Reading more into some sleep science, I am not convinced the 49ers are making the correct choice vs the Rams with the Australia trip. At least based on the National Library of Medicine, arriving within 24 hours, the Rams will avoid having to adjust to the new time zone as that adjustment peaks around 48-72 hours. The 49ers will have adjusted to local time as they will be 7 days early. However, the game is 10:35AM local. Peak physical body performance is late afternoon. The 49ers will be playing at a 10:35AM physical body clock, while the rams will be playing at a 5:35PM body clock. Plus, they won’t be jet lagged on return never having adjusted.
Science Direct provides the counter argument and backs the 49ers strategy. Maybe acclimating to the climate is more important than trying to avoid the jet lag - same reason they practiced in Colorado before the Mexico City game. Australia has opposite seasons as us, so it could be smart. I like the extra time for team bonding. I guess we'll find out soon enough which is the better approach.

I think this Australia trip will have a negative effect on the 49ers and the Rams. It will effect them negatively both on the week of the game and the following week. If they are going to play in Australia both teams should have their bye week after the game.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great opportunity to beat the krap out of the lowly Rams. The loser will have a long trip home.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding!π±
DeleteOne missed tackle, fumble or important dropped pass can throw the entire time theory into a mess. It comes down to just playing the game without game altering mistakes.
ReplyDeleteIt'll be very interesting to see which staff handled it better.
DeleteThat, I agree with.
ReplyDeleteBut, it's the 1st game of the season every player is excited and energized and ready hit the opponent and put on a show for Australia. The players on the field will likely forget where they are at 5 minutes into the game.
Comments above mine.
ReplyDeletewhere they are *playing* 5 minutes into the game...
ReplyDeleteTrue but once they burn through that initial adrenaline rush it'll be the most prepared and conditioned team in the 4th quarter that'll likely emerge victorious.
ReplyDeletePros and cons for the 2026 NFL season opener in Melbourne, Australia, between the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers.
ReplyDelete* Top Experts in Circadian & Sleep Science for AthleticsDr. Charles Czeisler (Harvard Medical School): Pioneer in circadian biology and human sleep phase-shifting.Dr. Shona Halson (Australian Catholic University): Elite recovery and sleep scientist who consults extensively with professional sports teams on transmeridian travel.Dr. Roger S. Smith (Sleep Medicine / Circadian Performance Analyst): Noted researcher on circadian timing advantages in athletic performance.Opposing Thesis Arguments: Body Clock & REM CyclesThe Acute-Adrenaline / Minimal-Exposure Thesis!
* LA Rams Core Argument: Trying to adjust biological clocks for a short stay induces a confusing, partial phase-delay/advance state. By staying on West Coast time and arriving 24 hours before the game, internal circadian markers remain stable. REM/Sleep Mechanics: Players experience minimal sleep fragmentation prior to departure, bank sleep at home, and use acute pre-game adrenaline to mask homeostatic sleep pressure during the contest, (flying back immediately).
* The Proactive Acclimatization Thesis: SF 9ers Core Argument: A 17-hour time shift causes severe disruption to core body temperature nadirs, cortisol rhythms, and REM/slow-wave sleep architecture if unaddressed. Arriving a week early allows natural entrainment to local solar cues and light-dark cycles.REM/Sleep Mechanics: Early arrival normalizes REM sleep rebound (crucial for procedural memory and motor learning) and realigns melatonin secretion profiles before physical exertion peaks Impact on QB Cognitive Processing Speed.
* The Rams Strategy Risk: Playing at a local time that maps to the middle of the night on a player's internal West Coast clock can suppress prefrontal cortex activation. For a QB, this manifests as delayed micro-decisions in reading Cover-2/Cover-3 rotations, fraction-of-a-second delays in visual search times, and slower trigger execution under disguised blitzes. * The 49ers Strategy Benefit: Full entrainment protects cognitive processing speed and working memory. The QB's reaction time to high-velocity defensive reads remains calibrated to peak circadian alertness windows.
* Impact on Fourth-Quarter Injury Rates: The Rams Strategy Risk: Acute sleep debt combined with extreme transmeridian fatigue drastically degrades neuromuscular control and soft-tissue recovery capacity by the fourth quarter. Proprioceptive deficits increase the likelihood of non-contact lower-limb injuries (hamstring strains, ACL tears) as fast-twitch muscle fiber recruitment stochastically misfires under fatigue. * The 49ers Strategy Benefit: By normalizing slow-wave sleep (where human growth hormone is secreted and muscular repair peaks) over a week-long block, cellular repair and systemic inflammation markers stabilize, lowering late-game fatigue-induced injury risks.game-time local kickoff adjustments. NOTE: There is also a bright light therapy protocol that might further tilt the competitive advantage for either team, but I didn't include it.
Explaining why the Rams body clock, at10:35 AM Melbourne time, will be ~4:35 AM, on LA time, the previous day:
ReplyDelete(There are 17 time zone changes from LA to Melbourne).
* Circadian Rhythm: Your body runs on a natural 24-hour cycle tied to
light and sleep. The Math: Crossing 17 time zones means a 17-hour
shift.
* The Rams will arrive in Melbourne one day before the game:
* 17 time zone changes, minus one, (for the Rams arrival time)
equals 17 - 1 hour. (3:45 AM minus 16 hours = approximately
4:35 AM (LA time), for the Rams body clock when the game
begins!
Is Bosa's "general soreness" even though he hasn't practiced yet just an excuse for a hold in to get a contract extension?
ReplyDeleteπHe's locked up through '28!
DeleteAlthough the reigning Defensive Player of the Year missed four practices due to lower body soreness... (Myles Garrett)
DeleteRazor,
DeleteAccording to Google he has very little guaranteed money left on his contract
They just restructured his contract which leaves the Niners with a $55M cap hit next year. They'll likely revisit at some point to gain more cap relief, but I don't ever see him playing for another team.
DeleteI suspect Bosa will go in the HOF when all said and done. I expect he'll have a great year.
ReplyDeleteHe is going to need at least 3 more pro bowl/all pro seasons to get there. Right now he sits in the Justin Smith category. All most but not quite.
DeleteHe's only 28 and when healthy he's been dominant!
DeleteOne more knee injury could seriously stymie his trajectory toward that goal. At this point, I just want to see Bosa stay healthy and let the HOF take care of itself, if and when the time comes.
DeleteI'd like to see Bosa not get double and triple teamed and I'd like him to wear pads on those hips that chippers target.
DeleteAgree.
DeleteWill Pauling is a player I thought had a chance to make the team and Hankerson called him the Hammer and the most physical WR in the blocking game.
ReplyDeleteIdk. Maybe The Wasp would be a better name? The kid is tiny.
DeleteYards per route run vs two high, 2024-25 (min. 400 routes total):

2. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, 2.60
3. Jayden Reed, 2.56
4. Ja’Marr Chase, 2.49
5. Mike Evans, 2.48
6. Nico Collins, 2.45
7. Alec Pierce, 2.29

I guess Morris named a new LB position - feverback
ReplyDeleteIs that Duggar's role?
DeleteNot sure, he considers Upton Stout as the star on defense.
DeleteI remember the Raiders Ted Hendricks playing what used to be called the elephant position now called Jack or Leo DE/LB hybrid. Makes me wonder if Duggar could play something similar to that. Hendricks was 6'7" 220 lbs. Duggar is 6'5" 240 lbs. It's going to be interesting to see how Morris uses him.
ReplyDeleteThis is a rough one.
ReplyDeleteOn paper these rosters are not close.
QB - Rams
RB - SF
WR - Rams
OL - Rams
DL - Rams
Db's - Rams
LB's - SF
We really have to hope LA has some Rust and combined with jet lag they play sloppy, and turn the ball over a few times. At least for this early game.
The later game against them SF should have a better gage of their younger players and might hold their own depending on injuries on either side.
Players I am most looking forward to seeing play this Thursday.

Nick Martin
The 49ers signed center Doug Kramer Jr. and released Nick Zakelj.
ReplyDeleteWith the release of Zakelj Purdy is now the only one left from that draft class.
DeleteCarver Willis is back from concussion protocol and getting his first look at LG with 2s. Robert Jones still at LG with 1s. Connor Colby at RG with 2s. Now is the time to make the move Carver!
