The 49ers have started the season 1-0 for the second time in the Kyle Shanahan era, this time beating the Lions 41-33. Starting the season with the W is nice, and there were some positives to take away, but also some negatives that really take the gloss off this one.
The game ended up a lot closer than it should have after the 49ers led the game 38-10 and 41-17. The Lions came back and had the ball at the 49ers 25 with a full set of downs and a chance to tie it late in the game, but the defense did enough to close it out with a some good plays from Dontae Johnson, Azeez Al-Shaair and Samson Ebukam.
Here's what stood out to me.
Jimmy Garoppolo was sharp. Jimmy G finished the game 17/25 for 314 yards and a TD, and looked sharp throughout the game. He didn't make any of his usual boneheaded decisions and the only ball that was at risk of being intercepted was a deflection. His 79 yard TD to Deebo Samuel may not have been the prettiest pass you'll ever see, but he did a great job of standing tall in the face of the rush and recognising his WR was one-on-one with a defender that his back turned, allowing him to just put the ball in the vicinity and let Deebo make a play on the ball. Jimmy also did a great job avoiding pressure on a few occasions and making positive plays out of dangerous situations. Jimmy gets a game ball for this one, and was a key reason for the 49ers victory.
Deebo was targeted often and delivered, but then there was the fumble. Deebo had a monster game as he bullied whichever defender covered him throughout the game. He finished with 9 catches for 189 yards and the TD from Jimmy G. Deebo was particularly effective on the deep cross. However, he had the opportunity to put the game to bed with his third down reception late in the game, picking up first down yardage, but then allowed the defender to punch the ball out and set up a grandstand finish for the Lions. He had a great game, but he needs to have greater awareness at the end of the game.
Elijah Mitchell looked good, but running game stalled in second half. Elijah Mitchell got plenty of action in this one (in part due to injury - more on that later) and he showed some nice elusiveness and toughness to pick up yards after contact on his debut. He finished with 104 yards on 19 carries including a 38 yard scamper for a TD. The running game looked good in the first half, however, in the second stanza the Lions largely stifled the run game and prevented the 49ers from getting the edge.
Offensive line was solid. The offensive line paved the way for a 31-10 lead at half time, providing nice holes for the running game and keeping pressure off the QBs. They remained solid in the second half, with the team only allowing one sack (on a corner blitz where the CB was not picked up by the RB), but the running game was bottled up as the offensive line was unable to create much space for the backs. Overall, it was a promising start for the offensive line, though it would have been nice to see the team continue to bully a Lions defensive line that is decent but nothing great.
Trey Lance got his first taste of the NFL, with some ups and downs. Lance has the distinction of having thrown the 49ers first TD of the 2021 season, with a nice 5 yard toss to Trent Sherfield. He also had three runs on the day, but the Lions were all over each of the run attempts and shut them down very quickly. It was nice to see Lance get some game action, but the Lance run packages seemed like the least dangerous runs of the 49ers. If the 49ers hadn't allowed the Lions to mount their comeback I'm sure he would have seen some more action late in this one.
Where was Aiyuk? As good as Deebo was, the lack of opportunities for Aiyuk was equally noteworthy. Aiyuk struggled during preseason and it appears the strong play of Sherfield has convinced the team to let he and Aiyuk split snaps. Sherfield saw the field early and often throughout the game in place of Aiyuk. And Aiyuk was held without a target. It is a startling fall down the pecking order for Aiyuk, who many believed was poised for a huge season and would be the 49ers #1 WR this year. After the game Shanahan indicated the recent hamstrong issues were a factor in the limited opportunities, but hopefully this isn't another Dante Pettis situation unfolding.
Aaron Banks and Trey Sermon didn't suit up. While Banks sitting out was not unexpected, Sermon being a healthy scratch was a real shocker. That is the 49ers 2nd and 3rd round picks not suiting up for this one. Not a great look for the draft process.
Interior of the defensive line got pushed around. The 49ers were without Javon Kinlaw in the middle, but throughout camp and preseason the talk had been that the defensive line, in particular the interior of the defensive line, was the strongest and deepest unit on the team. It didn't look that way in this one though. The DTs were routinely pushed out of the play or allowed to run themselves out of the play, opening some huge holes for the Lions running backs through the middle. The Lions running game allowed them to keep it close for most of the first half, and keep the 49ers from teeing off on Goff in the second half as the Lions mounted a comeback. Significant improvement is needed moving forward as the schedule gets tougher.
Pass rush was good in the first half, but got gassed. The 49ers did a nice job of pressuring Goff early in the game, and pretty much throughout the first half. However, the 49ers also struggled at times in the second half mounting much of a pass rush, giving Goff plenty of time late in the game to find his receivers and keep the comeback on track. Again, the talk of the offseason was the quality and depth of this unit, but when Bosa and Ford were off the field the team did not seem to give a depleted Lions offensive line much trouble.
Dee Ford was excellent. While the defensive line was a little disappointing overall, one guy that really stood out was Dee Ford. He caused the INT, and also had a sack, as well as creating pressure on a couple of other plays. Nick Bosa also showed flashes on his return, with a couple of bull rushes that really rocked Sewell and led to one sack. Street also had some nice plays including his first ever sack.
Deommodore Lenoir held his own. With Moseley out, Demo got the start at LCB. Bar a pass intereference penalty he played strong throughout the game with some tight coverage and as a result was rarely tested. It was a promising start to his career for the rookie, which is a good thing as he may be needed to play a significant role this year (more on this later).
Injuries reared their ugly head. Hard not to feel sorry for Jason Verrett. He finally was able to put together a healthy season in 2020 and had an excellent season. But he went down in the fourth quarter with what looked like a serious knee injury. Verrett was very emotional coming from the field, no doubt fearing the worst. We'll need to wait for tests to come back but at this stage it doesn't look good. Losing Verrett for an extended period of time would be a huge loss for the 49ers at a position with limited depth (and based on tweets I am hearing the team believes it is an ACL and season ender). A lot of pressure now goes on newly signed Josh Norman and the rookie Lenoir.
Mostert also went out early with a knee injury, though it didn't look to be as serious. While a number of other players spent some time on the sidelines with knicks. After managing to avoid major injuries for the most part through camp, it appears the 49ers injury luck has resurfaced.
The team struggled to close this one out. The 49ers have historically been sluggish week 1 under Kyle Shanahan, in particular on offense. That wasn't the case in this one - a botched snap to start aside, the 49ers offense was nigh unstoppable in the first half. And while the defense had some struggles against the run, they did a good job of not breaking most of the first half and came up with a big pick-6 to blow the game open late in the half. However, the second half was a completely different story. A few miscues on offense that stalled some drives, as well as some penalties on defense and ongoing struggles stopping the run, allowed the Lions to stop bleeding points and stay in the game. Then in the fourth quarter the team allowed the Lions to wrest momentum away and get on a roll, with Goff steadily picking up yards and gaining confidence while the run game continued to provide a nice foil. Even so, the Lions comeback should have been nothing more than some late consolation points, but Kittle failed to handle a difficult onside kick, and then Deebo fumbled after picking up what would have been the match sealing first down.
It's only week 1 and some sloppiness can be expected, but these miscues and struggles in finishing off an opponent and closing out games is not a new thing for the 49ers or Shanahan. They need to be better in this regard.
Final Verict
At half time the 49ers looked like they were on their way to an easy victory, but they simply let their foot off the gas and allowed a team that had no business hanging with them back in the game. They need to be better. The injury to Verrett, among other injuries, puts a real dampener on the win and puts some real question marks around the team's depth moving forward.
Let's face it. Kyle Shanahan simply struggles to finish games. Not because he isn't one of the best okay callers, because he is. He just makes dumb decisions at important points of game, especially when his team has the lead.
ReplyDeleteI think he deserves some serious criticism after this game, but they did get the win, so hopefully they can build on that and learn from today.
"play callers"
DeleteHis play calling deserves to be questioned. But so does the mentality of the team in those situations (which is also at least partly on the coach).
DeleteOne thing I thought for sure is that Kyle should have brought Trey Lance in after they kicked a FG to go up 41-17 with less than 20 minutes left in the 4th QTR. Perfect chance to use Trey to expand the rushing attack to close out the game, while also getting Trey reps. Missed opportunity cost them dearly! Kyle seems to have no real clue exactly how he wants to handle using Trey Lance, and it's really starting to bother me! His use of Lance today made no logical sense, IMO, and it's driving me crazy!
DeleteAlso, it's way too risky not to put more resources into backing up Verrett, with his injury history.
I know they signed Norman, but they better call Sherman now! Hope he's on speed dial, SMH!
Sorry, I meant to type "less than 10 minutes left in the 4th QTR."
Delete49Reasons
DeleteJust curious my friend, but I don't think the 9er FO
is interested in interested in uncle Sherm.
WHY? Likely because he would be a distraction that the
talking heads would find his arrest impossible to ignore, not to mention his physical and mental state may leave something to be desired?
I also think Kyle deserves criticism for the way he used Lance. He brought the rookie in on 3rd and 20, one of the dumbest things I've ever seen, absolutely running counter to proper development.
ReplyDeleteHe brought Lance in on that play to run a specific run play. Everyone knew they would run, the plan was to try and make it an explosive run. Had nothing to do with development.
DeleteHow does it make sense to bring Lance in to run plays that the defense know are coming? How does that help a rookies confidence and/or development? It's ridiculous, and he's going to get him hurt primarily using him like that.
DeleteIt makes sense because it means the defense has an extra player they have to account for as a potential runner. It wasn't a designed Lance run. It was a designed option. Defense took away the option, but OL blocked poorly in the middle which was why the play got blown up.
DeleteIf Jimmy G is in the game the options are more limited.
The RPO TD pass was fine, but these obvious zone/reads when the defense is stacking the box because they know it's almost certainly a run, is not helping anyone. Not the team. And not Lance's development!
ReplyDeleteWhat makes Lance dangerous is when you don't know if it's a run or pass. He's not nearly as effective when he's used only on run plays when the defense is almost certain it's a run play!
ReplyDeleteIt only hurts Trey's confidence, and puts him at harms way. Jimmy can run that stuff, so it's less of a "tell", and it's usually more effective when it less of a "tell".
Trey needs an opportunity to stack up some reps, that's how you develop. Not this obvious nonsense!
Dude, it was one play. They were trying to get an explosive run play.
DeleteAll other plays he was out there for were downs it could be either run or pass.
You seriously massively overeact to everything.
Like I said, you're much better off bring Lance in up 41-17, and letting him run the full arsenal of plays, so he can actually get a rythim and gain some confidence. This is just gimmicky nonsense, the way Kyle is using him right now!
ReplyDeleteGIMMICKY NONSENSE!
I thought Jimmy played very well. But there was a golden opportunity to bring Trey in the EXPAND the running game to close out the game going away. Kyle blew it, IMO, and it ends up being a missed opportunity!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Talk about talking out of each side of your face!
DeleteAre you really defending Kyle in this situation, Scooter?
DeleteAre you really OK with bringing a prized rookie QB in on 3rd and 20, just for him to run the football into the teeth of the defense, in order to set up a long FG attempt which they ultimately missed anyways?
Do you really think that's an acceptable way to use a rookie QB whom you mortgaged the future in order to draft? Putting him in harms way in order to kick a FG from 2 yards closer?
I ... I just don't think there is anything Kyle can do, that you are willing to criticize.
If Trey Lance gets hurt running one of these pointless zone/read runs into the teeth of the defense, I hope you carry your unconditional support in shame.
And, BTW, I have a feeling that the 49ers will regret trading away LB Jonas Griffith. Yet another head scratching decision with potentially huge ramifications! I have no idea why you would trade away a 6'4" ILB with his instincts, and who moves like him? He was not only one of your best special team players, but he also has pro bowl potential as an NFL starter, with a little more development, IMO. Those kinds of ILB's don't grow on trees! When you find a hidden gem like that, you don't trade him away in order to hold onto a guy like Marcel Harris, just because you drafted Harris. Certainly not for a future 6th round pick? That's how you end up with holes on your roster.
DeleteWho is ultimately making these decisions? Is John Lynch cowering to Kyle Shanahan? It kind of feels like that.
For the first time since ShanaLynch took over this team, I am becoming very concerned about their personnel decision making. Very concerned! I am not hitting the panic button yet, but I see cracks in the foundation already, and I hate to say it but I see potential for yet another season to go south in a hurry.
I sure hope it doesn't happen, but I'll be keeping an eye on Griffith's contributions in Denver, especially with Dre Greenlaw's groin injury!
Yes, I am salty right now. Mostly because Sermon, and Banks were healthy scratches, Ambrey Thomas looks way out of his depth, Brandon AIYUK had ZERO targets, and Kyle left an injury prone Verrett in with the team leading 41-17 with 10 minutes left in the 4th QTR. No Javon Kinlaw, leaving the Niners interior DL exposed to the run. The Niners drafted him despite knee tendonitis, when they could have drafted a blue chip CB.
And now Kyle is doing his best to screw up his prized rookie QB's development.
Oh Joy! Honestly, as great as Kyle is as an OC, I almost feel like ShanaLynch need an intervention at this point, in order to save themselves from themselves.
ShamaLynch traded away a 6'4" 250 lbs ILB who is instinctive, and moves like a hybrid LB/S, in order to hold onto Marcell Harris, a 215 lbs ILB who couldn't cut it as a Safety, and doesn't even move as well as the 6'4" 250 lbs Griffith!
DeleteThey failed to pull their most injury prone and valuable defensive back, in what should have been a blowout win, and now we read reports about ShanaLynch trading away a fortune in draft picks in a failed attempt to block the Patriots from drafting a certain QB?
Who is actually making these poor decisions, and why are the 49ers making so many of them? Is there an internal power struggle! I think there might be. In my humble opinion, if we can't stage an intervention, then somebody needs to be fired at this point, because something seems a miss.
You criticize having him run a play on 3rd and 20 because it was almost certainly a run play (though a QB option, not a designed QB run), then say they should have played Lance at the end when thd team should be running because he adds an extra running threat.
DeleteOn the bright side, there were a lot of positives. For instance:
ReplyDeleteElijah Mitchell is a revelation in Kyle's system! He has the PERFECT skill set for this system. He's strong, fast, and has an absolutely explosive first cut. Plus he's a great receiver out of the backfield, which we really didn't see today. I am still extremely high on Trey Sermon, but thank goodness for Mitchell, with Mostert's injury issues.
A few more positives:
ReplyDelete- Deebo Samuel. My goodness, he is absolutely dynamic in the middle of the field. He really is a hybrid WR/RB in the truest sense of the word.
- Nick Bosa. Still one of the most RELENTLESS defensive lineman I have ever seen, even in his first game back from a torn ACL. Wow, does this guy play hard!
- The entire OL. They had a great game as a collective unit!
- Jimmy Garoppolo. He was dialed in with his down-field passing. He shoes great touch to all levels, and moved pretty well within the pocket. And he still stands tall in the pocket, even with defenders in his face. Very encouraging performance from Jimmy today!

Replying to @LombardiHimself
"Does the Aiyuk thing make any sense to you? He was great last year and now he can’t get one target cause he had a few bad training camp practices? Odd way to treat your first round WR who’s proven he can play."
Revealing comment from Trent Williams. Was Aiyuk' goose eggs receptions today a result from dropped passes as TW suggested or the result of Shanahan being cautious because Aiyuk having some lingering issues with his hamstring injury?
I'm any case, Shanahan will need to put this potential issue to rest immediately.
If Shanahan choosing not to pass to Aiyuk was some kind of punishment for dropped passes, it can cause some locker room tension going forward.
I don't believe those comments are from TW. They are from a fan account.
DeleteSorry, Trent Williams said "a few bad training camp practices" not dropped passes.
ReplyDeleteSo a few things that were troubling.
ReplyDelete1. Their use of Trey Lance was a bit odd, it looked to much like Taysom Hill. I would much prefer to just give him series. That said it's week one, so I don't want to over analyze it.
2. It took exactly 1 week for the Injury that everyone feared might occur to do so. This is especially troubling given their refusal to try and address the issue and w/ everyone knowing their secondary is littered with injury prone players. We all know SF wants to build front to back, but you still need starting level players back there or they will be rendered useless by the quick hitters the secondary gives up.
Without Mosely this team will struggle mightily vs Philly and GB.
Exactly my point Shoup. The way they used Trey yesterday was gimmicky nonsense. His ability to run the read/option is only a real valuable asset if the defense believes he's a threat to pass the ball. I didn't have a problem with the RPO at the 5 yard line, but all of the zone/read keepers against a stacked box, were not only pointless, but are also needlessly putting Trey in harms way.
DeleteThis is Kyle trying not to look like an idiot for trading away 2 extra first round picks, and a third rounder, for a QB they don't even need this season.
I am not against allowing Trey to develop for a year behind Jimmy, even though I don't believe you trade away all of those assets to do it. I am against the way they are using Trey, as an expensive (draft capitol) Taysom Hill. You don't need a first round pick to do that stuff. Heck, was Taysom Hill even drafted?
Put the kid for a full series or 2 either after you put a team away, or to simply hand the ball off. Don't bring the rookie QB in on 3rd and 20, and have him run up the guy, for crying out loud. Absolutely ridiculous!
Shoup,
ReplyDeleteYou make good points.
The Taysom Hill parallel is definitely something I don't want to see for Trey. The one pass Lance threw was for a touchdown and I believe that Shanahan will open up the passing game a little more as the season progresses. Lance will get his opportunities as Shanahan has intoned. But for now, Jimmy G had a very good first game and this will allow Shanahan not to rush Trey into action.
I would hope that Moseley is ready to go against the Eagles. But if he can't go I would like see more of Demo Lenoir. I believe that Lenoir is head and shoulders ahead of Thomas at this point and it showed in Sunday's game. Perhaps Norman gets some snaps against the Eagles and it's been reported that Sherman could be brought in for some backup support. Sherman is very familiar with the defensive schemes and would be a positive presence on the team.
Thanks AES,
DeleteI agree with you and definitely want to see that become the case. The threat of lance running should lead to bigger gaps in coverage. I would like to see more rollouts sprinkled in with the RPO's to keep things simple for Trey in the early part of the season.
As for Demo, he played really well but we have to take that with a grain of salt. The Lions have the worst receiving corps in the NFL and its not particularly close. The Eagles meanwhile should give us a better idea of just where our secondary really stands in the NFL, and if they are good enough to hold up long enough for the front 4 to get home.
A few things that were bright.
ReplyDelete1. Jimmy looks really mobile out there. He saved several plays scrambling around back there.
2. Bosa and Ford, they are both getting back into it but looked very good on their first outing post injury. This bodes very well for the future.
3. Lenore looked really good today, in regards to point 2 in the troubling category, he will need to step up going forward but he looked good out there today in first pro action.
If you're a 9er fan who's disappointed with the wheels coming off in the 4th Qtr of the Lions game....Take some solace that you're not a GB Packer fan.
ReplyDeleteNothing went right for the Packers in getting blown out by the Saints, 38-3, in the 2021 season opener in Jacksonville, Fla., on Sunday.
Green Bay fell behind 17-0 early on, got a field goal before halftime, but then blew its one chance to get back in the game with an Aaron Rodgers red-zone interception on the first drive of the second half.
ANYONE SEE THIS ONE COMING? 9er CB Jason Verrett fears another torn ACL!
ReplyDelete* When Jason Verrett went down with a knee injury in the third quarter it opened the door to the 49ers' nightmare scenario. Their shaky cornerback depth, already stretched by Moseley's absence, needed to be relied upon late. Dontae Johnson and Ambry Thomas both struggled to come up with stops while the Lions posted 16 points in less than a minute in the fourth quarter. This will be the single greatest issue facing the 49ers moving forward.
QUESTION: Does anyone think Sherman is the answer, or is it time for the 9er FO to consider trading for a starting CB?
Question, does Dontae not understand that pushing a WR OB is going to stop the clock??
DeleteScooter
ReplyDeleteAn excellent synopsis of the game Scooter, maybe one of your best. You highlighted the good and bad from the game and in the comment section, shut down the sky is falling hysterics from one of our own (at least he claims to be).
I was also impressed how quickly Scooter got the report out right after the game!
DeleteDitto, Scooter. Thanks very much for an excellent, well-organized, comprehensive review.
DeleteGlad you all liked it. I won't be able to get these out so quickly every week, only when I have the Monday off to watch the games live. But I will have a breakdown after every game once I have a chance to watch them.
DeleteDo we have any idea what kind of shape Sherman is in? Seems like mental health was probably a priority vis-a-vis staying in football shape.
ReplyDeletecubus
DeleteGood question! I don't know that anyone knows what kind of shape (mentally or physically), he's in.... And why I ask the question, "is he the answer?"
THE ANSWER TO THE ABOVE QUESTION IS.....
DeleteVerrett, who tore his left ACL in 2016 and suffered an Achilles tear in 2018.
San Francisco is finalizing a deal for veteran free-agent cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick in the aftermath of Verrett's injury, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

ReplyDeleteAfter yesterday's game, and then the report about ShanaLynch using all of those 1stbround draft picks in order to move up in the draft and block the Patriots from drafting a QB who they wound up drafting exactly where they wanted him anyways, I am finally down on the ShanaLynch regime. What a shame. I really thought they were going to win at least one more world championship, and now I have serious doubts!
ReplyDeleteThe 49ers won their season opener yesterday, but it feels like a kick in the guy! What a shame!
Kick in the gut!
ReplyDeleteAND THE SKY IS FALLING......
DeleteI never said the sky is falling. I said kick in the gut. They ultimately did end up winning a road game to start the season, and that's rarely an easy task, regardless of opponent.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do see cracks in the foundation, and I do question some of Kyle's decision making. I am not sure how anyone can see so many high draft picks either not contributing at all, or barely contributing, and not see those cracks in the foundation.
They still have almost the entire season out in front of them, so they can easily right this ship. The problem for me is .... I am losing confidence in Kyle's ability to keep the ship upright.
1 winning season out of 4, and now cracks in the foundation are already showing after week one?
Yes, I am a lot more concerned than I thought I'd be at this stage.
And I can assure everyone that Trey Lance is going to get hurt being used like this. Wouldn't it be a shame to get him hurt for no good reason?
DeleteI am just calling it like I see it GEEP.
ReplyDeleteI am not afraid to say that I think it appears that Kyle Shanahan is a much better play caller/play designer than he is a Head Coach.
Everyone knows he's one of the best offensive minds in the NFL, but that doesn't someone a great HC now does it? The fact of the matter is, you are only as good as your record says you are, and Kyle is now in his 5th season as a HC with ONE winning season to show for it.
The way he's mishandling his prized draft pick, and the unusually large number of high draft picks either not contributing, or barely contributing, tells me that if Kyle isn't on the hot seat as a HC, he should be.
If I had to guess, I'd say he and John aren't working that well together, despite the facade. Look no further than the report about the reason they traded a fortune to move up in this year's draft. Or look at the fact that they traded up to draft a RB in the 3rd round despite all of their success at finding RB much later in the draft, if not undrafted all together. And that RB they traded up for (Sermon), despite other glaring needs, hasn't even been able to beat out Hasty, who went undrafted in 2020. Or how about drafting an OG in the 2nd round who doesn't even fit their scheme, and may not even play this season? How about waiving a CB (DJ REED) only to see your biggest division foe pick him up off waivers, and turn him into their best CB and kick returner? How's that for mismanagement?
These things tell me there is actyally a lot of disagreement, and friction, between Kyle and John. If I had to guess, I say that Kyle is probably not playing well with others within the personnel department and FO. Kyle's a brilliant offense play caller, but he's stubborn to a fault. Some guys aren't meant to be in charge of an NFL football team. That's just a fact!
The clock is ticking now! Soon we'll see which way this thing is really heading.
For the record, I sure hope I am proven wrong on this!
DeleteAnd, BTW, I know for a fact that John Lynch was very upset at Kyle for going on a public podcast, and openly speaking about how the Rams front office outmaneuvered the 49ers front office, in the Mathew Stafford transaction. John was very upset, as well he should be, according to multiple sources.
ReplyDeleteNot good!
And now a report leaks out about the 49ers failed attempt to block the Patriots from drafting Mac Jones?
DeleteNot good!
Mostert out 8 weeks and going on IR. Verrett lost for the season :(
ReplyDeleteConsidering how the NFC West looked, best case scenario now is Playoffs. Lets see how this team reacts to adversity.
And one more thing. I see the way Kyle has handled the QB "battle" as failed leadership on Kyle's part. I don't give a flying F whether the locker room is behind Garoppolo or not. It's not their call! It's about who the HC believes gives his team the best chance to win. That's all there is to it. It's not up to George Kittle, or Trent Williams, to decide who the locker room should get behind. And if this was going to potentially split the locker room, they should have traded Jimmy away before the start of training camp, or released him if they had to. They are potentially playing with fire, I'll tell you that.
ReplyDelete49Reasons
ReplyDelete"I am just calling it like I see it GEEP." Yep, I get it, so how is Mac Jones doing so far?
But GEEP, how 49reasons sees it is FACT, while anyone who sees it differently is an APOLOGIST.
DeleteScooter
DeleteYea, you're right! He's never been wrong yet.
What's your point guys?
DeleteYhe 49ers look like bumbling idiots after Adam Schefter's report. All they had to do was make it clear that Trey was their guy, instead of making it look like the bungled the entire process. I happen to think Kyle wanted Mac, but John and the rest of the scouting department thought it would be a huge mistake to trade all of those draft assets to move up for a guy they could easily have drafted where they were slotted, at #12.
ShanaLynch are quickly losing their collective reputations around the league, in part, due to their misjudgment of the quarterback draft market. I am no Mac Jones fan, but I think a strong case can be made that the 49ers either should have stood pat at #12 and taken Jones, or gone an entirely different direction all together. Spending all of those draft assets to draft a QB who isn't even playing, while you have holes at other spots on your roster despite trying to make a run at the Super Bowl, doesn't look real smart, especially when you have 2nd and 3rd round picks who aren't even suiting up despite Super Bowl asperations.
To make matters worse, Kyle doesn't appear to have any clue how to use Trey Lance, and he may end up either getting him injured, ruining his confidence, or both. Trey looks hesitant to run, yet Kyle is calling plays to have him run right at the teeth of the defense?
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
I think it's becoming obvious that there is serious friction brewing between Kyle and the scouting department (including JL).
Does trading up for Mac Jones only to take Trey Lance make any sense to you? It doesn't to me. This sounds like a bunch of "insiders" that just can't let it go and admit they had it wrong.
DeleteTo clarify- I am convinced Shanahan liked Jones. Have said so all along. But I am equally convinced that as the draft process played out he liked Lance more. Heck, Shanahan has all but confirmed this. And despite what media might say based on "league sources", what happened actually backs this up.
DeleteScooter, Adam Schefter isn't THAT guy. He's not a sour puss. He's not making stuff up because he got it wrong. The problem is, that it really doesn't necessarily matter what the truth is, these things have tendency to become a thing when you let other people create the narrative.
DeleteScooter, do you remember when I suggested that ShanaLynch let the fan base in on their decision in advance of the draft? I said that on the day of their now infamous press conference. The reason I said so was because there was a huge divide developing within the 49ers fan base. 90% of the fan base were against the 49ers drafting Mac Jones, including myself. I wanted Fields, but I did see Trey as a valid secondary choice. I understand how valuable first round picks are, especially right now with the drop in the salary cap. I also understand how often first round QB's bust out. Standing pat in order to draft Jimmy's replacement is not in the same stratosphere as trading away 3 first round picks and a third rounder in order to draft him. That's the point. No matter how good Mac ends up being (and I am guessing he'll be average at best), it makes no sense to trade away 3 year's worth of first round picks in order to draft a guy whop would have been available to draft at your original spot? That's where Kyle and John got themselves into a pickle.
And frankly, what Schefter is selling seems very probable, with the strange way in which the entire 49ers draft process played out. Everyone knew who was going 1 and 2, so what's the big secret all about? Did the Jets have any problem announcing who they were picking? Did Jax? Of course not. There's no reason to keep it a secret if you have no concerns about another team jumping ahead of you, so why put on a big charade, unless you truly are unsure of your choice?
And BTW, I agree with you, Scooter. I think Kyle originally wanted Mac.
DeleteThe point is, I highly doubt Kyle changed his mind at the very last minute, in fact, Kyle claims to have been drawing up plays for Lance on the plane ride back from Justin Fields' pro day, which occurred on 3/30/21, almost a full month ahead of the draft.
That means Kyle had an entire month to reveal his choice, but for some odd reason decided to put on a big charade, keeping it a secret even from trey Lance and his family, and causing a lot of unnecessary stress around the decision. This allowed other people to form their own narratives, and unfortunately, Kyle and John end up looking like they bungled the biggest draft pick of their careers.
AND BTW< back to Kyle's podcast reveal ... are really saying that, if you were GM john Lynch, you wouldn't be upset if your HC went out in public, on the internet, and insinuated that you and your front office staff were asleep at the wheel, and subsequently outmaneuvered by an opposing team's front office? And not just an opposing team, but a divisional rival?
Really Scooter?
I don't think it is anywhere as big of a deal you seem to think it is.
DeleteScooter, don't you find it amusing that all of the sudden, Kyle is all in on Jimmy G? lol.
DeleteBTW, remember this quote:
"You're right Scooter .... it's no big deal, as long as the 49ERS are winning."
Stash that quote away, for a rainy December day!
Yep, so long as the team wins it doesn't matter. And if they don't they will deserve the scrutiny, just like any other team.
DeleteShanahan isn't all in on Jimmy G. But he is the guy on the roster who Shanahan currently believes gives them the best chance to win. Maybe that will remain the case all season, maybe it won't.
This man just said the 49ers are losing their collective reputations around the league!! WTF? Where in the Will Smith Genie did you get that♂️♂️♂️. Enquiring minds young man, Enquiring minds want to know
DeleteTwo observations on Jimmy G:
ReplyDeleteThis was one of the rare occasions when he had all the weapons on offense and a healthy O line at the same time. Well, almost all -- since Mostert lasted all of one series.
When under pressure in a shrinking or collapsing pocket, he was moving within the pocket as well as he did in his first 5 games in 2017. The ACL injury may have put a mental block in the past two years where he'd either be freeze in the pocket and take a sack or force a quick throw into coverage. He showed more patience moving within the pocket -- buying time while the receivers ran their routes. Perhaps competition from Lance helped overcome any mental block. More confidence in his O line and a full off-season of practice also helps.
Hey Mood, yah, I don't thin k there's any question that Jimmy was having trouble moving past that injury from a mental standpoint. The knee brace, for me, was a dead give away. I've played yesterday's gamer back twice now, and I re-watched Jimmy from a mechanics standpoint, and what a difference a year makes. Heck, what a difference compared to the preseason. Jimmy was not only moving better, he was much calmer with his footwork. I saw very little of his happy feet, where he quickly shuffles his feet back and forth waiting to throw the football. And as a result he was throwing with a much better base, and he actually used his legs and hips in concert with his throwing motion, and the results were striking. He was not only moving well, show2ing off some mobility, but he was also much more accurate with his downfield passing. I was particularly impressed with Jimmy, Elijah Mitchell, and Deebo (although he obviously can't allow the defender to punch the ball out like that with the game on the line). Mostert looked fantastic early, as usual, before he tore his knee up.
DeleteMy biggest disappointments on offense were they way in which Kyle used Trey Lance, as well as my disappointment with Trey Sermon and Brandon Aiyuk. I find it very discouraging that Trey Sermon would get most of the first team snaps through training camp and preseason, only to find himself at #4 on the depth chart. And Brandon Aiyuk, something is off with that whole situation, and I am discouraged by his lack of targets.
All in all, I did not expect the Detroit Lions, with an entirely new coaching staff, QB, a weak defense, and probably the worst WR corp in the entire league, to have a chance of beating the 49ers. ShanaLynch are way too far into this roster build to have a young, inexperienced team nearly knock them off in week one, but thankfully, the Niners pulled out the win, and live to see another day!
Do you guys really think Lynch was cool with Kyle talking openly about the Rams front office outmaneuvering the 49ers front office, in public? Seriously? Do you think that's the kind of thing that people just let go by? If that's what you think, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.
ReplyDeleteFYI, of course John Lynch was upset about that, but it sure seems like it goes deeper than that. These guys are clearly no longer working well as a team, and knowing the way John is, and the way Kyle is, I'd be willing to guess the root of the problem is that Kyle is stubborn, and doesn't work well with others.
We'll find out soon enough. Despite their contract extensions, this season is critical for both guys.
Just out of curiosity where is the article or source that says Lynch was upset with Kyle? I'd be interested in reading it.
DeleteThere is no such article Shoup. There was some media/ local content providers that speculated immediately after that Lynch and co would not likely be pleased, and it appears some have taken that as fact.
DeleteIn that case I am not that worried.
DeleteIn fact, if it's based on the Podcast, if anything it makes Kyle look bad. As "he" is the one that received a phone call saying they needed to make a move now. And he chose to go to sleep instead of following up on it.
That doesn't reflect poorly on John Lynch at all. He's the one that got the phone call, so he's the one that needed to act if he really wanted Matt.
Given that info, I don't even know how in on Matt Stafford he was. I'm actually guessing he was more upset that Matt went to the Rams than he is that SF didn't get him.
49Reasons, did you notice there were 60 posts up to this point and you've made 28 of them? Just sayin' . . .
ReplyDeleteOne more point, George, lol.
ReplyDeleteWas it really a smart idea to put all of that draft capitol into a backup QB, at least for this season, when you knew depth was an issue at CB and WR? Now what? The old man - Richard Sherman? Do you guys realize the WR talent the Niners will be facing this season, especially within their own division. I am not saying the season is over, but my gosh, how much better would this team be if they had shored up the CB and WR positions, and didn't have all of these high draft picks over the last 2 years (at least 6), sitting on the bench and not contributing to this team?
And can somebody explain the Aaron Banks and Trey Sermon picks? A 2nd and 3rd round pick - both healthy scratches ahead of week 1? How about Kinlaw and Aiyuk, last year's top 2 picks?
Meanwhile, unfortunately Mathew Stafford, the guy who Kyle implied the 49ers front office fell asleep on, which allowed the Rams to outmaneuver them in a trade, looks amazing in a Rams uniform.
How does John Lynch end up looking with Trey Lance on the bench, despite 3 1st round picks and a 3rd round pick in order to get him, while the Rams were able to offload Goff and his contract, and now Mathew Stafford lighting it up in a blowout for the Rams VS a far tougher opponent than the lowly Lions?
The Lions, SMH!
The Banks and Sermon picks aren't hard to explain. But not having either guy suit up week 1 is very disappointing. Likewise the Kinlaw and Aiyuk picks aren't hard to explain, but having Kinlaw out with his knee and Aiyuk MIA is also disappointing.
DeleteI get the angst around lack of CB depth, but it is in keeping with the 49ers FO decision-making process since they got here. They don't place the emphasis on CB that most fans do. They did spend a 3rd and 5th rounder on CBs, so they didn't ignore it, but they clearly don't feel they need to spend 1st or 2nd rounders on the position.
The thing that really surprised me was not bringing in a veteran to be the backup guy during the FA period. They have now picked up Norman, but they should have had a veteran signed through camp they felt comfortable turning to.
I must say, I'd like to know what it is about Gareon Conley that has teams so reluctant to sign him.
Scooter
DeleteGareon Conley signed a one year contract with the Texans.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/houston-texans/chris-conley-16800/
That's the WR Chris Conley.
DeleteMy bad...got Gareon and Chris mixed up.
DeleteThis may answer your question why no team has signed Gareon for the 2021 season?
On April 29, 2020, the Texans declined the option on Conley's contract, making him a free agent in 2021. He was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp on July 31, 2020. He was activated on August 10, 2020. He was then placed on injured reserve on September 7, 2020 and he ended up spending the entire 2020 season on IR, after originally getting arthroscopic surgery on his ankle in January.
He may have a medical problem, or he can not pass a physical for the 2021 season?
Sources indicate Niners will sign Dre Kirkpatrick to replace Verrett. https://twitter.com/LombardiHimself/status/1437529574825332738?s=20.
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time believing that a team with Super Bowl aspirations, is at Defcon 2 at the CB position, hoping for quality play from 2 has-been CB's, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.
DeleteWasn't everybody and their sister questioning the CB position coming into the season? Everybody knew this was the sketchiest position in terms of depth, except for ShanaLynch, apparently, who bet the house on Verrett staying healthy, of all players? WTF!
Meanwhile, they have how much invested at the QB position?
$33+ Million this year, plus 3 firsts and a third?
That's not good football business sense!
49Reasons: YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!!!!
DeleteWell my friend, when you become GM of the 9ers you can
fix all the problems you have accused the 9er FO of being responsible for...And just maybe? You can hire Seb to be your HC? I can NOT wait for all those Lombardi trophies......OR MAYBE I CAN, we would NOT
want to over react, would we?
BTW GEEP, what exactly is your point. Are you saying that, because John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan are in positions of power, and decision making for the 49ers, that they are beyond reproach?
DeleteBoy, I sure would love a job like that.
It comes with the territory, GEEP. When you are the Head Coach or general Manager, you are responsible for the decisions you make. That's why they get paid the big bucks. I'm glad you are more confident than I am. I feel like I've seen this movie at least one too many times, at this point, don't you?
RIP Parys Haralson. Awful news. Way too young.
ReplyDeleteScooter,
DeleteThat is sad news. My prayers to his family and close friends.
Mostert to opt for season-ending surgery. Niners to try out Artavis Pierce, RB Oregon State.
ReplyDeleteVideo on Pierce:

Another big loss.
Delete49ers have signed Kerryon Johnson to the PS.
Back in the late 80' the 49ers were very concerned with a knee injury that was slowing down their starting RB Wendell Tyler. Tyler also had the issue of fumblelitis.
ReplyDeleteOnce Wendell was gone it opened the door for Roger Craig who by all intents should be in the HOF.
Maybe history repeats itself with Mostert and Mitchell. I know that this was only one game for Mitchell, but he showed exceptional quickness, cutback ability, vision and strength.
It's beginning to look like Mostert is never going to complete a full season. Mitchell may prove to be the RB that could be relied on to, umm, carry the backfield.
Mostert likely won't ever be the guy for the 49ers now. Sad, as his potential in this offense is great.
DeleteLet's hope the Mitchell/ Sermon/ Hasty show is good.
That's an excellent and positive parallel, AES.
DeleteThanks Mood. Like Mostert, I was a big fan of Tyler. He was one of the most explosive RB's I had ever seen. But like Mostert, he also had a checkered period of staying on the field.
DeleteInteresting that they opted for Johnson. No speed guy, he, and a ton of injury history. Scratching my head a bit. A positive: A bit shifty, can get tough yards and pass protect. Idk.
ReplyDeleteI've watched his Detroit highlights, where he started like a storm until a knee injury. Decent speed, accelerates quickly, runs through tackles. Reminds me of Sermon. Maybe he's here to push him.
DeleteNice breakdown from David Lombardi (YouTube) on Elijah Mitchell and thoughts on Mostert.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteYou are right -- it's a good one! Thanks for reminding me of Lombardi's channel.
DeleteYour welcome, Mood.
DeleteI really do not like to play GM and pontificate as if I know better than the ShanaLynch Collective. However, I was really surprised when they let Gallman go in favor of Hasty -- most likely to save some cash.
ReplyDeleteI has expected ShanaLynch to cut Hasty and re-sign him to the PS. The chance that any team would sign Hasty was close to zero. He was a UDFA who was on PS last season until called for duty where he didn't exactly flash. There are many RBs out there like Hasty. Had Mostert stayed healthy, Hasty would most likely been cut when Wilson would have returned.
OTOH, Gallman is a 4th round pick and a proven NFL back who averaged 4.4 ypc carry last season as a starter. He was the best pass blocker among the Niners backs. Although he was the slowest of the Niners' backs, I liked his contact balance and ability to find the holes.
I note that Hasty missed two or three blocks on blitz pickups against the Lions -- one of which led to a sack, IIRC. Third and longs are going to be eventful with this inexperienced RB group. Maybe we'll see more help from TE or Juice in these situations.
Pass blocking is something that Johnson would bring, if healthy. I guess that goes to you point about Gallman. And what may be worse is the issue with Sermon, whatever it is. Another Joe Williams?
DeleteThe FO and HC have problems, but I tell myself you can say that about most if not all of the teams.
On to Philadelphia.
To early to make any pronouncement on Sermon. Let's look at the positive side. Trent Williams is in mid-season form:
