Matthew 9

With the recent admission that Shanny is concerned about the marriage between the "great" quarterback, Matthew Stafford and Sean McVay, I thought it might be appropriate to go down the list of pro's and con's of the Rams new gunslinger.

Pro's:

He'll be playing in a proven offense with better wide receivers.

Never had much of a running game. He'll have one with the Rams. He'll be that more dangerous.

He's tough as nails. He's not gonna flinch like Goff in the face of pressure or after hitting him.

He's no longer playing for the Detroit Lions.

Con's:

Never won a playoff game. At 33, he's yet to show he elevates the play of those around him.

Rams defense is on the decline. Sure they've still got Donald, and Ramsey but they lost quite a few defensive coaches and the rest of the defense is no names.

He's old at 33 due in part to poor body maintenance. He's got a bad back. Taken a beating behind his porous offensive lines over the years.

"I mean, this past year was bad," Stafford said. "I had the partially torn UCL in my right thumb, I tore my UCL on my left elbow on the second to last play of the Houston game that nobody knew about, trying to stiff arm a guy. That's why I started wearing a sleeve on my left arm because I had all sorts of tape underneath it, just to hold it in place.  I broke my cartilage on my eighth rib in Green Bay. I also tore something [in the back of] my left knee. And then I had a subtalar, right ankle sprain.”

The Rams offensive line has a new coach, and they'll also have a new center. They'll want to emphasize the passing game with Stafford under center. It looks as though they are mimicking the 49ers recent moves to beef up the front with Corbett at pivot and Evans at RG. It's going to take time to gel.

Is Stafford an upgrade? You bet he is, as long as he's still standing. He'll be playing in a tougher division. What other pro's and con's can you add to this list?

  1. The Rams new 2021 season QB has this to look forward to: LT: While the Rams OLT Andrew Whitworth has been a 3 time pro bowl LT, he will turn 40 Y/O in Dec. He should have retired in 2020! No NFL LT has ever been a starter at age 40 Y/O and his backup, Joseph Noteboom, is coming off a leg injury and lost his LG job to David Edwards.
Bosa will make Whitworth look his age and Stafford will have a long day.

It doesn't get much better for the Rams at LG. David Edward was a 5th Round draft pick (169th pick), in the 2019 draft.
His overall PFF grade came in at 70.6 for the 2020 season.

The departure of Austin Blythe, who signed a free-agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, left the Rams with a void as they begin a new era with quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Rams new 2021 Center will be Brian Allen. Allen missed the 2020 season due to a knee injury.

Right Guard, Austin Corbett had been scheduled to be the starting center and the Rams coaching staff believed Bobby Evans would work out as the starting RG. That has apparently
not worked out, as Corbett is now listed as the starting RG?
The Rams new O-Line coach, Keven Carberry, has his work cut out for him and his success, or failure, will have an impact on their new QB Mathews....

Our defensive front should be the strongest that it's been since 2019 when Buckner was here.
I expect Bosa to be back early on in the season and Kinlaw to have a huge impact given his rookie year playing experience and a real training camp this season. But just having Bosa back will improve the entire frontline.

I believe that special D-packages will be inserted when playing Seattle and Arizona. Arden Key and Ebukam could play pivotal rolls because of their edge speed in helping to nullify Wilson and Murray scrambling to the edges.
I'm really excited about our defense this season.

  4. Stafford is a very good QB, with great arm talent. Perversely, that arm talent, plus having Megatron, persuaded most of his OCs at the Lions to install a passing offense that put too much emphasis on his ability to get the ball downfield, especially in his early years.

Jim Bob Cooter brought a more balanced attack that included a lot more quick game and Stafford has been a lot more efficient since 2015 as a result, even after Cooter was let go. However, Stafford had a pretty much non-existent running game to help him out over that same period.

I expect that with the Rams, McVay will continue to emphasise a strong running game. He will continue to emphasise the play action game. He will continue to emphasise a balanced passing game that attacks all levels of the field, and does an excellent job of getting receivers open. This is a combination of things Stafford just hasn't had all at the same time at the Lions.

I have to admit, I am concerned about what the Rams may be able to accomplish with Stafford at QB.

What you say is TRUE, but Stafford has not played against a team that will pressure him like the 9ers
D-Line will. And if you have read my first post, his O-line is not the best.
As good as Stafford is, not even he can complete a pass to a receiver when he's running from pressure, or when he's on his backside.

      Delete
  5. Stafford should be a big upgrade in terms of how he handles pressure. With that said he does commit a fair amount of turnovers and isn’t really an upgrade over Goff when throwing from a clean pocket.
This year should tell us if it’s really just a Detroit thing or if he’s just a talented QB that’s occasional mental gaffs hold him back.

    1. Stafford is the most talented quarterback McVay has ever coached, however Stafford failed to deliver in Detroit. In 12 seasons, he led the Lions to 0 division titles and 0 playoff wins. He’s 0-3 in the postseason and hasn’t scored a touchdown since the first quarter of his second playoff game, but according to McVay's loose lips from practice, "bro, dude's a bad MF-er".

      Delete
  6. IMO, Rams RB Cam Akers success or failure, will determine if Stafford is successful or not!
If the 9ers stop the Rams run game and can make them one dimensional without stacking the box, Bosa and Ebukam won't give Stafford the time he'll need to get his receivers open.

I also expect Armstead to move back inside and have a better year, as well as DJ Jones and Kinlaw to collapse the pocket.
If Dee Ford can contribute, the 9er D will return to 2019 form.

I won't be surprised to see the 9ers sweep the Rams and ruin the their Playoff dreams.

    2. Being able to move Armstead back inside on passing downs should help a lot but I don’t expect much from Ebukam.
I think fans are overrating him as a pass rusher. To be honest I think he’s average to below average in that regard, but I hope we can add an edge to alleviate my concerns.

    3. Shoup, Kocurek loves first step quickness in his nascar rushers. Ebukam has never been really given the opportunity to sic the quarterback, and he'll have his best chance in this wide 9 under a premier tutor.

    4. Razor,

I understand he hasn't been given much of a chance... but he hasn't been given much because he hasn't been very good at it.
This is not like Shaq Barret who was getting pressure when he got opportunities but didn't get opportunities because the players above were great. This is a guy who when asked to rush the passer didn't do well at it and because of this started getting fewer and fewer opportunities.

In my opinion this season will sink or swim based on the pass rush. If the Pass rush is good they could make noise in the playoffs, if not they are team fighting for a playoff spot and a chance at an early exit.

  8. Matt Maiocco, others around the 49ers organization agree with me, Kyle's over-the-top podcast candidness in regards to Stafford/Rams, a definite "misstep" on behalf of the Niners Head Coach! (Maiocco)

Sorry Scooter. Some things are indefensible! Why are you talking about Mathew Stafford the way that you were, while pretending the Niners still have faith in Garoppolo.

Spoiler Alert: He doesn't. Kyle does not have faith in Jimmy G., in case anyone is wondering. That cat is clearly out of the bag now!

    1. It's obvious that Shanahan has his concerns regarding Garoppolo. Those concerns and or doubts were validated back in April when the 49ers drafted Lance.
We can spend time looking under every (proverbial) rock to find flaws in Shanahan' handling of the QB drafting, McVay/Shanahan podcast, Stafford comments and Garoppolo's future.
But for me, all the questions have been answered by drafting Trey Lance. No matter what Shanahan says about Stafford or any QB, Lance is the future and settles it for me.

      Delete
    2. Why did they give up 3 first round picks to take Lance while pretending they still have faith in Garoppolo?

AES is 100% correct. Nothing has changed, 49reasons. They've already told JG and the rest of the NFL what they think of JG. Everyone knows they not only explored options to upgrade the position, but acted on it aggressively. After watching Stafford, as they should have done after he was known to be available, Shanahan really liked him. Big deal.

Maiocco, like others, feels this can only cause harm. Good for him. But honestly, if JG is fine sticking around after the team traded three 1st rounders to get his replacement, I think he can handle hearing the team did indeed look at some other options too.

      Delete
    3. I think it was a screw up on Kyle’s part for certain. I have no problem with him talking about other QBs and praising them but he shouldn’t have done so in a way that degraded his own guy.
Handling it this way undermines Jimmy to the team and his potential value. We all know he’s not the qbotf but he needs to prop Jimmy up if he thinks there’s any chance of him starting should Lance not e ready or get hurt.
It was a misstep but still a misstep against someone not long for the roster so it’s not as huge deal.
The bigger question is if you. Feel this way why keep his cap hit on the roster?

      Delete
    4. Gotta keep him cuz you can't give the job to your draft pick. He has to earn it fair and square. If he can win the job they'll unload Jimmy and his cap hit. They've got until the trade deadline to let it play out.

      Delete
    5. How did he degrade his own guy?

Both he and McVay both said during the pod that JG was a really good starting QB when healthy, and that health is the issue.

Shanahan then said Stafford was "the man" and underrated, and that after watching him he really liked him and wanted him. That isn't degrading to JG. The team had already determined they were looking to move on, and Stafford was one of the guys they looked at as a replacement. Stafford, btw, has missed very little time throughout his career.

Of note - the team did not trade 3 1st round picks (+ a 3rd rounder) to bring in Stafford. They paid that for Lance. Tells us all we need to know about how the team feels about Lance... and Stafford.

      Delete
    6. I still feel a good portion of this effuse Stafford praise is covert psychological warfare on Shannies part. Stafford knows he hasn't done sh*t in his career. Shannie wouldn't be above adding that much more pressure on the guy, would he?

    6. After listening to the podcast it seemed like Shanahan Coach speak along the same lines as what a Coach says about an opponent during game week. I think we tend to get to caught up in finding the secret meaning in what these guys are saying instead of focusing on what is right in front of our face. Was KS interested in Stafford? Probably but the team never made an offer so he was interested enough to outbid the Rams for him. He went the opposite direction and traded draft picks to pick up a low cost option for the next few years. That tells me they didn't have a lot of interest in bringing in a vet QB (maybe Rodgers but he wasn't an real option) focusing more on trying to set up a situation where they could afford to resign key FA's moving forward which you can do a lot easier with a QB on a rookie contract. I think they wound up with the situation they hoped for with JG starting and hopefully remaining healthy and the kid getting developed with the ability to step in at some point in the next year or two.

  13. I have always liked Stafford and hoped the 49ers were going to make a move for him 3 years ago when the Lions were a little down on him- I think he does fine as Rams will look to get the ball out of his hands early and really on RAC yards. McVay likes the deep ball and hopefully that will play into the 49ers hands tho- I think the 49ers DL has the potential to be stellar.... and I also believe/hope D Ryans plays more aggressive (man/press to disrupt timing routes and blitzes). That said, the DL may be such a strength that blitzing won't be necessary.

JG's worth will be determined by how he performs in 2021.
If JG's ego is too frail to handle what KS said, he should have ask for a trade! HE DID NOT DO THAT! He will be the
starting against the Lions on Aug. 21st. How long he remains there will be determined by how he plays, AS IT SHOULD BE.

  17. Somewhat off-topic. Sherman takes full responsibility for the actions that led to his arrest. Yet at the same time pleads not guilty to the charges that resulted from those actions. How can someone claim "full responsibility" yet dodge the legal and criminal consequences? I get it, this is a legal maneuver no doubt orchestrated by his legal counsel. But come on Sherman, are you responsible or not? Do you have a debt to pay to society or not?

  18. It really does always come back to team health, doesn't it? I'm not happy with Kyle's newfound loose lips, as continuously dumping on your "starting QB" can only have a negative effect, and my philosophy is .... there is no reason to let the public in on exactly how Kyle feels about any player on the roster, particularly potential starters at key positions, and especially as delicate as a QB competition can be. And anytime you're hoping to potentially trade a player, the only things that should be stated in public should be in the service of boosting the player's potential trade value.

That said, Kyle still has one of the best offensive minds in the NFL, and it seems pretty clear that he's hoping to lead the NFL in rushing offense. Kyle is looking to zig while most of the NFL zags, and I love it. In fact, I love just about everything about Kyle's offense, and Kyle the play-caller.

Here are a few remaining offensive questions I have (other than health), that I'll be watching develop as we get into training camp:

    1) Trey Lance - Just how close is Trey Lance in terms of being ready to start. And, if Jimmy is the starter on opening day, does Kyle have packages of plays for Lance, particularly in the red zone?

    2) Who's going to step up to claim the WR3 role? Will Jalen Hurd finally take a regular season snap, and if so, can he make the kind of impact he seems capable of? Will there be a clear WR3, or will Kyle handle the WR3 with a "by committee" approach, depending on matchups?

    3) Will Raheem Mister and Trey Sermon establish themselves as a dominant RB tandem (I predict yes). How exactly will the RB depth chart play out? (My best guess 1.Sermon, 2.Mostert, 3.Gallman, 4.Mitchell, PS.Hasty)

    3) Will Kyle take his RPO concepts to the next level, even if Jimmy is the starter to start the season? (I'm guessing yes)

    4) How does the OL depth chart shake out? Does Aaron Banks win the starting job at RG? (I definitely think he will)

I'll never celebrate an opponent suffering from injury, but I'll admit to being a little frustrated about the Rams ability to avoid key injuries, which, with the exception of 2019 (which, no surprise, saw the Rams miss the postseason entirely), has seen the Rams consistently among the league's healthiest teams, year in and year out. Meanwhile, back in Santa Clara, I worry about the simple act of getting out of a chair, for crying out loud! At some point, we know that the law-of-averages has to catch up to 49ers - that's just the way the world turns. And that goes both ways as well ..... so, here's to the law-of-averages actually working in favor of the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 for a change, and not against them!

I admit that I'm a little bit superstitious, so I usually avoid this subject like the plague, but that unfortunately hasn't been working for me and my team, so .....

..... Let's do this! Let's all toast to these 49ers having the relatively healthy season which they are certainly due this season. It's about time the 49ers are afforded the advantages of good health for a change, heck ... I'll even take an averagely healthy season, because a relatively healthy 49ers team in 2021, looks like the most dangerous team in the NFL, bar none!

Earlier, I posted that Rams RB Cam Akers success or failure, will determine if Stafford is successful or not! Now that Cam Akers tore his Achilles tendon and will be out for the rest of the season, RB Darrell Henderson will likely be the next man up. That could be a PROBLEM...Henderson will need to show that he can stay healthy. The former Memphis RB injured his ankle in 2019 and was placed on injured reserve late in the season. He was placed in IR again last year after he suffered another high ankle sprain.
At 5'7" X 208, Henderson has good speed to run outside (Combine 40 = 4.49s), and still capable of running inside. The question is, can he stay healthy?
If Henderson is injured, IMO he'll be replaced by 2nd
year RB Xavier Jones, who I believe is the best RB the Rams have. While he did not play in 2020, it wasn't because he was a bust, it was because he was a rookie, trying to get playing time behind established RB's.
Look for him to get playing time in 2021 and a chance to show what he can do, just NOT against the 9er Defense.

Not sure if this list is up to date, but is the latest
info I've found: Bobby Brown III, Robert Rochell, Ernest Jones and Jacob Harris are the four rookie draft picks who remain unsigned for the Rams.

    6. Razor,

I agree. I think the chances of Mostert being traded anytime soon, are slim, but from some things I've heard, I could see them trading Mostert if they make it through training camp healthy at the RB position, and are convinced that Trey Sermon is who they think he is (I think he has potential to be an elite RB in this system).

I do think Mostert ended up on ShanaLynch's bad side after last year's contract dispute, and so that, sling with a lot of depth at the position, as well as his perceived trade value, would make trading him a logical possibility.

However .... I'd be shocked if they traded Mostert to the Rams, or any other team within their division.

    3. And I can hardly wait to see this kid play! The reason I think he should be the day one starter now, seem fairly obvious:

Trey hasn't played a whole lot, but the way he sees the field and understands how to read the defense, is advanced WAY beyond what his limited experience would suggest.

It's not a fair comparison, because Carson Wentz gained a lot more experience at ND State, but we all saw how well ND St. prepared Wentz for the NFL, as he broke into the league with a bang as a rookie, becoming the first rookie to win his first 2 starts without turning the ball over, and setting a number of other rookie QB records.

That said, while Wentz is impressive physically, Trey Lance is an entirely different animal!

With the possible exception of a couple guys, Lance is entering his rookie season as the most physically imposing QB in the entire NFL. We've seen over the last 10 years, these are the guys who are able to come in and thrive, many of these physically gifted QB's are thriving from day one (Kaepernick, Wilson, Jackson, Watson, Prescott, Murray, Herbert). However, Lance my be without peers in terms of being the complete package! And as Mohamed Sanu said this week, Trey also "has the 'IT' factor". Fellow 49ers teammates are already buying in on the rookie, because you cannot deny TALENT. You just know it when you see it. Game recognizes game!

As for Jimmy GQ? Well, Jimmy wasn't born with the same natural god-given talent, nor does he seem be growing as a player. He's basically the same handsome QB now, that he was in 2017. Maybe he has a better understanding of the offense, but he's lost his edge. Some guys bounce back from serious knee injuries very quickly. And SOME GUYS NEVER DO! Some guys make up for a lost step with heady football, but that's not Jimmy's strength. He's been a broken QB at times, post ACL tear. Despite the end results, he was broken for stretches during the 2019 season, and he was almost entirely broken in 2020. Even when he managed to get onto the football field, and into a rythim, he still has happy feet, poor mechanics, and he can no longer extend plays when they go off-schedule. Even an elite play-caller like Kyle needs his QB the bail him out from time to time. Jimmy is no longer that guy ... the guy we saw at the end of 2017, who was getting himself out of danger, making plays outside of the pocket, and breaking the opponents will.

And let's face it. Kyle has made it clear that he wants to replace Jimmy ASAP! Jimmy is not his guy, probably never really was, and Kyle wants everyone to know he's not his guy. I mean, how much clearer does Kyle need to make it?

So, if the QB competition is even close at the end of TC, the the best thing for this football team would be to start the rookie-phenom week 1, and trade Jimmy G away for a bag of peanuts, if he still has any trade value left whatsoever (I am not sure he does). Otherwise, release him, clear his contract off the books, declare 1st round pick - Josh Rosen, as Trey's backup .... and move the F on.

    4. 49R, I'm probably as hopeful as you are but am trying to ignore the hype about the kid. The good thing is that barring injury we'll see in pre-season, and if he proves himself as competent as Jimmy in managing the offense, the dominoes will start to fall, with the focus turning to who will be QB2.

  24. Thanks Scooter. I hope that they follow their contract signing pattern.

  25. Nice! Fred Warner signed for 5 Years!

    1. 5 years, $85 million. $40.5 million guaranteed. Well done! I also think Warner left some money on the table to stay a Niner (since CJ Moseley has the most guaranteed money for a non-edge linebacker, and Warner probably could have topped him on guaranteed).

    2. Yeah nice move to get the signing done before Training Camp started. You want the leaders on the team fully onboard.

Hope he wins many more All-Pros and Super-Bowls for us!

    3. Whoops: $95 million, not $85 million.

    4. It is a 5 year extension, so he is signed with the team for 6 more years. It will say it is a $19m/ year avg, but some of that may be brought forward to this season. Will need to see the details.

  26. Great! We needed this signing.
    Warner is All-Pro material.

  27. Warner signed, sealed, delivered. He's ours!

  28. Does the Warner signing excellerate Garoppolo' imminant departure?

I think it will come down to how Lance looks in TC. If Lance conquers the playbook and TC, Shanahan and Lynch will need to make a decision.

    1. Doubt it. I doubt his cap hit will change too much for 2021.
