The 49ers have waived linebacker, Nathan Gerry. Maybe they've liked what they've seen from Justin Hilliard. His chances to make the team have certainly increased.

Gerry would have been an intermittent type player. He likely won't be anything more than a career backup and a sub-par special teams player.
ReplyDeleteHe is about 26 yrs old and will land on his feet with another team.
I believe that Hilliard makes the team and has a much better trajectory Goin forward.
We could revisit this likelihood in August.
Nathan Gerry was a camp body.
ReplyDeleteJustin Hilliard played as a rotation LB at Ohio St. He would likely have been a starting MLB, had he played for another team.
Hilliard projects as depth for the 9ers and a potential SAM linebacker, with the ability to play both flexed out to the hash and on the line of scrimmage overtop of tight ends. He play significant snaps for Ohio St. in 2020 and will likely play on special teams thanks to his functional athleticism and tackling.
Thanks for keeping the blog going, Razor.
ReplyDeleteYour welcome, George.

ReplyDeleteHere's a good podcast with KS, Sean McVay and Peter Schrager. Good stories of when Kyle and Sean worked together.

Sounds like the 49ers really did want Stafford after all.
DeleteInteresting the positive comments all three had about Mac Jones. Kyle shared his fear that Julio might go to a team in the division - suggested that if that looked like it was going to happen, then SF would have had to try to get Julio.
DeleteThere's really a lot of good stuff in this podcast. Honest discussions.
Anyone that hasn't given it a listen really should. Fantastic insight into a range of things, with plenty of delving into the minds and thought processes of Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay. Very candid stuff. Very insightful.
DeleteAnd you are right cubus, the stuff about Mac Jones was interesting. Basically confirmed that Trey and Mac were the two they were interested in. Even called Justin Fields "the third guy".
DeleteThanks, cubus. Just listened to the whole thing. Very worthwhile.
DeleteJack Hammer's latest: Jimmy isn't long for the Niners

Yea, I'd be very surprised if Lance overtakes Jimmy in training camp. Could it happen? Sure. Is it likely? No.
DeleteMy guess would be right before the trade deadline if it's going to happen this year.
Hey guys, where is your "Kyle Shanahan throws Jimmy G. under the bus .... yet again" thread?
ReplyDeleteMy gosh, could Kyle do anything more to damage their relationship, and torpedo any trade value Jimmy has left?
No. I don't think he could!
I don't know why Kyle continues to talk about how much he wishes the Niners were able to land a capable starter to replace Jimmy this season. I have no idea how it does anything but hurt team chemistry by constantly going out there and talking about how upset he was about the Rams, a division foe, trading for a starting QB whom Kyle wishes the Niners were able to trade for, especially after all of the reports of the Niners actively pursuing multiple Garoppolo replacements.
DeleteStop fricking talking Kyle, just stop. The only thing you're doing is undermining the QB who you claim is likely to be your starting QB week 1, while giving the impression that your own FO were out-maneuvered by the Rams. If I were Jed York, John Lynch, or Paraag Marathe, I'd be livid with Kyle after that podcast!
