To Whom Much Is Givens, Much May Be Required

After working his way up the hierarchy of the defensive line as an UDFA out of Penn St. in 2019, Kevin Givens earned 13 games worth of playing time last year. Apparently that didn't mean much because on the night of February 21, Kevin Givens allegedly attacked, Haydon Bosley and has been charged with 2nd degree assault. The incident occurred after calling for an Uber ride where, Givens became angry, refused to ride along with, Boseley, a friend and, Kevin's girlfriend back to the motel room. Given's showed up later to find the 3 in the hotel hallway and attacked, Boseley. He roughed him up before, Boseley was able to get away and seek hospital treatment for a dislocated shoulder, black eye, bruises and cuts. Kevin Givens is now looking at 10 years in prison if convicted.

  2. Man! Hope he gets his anger under control. This guy had potential and performed well as a rotational piece.

Although, have to say that the Zach Kerr signing looks very perspicacious now.

    1. Zach Kerr plays nose, not tackle.

    2. Well based on how the 9ers sign and draft players on the defensive line, the positions they play will evolve, won't it?

I mean on passing downs, on the nickel defense, the DT and Nose positions are interchangeable, aren't they? We are looking at a combination of Armstead, DJ Jones, Kinlaw, Given earlier, which might now become Armstead, DJ Jones, Kinlaw, Kerr instead.

Assuming Bosa/Ebukam (or Ford if he is suited) on the edge.

  3. The story sounds ridiculous unless Givens is a lunatic, so I'll wait to see what a smart lawyer can do for him.

  4. We have seen these blowups before, e.g., with Bruce Miller.

IMO, it's only a matter of time until these bouts of uncontrolled and inexplicable rage is connected to some form of brain trauma from the brain rattling around in the cranium during doling our or receiving hits in play. I believe it's established that small negative changes to the brain accumulate from repeated hits on the head that do not show short term signs like concussion. Outward behavior may depend on which part of the brain is affected.

    1. You first need to recognize you've got a problem, and then proactively seek out help before you end up in a situation like, Givens finds himself. These players have access to all kinds of assistance that the regular, Joe doesn't.

    2. Absolutely agreed, personal accountability is everything.

    3. Razor,
Our understanding of the brain and its workings doubles every 15 years. The scientific process works slowly and surely. The only "proactively seek out help" as you state it maybe is for him to leave football altogether. But it is his livelihood and perhaps an impossible decision. He will probably end up in prison for a few years and Niners and NFL will move on to the next DT available. We fans will explain away a potential medical condition away as "personal accountability". Right now we don't know for sure, but all research is pointing to repeated head trauma as the source of behavioral changes.

    4. Mood, I get what you're saying but you can recognize you have anger issues, and address it through every avenue possible short of retirement.
