Week 5 Matchups to Watch: 49ers at Cardinals

By Scooter_McG

The 49ers travel to Arizona in week 5 following two straight home defeats, facing the undefeated Cardinals. Division games are always important, and this one shapes up to be extra important for the 49ers as another loss would put them in an early hole for a playoff run, at 3 games back from the Cardinals and 2 back from the Rams. While I will stop short of calling this a must win game so early in the season, the 49ers don't want to find themselves losing any more ground on the division leaders heading into their bye week.

Making matters more interesting, Kyle Shanahan today confirmed that 3rd overall pick Trey Lance will make his starting debut at QB against the Cardinals in place of injured starter Jimmy Garoppolo. Going into a big game against an undefeated team with your backup QB would normally be a significant handicap, and that may well prove true in this game. But an optimist may point out that Jimmy G has been less than stellar through 3.5 games this year, while Lance offers an exciting (if somewhat raw) skill set and the Cardinals will have very little film to study on how the 49ers may utilise his skills, which may provide some form of advantage.

Here are the matchups I will be watching in this one.

Trey Lance/ Kyle Shanahan vs Cardinals defense/ Vance Joseph. This is an obvious one - everyone will be watching how Trey Lance fares. Vance Joseph is an experienced coach in the NFL and will no doubt be wanting to test the 49ers rookie QB by stressing his ability to read coverages and applying plenty of pressure. Kyle Shanahan on the other hand will likely be wanting to utilise the running game as much as possible (including Lance's ability to run) and give Lance as many easy throws as he can.

In the second half against the Seahawks Shanahan used the pistol formation extensively, providing Lance the opportunity to keep his eyes on the defense and make use of the read option. I expect we will see a lot of that again this week. In preseason when Lance was in the game the 49ers also used a lot of 3 WR sets, which can help open up running lanes. We also saw Shanahan often look to take some big shots early on when Lance came into games in preseason, and I wouldn't be surprised if we that again this week to try and take advantage of an aggressive Cardinals defense.

The Cardinals on the other hand have one of the worst rushing defenses in the NFL, ranking second last in terms of yards per carry, but have been very opportunistic against the pass. If Joseph and the Cardinals defense can force this one into a shoot out you have to imagine that will play right into the Cardinals hands. Lance and the 49ers have to get the run game going to avoid this.

49ers pass rush vs Kyler Murray. The 49ers pass rush was dynamite early on against the Seahawks, forcing multiple 3 and outs. They struggled a bit down the stretch as quick offensive turnovers and STs mistakes, as well as some key defensive penalties, failed to give the 49ers defense much rest. A common theme in the Seahawks scoring drives though was Russell Wilson using his legs to escape the pocket and pick up yards running, which has been an issue for the 49ers defense for years. Kyler Murray is an even more explosive runner than Wilson and it will be crucial for the 49ers defense to not only generate pressure on him, but to also not allow him to repeatedly beat them with his legs. This of course is much easier said than done, as almost all defenses struggle with Murray's elusiveness, but it is a key matchup in this one.

49ers secondary vs Cardinals receivers. Last week the 49ers banged up secondary did a pretty good job containing the Seahawks excellent receiving group. It doesn't get any easier this week though with DeAndre Hopkins, Christian Kirk, AJ Green and Rondale Moore providing Murray with a dynamic group well suited to Kingsbury's air raid offense that should stress the 49ers secondary. Marrying the coverage with the pass rush will be vital to slowing down the Cardinals number 1 ranked offense and giving the Trey Lance and the 49ers offense a chance to stay in and win the game.

  1. SCOOTER: Week 5 Matchups to Watch: 49ers VS the Cardinals.....
    * OLB Chandler Jones VS 49ers RT Mike McGlinchey with the Cardinals 3-4 defense.
    * Daniel Brunskill VS Arizona blitzing ILB. As we all know, Brunskill is the O-line's weak link and Arizona has hired Don Brown (Known as Dr. Blitz), as their new defensive coordinator.
    * JJ Watt VS the 9ers LT. If T. Williams is healthy he should control Watt. If not, both Jones and Watt could be a major problem for Lance.
I look for Arizona's DC to do any and everything he can, to confuse Lance. So I agree, the 9ers will need to establish a strong running game if Lance is to find success.
IMO, the best case scenario for 9er success: Arizona DC loads the box, to stop the run, and Lance shocks them with
his ability to get the ball to his receivers.

    1. Jones and Watt will definitely be ones to warch as well. Watt won't go against Williams much. He's playing more as a DT. I expect to see Watt and Jones line up next to each other a fair bit against the 49ers right side. Will be another key matchup.

You may be right, but I understand TW may not play this week (shoulder)? If so, Watt may go against TW's replacement, Jaylon Moore, or as you suggest, against D. Brunskil?

    3. Expect that duo to pull off some TE stunts against MacGlinch-Brunskill

    * Report: Russell Wilson out 6 weeks after surgery on ruptured finger tendon.
    * The Seahawks quarterback is expected to be out approximately six weeks after undergoing surgery on his finger, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The surgery was reportedly more complicated than expected, with Wilson needing screws to stabilize the finger.

  4. If Lance plays well enough to lead the team to victory over the Cardinals it should present Shanny with a more difficult decision. I hearken back to his own words, “And if someone ever looks like they give us a better chance to win, we’ll make that decision.”

While I doubt Lance will beat Arizona this week, I absolutely agree with you. I, as well as several season ticket holders I know, have discussed NOT spending several $$ thousand dollars for our 2022 season tickets to endure another losing season. Not when we can go to a local sports bar, or stay home and watch the 9er games for free.
I'll be happy if Lance can show that he's worth the draft picks the 9ers gave up for him and he's capable of becoming what we hoped we were getting when we drafted him. That would make the price for our 2022 season tickets worth it.

  5. The running back for Ohio St., Henderson looks good. Nice short area quickness and burst. Curious what his top end speed looks like.

    1. Texas' Longhorn RB, Bijan Robinson is looking good as well. His sudden change of direction is impressive.

  6. The only thing that I will be scrutinizing is KS play calling. I do believe he is in a slump, the trick play added to my thinking, maybe with the change of QB's will bring Shanny back to his play calling genius. I don't think QB nor CB are the main problem - KS play calling IMO is.

  7. UC,
Shanahan seems to out-think himself at times. Sometimes he gets to cute with his playcalling especially when the offense is already making steady progress.
If what he's calling is working, there's no need to try to pull a rabbit out of his hat.

    1. This doesn't surprise me at all. I know they are still calling it a calf injury, but I think they are fibbing a bit. The way he fell and twisted in that last game looked like knee or ankle ligaments were at least strained.

    2. I will also say, this may (emphasis on may) not be too big a loss for this game. As I noted in my article the 49ers actually used a lot of 3 WR sets in preseason when Lance was in the game. I think they will do so again in this one.

I Agree. I expect to see Trent Sherfield join Aiyuk and Samuel.

    4. They didn't bring up Benjamin to accentuate Lance's short passing game. Lmao!

    5. I too would like to see Benjamin targeted on go routes by Lance. But a more likely role for Benjamin is as a punt or kick-off returner.

TE Ross Dwelley is Next man up! He's not Kittle but he did get a TD last week.

  10. Kittle will be missed a lot in both run blocking and protecting Lance from Jones-Watt duo on the right on deep passes and third-and-long.

    1. Yeah, I think it will be his blocking he is missed more than his receiving. I mean, obviously he will be missed to some degree, but I think it would be a greater loss with JG in the lineup than Lance.

    2. I think he's still the most important third down safety blanket in the passing game when he's not forced to sat back to block. He's been at the receiving end of poor throws this season and has been playing hurt for the past two games. The 3 weeks in IR will help heal the leg irritation, which may be more than the calf (reading between the lines of what Lynch said on KNBR).

  11. If the 9ers are going to beat Arizona they'll need to establish a strong running game, but this should help Lance get the ball to his receivers....
    * The Cardinals cornerback depth will be tested
The Cardinals will be without their top cornerback Byron Murphy (ribs) on Sunday against the 49ers. Marco Wilson (ribs) is listed as a game-time decision and Antonio Hamilton is questionable with an ankle injury. That leaves Robert Alford and Tay Gowan as the only healthy cornerbacks on the Cardinals’ 53-man roster with the potential elevations of Luq Barcoo, Greg Mabin, or Jace Whittaker from the practice squad seemingly inevitable.
