Let's Make A Deal

Let's assume the two running backs the 49ers drafted this year come into camp with a mindset 180 degrees opposite of the last one they drafted. That means they could have the luxury of trading, Mostert or Wilson as part of a package for a wide receiver or tight end. Two position groups that could use strengthening. Mostert for Ertz anyone?

  1. Rather Mostert and 2 picks for Julio

  2. I'm surprised the annual 49ers trading for OBJ rumours haven't made the rounds!

WR and TE could both use some better depth. An injury to a starter at either position would be a big blow atm. But I doubt at this juncture the team will add another big salary - I think anyone they bring in will be on a relatively cheap salary.

  3. LETS NOT MAKE THAT DEAL:
With $17.6 mil. 2021 cap space AND $10 Mil. NEEDED to sign draft picks.....
Sign FA TE Tyler Eifert for 1 year for $3 mil.
2020 SCOUTING REPORT: He finished last season with 36 receptions on 60 targets and 349 yards, which led the Jags tight end unit. He converted 22 first downs and picked up 105 yards after the catch. He managed these number playing with QB Mike Glennon. Eifert is 31 Y/O and has a history of injuries, but he's still a solid option on the edge and over the middle of the field. He's big but nimble, able to shoulder up a defender and run a precise route.

Would love the 9ers to trade with Atlanta, for WR Julio Jones. But with a $15 Mil. Per year price, it's not going to happen.

Sign FA WR Golden Tate: He offers value for the 9ers as slot receiver, for a 1 year deal at $4 Mil. salary.
Rumor has it, the 9ers have been talking with Tate, but no signing likely means he wants too much money. He is 32 Y/O and his number with the NYG decline from play for Detroit.
He may be more willing to accept a 9ers offer before the regular season starts?

  4. I'd look into Julio Jones, but I think he's just a little too cost prohibitive at this point, considering his salary, plus the fact that there will likely be a few teams bidding for his services, and driving up the price. He's coming off an injury, but he's been very reliable throughout his career.

I like the idea of adding a TE (like Eifert or Ertz) much better, although neither one of those two guys are likely to be nearly as reliable. Maybe their best bet is to target a younger, lesser accomplished TE but with upside, as a trade target, with Mostert as part of the package.

  5. 49Reasons Eagles TE Ertz salary for 2021 is $8.5 Mil. (2022-2023 are dummy years that automatically void).
He'll be a FA in 2022 and 32 Y/O. The 9ers wouldn't have to to trade, or give up a player, or draft pick and IMO $8.5 Mil is more than he's worth. Also, TE Eifers put up slightly better numbers in 2020. That, plus he played with QB Mike Glennon. That and the $5.5 Mil. difference is why I'd sign Eifert for the 2021 season.

    1. GEEP, I like Eifert, and I think he'd be a good fit, but I know he's had ongoing issues with a bad back. He's probably worth the risk at $3 Mil. though, so yah, I like it.

  6. Well, that sure was a quick chapter in the 49ers 2021 roster build!

The Niners released Marqise Lee, and then turned right around and signed Bernie Fowler.

I am guessing that Lee either failed a physical, or the Niners found he had an
    undisclosed prior injury.

I am guessing you guys know about as much as I do in regards to Fowler .... not much. These transactions haven't moved the needle in my mind. Unless Jalen Hurd looks undeniable as a viable option as the #3 (or #4) behind Aiyuk and Samuel, I am guessing the Niners will continue to look for opportunities to find additional help at receiver, and I continue to think that they will look to add to their TE group in particular.
