Trey Lance Era Begins

After 118 pass attempts, the Jimmy Garoppolo era in San Francisco may be over depending on the performance of their new prototype, Trey Lance. He'll get a game plan designed around his strengths and a week to get comfortable in it. The better he plays, the more likely Jimmy's calf is apt to suffer a "setback". It could end up being a sequel to the Alex Smith/Kaepernick saga that unfolded in 2012. He's not ready to be the pocket passer he'll need to be in the future, but if he can be the best version of himself this Sunday against the Cardinals and lead them to victory; he'll likely get another opportunity to stack an even better performance against the Colts in two weeks on Sunday Night Football.

  1. For some reason Shanahan seems to really want JG to play this season. Assuming Lance starts this week, I think he has to play very well in order to keep the starting job after the bye.

Will be interesting to see what sort of game plan Shanahan goes with.

    1. I was thinking the same thing, Scooter. Shanny's game plan will be just as interesting and pivotal to Lance's success. I think how the team responds will be another interesting tidbit in this big game.

      * SOME REASON = DRAFT TRADE VALUE. But after what we have seen the first 4 games of 2021, that "draft trade value" may not be much more than a day 3 draft pick!
Could that change if JG plays better after the break?
That is a POSSIBILITY, but not very likely. JG is what he is. Just curious, but do you agree? And if NOT, why not?

IMO, KS's game plan will be to open up the play book,
"IF" and it's a big if, Lance plays well the first 2 or 3 series. The better he plays, the more KS will let him show what he can do! But yes, like both you and Razor said, IT WULL BE INTERESTING....Here's
hoping the kid does well. IMO, this season could well be riding on it....

    3. Yeah, I was thinking draft trade value as well, but unless Jimmy is close to MVP, teams know that he will be let go if the decision is to go with Lance. They know the 49ers need the money for a Bosa and Samuel extension (but $25M and $19M respectively, ouch!!?).

So I'm beginning to think that draft value will not get them more than 5th or 6th at best if any team offers anything at all.

    4. You guys are exactly right ... teams already know what Jimmy's value is. The league has already seen enough of him to know his value, and trust me, teams will already have factored in his inability to stay on the football field.

I think Kyle's afraid to have his 4th losing season out 5. One thing I've figured out about Kyle, it's mostly about him, or at least it's about him first, and foremost.

And one more thing. I no longer trust a word that comes out of his mouth. I understand the strategic value of being coy, and I have no problem with gamesmanship. But in my opinion, Kyle takes it well beyond that. This BS about never really intending to give BOTH QB substantial snaps is a bold face lie.

    5. -For some reason Shanahan seems to really want JG to play this season.-

Yep and it has nothing to do with trade value. The reason is pretty obvious: he gives the team the best chance to win right now. Lost in the midst of all the noise from fans and media that Lance needs to play is the fact he's not the best option at QB right now. Shanahan has been pretty clear about what the plan is for Lance and that involves sitting behind Garoppolo if possible. If Lance has to play due to injury then the the plan has to change but he's going to play JG if he's available.

I'd just add some words to the sentence:
"Jimmy G gives the team the best chance to win right now while Lance gets some breathing room to develop into a starting NFL QB who can run Kyle's playbook".

I think Kyle has made this clear in various form at every chance he has had. Not sure what more he could say.

    * 2021 TRADE DEADLINE: Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. ET, just after Week 8.
If Lance does become the 9ers starting QB, JG may get a 4th
Rd., or possibly even a 3Rd. round draft pick if a team that's a playoff contender and is desperate for a QB because theirs is hurt? IMO that's the only way the 9ers will get more than a day three draft pick for him...There's also that
$26 Mil. salary and no trade clause.
But before we put the cart before the horse, lets see how well Lance does?

    1. I don't think any team is taking on JG's salary this year. Trade value will be about next offseason.

      Delete
    2. They aren't looking to trade JG GEEP. They have been clear on that. They want him to start this year while Lance develops. They also don't want to be down to 1 QB they think they can win with which they learned from last year.

      Delete
    3. Jimmy G 's role is to provide competent QB play while Lance develops. Doubt if ShanaLynch care whether they get a third round or a fourth round pick for him. He could even just be released.

Huge reason Shanahan went w/ Trey Lance after pre-draft research: Lance consistently distributed ball to the correct spot within the context of NDSU's offense.

We know KS wants an executor first. This has been Lance's first week with a game plan/first chance to show that in NFL

Well we're about to find out if Lance was worth the
draft capitol the 9ers gave up to get him.
While I don't expect Lance to beat Arizona, I'll be happy if he can & does consistently distributed ball to the correct spot within the context of KS's game plan.

    2. "Well we're about to find out if Lance was worth the draft capitol the 9ers gave up to get him."

You gotta be kidding me! It is nuts to believe that how Lance performs on Sunday has anything to do with what he will eventually become.

If he starts this Sunday, I expect him to make several rookie mistakes and show the flashes of talent and potential that he did last Sunday. He's just starting on a long, rocky road towards becoming the franchise QB for which he has the potential. To date, Lance has attempted less than 400 passes in college and NFL combined!

Most importantly, what Niners paid for him in draft capital has absolutely nothing to do with the speed of this process where the desired outcome is Lance become a League top-5 QB in Kyle's system.

      Delete
    3. Well said Mood Indigo. Lance is a long range play not an immediate solution. Some people don't seem to be able to grasp this concept. Shanahan didn't draft Lance to run around and make off schedule plays. He wants him to learn how to be a good pocket passer and play action QB at the NFL level with the ability to extend a play if it breaks down and to run read option as a changeup. He's not looking for RGIII part 2.

      Delete
    4. I watched the second half of last Sunday's game twice to carefully watch Lance. Everything I see in Lance now points to the realization of his high potential. The mistakes he makes are perfectly understandable. I'm confident that the coaching staff have goals and milestones set up for measuring and assessing his progress.

The jobs of an entire coaching staff and front office (and the careers of some of them) depend on Lance's development into a top-10 franchise QB in Kyle's system, if not top-5. Th stakes are high. Jimmy G and the success of this season in general are just means to this end.

  4. This week, I am hoping to see Trey settle down and just throw the ball normally. Though I do not expect him to clean up his motion or become more accurate this year, as that work is done in the offseason but I hope that by settling down his balls will become more catchable and wont sail as much.

I don't expect or ask that he makes full field reads, just be able to get through 2 reads normally, and occasionally get to his 3rd. Kyle and Mike hopefully will work to get him more defined looks and help him out with this.

    2. For those who did not see, or don't remember, this is
a Kurt Warner Game Tape Breakdown for Trey Lance that I posted prior to the draft. Part 1 is what Lance is good at and part 2, things Lance needs to improve on (in Warners opinion). And I agreed with Warner.
NOTE: The break down showed why I wanted the 9ers to draft Fields, not Lance.
The game against Arizona should show us if Lance has improved on the things he needed to work on, or NOT!

  9. I would think going deep early and often would accentuate Lance's strength's in the passing game. I would advocate for that to be married to the running game as a big part of the entire game plan.

    1. Yes, but everything hinges on the O line getting the run going right away. Can't have any TFLs for the RBs. If Sermon and Mitchell can keep moving the chains to avoid too many third and longs, Lance can distribute the ball to open receivers without feeling the pressure to thread the needle.

      Delete
    2. As long as Mitchell carries the ball we'll rarely lose any yardage. Dude's always falling forward. Reminds me of a speedier version of Frank Gore just how low he runs with power.

      Delete
    3. True, he has good balance. If he can now also develop Gore's vision, he'll be set.

    4. He's got the jedi master teaching him.

    5. I thought Mitchell was good week 1, but very underwhelming week 2. As Mood said, he needs to work on his vision.

  10. If some people can live with Jimmy's rookie mistakes they should do the same with Trey than, even that the difference is that his development will be rapidly accelerated./
How he moved in the pocket was very encouraging, and he had a good composure compared with some other rookie qb's.
    Whats not to like?!

  11. Shanahan did want to make one thing clear. Sunday does not represent a transition from Garoppolo to Lance for the starting quarterback job.

"Our starting quarterback is hurt," Shanahan explained. "If he would have been 100 percent today, we would have gone with him."

    2. Yeah, as I said before I think Lance has to be really impressive in order to keep the job.

NAE said earlier Shanahan wants to stick with JG because he gives the team the best chance to win. I think this is only partially the reason - I think it is more accurate to say Shanahan believes JG gives the team the best chance to win running the system Shanahan wants to run. I don't think Shanahan wants to be forced to run a system that is dumbed down so the rookie can run it, as I think he believes such a system won't be as successful as what he can run with a vet QB. So for Lance to keep the job I think he needs to demonstrate he can run Shanahan's system with minimal limitations. Which I don't expect him to show in his starting debut.

      Delete
    3. Could be true, Scooter but if Lance is impressive in his way of winning it should create some pressure on Shanny's decision.

I have a similar opinion. One recalls that Kyle was less than thrilled having to design a read option-based offense for RG3. Of course he wants to modify and expand his playbook to incorporate the designed QB run element that Lance brings -- but he wants the key features to be the same as those he ran with Jimmy G.

  12. I don't expect to see Trey become an overnight success. But, I do want to see an improvement from last Sunday with a week of practicing with the first team
Lance is still a raw talent, with much to learn. But, there's one thing he has right now and that is a strong arm. I would like to see Shanahan draw up a few plays for Sherfield on Sunday.

A combination of a strong arm with a speed WR could make things a little interesting. Sherfield would love the chance to show Arizona what he's capable of, and this could be a perfect scenario for him and Trey.
