Reading Between The Smiles

Remember last year when the 49ers told, Bosa he's their guy if the Cardinals take, Murray? It looks as though, Shanny just told, Fields if the Jets take, Wilson, you're our guy. What do you think?

https://twitter.com/i/status/1383516297175044096 - Lombardi states that the 49ers will not be taking, Justin Fields according to his sources.

  1. Just wait till tomorrow when Trey Lance had his proday in front of KS/JL maybe than we will hear more info, cant believe it would be Jones,my gut feeling says that Trey Lance slammed it especially in zoom calls and that confirmed what they heared from Quincy Avery and what the tape showed and that there isnt much seperation in terms of floor with Justin Fields and Mac Jones but that there is a significant difference in upside in favor of Trey Lance./

  2. I think Fields is the odds on favorite for good reason, but Trey Lance is still a wildcard, no doubt.

I just don't know how Kyle can pass on Fields. He's the consensus #2, and all of the data suggests he's the perfect fit!

Assuming Lawrence goes 1, and Wilson 2, my odds for the Niners pick would look like this:

    Justin Fields - 75%
    Trey Lance - 20%
    Mac Jones - 5%

That said, Kyle certainly has moles doing the necessary inside work/intel, so Lance could be higher.

    1. Allen showed you can improve your accuracy last year, however it is an outlier. It's incredibly hard to do, especially if you don't have adequate time to do it. If Lance has to come into a game for Jimmy he'll revert right back to his poor mechanics just as soon as the bullets start to fly.

    2. That's exactly my concern, Razor, and having seen Fields do it at such a high level since his senior year in HS, he's also easier for me to project at the NFL level. However, there is a chance that Lance is further along than we realize, and who knows, maybe he really is a football savant? These are things Kyle would know better than us right now.

However, I'm yet to find any evidence to justify Mac Jones, considering how much the Niners gave up in order to move up.

  3. At first I was a bit frustrated with all of the Mac Jones BS, but now I am actually enjoying watching ShanaLynch control the draft. They may end up playing this just right, and end up with Justin Fields, as well as the Patriots 1st round pick (15).

    1. Robber, trust me when I say that I see the raw talent and the gigantic upside of Trey Lance, I just don't know enough about his development over the last 15 months to put him ahead of Fields.

Would I trust Kyle's ability to polish him and get the most out of him fairly quickly? Heck yes I would. Other than the crazy long verbage, Kyle's system is very QB friendly. That's a fact!

Trey Lance just might have the highest ceiling of all of these prospects, I just haven't seen enough of him over the last 15 months. However, we know Kyle's guys have been working with him, so they would certainly know where he is at in his development.

    2. Trading all of the way up to 3 and drafting Trey Lance would be the equivalent of swinging for the fences as far as I am concerned, and I can get on board with that in a heartbeat!

The way I see it, whichever of these top 4 prospects gets drafted by Kyle, has the best chance at excelling at the NFL level, so why not swing for the fences?

  10. Honestly, I believe Fields is the 3rd preference for Shanahan of the three expected to be available. I see two guys that fit what Shanahan likes to do, and Fields. I'm genuinely bewildered by why so many fans want Fields to ne the pick so badly. Is it because they believe Fields is a great fit for Shanahan's offense? Or because they think Shanahan's preferences in QB have changed that much? Either way, I don't get it.

If Fields is the pick I'm good with it, but to me he seems the biggest projection of the three for running Shanahan's offense.

    1. I don't know. The link posted yesterday by George where Warner and Rollins discuss Lance left me unimpressed with Lance. What bugged me the most was the amount of easy throws that Lance missed.

      Delete
    2. His accuracy is an issue, that's true. Will come down to whether the team believes with coaching his mechanical issues can be fixed, and whether that will fix his inconsistencies. But the good thing with Lance is he shows mentally he is there, it is his mechanics that let him down.

If they take Fields it is a sign that Shanahan values accuracy and athleticism more than pocket skills, and/ or that pocket skills can be developed. If that is his view, I can't explain some of his previous decisions at QB, or it is a pretty big departure from his past views.

Jones is an obvious fit. For mine, bar his accuracy issues, Lance is a fit too. To me, it is out of those two.

      Delete
    3. So what are the current issues with Jimmy besides availability? Fans complain about his deep ball accuracy and that a number of times per game, the ball sails over his receivers; also some WTF interceptions. I'm unaware of any issues regarding his ability to run the plays that KS calls, although there is concern that KS is not able to open his entire playbook for Jimmy. Have we seen Jimmy improve these weakspots. It seems like most QBs are never are able to, although Josh Allen seems to have been able to overcome most of the weaknesses he had in college.

      Delete
    4. The question with Lance is not only can he improve his mechanics towards improved accuracy, but how fast can he do it? If the answer is 2-3 years; I don't think that matches up with where the team is right now.

      Delete
    5. Things for the 49ers to look for at his pro day.

I also disagree in some ways though. The question should be whether he can still be a good NFL QB while he develops.

  11. @Razor. Agree, which increases the odds that they take Jones. Just hope that the Jets want Fields, so the 49ers can take Wilson.

    3. If KS thinks Jones is the guy then so be it. I won't have a problem with it, but I fear many fans will not allow him to have some growing pains before voicing their displeasure. I hope Jones is a mentally tough individual.

      Delete
    4. So many that don't think he is in play? Who? Almost every NFL insider/ draft expert think Jones is a possibility there, and many believe the favourite. That info most likely isn't coming from the people that matter within the 49ers organisation, but there is a very good reason for the smoke, even if it is just speculation.

I mean, surely even you can accept that Jones fits what Shanahan wants to do very well. Even if you believe they should go a different guy.

      Delete
    5. IF Shanny does pick Jones the amount of scrutiny and pressure to perform will be higher than it ever needed to be. Maybe that's how Shanny wants it, but you gotta be careful cuz what you want isn't necessarily what you need. I know he'll get always have an oc job available to him in the NFL, so I'm sure that's comforting to him; but if Jones fails I don't see how his reputation ever recovers. I think he would be the poster child for fool me once shame on you. Cousins>Mahomes/Watson. Fool me twice shame on me. Jones>Fields/Lance.

      Delete
    6. Do you think Shanahan cares about that perception? I don't.

And I don't think he has completely changed the type of QBs he likes, either. Which is why I think Lance/ Jones are more likely than Fields to be the pick.

      Delete
    9. Not a perception. It would be a fact. The media would give them F's. The vultures would be overhead. Didn't need all that, but by giving up what they did; they've got no one to blame but themselves. Just makes it harder than it already is to succeed.

      Delete
    10. I know for a fact that Brooks has said no to Jones at #3 purely based on his belief the player shouldn't be picked there. Not based on anything he is hearing. And Miller has actually said he thinks Jones will be the pick, but that he wants them to take Lance or Fields instead.

Rollins is also one that says no based purely on not believing the player is worth the pick, not on anything he is hearing. Also... are these all really NFL insiders/ draft experts? Maybe I should have said mainstream guys - the ones that actually have inside sources around the league.

      Delete
    11. Kyle Shanahan is not going to take the prospect with the consensus lowest ceiling out of the top 5 prospects.

      Not gonna happen!

He's simply too good of a coach to spend that much draft capitol on a guy who was recently projected as a 2nd round prospect by many top scouts.

I keep hearing that Mac Jones makes such good decisions. Oh,
"He's such a great decision maker" ... but he's the only top prospect with a DUI, and a beer belly?

Absolutely rediculous! A bunch of phony baloney, that's what that is.

      Talk about a walking contradiction.

      Delete
    12. Again, do you honestly think Shanahan would care about getting a draft grade of F from the media? Heck, I think he would relish it.

      Delete
    13. Not sure but the point is there are plenty of reputable "experts" that think Jones is absurd at pick 3. I not saying he's gonna be a bust cuz he'll have the games best play caller; but I do not believe he will be as good as some "experts" think or as bad as some think. I see his ceiling as the 15th best passer in the league. When you give up what you did to get pick #3, the ceiling needs to be top 5. This regime if it draft Jones will be doing so because they believe he's the best fit, not the best player.

      Delete
    14. That's why I cautioned to be careful what you want. The added scrutiny and pressure is not helpful.

      Delete
    15. Shanahan would relish being ridiculed? just so he can prove to everyone how he can win with the worst QB in his division?

Yah, that makes a lot of sense, Scooter....rolling my eyes!

      Kyle's not that arrogant!

      Delete
    16. "consensus lowest ceiling".

This is true in so far as that is the broad belief. But man, I really take exception to this belief. Purely based on athletic talent. When did the ceiling for the QB position become based on athletic traits? That's what I find ridiculous.

Also... why is it that for every other position we accept that a player can improve with an NFL training regime, but for Jones we think his athleticism is what it will always be? If there is one QB in this year's draft that has the most improvement from a physical side of things, surely it is Jones. He's a decent athlete now despite clearly not spending as much time sculpting his body as some of these others. I'd imagine that with a year or two of NFL weights and training programs he will be able to improve considerably.

      Delete
    17. It's hard enough to win in the NFL, even when you aren't being publicly ridiculed after spending 3 firsts and a 3rd on the consensus 5th best prospect.

We all know the odds are already against us, so why add the ridicule? Does Kyle want to be a laughing stock?

      Delete
    18. 49reasons, what in Shanahan's history makes you think he isn't arrogant?

Yeah, I think he would love nothing more than to show everyone they were wrong.

      Delete
    19. As long as that desire to prove people wrong doesn't cost us the next Mahomes, or Watson like it did with Cousins, ok, sure I have no problem with that, Scooter.

      Delete
    20. @Scooter:

Agree with your comment regarding the NFL training program. How many times have I heard that when a college prospect gets into a NFL training program his physique and strength will improve, yet somehow these same people believe it can't happen for Mac Jones. It's a lame argument, imo. Hate on Mac for other reasons but surely an NFL program will improve his fitness.

      Delete
    21. Kyle? Oh he's arrogant, just not THAT arrogant. At least I, along with most Faithful, hope he isn't THAT arrogant! Then again, of he picks Mac Jones maybe he deserves the anger and ridicule!

      Talk about moving sideways.

A lateral move and, oh, BTW, why would anyone think Mac Jones, the proverbial statue with a beer gut, stands a great chance of even staying healthy? Isn't that part of the reason for moving up this far in the first place?

    26. If we're talking "inside" sources then why are we talking? This regime doesn't leak. Simms admitted that he purposefully "forgot" to talk about Aiyuk. All those "sources" are speculating just like the "experts". Nobody but 4 or 5 people know who the pick will be, and their lips are sealed.

      Delete
    27. "What is Mac Jones' excuse for his body type given the facilities at Alabama?"

Education. Jones not only completed his degree, he also completed his Masters. With a 4.0 GPA. Student athletes don't have the same amount of time as NFL athletes to focus solely on football and their body. Jones won't need to spend time studying anything other than football once he gets in the NFL.

      Delete
    28. "If we're talking "inside" sources then why are we talking?"

Because there are sources other than the guys in charge. NFL insiders know people throughout the league. And those people know more than guys on the internet giving scouting reports and opinions on players.

      Delete
    29. Jones was a backup. He had plenty of time to work on his body.

      Delete
    30. They know people throughout the league but they don't have any idea who the 49ers are drafting. No one does but, Shanny, Lynch, Big Shanny, Peters and maybe York. That's it.

      Delete
    31. The facilities at Alabama I'm sure were great. But how many times have we heard from rookies about how they had to change their eating habits. It's probably more about that than it is weight training facilities.

      Delete
    32. Yes, those are the only ones that know for sure. But scouts talk during the season. They know which guys the team was most interested in. They know the traits Shanahan has them looking for. The Jones to 49ers talk isn't completely dark arts. It is based on people putting things together.

And remember this - when the trade was first made it was immediately and vehemently believed by most of the main NFL insiders it was for Jones. That isn't coming from nowhere. He may not be the guy they take, but I find it very hard to believe the 49ers aren't interested/ don't like him.

      Delete
    33. All we know is he made time for beer. Priorities. Beer or weight room? Hmmm...

      Delete
    34. I think what we are glossing over is the fact that Jones' accuracy goes to pot if his feet aren't set, and he does not possess the arm strength to drive the ball to the sideline without getting to step into the throw. That's why I think he's a poor fit in this offense, and a better fit in Atlanta, Miami, or New England.

      Delete
  12. Razor he started sooner l than Wentz and Wentz isnt a bad QB.
They worked on it and shortened his release and improved his footwork.
I still say there isnt much difference in floor and especially with Lance he has a huge chip on his shoulder and will be the best of the 3.

    1. That's the part I don't get. If they draft Jones it's because they believe he's an elite processor and distributor of the ball. I don't think he is on Brees' level, and I have my doubts he'll get there even under Shanny. I'd love to not have to be proven wrong, but if I must, I must. Make me a believer, Shanny.

    2. If I was throwing to those BAMA WR's & RB's, from behind that offensive line, I'd make a lot of plays look easy as well.

And worst of all, it ends up that Mac Jones through the shortest passes and had fewest yards actually through the air per attempt.

I'm telling you guys, MAC JONES is AJ MCCARRON .... only without the multi-year accolades and experience.

      Delete
    3. There are really potentially 4 Blue Chip QB's in this class, right?

      Lawrence is the "Chosen One"

      Fields is the "Prodigy"

And there is serious thought that Lance might also be "A Prodigy", with huge, gigantic upside!

Those two guys have been neck and neck since high school, while Lance is still sort of the unknown. Right?

Wilson had a crazy good year, after a sub-par first year and a half, so he's "Johnny Come Lately"

And Mac Jones is "Johnny come EVERY DRAFT" because he's exactly that .... the big Goofy Kid who looks out of shape, and takes bigger risks with his passes because his guys make plays the plays. They are THAT good!

Did you watch Mac Jones run at his pro day, lol. Go watch, he looks like a slow version of Daniel Jones. Remember when Jones had an 80 yard run to the house, that he faceplanted? Lol.

      Delete
    4. I am really not trying to dump on the kid. Mac Jones might very well be a good kid. I don't know. But a DUI while carrying a fake ID? Say what? That doesn't make Mac a bad kid, but what about bad judgement? And can you imagine of Fields or Lance had that on their record? Would we not be able to stop talking about it.

      Delete
    5. I figured it out. Mac Jones is a of combo clone of DANIEL JONES and AJ MCCARRON, if they were brothers, only without their two best traits.

    6. Again, Justin Fields in the semi-final this year .... an EPIC Justin Fields clinic, with broken ribs and a hip pointer!

I have to keep pointing to this QB's peak performance, right when he needed it the most. His performance in that game is already becoming legendary! That was only a few months ago, BTW!

So Fields was outrageously good VS Clemson, against their stout defense, an all-time gutsy performance in the semi's, but was fairly seriously hurt coming into the final VS Alabama, and the Buckeyes were simply overmatched by Smith and Harris.

Hard pass on Mac Jones, especially after giving up the farm.

You can't take the conservative pocket passe, game manager, Kirk Cousins' route in 2021, unless he's Tom Brady, and Mac is no Brady!

Anyhow, I honestly can't stomach that choice, and I personally know my share of Niner fans who feel the same way I do. In fact it's the consensus. That's simply the way it is, likely because for us, Mac Jones hasn't suddenly gone from high second, maybe very back end of round 1, to trade up 3 1st and a 3rd for the kid.

I mean ..... REALLY? Mac Jones after all of that?
