I see some talking heads proclaiming Lance is ready to start, and how he should be stealing reps with the ones from Jimmy G.
From my laymen's perspective he needs more time to integrate his technique/mechanics to muscle memory as his bad habits fade away. Not sure what the rush is but it's not going to happen before the season begins. Jimmy will start the season and Lance will have until the trade deadline to convince Shanny he's ready.Jauan Jennings' is on another level according to Shanny, “I mean, we had a lot of young guys play last year by default with the injuries that happen and some of the situations we were in,” Shanahan said. “So I want those guys going out there competing and showing they can play good football. And I’ve been really impressed with (WR) Trent (Sherfield) so far with how he’s done that. I’ve been extremely impressed with Jauan, how he’s gone out there and done that. And it’s only one game in, but I need everyone else to get to that level also.”
I have Jennings as the 5th wide receiver on Shanny's depth chart as of right now. I don't see a scenario where James makes this roster, and Hurd may find himself on the outside looking in as well.
NOTE TO 9ER FO, JL and KS
ReplyDeleteSee if FA OG Nick Easton is available for a workout. He was cut by NO as a salary cap casualty. He's worth a look, if the 9er FO can negotiate a reasonable salary.

NOTE TO 9ER FO, JL and KS
ReplyDeleteA 2nd option: See if the NYJ cuts RG Greg Van Roten after drafting USC OG Alijah Vera-Tucker in RD #1 with draft pick #14. If the Jets don't cut him, call Jets HC Robert Saleh and see if they can make a trade. (A 9er player for Roten).
Greg Van Roten would be a good fit for the 9ers ZBS and has experience playing multiple O-Line positions.
That's not a bad idea Geep.
DeleteWe will likely need to cut a good interior Dlineman, so perhaps a swap could be made without losing a draft pick.
I wonder if Shanny has been contemplating keeping 5 wr's with the idea of Matthews as the emergency 6th wr.

ReplyDelete"They're going to need both quarterbacks, period," Baldinger said. "Trey Lance isn't winning this job in the next two weeks. I just think that's kind of a reach to think that's possible."

After missing 10 days on the COVID list, CB Emmanuel Moseley is now dealing with a hamstring strain. It’ll be interesting to see which CB works opposite Jason Verrett this week.
Who will emerge, Lenoir, Thomas or ?

Both Williams and Coleman are dealing with knee issues that are considered minor. Williams has swelling in the knee after getting tangled in yesterday’s practice.
No way in hell Banks will be ready until midway into the season. That makes it interesting as to who will be the backup center given Shanny does not believe in weakening another position by moving a starter.

Delete"No way in hell Banks will be ready until midway into the season.....I can't disagree with that....So much for he's a plug and play RG!
* And what happens if Brunskill gets hurt? Is Compton the next man up?
* Speaking of TW, what happens if he's hurt? J. Moore would be a disaster and I'm questioning if S. Coleman has shown enough to make the 53 cut?
* It looks like the O-Line could be the 9ers number one problem to start the 9ers 2021 season?
At CB, I'd go with the rook CB Lenoir, he looked like he belonged against KC. If that continues against the Chargers and Raiders, he could get a start against the Lions.
McKivitz didn't look too shabby last week. Anxious to hear how he does in the Chargers practices. I'm not too worried yet, but you're right; if Compton has to log any significant snaps we're in trouble.
DeleteBanks' struggles with technique surprise me because Notre Dame has very good offensive line coaches.
Razor
DeleteIf McKivitz can keep the "D" off the 9er QB against the Chargers and Raiders, I'd have to agree he should be the next man up. But I still think the FO should try to sign another RG as competition and back up insurance.
Like you, I'm also surprised that Banks inability (at least so far), to become the starting RG.
Looks like the 9ers' new offensive line coach, Chris Forester, will be tested between now and the season opening game agains the lions.
The knock against Banks is slow feet. Has anyone seen looked closely at his snaps against the Chiefs to see if his feet movement are an issue?

Spoke with Alex Smith about the start of his second career and, of course, the #49ers QBs:
"If he stays healthy, I think (Garoppolo is) going to have a big year."
Couldn't agree more.
Rosen is back on the streets:

49ers waived QB Josh Rosen, who now has played for four NFL teams since Arizona drafted him in the first round in 2018. They waived him to claim CB Davontae Harris off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens.
Saw this coming before they even drafted Lance. Never did quite get the excitement some had about a guy the team literally only brought in because they had no other choice, a week after they had brought Josh Johnson in off the street as a preferred choice.
DeleteUnfortunately for Rosen I don't think he has accepted yet that he is no longer going to brought in by teams to compete to start. He's got to get on board with the idea he's in a fight just to make it as a 3rd stringer these days and be happy with it. Otherwise he'll be out of the league.
Yep, he's complaining about reps when they're earned not given.

ReplyDeleteA clear sign the team is wirried about the CB position. First Webb, now Harris. Unfortunately I doubt either guy will really be a solution.
DeleteSuddenly there are now 3 positions of concern.
ReplyDeleteOline, CB and ST coverage.
Fortunately, these areas seem to surround backup units. It's beginning to look like Banks will not even be an efficient backup let alone a starter as was anticipated when he was drafted in the 2nd rd. That is disappointing.
I believe that our CB starters are more than capable, but the 2nd unit is still in flux. If we go into the season with the current status quo things could turn real dicey if a starter goes down. Lenoir and Ambry will need to accelerate their training. On the other hand, I see Hufanga making some important plays for us when he enters the game.
Our ST coverage unit needs a true gunner that could get downfield and make some noise. Mostert used to be that guy, but obviously he's our RB starter. Hopefully, someone will step up and secure that position.

ReplyDelete"Stafford, Rams struggle in joint practice with Raiders"
ReplyDeleteThere were dark clouds over the Los Angeles Rams during their first joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday, and it had nothing to do with an unusual August rainstorm that alternated from drizzling to downpour and back again during the two-hour session.
Matthew Stafford threw three interceptions, the offensive line was often overwhelmed and the run game mostly ineffective, the second time in less than two weeks the Rams starters have not been able to get on track in a workout with another team.
Despite seeing similar issues from their recent practice with the Dallas Cowboys, coach Sean McVay isn’t concerned by those struggles yet.
COULD IT BE? THAT the LA lams and their new Superman QB may be having a problem?

Looks like the LA Lams # one rated "D" isn't the only one having problems?
ReplyDeleteDerek Carr: "Making plays against the Rams’ defense gives us confidence"
Derek Carr and the Las Vegas offense had a solid day for the first of two practices with the Rams in Southern California this week. Carr was able to hit some key passes down the field, while the team’s revamped offensive line held its own against Los Angeles’ group, led by defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

I have one for you guys. Can somebody explain to me why ShanaLynch drafted Aaron Banks .... in the second round?
ReplyDeleteWTF is happening? This guy was never a good fit for this offense. He's a "slow-footed" OG. It's all right there on tape. It was all right there in his scouting report. Since when does a slow-footed OG fit in Kyle's outside zone run blocking scheme. I hated this pick when it happened, and now it appears he's exactly who I thought he was. I am really concerned about how the FO ended up landing on Aaron Banks, in any round, let alone in the second round.
I know hindsight is 20-20, but the 49eers desperately needed to upgrade the RG position, and they drafted a kid who not only doesn't fit their system, but he's also extremely soft for a 330 plus pound OL!
Well, the reason for drafting an OG in the 2nd round I think was sound and easily explainable, but yeah, Banks was an unexpected choice for mine too.
DeleteAs to whether he is or isn't a fit or any good we quite frankly don't know. No point getting ahead of ourselves. I know the thought after drafting him (amongst fans) was he could/ should step right into the starting the lineup given where he was drafted, which is very unlikely now for a variety of reasons. So understandable there is some fan concern. But too early to tell or write him off.
Agree. He's clearly not a plug-and-play starter, but it's too early to write him off.
DeleteBTW guys, I'm not going to argue with anyone in regards to whether Trey Lance is ready to start week 1.
ReplyDeleteBut what I will argue is that there is no way to know where he's at after the way the chiefs game played out for Lance. I don't feel like Kyle handled Trey's first game well at all, and you know what, a lot of people, including folks in the national media, feel the same way I do. Trey never had a chance, because his OL never gave him a chance ... that's the bottom line. And that's on Kyle, IMO!
Kyle better change his approach in the next preseason game!
Kyle basically asked Trey Lance to pole vault with a broomstick! Not exactly they best way to do it!
ReplyDeleteHowever, as counterproductive as it was for Kyle to allow the Chiefs defensive line to TEE OFF on Trey Lance in his first live NFL action, I am actually glad it was Trey Lance who was forced to take a bunch of unnecessary hits in the pocket, and not Jimmy G, because while it probably did take it's toll on the rookie confidence, Jimmy G would have probably left Levi's Stadium on crutches.
49Reasons,
ReplyDeleteOne thing I do know, is that we don't know what we don't know.
Football has and alway will play itself out on the field. It's to early to close the book on Banks. I remember one Jerry Rice looking very underwhelming early in his career. I remember many people criticizing the 49ers front office when the team drafted a two-time major knee injured Frank Gore.
There are hundreds of the same stories throughout the NFL.
I too, was disappointed with AB' play last Saturday, but he's not going anywhere. I expect him to pickup his play throughout the season.
I am not closing the book on Banks but it's highly discouraging given that he was supposed to be a plug and play OG.
DeleteHe's older, more experienced, and had great Oline coaching in college, but that also means he's much closer to a finished product and much closer to his ceiling.
That was not the case with Rice.
I'm tempted to say it was the ND mystique regarding their OL, but the performances of the Glinch should have tempered those expectations.
