What To Expect: DeMeco Ryans Edition

Earlier in the year I commented on the belief that, Ryans will blitz more often and from all over the field in conjunction with the end of last years trend towards more man coverages. After adding James Bettcher to the staff, signing Verrett and drafting predominantly man coverage cornerbacks, Ryans has recently expressed his interest in being more aggressive defensively. “You will see some similarities there, but you will see some wrinkles,” Ryans said. “You will see my brand of football on it … We’re going to let our defensive line get off the ball and attack, and we’re going to clean up things behind. But we will be a more aggressive, attacking defense.” According to player reports, Ryans attempted to simplify the defense last year, and apparently has made this years version even simpler. I'm expecting Greenlaw, Warner, Tartt and the Shark to all get more opportunities behind that defensive line to blitz the quarterback, along with an obvious player like the recently signed, R-Ebukam who I believe will fill the void left by the Ford, which has yet to get out of the garage and onto the field. Samson should finish the regular season with at least 8 sacks under Kocurek's and Tapp's aggressive nature.

  1. Let the 9er D rain QB sacks, the more the merrier.

  2. Simple = play fast. So long as it is simple but sound, should be good.

Ladies and gentlemen, we've arrived at the one and only linebacker in the top 10. Warner's numbers were freakishly good for a linebacker,...

He is being rated with DB.

    1. Ryans' best work. Warner used to be a safety so doesn't surprise me.

  4. Tom Pelissero: Canadian WR/TE Jevon Cottoy is scheduled to work out for the #49ers next week, per source. He previously worked out for the Texans, Raiders, Patriots and Saints. Significant interest in the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Cottoy, who had 38 catches for the CFL's BC Lions in 2019.

  5. According to a report from Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, the San Francisco 49ers conducted a workout with hybrid wide receiver and tight end Jevon Cottoy. The 49ers have been looking to strengthen their depth at tight end behind starter George Kittle and could view Cottoy as a better pass-catching option than current backups Ross Dwelley and recently signed MyCole Pruitt.
Cottoy has worked out for the Texans, Raiders, Patriots and Saints. Per Pelissero, he is drawing “significant interest” from around the league. Cottoy was born and raised in Canada and has never played football south of the border, developed through the Canadian Football League, the 24-year old has proven to be an effective pass catcher.

In the 2018 regular season, in the Canadian Junior League, he caught 39 passes for 657 yards and eight touchdowns in just eight games. After making his first professional roster in 2019, he made 38 catches for 386 yards as a rookie. He opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19.

    1. Dwelley must be thinking to himself, what do I have to do to get some respect?

    2. Sounds like he could be an option for that big slot role they drafted Hurd for, and signed Reed for last year.

  6. Kezar Stadium is my profile pic for now.

Like Scooter said keep it simple. Live by the blitz die by the blitz, I felt on occasion Saleh needed to get a little more aggressive in this area.
