Cut Down Day

Here we are with our first trade coming out of training camp:

Jonas Griffith has been traded from San Francisco to Denver, with the 49ers also sending a 2022 seventh-round pick to the Broncos, and the Broncos sending back a 2022 sixth-round pick and a 2023 seventh-round pick.

The 49ers have until 1pm PT to get down to 53 players.

  1. Griffith had a good camp and is a promising player. Wouldn't have made the 53 so the trade was helpful. I still expect most of the players that the Niners want back in PS to be available.

    1. I think they could cut Street and Hasty without much worry.

I'd like to see the 9ers try to trade Street for an OG that can start.
The GB Packers have released O-lineman Ben Braden, who was thought to be competing for the starting RG. In fact, when GB offensive line coach, Adam Stenavich met with reporters on Thursday, he had this interesting nugget of information: “I’m really excited about Ben and what’s going to happen with him. I think he’s really going to compete for a starting job at guard or tackle.”
Not much info on him, other than he was on Packers practice squad and played at Michigan. What, if anything, do you know about him?

    3. Packers make first surprise cut, release OL Ben Braden.
      * Braden played in six games, including both playoff games, for the Packers last season. He was competing to be a starter at guard.

    4. Don't know much about Braden other than he went undrafted. Maybe a zbs is a better fit for his skillset.

    5. I don't see a ZBS guard ready to start in this league being cut and becoming available to replace Brunskill in the Niners' 53. Maybe a backup-level guard could be picked up to be a member of the 16-player PS -- but he'd have to be better than McKivitz.

9ers cut McKivitz, so he wouldn't be competition.
From what we've seen from Brunskill the 1st 2 pre-season games, I'm not too sure he'd be competition either, but he did look better against the Raiders backup D players.

  2. Have to admit, this one surprised me.....
Patriots release Cam Newton, name Mac Jones starting QB

    1. I guess there's really no major upside to Cam starting over Jones. This is not a Patriots team that will go deep into the play-offs, if they make the play-offs at all. They have a decent O line, running back room and defense. Might as well see if Jones is their QBOTF.

      Delete
    2. The QB most didn't want for the 49ers just made Cam Newton expendable.
It will a little interesting to see how this plays out in NE.

    3. I have never understood the hate for Mac Jones. While I am a little surprised they flat out cut Newton, Jones winning the starting QB job doesn't surprise me at all. I guess BB realises that if you are turning the keys over to the rookie there is no going back to the vet - have to ride the ups and downs.

      Delete
    4. I am not sure "hate" is the right word. I think was more about trading away 2 extra first round pick, and a third rounder, in order to move up for a QB who would almost certainly have been available at 12. Ends up Mac lasted until 15, so our concerns were validated. Also, Jones was just too similar to Garoppolo, and I have no reason to believe Mac is necessarily going to be any more durable than Garoppolo either.

I will say that I think he landed on the right team, but even then, I think he's going to be a very average QB, at least statistically. That said, if the Niners had stood pat, and taken Mac at 12, I would have been able to get behind him.

    5. And, BTW, just putting this out there again .... I am happy with Lance, and I think he's going to have a great future, but I could not wrap my head around trading for him ahead of Justin Fields, if Kyle was truly looking to replace Jimmy as soon as this season. I got behind Lance as a secondary choice, but Fields was the guy I pounded the table for.

It will be fascinating to look back at all of these guys in a couple years time. And boy, the pressure is on Kyle to get Trey Lance's development right. I am less than enthused with the job they have done thus far, particularly when it comes to Lances confidence.

      Delete
    6. Also, the Niners have a chance to win their division this year. Ain't no way the Patriots are finishing ahead of the Bills this season!

And let's face it .... Cam is washed up. If Garoppolo was still a Patriot, would Mac Jones be starting ahead of him, as a rookie? Nah.

      Delete
    7. It was definitely hate, 49reasons. You said more than once you thought he wasn't even a first rounder and a product of Bama.

What did Newton do wrong to lose the job? Nothing. He played very well in camp and preseason from all reports. Jones just did better. Would have been the same case against JG.

We'll see how it all plays out over time. But so far, Jones has looked the part and shown all the positive traits he showed at Bama. Been as advertised.

And for the record, this isn't a suggestion the 49ers took the wrong QB. Just pointing out that the hate for Jones was silly.

      Delete
    8. BTW, Scooter, you're a Mac Jones guy, so if I were you, I'd bet the house on Mac Jones for Offensive ROY.

      6/1 odds as of today.

      Delete
    9. What did Cam Newton do wrong? He had more INT's than TD's passes last season, plus he's unvaccinated, which is a huge risk to a QB room. I would have cut him also, and I am no Mac Jones guy. I think, like most players, where they get drafted affects their career. As a Patriot he has a chance to be an average starter, but he'll have his share of struggles as a rookie. They will be a run first offense this season though, so that will help him.

      Delete
    10. BTW, you aren't suggesting a QB who was drafted at 15, was worth a team trading away the 12th overall pick, 2 additional 1st round picks, and a 3rd rounder, are you? Or are you?

      Delete
    11. BTW, I am not sure if this is allowed, but I'd cut Dak Prescott for being unvaccinated, if he didn't have hundreds of millions in guarantees. That's the "leader" of your team showing the ultimate form of selfishness, IMO, and making a decision that could cost your team the season.

So yah, Cam needed to go, IMO.

      Delete
    12. If he ends up being an excellent QB, he would have been worth it. Same goes with any QB.

This TC and preseason Newton had reportedly been very good. That is what Jones was competing against. Not the beat up old QB that didn't get a preseason last year.

Yes, he will go through struggles. Every young QB does. But he has looked every bit the part of a future good NFL QB so far. Very impressive this preseason.

      Delete
    13. It's only worth trading that much draft capitol if he's truly the 3rd best QB prospect, in a loaded draft class, and I don't think he was. Was he the most pro-ready? Probably, but that's not the same thing.

We still haven't seen Mac VS the ones, have we? I watched him take 4 sacks on Sunday, with zero chance of escaping the pocket. That's way too year-2000 for my blood.

      Delete
    14. Scooter, do you believe in the reports (this was according to the Niners own FO) that Kyle was drawing up plays specifically with Trey Lance in mind, on the plane flight back from Justin Fields' pro day?

      Just curious

      Delete
    15. Just one of the many things 49reasons has said that doesn't make any sense. I never understood the vitriol thrown at Mac by a lot of 49ers fans and media in general. He fit this offense quite well and now we get to see Lance and Jones for the next few years so 9er fans can lose their minds even more.

    16. "If he ends up being an excellent QB...." it will be another example of the Patriots getting a bargain QB.

  5. I thought that Griffith might have made it to the 53. He showed good speed, instincts and tackling leverage.

The future draft picks are inconsequential because of their late draft position.
But, what's done is done and we move on.

Does this move mean that Hilliard makes the team? Perhaps the FO is making a consciouses effort to go with more youth.

    1. Seems they didn't have a spot for him on the roster and received a few calls for a trade.

  6. Looks to me like the team is clearing all the 4+ year vets on the fringe of the roster so they don't need to guarantee the salaries. Wouldn't be shocked if some are brought back.

    2. McKivitz is definitely a surprise based on how they talked about him last year after picking him. Though based on level of play, less so.

But man... keeping Tom Compton over McKivitz? Over Brendel? Big yikes.

    3. Compton is a big surprise. I hope he doesn't have to play.

Will be interesting to see how those that were so against the 9ers drafting Jones handle it, if he takes NE to the playoffs? It will be BB that got them there, not Jones.

    1. I just think its funny how anti-Jones some people were.

For mine there were 5 really good looking QBs in this draft. I'd have been happy with any of them. Very happy they took Lance.

      Delete
    2. Yep on Jones. High floor and low ceiling. But let's see what happens; maybe his ceiling isn't as low as some think. It seems like the main reason for thinking that is his relative lack of athletic ability. I still think that "deficit" can be overcome with mental ability (but that usually takes some time to develop).

      Delete
    3. Lets not forget Newton missed time due to Covid, which opened up the door for Jones. They traded up to choose between Lance, Jones and Fields. Fields was eliminated rather quickly and Lynch, Shanny and the majority of the coaching staff came back with Lance.

      Delete
  10. Shanny liked Jones. There's no denying that. He just liked Lance more. Both look like they'll end up being pretty good.
