ReplyDeleteMy only surprise is Cruz. I thought that his best chance was to be stashed away on PS. Halton and Thompson have had good TC's, and Halton could be breathing down Collins' and West' neck sooner than later. At any rate, the young players are making their presence known.
Guerendo can still be a factor if he makes a good injury recovery.
All and all, nice looking roster.
I think the plan with Cruz is to give him as many meaningful reps throughout 2 seasons as possible in the hope he develops into their LT.
DeleteOther than Puni I am out to lunch on guards. I think Worth makes this team not sure about Martin or Gifford. Your list looks good. It's a real good team - on paper that is.

DeleteWillis has the biggest upside if the competitions close due to his elite run blocking. All he needs is NFL S&C to strengthen his base in pass pro.
No issues with Pauling, but the guards after Puni are a concern. Still, with so much firepower on offense, I think they can overcome a poor to average LG. I’d start the LG who’s the best at pass blocking—it’s more important to protect Purdy than to count on him for run assignments.

DeleteI ask because I'm seeing more and more people say this is the case, but I believe it was because they couldn't run the ball last year. Likely tied to not having a proven X WR that defenses had to account for.
DeleteI think he wants to run the ball more than anything. We all know the helplessness that is tied to a defense who can't stop the run. KS has an abundance of weapons at his disposal hard to say what he is going to do. I have lots of belief in this team, if healthy this team is going to be great.
DeleteEvery 49ers QB over the years has been successful when the running game has been a force. Purdy will be a happy camper with a good running game leading the march.

Brian Ayrault and his camp (WME Sports) are telling teams that they want 1 year 20 million with 17 fully guaranteed, contract incentives up to 25 million.
No team is going to pay Joey $13M let alone $20M. Sounds like he is retired for good to me.

ReplyDeleteIf the 49ers beat them and they (Rams) still go on to win the Superbowl, losing to the 49ers will be hugely insignificant. But, if the 49ers can swing a deal and sign Vea, the Rams (presumed) road to the SB might become very bumpy.

DeleteFirst games of the season have generally been glorified preseason games. Imho, it will take 4-5 games into the season for teams to lock-in for the rest of the season. Seattle didn't find their groove until nearly half way into last season.

ReplyDeleteI don't see the game in Australia as an important test for either team. In that it is the first game of the season and NFL teams are no longer game ready in the first week. Travel time, time zone difference and neither team knowing what the best time for them to arrive makes me think this first game might just be a shit show for both teams
