General/Open Discussion Thursday

The 49ers signed their prized F/A, Trent Williams, locked up a couple cb's in, Moseley and Verrett. Ordered some, Juice, a Big Mack and brought back a NT in, Jones. Not to mention adding an ascending pass rusher named after the biblical legend, Samson. The 49ers were able to fill in several holes, but they still have some to fill. Slot WR and NB. They also have a hole at PR/KR which they may be looking to fill through the draft, as well as backup QB.

Notable: The #49ers already have interviewed Stanford WR Connor Wedington, one of the top return men in the draft. Teams can have as many as five Zoom interviews with one prospect.

    1. Thanks, George. I think everyone is grateful we have a place free of the BS to continue to exchange ideas and thoughts with those we've developed a relationship with throughout the years. You were the spearhead behind it, and Mood pointed me in the right direction. Thanks to contributors like, Scooter and MWD we have something special. Thank you, and thanks to all the faithful 49ers brothers and sisters out there!

  3. I was really beginning to feel that T Williams was going to walk, I for one am happy with the signing. I really like that Mack signing and its understood that his best years are behind them. With that being said he still is better then what the Niners have had since Jeremy Newbury. The Niners still need to add to the WR corps, the DB's, and as Scooter noted, Edge. The NFC West is loaded with fire power which means the defense will be tested time and again. I once again see the draft still going towards the defensive side of the ball.

  4. At this point in free agency, after all the F/A's the 9ers have signed, my question is do the 9ers have enough salary cap left to sign a free agent back up QB, a NCB, or a slot receiver and still have enough to sign draft picks? Or only
enough to sign their draft picks?
The last I've found is $20.5 Mil., that includes the contracts of Moseley, Verrett, Ebukam, and Juszczyk, but before before restructuring D. Ford.
Restructuring D. Ford's contract should have increased the 9ers salary cap to $29 to $29 Mil?
If anyone knows the right $$ amount, please post it!

    1. IIRC, they have about $13M of cap money left, probably $5-$6M of which will go for signing rookies. They may bring back Hyder or K'Waun, and a bargain bin CB and/or receiver. May have restructure some contracts in summer to free up money for a Warner extension.

    2. Geep, the 49ers have around $12 million left in their cap bank after all the moves they made.

      Thanks guys

      * K'Waun is the one I'd like to see get signed.
      * Anyone see them restructuring JG's contract?

    4. GEEP, re JG, yes absolutely. I would be very surprised if JG is playing for the 49ers under his current contract this season.

    5. I think they like Jimmy's contract where it is now with the ability to move on from him every year. If they restructure, I'd guess it will be sometime in summer to accommodate rookie contracts and a Warner extension.

  5. Jets haven't exactly rushing to sign Niner FAs. I am not surprised. Joe Douglas is going to look for value signings after signing 2 relatively high priced FAs so far in Davis and Lawson.

    1. Yeah, I was wondering about that yesterday. What's your opinion on bringing Minshew in as backup or competition to start.

      Delete
    2. Cubus,

I am quite uncertain about Niners' plans for backup. On one had, Lynch made it clear that they want to upgrade the backup situation. OTOH, most of the vets with experience are now gone except for Alex Smith and Joe Flacco -- one or both of who may retire. Is Minshew worth a draft pick to Kyle? I am not sure. Maybe Niners will draft a QB on second day for a backup upgrade.

      Delete
    3. Mood:

But will a rookie QB be an upgrade? Sure they might be more talented, mobile, etc., but they won't have the knowledge of a complex playbook that Beathard and Mullens had. Further they won't have direct NFL experience. I'm certainly not arguing to keep either Mullens or Beathard, but the way Lynch described it, I thought he would be trying to get an experienced backup already in the NFL. While that person probably won't be familar with KS' system, the odds are higher that he could come in if needed, especially if JG gets hurt early in the season like last year. A first round QB might be a different story. Further, the team does have Rosen, but I forget who wrote a recent article on Rosen, but the gist was to not expect anything different from him than what we've clearly seen.

Minshew has experience and is young and I think might be worth taking a flyer on. Also apparently Kyle really liked him when he coached him in the Senior Bowl (unfortunately, I can't find the link to the article).

      Delete
    4. No argument here. Kyle's offense cannot have a rookie effective backup QB. It might be that Beathard or Hoyer returns on a one-year deal to compete with Rosen for the backup role. Will Niners want to part with a fifth round pick for Minshew? Not sure.

      Delete
    5. I don't agree with this. Kyle can have a rookie as the backup QB. Especially given they have typically kept 3 QBs on the roster - the vet can be the 2nd or 3rd guy, depending on how quickly the rookie gets up to speed.

Imo any vet they bring in will be competing with Rosen for the vet backup role.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is Mac
Jones graduated with BA and a 4.0 grade average in 3 years, plus a Masters degree in Dec 2020. Note: His Freshman year was 2017.....
If true, I'd say he has an IQ capable of learning Shanahan's system in less than a year?

      Delete
    7. Yes, that is correct on Jones. He is highly intelligent, and his ability to master an offense was on full display this past season.

      Delete
    8. I will be very surprised if the Niners consider a rookie as an upgrade to their backup QB situation. Niners are not where they were in 2017. It is quite a stretch to think that a rookie is going to run Kyle's offense effectively in case Jimmy G misses a couple of games in the middle of the season. Next season is an important season when Niners will contend for Super Bowl -- and they will not want to depend on a rookie QB in a pinch.

      Delete
    9. They'll most likely keep 3 QBs again in 2021.

As for it being a stretch a rookie could run the offense effectively for a couple of games... it wouldn't be his full playbook, but Shanahan can absolutely get a rookie to run an offense effectively for a few games. So long as that rookie has talent. People make too much of Shanahan's offense being so complex. Yes, it takes time to master all of it. But Shanahan is smart enough not to put all of it on a rookie's plate if he needed to play.

    2. They don't appear to be pursuing a backup vet QB with great urgency. Lost out on a number of guys already, if reports are to be believed. Trubisky being the latest - would have seemed like a good fit, both for the 49ers and him, but he's decided to go backup a rising star that doesn't miss games instead. If that was Trubisky's preference I can't imagine they are offering much to entice these guys to come.

It's kind of strange that he didn't appear to separate that well, but at 6-4 I guess it doesn't matter as much.

    3. I agree with a lot of what is said in this article.

On his contract, I find it hard to believe he plays for the 49ers under his current contract terms this season. I've been thinking either a restructure to push cap hit to next year, or playing for another team, depending on what they do in FA and the draft.

But this article raises an interesting alternative - the 49ers may be holding off doing anything right now to (a) gauge the QB contract market to see what JG may be "worth" in the current environment and (b) wait for other teams cap space to shrink. In doing so they can place more pressure on JG to accept a pay cut, as he would be harder to trade on his current contract and even if released he would struggle to get close to what he is currently on.

  12. Been busy with work, so haven't been able to find time to drop in and comment. With all the signings the Niners have made, what I would love to see right now:

    1. Re-sign Hyder. Add that other DE body.
    2. See if JuJu Smith-Schuster wants to go cheap on a one-year deal? Doubt he would, or if we even have enough if we sign Hyder. If not, Tim Patrick or T.Y. Hilton for the slot position.

    Draft:

Round 1: Trade back from 12 for 19 and 51 from Redskins (they can draft Mac Jones). Take at 19 Kwity Paye if we don't re-sign Hyder. If we do, then Rousseau or Jaelen Phillips (I think Ojulari has risen to Top 15 with his Pro Day).

Round 2: Elijah Molden, Pittsburgh Nickelback and Wyatt Davis, Ohio State Guard.

Round 3: Davis Mills, Stanford QB.

Round 4: Demetric Felton, UCLA RB.

Round 5: Tariq Thompson, San Diego State TE

Round 5: Alim McNeill, Pittsburgh NT/DT

Round 5: Royce Newman, Mississippi OT

Round 6: Tre' McKitty, Georgia TE

Round 7: Connor Wedington, Stanford WR

If work loosens up soon, I'll try and give some analysis.

    Round 6:

    1. "(I was) looking for a team that was competitive, and obviously there's a connection with Kyle Shanahan and the offense he runs," Mack said. "It's a system that I know I do well in – that outside zone scheme. It's just something that my body type – how I can move, the blocks I've done before – it's something I'm comfortable with. I know it. I'm good at it. I'm confident in it. And I know I can do it well."

  17. Davis Mills could be one of those QBs that are under the radar and then blossoms in the NFL.

He likely moved up on draft charts today after completing some nice passes and doing well in the 40YD.
I’m still pulling for Mac Jones, but drafting Mills on day two would be a good get.

    1. Rather have Mills in the 2nd(eventually with a slight trade up) than Jones in the first cuz he is a natural thrower and his athleticism was better than expected.
