The 2nd Most Important Position by Razor

The backup quarterback. We got a real good look in 2020 just how wise, Joe Gibbs was when he was quoted with that remark. Jimmy's inability to be available in these quarterback friendly times we play in means we need an upgrade. Now, some will argue that it should be a vet, a rookie draft pick or some kid off the street. Let's hear your arguments...or not. This will be an open forum for all things 49ers. NO POLITICS or you will be jettisoned without warning. Let's all enjoy our passion for the team together and discuss. Thank you.

  1. My preference is to add a rookie high in the draft, and let them compete with Rosen for the backup spot.

    1. Welcome aboard, Scooter. I agree your plan is the sensible way to go. Not buying into the hype surrounding the, Rosen experiment. Odds are he ends up on the practice squad. That leaves, Johnson, a rookie and if, Rich gets his way maybe, Mullens. Yikes!

    2. I suspect that in a normal year Kyle would prefer a vet as a backup considering how the Mullens experiment fared. But faced with the cap situation, a second or third day draft pick is more likely.

    3. Rosen and a mid round draft pick or two. My choice would be Ian Book.

    4. Mills would be a value pick in the fourth. He will need some seasoning because he has not played a whole lot in college.

    5. I have, Mills over Jones because I believe he has more tools in his tools chest.

    6. Brugler has Jones and Mills at #5 and #6 respectively in his latest ratings on The A, I have been hoping since October that Mills flies under the radar and Kyle snaps him in the fourth or fifth round. No such luck it seems. That kid's ball placement is outstanding. I also get the impression that he can make pretty much all the NFL throws. Has serviceable mobility.

    7. I'm hearing Fields is dropping down draft boards due to slow processing and too many one read throws. I wouldn't be surprised if he fell like, Rodgers did.

  2. OC, what position and who is your preferred choice in the first round? I think you have said OL previously...? Any particular player?

I really like the look of Slater.

    1. Scooter, is it predominantly his versatility that has you liking him over Darrisaw?

    2. Scooter,
It all depends on whether the 9ers resign Williams or sign another quality FA OT. If they don't we have to draft an OT. I think we can trade back from 12 pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd and draft Darrisaw. If we sign a FA OT then trade back for a edge rusher and pick up an extra 2nd where we can draft a CB and IOL.

    3. Razor, for me the versatility is part of it, but it is more to do with his fit for this offense. And I think he is just better.

His mobility is elite for an OL. Plus he has very good technique and does a great job resetting himself. Looks a perfect fit for ZBS.

    4. Scooter, if you take, Slater that high I think you want him at LT. Williams would no longer be needed. Seems like, Slater might be who they envisioned, McKivitz to develop into. Dunno, but as a pure og prospect who I think can start day 1 in round 3, Aaron Banks outta Notre Dame is a player I like but probably not someone, Shanny would normally gravitate towards. Do you think he has the movement skill to play in this offense?

    5. Razor, I like Banks, but not necessarily for this offense. I don't see him excelling on the move.

ND is a little unheralded in this draft as a mine for quality NFL prospects. They have a lot of good looking players. Tremble for mine is the guy I really want, but plenty of guys that would look just fine in red and gold.

    6. Scooter, ND is quietly becoming what Ohio St. is to the defensive line at the offensive line position thanks to Hiestand's foundation.

  3. Hello, gentlemen. This has been sorely needed.

  4. I like Slater a lot. but some draft links feel that either Lance of Fields can be in striking distance for the 49ers to make a deal for. In my opinion. if Fields is the fourth QB off the board he will take that as a slap in the face and always play with a chip on his shoulders to prove the pundits wrong.
That's the type of edge I would like in our QB.

    1. If one of the top QBs falls to 12, and Kyle likes them, it would be hard to pass such an opportunity up when they appear to not be fully sold on JG. Don't know when you'll get another opportunity.

    2. Scooter, what are your thoughts on the relationship between, Shanny and, Jimmy? Do they need to work on their synergy together as, Steve Young has suggested or is it closer to a contemptuous relationship where, Shanny wanted, Cousins; never really wanted, Jimmy and is too enamored with his system. He passed on, Mahomes, and Watson. When, Jimmy won those games to close out his first year with us, he did it out of structure from the offense, and, Shanny showed reluctant exuberance at the post game pressers. I'm just wondering if his ego might be a detriment to this team moving forward.

    3. AES, I just did a mock with, Slater and Lance staring at me with the #12 pick. Which one do you think I chose? Hint, rhymes with pants.

    4. Razor, I don't think it is in any way contemptuous, nor one where they need to work on their synergy. I think Shanny now has a pretty good handle on what JG can do and is fine with adjusting hos offense to suit. But I also believe Shanny feels JG has some limitations that ultimately mean he isn't the exact type of QB Shanahan would ideally have.

    5. Scooter, the way you put it reminds me of a shotgun marriage where they get hitched and stick it out for the kids.😎

    6. More a case of not wanting to move on until he finds something better 😉

  5. At this point,
I think they are in a position where they need to run it back with Jimmy. It's not my preferred option but I think they are stuck with it. To this end they need to try and renegotiate/extend his contract, give him more guaranteed money but shrink his regular salary and give him the incentives that will allow him to earn that money back if he plays well.

Once done, you can bring in your rookie, Rosen cannot be seen as a real option as a potential starter. He must be seen for what he is at this point a practice squad/backup type player with upside.

    1. Thanks. Do I need to sign in with my google account to use an avatar? I did sign in, but didn't see a way to post with my screen name and to use an avatar. Not sure if I need to do that separately with google.

    2. Cubus, I adjusted the settings so you do not have to have a google account. I don't know if I can help you out with an avatar. I loaded mine in my profile. If you would like to post a topic at anytime, email me. This is obviously a work in progress atm. Thank you for your patience.

  8. I would prefer Jones over Trey Lance (I think Lance is at least a 2 year commitment on the bench).

I am not a fan of Trask, and actually prefer Mills over him.

The QBs get bad fast in this draft.

    1. Yea, I'd prefer, Mills over, Jones but I'm probably in the minority there. The reason is I don't think, Jones provides the kind of value I'm looking for as highly as he's been projected, late 1st, early 2nd.

  9. On some teams I totally agree with that statement but with other teams nah the LT/edge rusher would be more important. Reason being - teams that are talented and expected to push into the playoffs would want a really good backup. Teams that are trying to get better eh not so much they are not going anywhere even if there starter stayed healthy all year. Nothing wrong with a really good backup.

With that being said, I do believe the Niners are opening with JG, I think it would be wise to keep CJ for at least one more year. He knows the system. Rosen or a draftee or a FA can be developed. I will say if Watson becomes available, which I doubt, snag him at all cost, not one player on the Niners would be safe. It might cost the Niners the 2021 season but after that look out...Shanny and Watson it would be almost unfair and I would love it.

Congrats to Razor leading the way to new horizons.

    1. Hey, there you are, Dave. Glad to have you aboard!

I hope, Rich doesn't talk, Shanny into bringing back, Mullens. Maybe he can find another udfa to groom like he did with, Mullens only slightly more talented. Dustin Crum?

    2. I too have had enough of Mullens and not to fond of CJ either.

  11. A vet who has started, is over 30, but really has no true shot at being a franchise QB anymore, so a Dalton or a Fitz would fit that mold (hell even Alex but his cap numbers don't make him an easy cut for Wash, and he actually has more chance at being a starter than either those two). You want a guy who has won as a starter, and when he comes in for a 4 or 6 game stretch he's going to win more than 1-5, you want a guy who will stay above .500 and may even surprise a win against the other top 4 teams in the NFC. He's not a guy who can guarantee .700 win percent or better (Jimmy does that) but he can, on a team this talented, keep you in the playoff race until Jimmy comes back. But as we all know, Jimmy only gets injured in even years, so 2021 will be a healthy season.

You also draft a rookie in the 3rd. Ian Book is my guy as well, he gives me Russell Wilson vibes; undersized (just at 6'), very mobile, very improvisational, moves very well in the pocket, wins, has great field vision, doesn't turn the ball over. The only thing he is lacking is that elite arm and 6'4, 230lb body. Get him in the 3rd. He sits, he learns, he becomes the backup one day and may, just may, surprise and be a franchise QB, but if he isn't he's good enough to be your Steve Bono for 6 seasons (no Montana/Young in this scenario).

    1. A Fitz (he had no problem getting the win against us) or a Dalton as a backstop QB makes sense to me too. But can we afford either?
