Insider Signing

The #49ers are bringing back veteran LB Mychal Kendricks, who is in the building today and expected to sign after his physical, source said. SF had him in camp, but released him due to an injury. Should be healthy now.

  1. On August 28, 2021, the 9ers released LB Mychal Kendricks from injured reserve with a settlement.
The 9ers now intend to resign him to replace (I assume), LB Dre Greenlaw, or someone else? Question: Does Kendricks get to keep the settlement money he received when he was released on Aug 28th, or is it included in his new contract? Also, how does it affect the
    9er salary cap?

    1. Greenlaw is expected back in 2 weeks so they're gonna have a total of 4.

They just opened the window for Hasty. Both him and Kendricks make 53. I don't believe they ever put Williams on IR. I think he might be back too this week. Not sure about the financials or cap ramifications.

    2. GEEP, yes, Kendricks gets to keep then settlement money, which BTW, wasn't much. He signed a 1 year deal on August 15th, with $200,000 guaranteed, so it's likely that his injury settlement was below that, with the whole idea being that after his release (with settlement) he's free to resign with the 49ers, or another team.

Of course, they wouldn't have a need to resign Kendricks if they hadn't traded away Jones Griffith. Actually, I am not all that upset about trading away Griffith anymore, and yes Scooter, I probably did overreact to that trade a little bit.

As much as I wish they still had Griffith, he's actually on IR with a hamstring injury. But more importantly, I underestimated Al-Shaair's development. Holy cow is he good now. In fact, I think a case could be made that he's better than Greenlaw right now, that's how good Azeez has been playing at SAM in Greenlaw's absence. He's flying around the field making plays all over the place, and his tackling is as sound as it gets. In fact, he led the 49ers in tackles vs both GB and Seattle!

    3. Can I make a point about Mac Jones, though, especially since I've nicknamed Scooter "Mac", lol .... I kid with you Scooter, and no, I'm not going to bash Mac.

After the Patriots took the Cowboys to OT yesterday, and lost, suddenly I am hearing rumblings about "was Kyle Shanahan right about MAC JONES?". Talk about overreacting!

While I will acknowledge that he's playing pretty well for a rookie, I don't think anyone was questioning whether Mac Jones was the QB prospect who was most ready to contribute in the NFL. But at the same time, my argument was always about Mac Jones' ceiling as a pro QB.

He was certainly better against the Cowboys than he the previous week VS the Texans, but if we are being real about the way he finished yesterday's game, he probably should have been the main reason the Patriots lost that game, because the defense kept the team in the game, even though the Patriots didn't score a single point between the 4:50 mark in the 1st QTR, to the 6:23 mark in the 4th. That's about 43:00 minutes worth of scoreless football from Mac Jones, at home, in pretty good weather for Foxborough. And BTW, Mac Jones threw a bad pass that resulted in a pick 6 with a little under 2.5 minutes left in the game, and then turned around and on his very next throw, he threw a duck of a deep throw to Bourne on a Skinny Post, that should have been intercepted if the Cowboys' don't blow the coverage - with the Safety and CB don't miscommunicating with the ball in the air.

Rex Reid said of Mac Jones: "he reminds me — he’s closer to Danny Wuerffel than he is Tom Brady”, and I think that's a little harsh. Mac Jones is extremely good at making decisive reads and and anticipating coverage. He's playing the best football of any of the rookie QB RIGHT NOW, and that's nothing he should be ashamed of. The problem is, he's already very close to his ceiling, because he's advanced from a mental standpoint, but he's always going to lack athleticism and have a pee shooter for an arm (I agree with Rex on this point).

But yah, he's no Tom Brady, Rex is right about that. And really, he doesn't deserve to even be in that conversation as TB12. And as well as he's played so far, his Passer Rating is still under the 90.0 watermark, and his Total QBR is exactly average at 50.1, with 7 TD's and 6 INT's, which for me mean's he's as average as they come, which is what I predicted he would be, and you guys just wait until he tries to play in Foxborough, Massachusetts, once the winter weather moves in. It's not going to be pretty, I promise you that.

    4. BTW guys, I sure hope Al-Shaair isn't hurt, is he?

And oh gosh, no sign of Trey Lance today at practice coming off of the bye. Is Nate Sudfeld Garoppolo's primary backup this week?

      Yikes!

    5. I don't understand how anyone can watch the first 6 games of Mac Jones' career and think he's not looking good.

Yes, he makes some mistakes. All rookies do. But he's been good for the most part. And while I know it is PFF and should be taken with a grain of salt, they gave him a 92.2 grade for the Cowboys game.

He's going to be just fine.

    7. Scooter, I thought I did say Mac is looking good ... for a rookie. Very average for an NFL QB, but definitely good for a rookie QB.

BTW, the Patriots spent a fortune this offseason on offensive skill positions, and yet they rank 26th offensively (YPG), and are just 2-4 on the season. And the weather isn't even cold in Foxborough yet. However, lucky for them they are in the same division as the NY Jets and the trainwreck - Miami Dolphins, so they may very well end up with a .500 record. The thing is, the hardest way to build a roster is to make a habit of finishing around .500, which I would be willing to bet is going to be the norm for the Patriots moving forward.

I guess that's the way it goes after 2 decades worth of domination.

      Delete
    8. Lol, GEEP, yah, I admit that I do overreact on occasion. Scooter would say I do it more often than that, but I won't admit to that.

      Delete
    9. The thing about Mac Jones is, he doesn't make a lot of mistakes, yet, he has 7 TD's to 6 INT's, which goes to my point about a lack of arm talent.

Plus, he's been sacked an average of 2.2 times per game. Compare that to the 49ers QB's who have been sacked an average of 1.8 times per game, even though the 49ers OL has really struggled this season. So what does that tell us? It tells us Mac isn't very good at avoiding sacks either.

      Delete
    10. Patriots are ranked middle of the pack in passing yards. It's their running game that stinks.

This is definitely a case where statistics only tell part of the story. If you've watched him play you can see he is going to be good.

      Delete
    11. Scooter, you realize the Patriots are averaging fewer passing yards per game than the the 49ers?

      14) 49ers: 246.2 YPG
      19) Patriots: 235.7 YPG

And that's despite the fact that the Patriots only average 22.6 rushing attempts per game, while the 49ers average 28.8 rushing attempts per game.

I am not big on Passer Rating, but if Trey Lance "isn't ready to play", and his first start wasn't great, how do you explain this:

      QB Passer Rating -

      Mac Jones: 89.6
      Trey Lance: 88.4

Like I said, I respect what Mac Jones has done so far, but I'm hardly that impressed because I kind of figured he was the most ready to start, of all of the top QB prospect. Not only that, the Patriots are a good fit because of the style of offense that they run. It's a fairly conservative passing scheme. The bottom line for me is that Mac Jones is never going to light up the scoreboard, or stuff the stat sheet. He may pass for a high comp %, but that's really his only strength as a QB, and for my money, that's not good enough to be drafted in the top 5, let alone trading using 3 years worth of 1st round picks in order to draft. The Patriots were able to draft him at 15, so for them, it was a reasonable pick. If the 49ers had picked him after trading away all of that draft capitol, it would have been a massive mistake, not that he can't play, just that his ceiling isn't high enough to justify it.

My one issue with him ending up in Foxborough though, is the weather. We aren't there yet, but he's likely going to really struggle in the cold, windy winter months. Mark my words.

    12. I said it before and I'll say it again: Mac Jones is Jimmy Garoppolo 2.0

We don't yet know how durable Mac Jones is as a QB because he only started 17 games in college, and 6 games in the pros.

BTW, if his physical fitness is any indication of how durable he'll be as a pro, we all saw his beer belly coming out of college, so it's safe to say he hasn't exactly been a workout warrior or gym rat up until now.

    13. BTW Scooter, here are A.J. McCarron's stats through his first 7 NFL games (Cin):

      66.4 comp%, 7.2 AVG, 6 TD, 2 INT, 97.1 Passer Rating

and here are Mac Jones' through his first 6 NFL games (NE):

      71.1 comp%, 7.0 AVG, 7 TD, 6 INT, 89.6 Passer Rating

    14. Stats, stats and more stats. Have you watched him? He's looked pretty good.

      Delete
    15. Someone say stats? Lol! Mac Jones ranks 23rd in EPA/play and 25th in adjusted net yards per attempt and has led his team to a 2-4 record.

      Delete
    16. Good find, Razor.

Nobody is saying Mac Jones is a scrub, at least I'm not. My eyes tell me he throws with terrific anticipation, and he generally knows where to go with the football. That's nothing to sneeze at, especially for a rookie QB. But the physical limitations are always going to hold Mac Jones back. He doesn't move very well in the pocket, and he isn't a guy whose going to extend plays with his legs, which are both important attributes in the modern NFL. Plus, his arm talent is only just serviceable, so it's a good thing that he does throw with great anticipation because he's never going to be a guy who can muscle the football through tight windows, and in the cold dead air of Faxborough in December, or in any kind of driving rain, it's going to be a major issue.

Now, if you took Mac Jones anticipation, and married it to Trey Lances physical skill set, you'd really have something special. The hope is that Trey can develop that anticipation, or at least something close to it, which is why his ceiling is so much higher than Mac's, and admittedly it's a ceiling that Trey certainly hasn't reached yet.

Makes me think they still aren't happy with the play they've gotten from their depth LBs this year. Good signing imo.

    1. Ha! Thanks, Scooter.

Yea, he should have plenty left in the tank. It's a long season and although their paper thin in the secondary, if God forbid Warner or Al-Shaair were to go down; the linebacker position wouldn't be too far behind.

    2. GEEP, I think it helps that DeMeco Ryans was a LB, and is a really good coach. I think he was a really good LB coach, and he's getting really good at being a DC. Don't you think?

    3. 49Reasons
It's still early in both the season and DeMeco's DC
career, but so far he's been up to the task. He was
a good LB as a player, so he knows the position and how to develop his players.
Ask me what I think of him as a DC, when we have a full season to judge him by. But so far, he looks like a winner.

    4. It's funny, after the first three weeks there was a fair amount of people (largely on other blogs) either outright criticising Ryans or outlining considerable concern with how the D was performing. But two straight excellent outings quite rightly has turned that around. Need to keep up the performances of the past two weeks moving forward.

      Delete
    5. Yah, the 2nd half of the Lions game was a little alarming, but it was the first game of the season, and the Verrett injury did temporarily stun the entire team, so that performance was kind of excusable, IMO.

I think the GB game was the shock to the senses. The Niners' DB's gave up some big early completions, and then they committed multiple back-breaking PI penalties. But it was the shockingly bad coverage on that final sequence that cost them at the end of the game that really upset a lot of fans, including myself.

But the defense locked down the Seahawks for the most part, and then I think they were the only team to really frustrate the Cardinals offense, rushing and passing, pretty much all afternoon.

The 49ers defense is currently ranked 6th in total yards allowed, and 7th vs the pass, which is pretty remarkable considering their issues at CB. But yah, we are only 5 games in, so the jury is still out.

Now, can I talk about the offense .... lol, just kidding.

      Delete
    6. I do want to talk about the offense because I've really CONDENSED my thoughts on why I am so frustrated with the Trey Lance offense, and I think I can sum it up in ONE medium length paragraph, which I am sure you guys would appreciate, but I'll get into that later.

      Delete
    7. OK guys, I know that some of you, maybe even most of you, are tired of hearing my rants, so I figured I ought to sum it all up in ONE simple post.

So here it is ... The HOLY GRAIL of all of my recent arguments, all rolled up into a YouTube video, and a couple paragraphs of my own:

The Rise and Fall of RG3: Film Breakdown of What REALLY Happened

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTL6UGj5tek

I don't know if you guys have watched this YouTube video, but if you haven't, YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO!

The first 7 minutes of Alex Rollins' video give a great, condensed breakdown of exactly how Kyle used RG3 during his OROY rookie season, and why it was so darn effective.

Now, this next paragraph pretty is my own, and it perfectly sums up my frustrations with the way Kyle has used Trey Lance so far this season.

In 2012, Washington drafted the Heisman Trophy winning duel-threat QB - Robert Griffin III, and after committing to RG3 as the team's starter after the draft, Kyle immediately went to work to build a REAL offensive system around the rookie duel-threat QB. Kyle took the STAPLE Shanahan system, and married zone-read concepts into that system. And what Kyle ultimately created was really the most simplified version of the Shanahan offensive system that we’ve seen to date, because he was able to use this marriage of concepts to create a multi-faceted rushing attack, which in turn caused extreme stress on opposing defenses, and that allowed Kyle give RG3 very well-defined (simplified) reads off of the dynamic rushing attack.

I think for a lot of people, including myself, the success that Kyle had with RG3 back in 2012, went along way in influencing the way I felt about Kyle Shanahan as an offensive play designer/play caller.

The answer to this has been pointed out to you before but you either don't read responses you don't like or have a memory disorder.

Mike/Kyle Shanahan didn't want RG3. Take a moment and let that sink in because unless you accept this point you can't move forward. Now yes they did come up with an offense to suit RG3 but it wasn't their preferred offense to run. The purpose of drafting Lance wasn't to recreate the RG3 offense. It was to develop a young player who had great physical and mental skills into a more mobile version of the pocket passers Kyle prefers. All you have to do is look at every other QB the Shanahans have had besides RG3 to see what Kyle wants. He wants a more mobile Kirk Cousins/Garoppolo/ Schaub etc. The core of his offense is going to be the run/play action game no matter who his QB is. He will use Lance's running ability at times but ultimately he wants Lance to become Elway near the end of his career, not RG3. Run enough to gain some first downs but make the majority of your plays from the pocket.

Your rants are based on wanting to see something that isn't going to happen. Get over it already.

  5. At the risk of writing an epitaph on the 9ers 2020 seasons
tombstone! The 9ers are a 2W-3L team and IMO, the next two 9er games are critical for a winning season.
If the 9ers lose to either the Colts or Bears, with their next two games against Arizona (6W-0L) and the Rams (5W-1L), They could be 3W-6L or 2W-7L if they lose all four games.
If they beat both the Colts and Bears, they'll be 5w-3L.

Colts: The 9er should beat the Colts.
On paper, the Colts have one of the best offensive lines in the league, but the Colts O-Line needs to get healthy.
LG Quenton Nelson is still recovering from an offseason injury, right tackle Smith missed Week 2, and new starting LT Eric Fisher is still not 100% following last year’s season-ending Achilles rupture.
The Colts QB Carson Wentz, like the 9ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo, has a problem with injuries. Now, it's his ankle injury. Wentz staying healthy is obviously essential for the Colts to have a successful season.
The outcome of the game will likely depend on which QB has the better game and which team is guilty of committing the most mistakes.

    The 9er at the Bears:
I see this game as a game either team could win, but home field advantage goes to the Bears. The outcome will rest on the 9er D shutting down the Bears offense, and which D has the most sacks. Chicago's OLB's Khalil Mack and Robert Quinn VS the 9ers DE Nick Bosa, Dee ford and Arik Armstead.

For the 9ers to beat either Arizona, or the Rams, JG would have to get off to a fast start and play his best game of the 2021 season. And the D would have to continue giving the
offense a chance to win and finally get 1-2 turnovers.
Could the 9ers win? Yes, as much as I'd like to see it, I don't see JG playing much better than he has so far this season.

    ReplyDelete
  6. What could change, to give the 9ers a chance to beat both
    Arizona and the Rams.
IMO, re-establishing a dominant running game should alleviate two 9er problems.
    1) Take the pressure off JG to carry the offense.
    2) Allow both RG Daniel Brunskill and RT Mike McGlinchey to run block and keep JG healthy VS being pressured, or sacked.
Staying healthy and getting players back from IR will also help.
