General/Open Discussion Tuesday

It was suggested by long time faithful, Undercenter that once a week we have a blank page to have an open discussion pertaining to football. We aim to please around here, so here you go!

  1. Interesting tidbit on, Micah Parsons. Played defensive end in high school prior to starting as a freshman at middle linebacker. I wonder what the 49ers would do if he were somehow still on the board at #12? At the very least I'd imagine they'd be fielding trade proposals.

    1. I think the 12th pick will be a little clearer after free agency. For the Niners I think T Williams is the key to much of the draft and free agency for that matter.

    2. If they bring back, Williams at a little north of $18 million a year I hope he takes it upon himself to take on more of a prominent leadership role in the offensive line room. Start holding people accountable to a higher standard.

I'm extremely eager to see, if as I anticipate, how much better this offensive line plays under, Foerster.

    3. Razor,
I hate to say it but I don't think that is in his personality.
That said, the whole he's not a leader narrative is overblown IMO. These are professionals, if everyone just does their job as Bill likes to say, they should be fine.

  2. I have a question for Shoup. Yesterday (?) you commented on the interior of the oline needing an upgrade. My question is, and anyone can answer, what's your evaluation of Tomlinson? Obviously center and right guard need a fix.

    1. George,

I think Tomlinson is exactly the replacement level starter you can live with... maybe even better than I stated. Though admittedly I haven't really broken down his play. He's not good in pass pro, but he isn't terrible either. The problem is that you can't line up a replacement level starter next to two backups that are starting. That said, it's an easy fix. A center and a marginal upgrade at rt guard could go a long way.

To this end, I would propose, that whatever rt guard they pick up be better at pass blocking than run blocking. In this way your Center could help him in the run game and help Tomlinson more in the pass game. This could also help McGlinchey, who could then be less worried about inside moves as he would have help there.

    2. Shoup, thanks. Always appreciate your analysis.

  3. Per 49erswebzone: Kyle Juszczyek
"He's important to us, and we're going to make every effort to try to keep him here," general manager John Lynch said in January. "I'm sure there'll be competition, and we understand that, but Kyle's a real important player to this football team, and we'll do everything we can to keep him here."

I believe that Jusz is an integral part of Shanahan' offense and that the FO should make due diligence to keep him on the field.
I see no other FA fullback that can have the same on field presence as KJ.
    1. He knows and is happy with his position.
    2. He thrives in the run game with his blocking.
    3. He's an effective receiver when called on.
    4. He has been a solid professional and total team player.

I would go as far as saying, that if I had one complaint it would be that he is underutilized in the offense. I would have liked to have seen him more involved in the passing game, which is where he excelled as a college TE.
KJ is essential to the 49ers and certainly hope that he is a top re-sign priority.

    1. He beats lb's, but I'd love to see them prepare for life after, Juice with, Touchdown Tommy Tremble in round 3.

  4. So with it looking like the cap will be in the $180M range, looks like the 49ers are currently around $13-$15M under the projected cap with a lot of key starters and role players off contract. And now one of the key anticipated avenues for clearing cap space may no longer be an option if Ford can't pass a physical.

The more I look at it the more obvious to me it becomes that JG can not be on the roster under his current deal this year. They will have to work something out with him.

    1. Scooter, what would you think about Andy Dalton in place of Jimmy? To me he seems to be a better thrower.

    2. Andy Dalton is good enough to be a starter in the NFL. I was really surprised he couldn't find a place to start last season.

My preference would definitely be to have JG rather than Dalton... but when you consider the cap implications an argument can definitely be made. I keep vacillating between whether it would be better to sign a Dalton-like vet and draft a QB at 12 or to keep JG. If it was me I would probably go the first option, but I suspect the 49ers will go option 2. However, I do think they will need to rework his contract (which to me is a bad thing - the team already has crazy cap liabilities for the 2022 season with just 19 players signed).

    3. Figure on around $10 million for the rookie class and that leaves chump change. It's going to be interesting to see how they try to get out of the mess that they have created. But hey, at least we're not the Saints.

Jaguars, Jets and Patriots are really going to be able to add some major talent in FA this year.

    4. Exactly, cubus. There are some obvious cap savings from Richburg and likely Nzocha, but Ford being a potential injury issue is a problem and really limits their options for cap savings. After those guys, Tomlinson, Ward and JG are really the main avenues left for finding space.

    5. Cutting McKinnon should save around $2 million.

      Delete
    6. Nope. His cap charge is 100% signing bonus carryover. His contract actually voids automatically at the start of the new year.

      Delete
    7. You're right. I looked at the wrong column. It's $2 million in dead money if he is cut, so can't see any reason to get rid of him.

      Delete
    8. They don't have an option there cubus. His contract voids at the start of the new year. He's a FA. Basically they added a voidable year last season to spread the cap hit out between last season and this season. Just an accounting move - he's not under contract for this season.

  5. So looking at OTC, it says that there could be over $15 million in cap savings in 2021 by cutting Dee Ford post June 1st. The dead money is listed as $4.78 million. So, this doesn't seem to jive with other numbers I've been reading. Can anyone clear this up, because if true, the situation doesn't seem so dire.

    1. That is dependent on the injury guarantee not being triggered.

  6. Jack Hammer article today on whether to draft Dalton. He thinks the way to go is to draft a lower-priced, capable vet and draft a QB like Jones, Trask, Mond, or Mills.

    https://www.si.com/nfl/49ers/news/should-the-san-francisco-49ers-trade-for-sam-darnold

"San Francisco would be much better off going with a veteran such as Andy Dalton or Ryan Fitzpatrick on a cheaper one-year deal in the range of $7 million. Both are capable of running the Shanahan offense better than what the 49ers received with Garoppolo out of the lineup in 2020.

After signing the veteran in free agency, San Francisco should turn to the draft to get their quarterback for the future. Mac Jones would be the best option in round one, but they could also find good value in Kyle Trask, Kellen Mond, or Davis Mills in Rounds 2 through 4."

  7. Mac Jones Alabama Jr. QB 13 311 402 .774
    2 Zach Wilson BYU Jr. QB 12 247 336 .735
    3 Dustin Crum Kent St. Sr. QB 4 83 113 .735
    4 Adrian Martinez Nebraska Jr. QB 7 108 151 .715
    5 Matt Corral Ole Miss So. QB 10 231 326 .709
    6 Justin Fields Ohio St. Jr. QB 8 158 225 .702
    7 Carson Strong Nevada So. QB 9 249 355 .701
    8 Gunnar Watson Troy So. QB 9 211 301 .701
    9 Trevor Lawrence Clemson Jr. QB 10 231 334 .692
10 Will Rogers Mississippi St. Fr. QB
These are the college QB completion percentage numbers for 2020.

If we can't make a deal for any of the top 4 QBs, I'd turn my attention to Mac Jones. His numbers speak for themselves.
Some pundits have somewhat dampened MJ by saying he had the best receivers in college, but my contention is that someone had to get them the ball efficiently and consistently. That person was Mac Jones.

    1. No debate from me. I rate Jones much higher than most. Would be very happy using pick 12 on him and would happily take him over Fields and Lance.

    2. Mac Jones had the best weapons to throw to, a great running game and the best protection in the country. He still has to go out there and play which he did very well. He actually outplayed Tua if you compare the two. While I would not use #12 on him as there are enough questions at least for me about his ceiling at the NFL level, I'd be ok with him in the second if he fell that far. Likely won't but that is as high as I would take him.

I don't think that's fair. The reason they are in trouble is because the cap is going down. The other moves they made were based on the cap increasing as it had for the past ten years. No one could have predicted this happening which is why so many teams have cap issues.

The Jets and Jags will be able to add some players, but the Pats have a few players coming back that opted out last year that will take a chunk of that cap room so I'm not sure they'll be big players in FA. Whatever the case there are very few teams with surplus cap room so a number of FA's are going to be signed to below market deals for one year most likely.
