Lost In Translation

“We have to in“We have to insulate ourselves better,” Lynch said. “We got to have better options if he’s not there.JJohn Lynch, "Being available is a big part of this thing. So we — probably as a stated goal — we have to insulate ourselves better. We’ve got to have better options if he’s not there."

Translation: Beathard and Mullens will not be back, and Josh Rosen and Josh Johnson are seen as 3rd options. We're going into the season with Jimmy as the starter but we're also drafting one who we hope will be the future.

John Lynch, "We are seriously looking forward to kind of rebooting our team and making a run at this thing next year. And I believe we’ve got what it takes to compete for a championship.”

Translation: We'll be competitive this year but the plan is to set ourselves up for a run next year.

Is this the right approach or do you have a better plan to get the 49ers back to the Super Bowl?

  1. The first comment clearly shows they will be adding a QB to the room that won't be Mullens or Beathard. And the idea is that QB would be a competent starter if called upon. It will be interesting to see if they see that as a vet QB or as a rookie. If a rookie, the only way you get someone you feel can keep them competitive if JG gets hurt is to take one early.

WRT the second comment, by next year I think he meant the 2021 season. I'm worried they may be looking at going hard at 2021, which would mean pushing lots of dollars to future years. I hope that isn't the case and you are correct in your interpretation that this means that while they intend to field a competitive team this year, they are also firmly looking ahead.

    1. When you look across the qb landscape, there isn't any realistic upgrade options available.

      Delete
    2. Not an upgrade on JG. At least none that wouldn't cost way too much.

But definitely upgrades available at backup QB. Just comes down to what the 49ers are willing to pay for a backup, and which direction they want to go (vet or draft). A drafted guy also gives them a potential QBOTF.

    3. Heck, Fitzpatrick would be an upgrade - somebody I recommended pursuing last offseason.

      Delete
    4. At backup? Definitely an upgrade. Not sure how much he will cost, but his last contract was only $5.5M per annum and he's now 2 years older and entering an offseason where there will be little money to splash. If they could get him for $2M I'm all for it.

    5. Cubus, could you imagine, Shanny's face when, Fitzmagic throws that 6th Int in game? Plus, he's too old for the future.

Gotta believe it's a high draft pick. If I had to make a wager right now, I'd say they'll sign, Williams, trade down a spot taking a DE and then move back up into the bottom half of round 1 for their qb.

      Delete
    6. Yes, of course, at backup. He's not a guy for the future.

    7. @ Razor: Yes, he'll have that kind of game, but he'll also have some games where he absolutely torches the competition like he did against the 49ers. At least he has a lot of experience and as Scooter said, if we can get him fairly cheap.....

But let's see who else might become available with the salary dumps that will occur.

    8. Johnson and Rosen are under contract. Both are vets they clearly aren't comfortable going into the season as QB2.

  2. The QB the 9ers add in 2021, will depend on resigning OT TW. If they sign TW, then IMO, they draft a QB with #12 draft pick. If not, they draft an OT to replace TW and draft a QB
    Day 2 or 3.
A second 9er option could see them trade #12 to the NYJ for
draft pick #23, plus #66 and #86. The 9ers draft QB Mac jones with draft pick #23. The Jets get draft pick #86 back, in return for trading QB Sam Darnold to SF. With draft pick
#12, the Jets draft Virgina Tech CB Caleb Farley.
trading QB Sam Darnold to SF. That would give the 9ers 3 QB's for 2021, JG, Darnold and Mac Jones.
If Dee Ford retires, the 9ers will draft an EDGE rusher to
    replace him. Pitt

  3. ?? The last sentence of my post got cut off: ??
If Dee Ford retires, the 9ers will draft an EDGE rusher to
replace him. The 9ers draft Penn St. EDGE Jayson Oweh with draft pick # 66 and use him as a situational pass rusher.

    1. Only thing I can think of is if he were to realize his career was over, and he agreed to a nice injury settlement. Barring that, he'll probably end up being the highest paid coach on the staff to mentor a young pass rusher.

      Delete
    2. I actually expect the team will work out some sort of injury settlement with him.

      Delete
    3. And if not an injury settlement, then work out some sort of deal with him where they convert his injury guaranteed salary to signing bonus, then designate him a post June 1 cut.

      Delete
    4. It's unlikely that Ford will pass the physical on April 1. In that case, I thought Lombardi on the Athletic did an analysis where he came to the conclusion that it might be better to convert his guaranteed money to a signing bonus and keep him on the team at about $1M to reduce cap hit for 2021 from $20M to $11M. That frees up an extra $9M for this season.

      Delete
    5. Lombardi also had an excellent suggestion where extending Tomlinson's contract by another 2 years with a small raise would free up another $4M for 2021. Paraag will be a key player this off-season.

I agree. There are many ways to skin that cat and ford's intelligent enough to know it, as long as the money is right.

    7. Thanks Mood. I don't subscribe to the Athletic so I can't see his articles, but I know based on his tweets he has gone over scenarios of how they can reduce cap hit, including Ford. What you say there is exactly what I was thinking, though my understanding is that not all of his salary this year is injury guaranteed (I can't find the exact amount injury guaranteed anywhere). But given he had $45M in guarantees when he signed, $20M guaranteed in year 1, and his $13.6M salary was guaranteed for injury last year (before converting to bonus), I think only around $12M in guarantees remain. That is what I would convert to bonus - over 3 years remaining would push $8M in cap hit to 2022. The remaining $3M in 2021 salary that I think is unguaranteed would not need to be paid if they then designate him a post June 1 cut. His cap hit in 2021 would drop from $20M to around $9M in dead money, though it would be about $17.5M in dead cap in 2022.

But the exact numbers would depend on what amount of his 2021 salary is actually injury guaranteed.

    8. The big issue for mine in all this is that it won't take long for the cap obligations for 2022 to become very burdensome. There are only so many contracts they can push large portions of cap hits down the road on before it will cripple them to some degree in the future.

      Delete
    9. Yes, just over $11M left in guarantees IIRC.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if memory serves, two thing should help team salary caps in 2022.
      1) The new TV deal will add additional revenue
      2) NFL office and Goodell have both claimed the stadium can be filled.
While no ones knows the amount of additional revenue that should add, $11Mil. doesn't appear to be that extreme?

  6. If it isn't JG give me Mariota as a interim QB. Can be had on a cheap incentive laden contract.

  8. Just listened to a podcast where Grant and Jack list there top 6 QBs in the draft. I was surprised that Grant had Trask at #2 and Hammer had Trask at #3.

    1. Jack actually has Mac Jones at #1 if Trevor Lawrence is not included (since he is going #1 for sure).

  9. cubus,
Trask was my 2nd best QB after Lawrence a few months ago, but that changed after his miserable bowl game when he threw a number of Int's.
Trask seems to have settled in the 2nd rd range in the draft and that makes sense.

But I still believe that Trask is going to be a starter at the next level. He's a throwback type QB in that he has limited mobility, but the kid can still put the ball where it needs to go.
Hopefully, the terrible bowl game was only a glitch, but it is definitely hard to ignore.

Seems he got a little hot under the collar with Vikings coaches and players.

Golden Nuggets: SoFi Stadium, Yet Again, Fails Miserably At Keeping Us Away.....

“Don’t sell your tickets!” Rams coach Sean McVay pleaded on Monday. At this point, it sounds like his cries will prove ineffective.
According to Vivid Seats, the Rams’ efforts to avoid a repeat of 49ers fans taking over SoFi Stadium are due to fail. Current projections say that Sunday’s NFC Championship Game will see the stands 65% filled with 49ers fans, an increase from the approximately 60% that flooded the seats more than two weeks ago, according to the Los Angeles Times.

This comes in the wake of attempts to restrict ticket sales to fans living in the Los Angeles area, restrictions that were removed on Monday following a backlash on social media. That plan is not unprecedented. Teams with smaller fanbases occasionally try to keep tickets in the hands of local residents, largely to no avail due to the resale market.
