Amidst the big ticket signings through the early parts of this FA period, the 49ers
made a low key addition with the signing of former Cardinals WR and
STs ace Trent Sherfield. Sherfield, who played four years at Vanderbilt, was an
UDFA of the Cardinals in 2018. Arizona opted not to tender him as a restricted
FA this offseason, potentially hoping they could sign him for less than the RFA
tender price. The 49ers had other plans, signing him for the vet minimum but
guaranteeing $200K of this salary.
Sherfield was a dual threat QB and DB in high school and was
originally recruited to play DB for Vanderbilt. However, he quickly switched
sides and saw action as a freshman at WR. Through four years in college he
accumulated 136 catches for 1,869 yards and 9 TDs, while also adding 284
rushing yards on 22 carries and 2 TDs. Sherfield was a deep threat WR for the
Commodores while also offering toughness and reliable hands in traffic and a
number of explosive plays on reverses.
After his Senior season, Sherfield (who is currently listed at
6’1’’and 219 lbs) caught the attention of scouts at the Vanderbilt pro day
turning in a 40 time in the mid 4.4s, as well as a 125” broad jump and 6.9s
3-cone.
With the Cardinals, Sherfield saw limited action on offense,
with his snap count declining each year (36.4% in 2018, 24.5% in 2019, 7.0% in
2020), but was a core STs player. He finished his time with
the Cardinals having recorded 28 catches on 48 targets for 340 yards and 1 TD.
Sherfield will no doubt continue to be a core STs player
with the 49ers. However, the 49ers are also expected to provide Sherfield with
an opportunity to increase his role on offense, per Mike Garafalo: "Sherfield
excels on special teams but the Niners like his skill-set at receiver and he’ll
have a chance to grab a role there. Especially with Kendrick Bourne gone."
As a WR, Sherfield offers an interesting skill set for the
49ers. He provides a nice size/ speed combination that can be used to threaten
teams deep while also offering a viable target over the middle of the field. He
has also proven at Vanderbilt that he can be used in the running game, which is
something that Bourne didn’t offer. However, he is still quite raw as a route
runner which held him back with the Cardinals, and he does not provide quite
the same savvy as Bourne in this regard.
Good write up, Scooter. Sherfield seems like a poor man's, Cordarrelle Patterson.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about that. Patterson is an exceptional return man. Sherfield contributes on STs as a coverage guy/ gunner. We'll have to wait and see whether Sherfield contributes much as a WR.

ReplyDeleteYour right, Trent Sherfield will earn his bones on ST. He also has the ability to contribute as a WR. Some highlights from his time as an Arizona Cardinal.

ShanaLynch deserves credit for the job they've done in free agency. Resigning TW was a big win, as well as fullback Kyle Juszczyk, CB's Jason Verrett, Dontae Johnson and Emmanuel Moseley, EDGE Samson Ebukam and center Alex Mack filled needs. But there is still more that needs to be done.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest need is a back up QB and resigning NB K'Waun Williams, or his replacement, as well as 2 or 3 more CB's.
With 9 draft picks in the 2021 draft, this shouldn't be a problem. Add another EDGE rusher, 1 or 2 more IOL, a WR and
a Safety! Throw in an injury free season and we're ready for another SB run.
Agreed, GEEP. There are still a number of remaining holes.
DeleteI will be writing about where the 49ers currently stand in the next couple of days. Who knows, by then maybe some of those holes will have been filled!
Scooter
Delete"I will be writing about where the 49ers currently stand in the next couple of days." Good to hear Scooter, looking forward to reading it. And yes, maybe
some of those holes will have been filled, but that takes away the trill of the draft..lol
Scooter, thanks for writing this. I was hoping you would. Looking forward to seeing what he can do for us. As you wrote, "He provides a nice size/speed combination that can be used to threaten teams deep while also offering a viable target over the middle of the field. He has also proven at Vanderbilt that he can be used in the running game." He seems like a player Shanahan could use in a myriad of ways, including subbing for Deebo.
ReplyDeleteKevin White seemed like a player, Shanny could use in a myriad of ways too.
DeleteMy pleasure George. I hope Sherfield develops into a decent WR option, but my expectation is he will continue to primarily be a STs guy.
DeleteSpecial teams needs to be special, good signing. See how he works out as a WR.
ReplyDeleteRazor, there's video of Sherfield succeeding as an NFL pass catcher. For White there isn't. I looked. That's amazing and I didn't expect that. Then I watched a video of his first three years in the League, which was a story of broken bones and the Bears finally giving up on that. He just fell out of their plans. We don't have that with Sherfield, which is why I'm optimistic. Have I ever been wrong before? Ask my wife.
ReplyDeleteI'm expecting him to be what, Mostert was as a gunner. Anything more will be a bonus.
DeleteI'd be more than happy if all he ends up being is a good gunner/ STs coverage guy and #5 WR that can play the occasional snap if needed and not flat out stink. Which is what he provided for the Cards, so I don't see why he shouldn't be capable of that with the 49ers.
DeleteAs you say razor, anything more is a bonus. I'm certainly not ruling it out, but not expecting it.
Nice piece as usual, Scooter.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Shoup, Sherfield will earn his pay on STs but will see some action as a WR during the season.
At 6’1” and around 220 lbs, Sherfield seems to fit the Shanahan profile for WRs.
I’m hopeful that Jaylen Hurd can get on the field this season. I don’t know if the team has made an announcement regarding his physical progress, but I believe that they will as the season draws closer.
Anything we get from, Hurd will be another bonus.
DeleteAye, not wrong there razor. Would love it if he can finally stay healthy and ball out. But that's found money if it happens, not something you can expect or rely on.
DeleteI think one of the things to note with Sherfield and Ebukam is that they are both special teams players. This should allow SF to not need a special teams "ace" like they have in the past. Hopefully this will also lead to improved coverage.
Delete*In terms of Hurd, I am in agreement with both Razor and Scooter. I don't expect much and will be pleasantly surprised with anything SF gets out of him.
DeleteI am actually pretty open minded with players recovering from most injuries with the exception of spinal injuries. Those I stay away from completely. Knees (acl/mcl) I believe need 2 full years to see complete recovery so I am ok with them as well... but if a player has anything wrong in terms of the spine I am out on. I think they are terrible investments.
