49ers Sign Wilson

The #49ers have agreed to terms with #Colts FA defensive back Tavon Wilson on a 1-year deal, source said. He spent the earlier portion of his career with the #Lions and #Patriots.

Cheaper competition for, Moore than, Tartt while the young DB continues to develop.

**Curveball Alert**

Safety Jaquiski Tartt is returning to the 49ers on a 1 year deal, per sources. In addition to Trent Williams (acquired in 2020), San Francisco is bringing back several of their top free agents, looking to get back to where team was in 2019.

  1. Help on ST, too. He was a second round pick of the Pats in 2012 and initially played nickel but was found to be more of a box safety.

    1. He graded out as the #26th best safety in the league in 2019, per Pff.

  2. Interesting. I had assumed they would re-sign Tartt, but this makes me think they will move on and let Wilson compete with Moore and Harris for the spot opposite Ward.

    1. Probably a draft pick in that mix too.

    2. Yep, it's a twofer. Tartt's looking for starter money. This way, Moore still gets that vet competition and the 49ers save cap money at the same time.

    3. Lol! I thought they would re-sign Tartt, but double dip? Mustn't think much of Harris/ Moore.

    4. Ward, Moore, Harris, Tartt, Wilson. Someone isn't making the roster that's for sure.

It'll be interesting to see how they view this safety class and if they decide to take one on day 3. I'd lean towards the UDFA route, but who knows?

    5. Also makes me wonder if there is a thought Moore could move to CB, either outside or inside. From memory, they had him training in the slot a little last season.

    6. Weren't they using him as part of a dime package?

    7. I believe so, but can't recall if he was getting used more as a safety/ deeper lying DB or slot type CB closer to the LOS. I think it was more as a deeper lying DB.

  3. I guess that in the end they didn't think much of Johnathan Cyprian.

  4. Kyle Posey (NN) on Tartt after the announcement:

Tartt’s injury history is impossible to ignore. The 2015 second-round pick has missed 36 out of a potential 64 games during the past four seasons. There is a reason the 49ers gave Tartt another shot. When he’s on the field, the defense is excellent. There aren’t mental lapses in coverage. You don’t see a safety flying up out of control to fill the alley, only to miss a tackle.

Not only does the defense limit the explosive plays, but Tartt does as well. This may come off as a hot take, but San Francisco had the best secondary in the NFL during their 2019 Super Bowl run, and their safety play was a huge reason why. Tartt allowed two yards per target. Seriously.

I understand the frustrations about the lack of turnovers both safeties fail to create, but sustaining drives on offense without generating explosive plays is tough to do at the NFL level, which is why the Niners had so much success under Robert Saleh. We saw the secondary fall apart in December of ‘19 once Tartt went down with an injury.

Let’s hope he stays healthy in 2021. If not, Tarvarius Moore gained valuable experience this past season. Even with Tartt and Ward on the field, it wouldn’t be surprising to see more “dime” packages with three safeties next season.

    1. I think the idea will be that if Tartt gets hurt again, Tavon Wilson would fill in. The mental lapses Posey refers to from the younger guys I am sure is part of the reason they signed Wilson.

  5. I'm surprised the 9ers have shown no interest in resigning
a top FA NCB, K'Waun Williams, to a 2021 contract. $4 Mil. for a 1 year contract is apparently more then the 9ers want to spend? He visits KC tomorrow and they may sign him?

    1. Have they shown no interest? My understanding is the 49ers, Jets and Chiefs are the three teams currently believed to be interested in signing him.

    2. Scooter" "Have they shown no interest?"
If the 9ers have, it may be too little too late if he
      signs with KC?

    3. My read (reading between the lines) is the 49ers have made Williams an offer, but it is less than he hoped for. He is now exploring his options, but 49ers still in the mix.

  6. Details of Ford's restructure coming out. Looks like the team is saving around $11M against the cap this year.

  7. Wonder if they sign the rookies and extend Warner without restructuring Jimmy G and thus retain flexibility. They can still extend Tomlinson and restructure that deal if they so desire.

    1. Yea, so far they've been hesitant to restructure, Jimmy. This is a prove it year for him. I think, Tomlinson certainly could be an option, given they've already restructured him once before.

    2. They certainly seem to be moving that direction. I think they only restructure JG if they absolutely have to at this stage.

    3. I still don't fully understand the logic behind it.
Getting his cap number down helps the team and makes him more tradable at the same time.
The only benefit of the current salary structure is the ability to cut him and save all but about 3 Million. To me this means they really don't trust him to stay healthy. If he played at his current level, staying healthy for a full season and his cap number was 20M... SF could get a first for that.

Even if SF had to take on dead cap for an additional 5M for a few seasons, the rookie wage scale is such that the first would be worth it.

  8. One of my favourite draft prospects had himself a day at his pro day - Tyree Gillespie. Thought he might be a round 3/4 steal. Unlikely now. Not that it really matters now the 49ers have locked up Tartt and Wilson!

    1. Niners defensive draft philosophy has been to invest in high-ceiling D liemeen. On DBs, they load up on mid to lower round picks, and acquire/retain competent (generally not Pro Bowl level) to journeymen vets.

However, 2020-21 was the first year when their talent level reached a critical threshold where they can't re-sign everyone becoming a FA and have to let competent starters walk.

I wonder if they will now tweak their draft philosophy to include early round CB who can be a difference maker by taking away half the field. Not sure.

    2. Yep. I was thinking Gillespie might be a day 3 target if he lasts that long. I now doubt he makes it past day 2, and also doubt safety is that high a priority.

  9. Woah, reports are that the premise behind Ford's restructure is that he will return to play. That's huge for a few reasons. First, getting Ford back playing would be a big plus for the D. Second, he has agreed to reduce his income considerably to stay, which if he then can stay healthy is a big win for the 49ers. Third... it suggests he may have been fit enough to pass a physical... so the team has bypassed the opportunity to get his contract off the books in favour of keeping him, which lends further credence to the idea they think he can recover.
