 yard catch and 2 big runs - finished by a red zone TD for Kittle that makes it 3 in 3 weeks.

It wasn't until the 49ers brought their backups in that the Jaguars were able to score a TD late in the 4th quarter, on a series that was predicated on picking on the rookie Ambry Thomas. The dominant win in fact enabled the 49ers to get most of their rookies some game time once they were up 30-3 - the first time this season the team has been able to rest its starters while in front.

Other Notables

Nick Bosa was able to rack up two sacks in this one, taking his tally into double digits on the season for the first time in his career. Aiyuk also had a very nice game as he continues to see his usage increase, catching all 7 of his targets for 85 yards and a TD.

Deebo Samuel only caught one pass this week, for 15 yards, with only two targets. But his impact on the game was still significant as he led the team with 79 rushing yards on 8 carries and TD. The transition to using him more as a RB over the past two games has highlighted just how important it is to find ways to get the ball in the hands of your best playmakers.

This win marked the second straight week the 49ers ran the ball more then 40 times, and finished with a run to pass ratio of around 2:1. There can be no mistake now that Shanahan has realised the template for success involves sticking with the run even when the defense tries to take it away. The same template that saw the 49ers go on their 2019 Super Bowl run.

Looking Forward

With the Panthers and Saints losing, and 49ers, Vikings and Eagles winning, the race for the 6th and 7th NFC wildcard spots got a whole lot more interesting this weekend. The 49ers host the Vikings next week in what should be a much tougher contest than the Jaguars and looks to be critical in deciding the playoff picture.

  1. The game against the Vikings is a two game swing for the winner.

    1. You had a feeling it would be a blowout! How do you see the Viking game going?

    2. Too early, Niners playing at home is a major concern. This is a must win game for both teams as it would enhance both teams' playoff chances greatly.

    3. I think we beat the Vikings. By how much? I have no idea.

    4. The Vikings game is going to come down to whether the pass rush can get to Cousins consistently. He's got great WR's, but his Oline is not the greatest in PP and he tends to wilt under pressure. Offensively, just keep the running game going and good things will happen.

    5. On defense, yeah, pressuring Cousins will be important, but I think the play of the secondary will determine whether they can slow down the offense. If they can't put the clamps on Jefferson and Thielen then they will be in some trouble.

But I think what will ultimately determine the game will be the 49ers running game against the Vikings 31st ranked run defense (in terms of avg per run play), and then how the 49ers take advantage of the Vikings defense if they are setting their stall to stop the run (which they no doubt will).

Basically, the 49ers win if their offense keeps rolling and the defense can make a few stops.

  2. Personal foul Jennings earned was brought about through fatigue and frustration; culminating with a physical block by Jauan.

Bosa isn't human. 10 sacks coming off an ACL? Might have to reNickname him The Quadfather!

    3. Funny thing is I don't think he is playing quite as well as he did as a rookie. I think he still has some improvement post knee injury to come.

Another excellent 9er game synopsis scooter. I believe that you've missed your true calling!

"This game had the potential to be a trap game for the 49ers. If they'd played it two weeks ago it probably would have been!" BUT IT WASN'T! The 9ers stopped reading their pressing clippings and realized rolling the ball out onto the field would NOT get them an automatic win! KS also remembered the key to his past success was running the rock and smash mouth ball control football. he results = 2 wins and back in the hunt for a play off spot!
BTW: booked a flight to Vegas next weekend. (thinking of you). Will place a bet on 9ers beat the Vikings and if I win, will bet the 9ers win the remaining 5 games
      and order some Ravin Pate...lol

Nick Bosa now has 10 sacks in 10 games this season. That’s incredible for a player coming off an ACL injury. #49ers

    7. Yeah at this rate, Bosa can be the comeback player of the year..Incredible!

Arden Key also quietly putting together a nice complimentary season so far. He is upto 3 sacks.

  3. Nice post roundup Scooter.
Jimmy played well, but I believe that he left one TD on the field. I thought that it may have been just a little too early in the game to get cute on the attempted pass to Trent Williams in the end zone. I was hoping that Shanahan would go for the TD on their first series especially given how to offensive line had been moving the ball.
But none of these plays tipped the outcome of the game, so all is well that ends well, as it's been said.
    Overall, nice win.

    1. Wasnt the TW attempt followed up by a TD to Kittle?

And the TW attempt showed they had zero concern with the Jags, it was telling Jax that they've lost already.

      Delete
    2. Two defenders were covering TW with a third defender moving in quickly. It's nice that we were able to score, but this play call had a strong probability to backfire. Now, these type of plays seem to work for Andy Reid.
      For Shanahan not so much.

  4. "Ravin Pate"?

    - They cut out of the 49ers game late to go to Vikings locally, so I didn't get to see Thomas on the field.

Still curioius why Lenoir hasn't seen the field as he had a good pre-season..... glad Norman hasn't been getting any holding calls. But, I wish Mosely wouldn't play so soft on 3rd downs.
I assume it was Moore at RT? Seemed to play a clean game.

Vikings will be a good game... Hopefully, Greenlaw and Hurst will be back soon.

    1. Lenoir was at RCB with Thomas at LCB on the Jags TD drive. Thomas was targeted 3 times for 3 completions. Lenoir wasn't tested.

Ti be fair to Thomas he was covering Marvin Jones which was the tougher assignment.

All drafted rookies saw snaps on offense or defense today except Mitchell, due to injury.

      With JG's 0.256, that should get the 9ers a 2nd + a 4th or 5th Rd. draft pick, should the 9ers make the playoffs.

  8. It doesn't look like Omenihu had any snaps in the JAX game. I guess I was expecting that he would play at least a few snaps in the game, especially once the game was out of hand and the rookies were inserted.

RT remains an interesting position to track. On the TD pass to Aiyuk, Garoppolo got drilled by Dawuane Smoot, who blew past Jaylon Moore.

Was a tough release for 10, pressure didn’t please Shanahan. We didn’t see Moore rest of the game. The 49ers replaced him with Tom Compton

    1. 49Reasons believes me now how hard it is to switch sides, especially for a rookie learning on the left. He probably blew a gasket when Compton had to come in. Lmao!

      Delete
    2. Also shouldn't forget that Moore was carrying a bad knee into the game.

      Delete
    3. Yes, it's my understanding that Moore was pulled because of the knee, but Tome Compton wasn't a disaster for a change, although he was one of the lowest graded offensive players.

But honestly, the 49ers OL bullied an NFL defense for the 2nd week in a row, so no complaints from me.

    4. It's about fricken time, isn't it?

1 penalty for 12 yards, might have even been the most impressive aspect of this game for me, because I expected the 49ers to dominate the Jags, but I didn't expect such a disciplined effort, on the road, in an eastern TZ! That was about as clean of an NFL game as you will see from a team.

Let's see if they can sustain it, because if they can, they are a playoff team without doubt.

      Delete
    5. I was so impressed with the 49ers disciplined effort, I decided not to criticize Kyle's egregious decision to coach scared and go for the FG on the opening drive.

    6. Also, somebody needs to get Kyle some sunscreen for crying out loud. Did you guys see his sunburned face today, he looked like a drunken lobster, lol.

    2. I'd like to think the 9ers can get on a roll and finish that high but they have some tough games left on the schedule starting with this week against the Vikings. They always have a tough time in Seattle, and they still have the Bengals, Titans and Rams on the road. It's not impossible but at this point I'm just hoping they can get the 6th or 7th.

  11. Niners playoff chances are firmly in their hands. Cannot ask for more than that considering two weeks ago they were 3-5 and real close to early elimination.
